Governor Palin Interview with the National Review

Robert Costa and Rich Lowry of the National Review interviewed Governor Palin today. Here are a few excerpts:

Former Alaska governor and Going Rogue author Sarah Palin talked to NRO this afternoon in a wide-ranging and frank interview.

She thinks President Obama’s bow to the emperor of Japan reflects an attitude that America should be “subservient to other countries”; characterizes Newt Gingrich’s thinking on NY-23 as reflective of a “political machine”; thinks that South Carolina voters should consider sending Sen. Lindsey Graham a message by supporting a conservative primary challenger; calls the media’s treatment of Carrie Prejean “unfair”; and says she would give John McCain “the benefit of the doubt” in their dispute over whether she was charged with fees for her vetting. And oh, yeah — her anonymous critics don’t have “guts,” and she’s not a David Brooks fan.

[...]

She suggests, meanwhile, that there might be encouraging news coming Marco Rubio’s way. She says she’s had a chance to look at the Crist-Rubio race “just on the surface.” But she adds, “I’m just being asked about it really in the last week or two, so I’ll dig more into it. I’ll find out what the guys are holding in terms of positions and see where maybe I can help.”

[...]

She’s not a fan of the anonymity that her critics from within the McCain campaign almost always hide behind. What does she think of that anonymity? “I don’t think much of it,” says Palin. “It’s kind of like the criticism from anonymous bloggers, which I totally ignore. If they don’t have the guts to put their name on it, then it’s not worth much to me.”

[...]

It wouldn’t be a Palin interview without asking about “death panels.” How did she come up with the phrase? “To me, while reading that section of the bill, it became so evident that there would be a panel of bureaucrats who would decide on levels of health care, decide on those who are worthy or not worthy of receiving some government-controlled coverage,” she explains. “Since health care would have to be rationed if it were promised to everyone, it would therefore lead to harm for many individuals not able to receive the government care. That leads, of course, to death.”

Read the whole thing here. Costa and Lowry ask some good questions which elicit interesting responses from Governor Palin. It's a good read.

I hope she backs Rubio and not Crist--who came out recently backtracking his backtrack saying he would have fully voted for the stimulus if he was in the Senate.

panchita, November 17, 2009 10:17 PM

relax Andrew. no way on this good green earth that Sarah would ever back the tanned rino.

Plus, obama put his paws all over crist, which is a kiss of death in politics today. whatever obama touches just withers and dies.

AmeriCuda, November 17, 2009 10:18 PM

Crist bashed her yesterday, saying she needed to stop whining, -which means he sees the writing on the wall. Rubio endorsement by Christmas.

Zephyr, November 17, 2009 10:22 PM

I agree with you totally Andrew. Apparently she is weighing it before making a decision. Sadly you may not get a lot of response tonight. Everyone is reading the BOOK that I haven't received yet. So, I am just serving snacks and drinks and fluffing pillows. And no I am not crazy, I just want my copy of THE BOOK.

Bill in Baltimore, November 17, 2009 10:23 PM

What about the chocolate chip cookies I asked about ? and milk. 1% please.

Lakerfanalways, November 17, 2009 10:27 PM

Youc an tell by the interview that she will be endorsing Rubio otherwise why would he say "There is some good news coming Rubio's way" she will endorse Rubio, Crist is a JERK..Also, kinda OT, but has anyone here seeing Nightline, what did Sarah say

yogi41, November 17, 2009 10:27 PM

I'm surprised that she's vocal about someone challenging Graham. He's McCain's #1 guy, so that is somewhat curious.

jimr3, November 17, 2009 10:27 PM

Yea well Crist needs to stop LYING ABOUT SUPPORTING THE STIMULUS!!

Zephyr, November 17, 2009 10:27 PM

I CAN JUST DO SO MUCH! WAIT A MINUTE!

CTSherman, November 17, 2009 10:29 PM

I am half way through the book and after reading this entire article there is no way she is not preparing for a run. She is waiting to be CALLED by her fellow Americans. I'll be calling.

Bill in Baltimore, November 17, 2009 10:29 PM

Ok, but in the meantime, I'm having a Reese's Cup.

Bill in Baltimore, November 17, 2009 10:30 PM

She wants to know the Big Guy is ok with it too.

