IBD: Governor Palin Right, Joe Biden Wrong
From an editorial in Investors Business Daily:
As Palin jousts with Biden on energy independence, the government reports that we lead the world in energy reserves. From oil to gas to coal, we are sitting on prosperity. So why are we importing anything?
One of the interesting sidelights of the NY-23 race was an exchange on energy independence between Vice President Joe Biden and the former governor of energy-rich Alaska, Sarah Palin. Biden, who came in to campaign for Democrat Bill Owens, was reminded of the issue of energy.
"The fact of the matter is that Sarah Palin thinks the answer to energy was 'Drill, baby, drill,'" Biden said at an Owens fundraiser, referring to Palin's own campaign slogan last year. "No, it's a lot more complicated, Sarah, than 'Drill, baby, drill.'"
Actually, it's not, according to a new report produced by the Congressional Research Service, hardly an outpost of the vast right-wing conspiracy or on the payroll of Big Oil. The report says that if all our energy resources are added up and converted to a barrels of oil equivalent (BOE), the U.S. has the largest reserves in the world.
According to the CRS, the U.S. has 1,321 billion barrels of oil (or barrels of oil equivalent for other sources of energy) if you combine its recoverable natural gas, oil and coal reserves. Russia is close behind with 1,248 billion barrels BOE. Other energy-producing nations, including many that export oil to the U.S., lag behind.
[...]
Memo to Veep: We are dependent on fossil fuel energy and will be for some time. The folks at Peabody Energy say replacing coal would require 2,400 times more solar generation, 40 times more wind power, 250 new nuclear plants, almost double the U.S. production of natural gas, 500 hydro plants the size of the Hoover Dam or halving electricity consumption.
"Our overwhelming coal, natural gas and oil resources represent tens of trillions of dollars in wealth and millions of American jobs," said Sen. James Inhofe, R.-Okla., who released the CRS data.

Maybe if we could tell 'em it's okay to be great?
Governor Palin is so thorough in her research that her statements continue to be proven right. A leader that we can trust and believe in. Yes. We can.
Between "Cap & Tax" and the proposals that will come out of Copenhagen next month, the USA will NOT have any economic recovery. Too many Americans do not realize that any Treaty signed by the USA supercedes US law per the Constitution.
I try to remain optimistic, but if both Health Care Reform and Cap & Tax become law, this country will soon slide into third world status.
IBD seems to be very supportive of the Gov.
Especially after Biden tried to take on Palin regarding energy, I've become increasingly sympathetic towards Joe Biden's mom. It had to have been extremely painful to give birth to an infant who already had his foot in his mouth.
What further infuriates me about this exchange is the condescending tone that Biden had when he said "It's a little more complicated than that." You know, just to reinforce the MSM narrative that Sarah is dumb. Like we don't all know what a great intellect resides between Biden's ears. Please.
If we still had reporters and not cheerleaders the obvious question for Joe would have been, how is it more complicated than that? Explain your position to me. Liberals don't have to answer for anything. They are never intellectuallly challenged. They're just free to spout their moronic statements and move on. Infuriating beyond all belief.
Doug - great post! Key facts and figures in a nutshell, excellent.
I knew we were energy-rich within our borders, but I didn't know that our oil, gas and coal combined accounted for the world's largest energy reserves on a BOE basis, and my daily work now focuses on the energy industry. Goes to show the extent of the general ignorance on the topic. But of course we have here what we need; this nation has been blessed from its beginning. If only we would return to policies based on that reality.
Drill, baby, drill. Mine, baby, mine. Produce, baby, produce!
"American energy resources, brought to you with American ingenuity, and produced by American workers!"
- Gov. Sarah Palin
Palin ASAP!
'specially since his head was up his...
They always have been supportive.
Anybody who thinks it's complicated wpuld have trouble with velcro shoes.
Oh yeah, we've got it, we just started outsourcing oil before outsourcing was a word. Then the environazi's kicked in, and 40 years later, voila!
OT---It looks like Huck step in it. He could use a little C4P treatment. hint video.
Unlike Palin, who endorsed on Facebook the losing Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman in New York's 23rd district, Huckabee stayed on the sidelines without even a single tweet. He was troubled by Republican nominee Dede Scozzafava's liberal views on social issues (pro-abortion rights and gay marriage), but he was not willing to join Hoffman's third party uprising that drove Scozzafava from the race. "I feel sorry for people like Newt Gingrich, who was just excoriated over his support for Dede," Huckabee said, casting his lot with the practical politicians. As for Palin, whose neon-lit celebrity appears to irk Huckabee, he sniffed, "She apparently did not have a big impact on the ultimate outcome." (my highlite).

Chamber suspends ticket sales. TOO MUCH DEMAND.

I've often wondered whether some of