JeanA, November 17, 2009 10:30 PM

Anybody watch Hannity? They were talking about how during the Barbara WaWa interview the camera man kept zooming in on Gov. Palin to where her face covered the whole screen. That is an old trick. People tend to mistrust people that are super size on the screen. No super sizing WaWa.

I don't have my book either yet! :( It's being delivered tomorrow. BAH.

OldDude, November 17, 2009 10:32 PM

Nice article but when you start with good ingredients....

Zephyr, November 17, 2009 10:32 PM

Well go ahead defendAmerica wants her pillow fluffed. Don't say anything but she didn't even say please.

jimr3, November 17, 2009 10:33 PM

There is a lot of good stuff in this interview. I like the warning shot she fired across Lindsey Graham's bow: “His constituents may want to send him a message to say ‘shore it up’ and come back to some more commonsense, conservative ideals.”

RINO-Hunter, November 17, 2009 10:35 PM

A commenter at AoS a few days ago said Crist looks like "a golem made of beef jerky".

MarkRNY, November 17, 2009 10:36 PM

Way ta go CT. Me too.

KeeleyH, November 17, 2009 10:38 PM

Crist bashed Sarah? Someone needs to send this piece of info to her. In the meantime, Rubio said he can't think of anything he and Sarah don't agree on.

panchita, November 17, 2009 10:39 PM

i'm completely disgusted with graham have called his office several times. illegal immigration, sotomayor, cap and trade lindsey has lost touch with his constituents.

lindsey must not have been kind to her behind the scenes. just guessing, but i suspect others are yet to be harpooned.

Bill in Baltimore, November 17, 2009 10:39 PM

blowin' up in their face

John McCain, November 17, 2009 10:40 PM

My friends, would you please tell Sarah to stop threatening my wife Lindsey? It's un-mavericky.

karenfromny, November 17, 2009 10:40 PM

I loved how she said she likes Lindsey, but his constituents may want to send him a message...

CTSherman, November 17, 2009 10:40 PM

She is proving herself by calling out the squish. I think she did it rather well and just told him to get a spine, act like a Republican and she won't have a need to back anyone else in SC.

MarkRNY, November 17, 2009 10:41 PM

Crist is a twitchie flake. Something not right there.

Bet the ranch that she'll back Rubio. Bet your neighbors ranch too. She'll do it at exactly the right time for him, not her.

Just saw Marsha Blackburn on Greta. Greta wants to make the Newsweek photo and all the rest of the media assault on Sarah a "Stop picking on the girl" thing. She refuses to accept that it's a "Get the Republican who can hurt us the most" thing. Disappointing.

Marsha was great!

karenfromny, November 17, 2009 10:41 PM

I am taping GMA wednesday morning, they said part of the BW interview will be on it. It is not our C4P calendar, but i think we will see more of the interview..

panchita, November 17, 2009 10:42 PM

Sarah looked horrid in that interview. She needs to learn how to control her image a bit better in terms of lighting and camera angles. I suspect as her staff grows someone will assigned to that task.

wisetrog, November 17, 2009 10:42 PM

Why do they provide the straight interview and instead post this cut and paste job?

WSJ hints Sarah rejected Kirk. That'd be awesome if true.

Crist's leftward lurch again shows he realizes he may not get her endorsement, so no need to woo the right. I am so excited.

Andrew, November 17, 2009 10:46 PM

Supposedly, the entire interview will be on Friday's 20/20. They're just milking it for as much ratings as they can.

Beehive, November 17, 2009 10:46 PM

Wallace is on Maddow. Is there anyone here who would be brave enough to go over there and watch and then come back and give us a report?

GAHanson, November 17, 2009 10:47 PM

Someone on another threaded theorized that 0bama's appearance on FOX has something to do with all the interviews Gov. Palin is getting, I believe that. I also believe he picked this particular week to get out of the country because he couldn't stand all the attention she is getting. Remember, on 9-12 he flew out of DC.

I'm impatiently waiting for my copy to arrive, probably next week, I may not be able to wait that long. Brooks doesn't like her, because her legs don't have creases for him to stare at.

Ceejay, November 17, 2009 10:48 PM

Crist is a RINO, and though I hate to see the state go Dem for a Guv, he is lying now that he did not support the stimulus bill , when he met with Obama. Come on Charlie come clean!

Sarah 2012!

Zephyr, November 17, 2009 10:49 PM

I ain't goin' there.

TSM Admin, November 17, 2009 10:50 PM

I have not had time to comment today, spent time workign and then watching/listening to all Sarah's interviews today. Here's a few things I can add, maybe somem have already said,

1. The Barbara Walters interview will be repeated in its' ENTIRETY on 20/20 Friday night. That's what Barbara said on 2nd half hour of GMA today.

2. BOR tonight said he had interviewd Sarah this afternoon. Mentioned in segment with Colmes and Crowley. He pointed out to Colmes that this would be a substantive interview, similar to his with Obama last Fall, and there was real policy stuff included.

3. I called B&N in Orlando, where book signing will be evening of 11/24. I asked if pictures allowed. They said no, BUT they will have professional photog and pictures will be on Flicker for FREE download. Don't know if this is just a B&N thing or not. (I would guess you can still have camera out in area where lines are, etc.)

4. I got email from Sarah today (SarahPAC). One of things mentioned is for $100 or more donation, you will also get SIGNED book! Don't know if you need to follow the specific link for that or not.

defendAmerica, November 17, 2009 10:50 PM

I invited you over... isn't that enough!!

Ceejay, November 17, 2009 10:50 PM

Waiting on the book too...went to Walmart, they had it, but it was on top shelf, wink , wink, had to do a little rearranging...wink, wink

Sarah 2012!

Oh, I expect Palin to pivot and take Obama on herself and in a much more substantive way. She is going to assume the role of "leader of the Opposition", and do it HER way. Take that to the bank.

This is the ramp-up for 2010. As she becomes the only candidate with a "pair" big enough to challenge Obama directly, the dollars to SarahPAC will swell and the invites to CongressCritters will swell as well.

wisetrog, November 17, 2009 10:56 PM

defendAmerica, November 17, 2009 10:59 PM

i didnt think she looked horrid. she just wasnt looking like a pinup model and i think that will be good for her. sometimes you gotta control the "sexy factor" in order to help liberals focus on your words and not just your legs.

james23, November 17, 2009 11:02 PM

My lord, what a roll out today for Sarah! She hit several out of the park. GMA, Rush and the Lowery interview; all excellent! the agit-prop media will go nuts about the profiling comment, but try to find an American outside Hollywood who disagrees.

Mountain Mama, November 17, 2009 11:03 PM

I've never been more disappointed with Brooks than I was this past week, with his NASTY comments about Sarah. He is WRONG about her; by rejecting her, all he is proving is he's a sad little man.

Bill in Baltimore, November 17, 2009 11:04 PM

OMG.

I just read the first 6 pages of the book and I am stoked !

Nothing new, but the way she weaved her story tells you EXACTLY what she is about !

"I had certainly gotten off on the wrong foot with the Republican Party" (in Alaska)

RTL, Oil, Corruption, Piper, etc.

This is gonna be good

TSM Admin, November 17, 2009 11:07 PM

Patty: Wait a week and decide again. I like what I have seen/heard so far. I think much better then post election interviews last year. Consider also editing, depends on your experience on looking and spotting it. For instance, all the BW interviews today were heavily edited!

defendAmerica, November 17, 2009 11:07 PM

I thought she had supurb answers. Did you hear her on Rush?!! Barbara and Oprah expectedly asked her about the gossip. But Rush, O'Reilly is gonna be all policy.

I thought she knocked Rush out of the park.

KeeleyH, November 17, 2009 11:10 PM

You'll have to be more specific. Which answers she gave you're not happy with? Channel flipper? What are you talking about?

FLREPUB, November 17, 2009 11:14 PM

Anyone know when the ratings for Oprah will come out?

KentonAK, November 17, 2009 11:14 PM

Wow Patty!-
I didn't realize we'd leaped-frogged all the way to 2012. And I also missed the news that Sarah had anounced her candicacy. Silly ole me...But I think Sarah's doing just fine.
(But I'm just a silly Wasilla hillbilly..What do I know.)

gardunne63, November 17, 2009 11:15 PM

After reading the book, IMO, Joe Lieberman comes off in the most positive light of those who were surrounding McCain on a daily basis. Sarah and Joe seemed to bond because of her/his deep religious beliefs.

Mountain Mama, November 17, 2009 11:15 PM

Very revealing word usage there, PH:
"She should be analyzing all issues from several prospectives...."

See, Gov. Palin doesn't analyze from PRO-spectives----you know, watching the polls, pandering to whatever whim the crowd craves at a given moment in time.

No, Gov. Palin is GROUNDED in TIMELESS conservative values and beliefs, so she analyzes from PERSPECTIVE.

She has VISION! She can see what will work best in the future, because she has a wide range of experience gained in the past.

And you ARE being unfair, perhaps inadvertently (I don't know if you're a long-term troll here, or just a newly-interested potential follower).

Gov. Palin is very capable in interviews, answering questions quickly, succinctly, and with fresh ideas. She doesn't NEED a year to meander around, searching for $50 words, while avoiding the questions: "D'oh... .uh....uh..."

And she has COURAGE, which many politicians never display----such as BO, who can't make up his mind whether or not to HONOR the general he placed in power, by sending the troops the general requested!

johnmd, November 17, 2009 11:17 PM

The entire walters interview will be shown friday at 10p eastern

manajordan, November 17, 2009 11:19 PM

This is another great interview. I definitely suggest reading the whole thing from the NRO site if you haven't. She is standing up for true Conservative and American values.

I enjoyed all her answers. This was the first time I've seen her asked specifically about Meghan McCain. She gave a good and gracious answer, per her usual.

Beehive, November 17, 2009 11:23 PM

Nancy

The Guv is coming to Colorado Springs for a book signing.
Is that close?

Sarah Palin will make a December stop in Colorado Springs as part of a book-signing tour in support of her newly released memoir “Going Rogue,” according to a local bookseller.
Border’s bookstore in the Chapel Hills Mall said it plans to issue about 1,000 wristbands in advance of the book signing, scheduled for 7 p.m. Dec. 8. Wristband holders will be guaranteed a spot in line and at least one copy of the book, the store said.
“We would probably have more of a turnout than she could handle without that kind of thing,” said Brian Cole, the store’s general manager.
Cole could not immediately say when or how the wristbands will be handed out.
The stop in Colorado Springs is not listed on a book-signing schedule posted at Palin’s publisher, HarperCollins. Cole said the appearance was confirmed this morning, on the day that Palin’s anticipated memoir hit the stores

So far, it is exactly what I thought it would be.

johnmd, November 17, 2009 11:53 PM

From the Rush and nro interviews and some of the comments on bw Sarah is beginning to grasp what her power really is. I think she wasn't really sure until today when the reality of the book sales hit, the million on face book and the 24/7 media blitz happened. Crist probally has a sick feeling about now and Linsey is probally looking over his shoulder anticipating the incomming shoe. Can we begin to put a list together of her known advisors? She said she was checking into (vetting is more like it) the request for support from other canidates, this has to be by staff. And i suspect that is part of the request from Sarahpac. to expand her team, and probally the reason for the expansion in Wasilla.Todd did say in an interview that Wasilla was going to be home base.

onexsturtle, November 17, 2009 11:55 PM

Crist said that? That means he is gonna lose sooo much of the base.

narciso, November 18, 2009 12:09 AM

You know Lowry probably got all sorts of grief for his 'she projects' comments, and then later, was a conduit for the Schmallace rumors, but he still hasn't learned his lesson, we don't need his commentary, just her words

Recovering Democrat, November 18, 2009 12:19 AM

I saw most of it. Sarah rocked. I got a little motion sick with the adolescents operating the cameras for ABC, but whether her head is covering my entire TV screen, what's coming out of Palin's mouth is truth in a bottle.

Recovering Democrat, November 18, 2009 12:22 AM

Well, it was nice to see that the View ladies stood up for Palin. Hey, even Sarah said it was sexist of Newsweek, didn't she? I'm against the victim thing but my goodness ... if THAT's not sexism, I don't know what you would consider sexism. It was a cheap shot to demean and degrade her and portray her as intellectually inferior. It played on the worst stereotypes of women, and particularly Palin, that she's not serious, even though she's STILL got more executive experience than the Ego In Chief.

Recovering Democrat, November 18, 2009 12:28 AM

Why won't David Brooks just come clean and admit that a girl like Sarah dumped him in high school and he feels insecure around confident gals?

Recovering Democrat, November 18, 2009 12:43 AM

Ok, Patty ... I'll give you some honesty. I think Sarah does need to be able to go a bit deeper on the issues, to win over skeptics, and I believe that she will do that. When she says, "cut taxes" and "cut spending" some people might want to ask: which taxes would you cut? How would you reduce spending.

I don't think she's really been digging into foreign policy issues yet, but I believe she will cover more angles in her responses over time. She's not running for anything right now. She's still defining herself and rehabbing her image from last year.

Let's remember that Obama had two years of running for president to refine his message, and still he was always vague in his worldview. Furthermore, the press never really presses him by asking tough follow-ups.

I thought Barbara asking Sarah about Israeli settlements was just funny. I mean, who the heck sits around their living room talking about Israeli settlements?

However, Sarah's answer was very clear. Yes on settlements. But she did not offer a broader rationale for why she believed that. If she were really running for president, I would expect her to have full command of the diplomatic aspects of that question.

The most important thing right now is that her instincts and her worldview are correct. She needs to bring the same amount of depth she's delivered in some of her Facebook posts to her interviews. We know that she's a voracious reader. We've seen her state-of-the-state addresses and gubernatorial debates in Alaska where she very much sounded like a policy wonk for the issues affecting Alaskans. If she runs in 2012, she will approach national issues in the same laser-like manner. I have no doubt.

AmeriCuda, November 18, 2009 12:44 AM

A good article by Andrea Tantaros. I agree with her, for the most part.

http://www.andreatantaros.com/1/2009/11/Palin-Book-Tour-Should-Be-Her-Primary.cfm

Recovering Democrat, November 18, 2009 12:51 AM

That is a very interesting point. She has also always been a very strong supporter of Israel. I seem to recall that many in McCain's staff were not very religious. I think it will be VERY interesting, if Sarah runs, the type of people she surrounds herself with. I would BET that she handpicks people who are optimistic, and share her values, and convictions.

AmeriCuda, November 18, 2009 12:55 AM

techno, November 18, 2009 1:11 AM

Patty, in football terms this is only the first game of the season. You can't win or lose the SB here unless your QB gets injured for the season (a la Tom Brady), which Palin obviously wanted to avoid. Palin did fine. She is now 1-0.

By the way I think Palin had an excellent training camp.

techno, November 18, 2009 1:14 AM

This is what I said on another thread. Sarah looked less beautiful and older but more earnest and presidential in the Barbara Walters interview. I am talking strictly in a political sense here.

IMHO, Sarah needs to project a more sober, elegant posture and less of the happy-go-lucky pose that she is known for.

Barbara Walters was excellent is showing Palin's serious side.

Nancy, November 18, 2009 1:24 AM

Beehive,
A friend told me this tonight! My husband laughed and said: You don't know something about Sarah Palin! Whoa!:)
Colorado Springs is only 45 minutes away, so I will definately try to get one of those wristbands!:)
Thanks for thinking of me, Beehive!:)

riley4palin, November 18, 2009 9:04 AM

Great interview with NRO. The Governor is very confident and you can tell in her responses. She is saying everything that common sense Americans think and the other Republicans are afraid to say.

If I didn't know any better, I think she might even be swaying Rich Lowry to her side.

Kathryn Jean Lopez is a whole different story. That won't happen until Mittens comes to his senses and drops out and endorses the Governor.

Puma.for.Life, November 18, 2009 12:20 PM

You guys are so critical. I thought the Walters interview was superior to the Oprah interview. I thought Baba Wawa was fair and gracious and that the Governor looked great. This NRO interview is really really good...they covered some new ground. I mean, I come to this site and I can't believe how many interviews the Gov has given in 24 hours...she's an energizer bunny!! I can't get off the site and off to life there is so much to read; hope we get more videos especially since I do not have tv....

Puma.for.Life, November 18, 2009 12:25 PM

I assumed the request from Sarahpac will be to cover her expenses to support candidates.

Puma.for.Life, November 18, 2009 12:28 PM

Actually, I disagree with her on how she has to go to the MSM at some point; yeah, at her convenience and when they are on their knees begging (except for Fox, of course). I think her "Walmart" strategy is the winning game in town; it worked for Walmart...they really didn't have to go to big cities to be successful.
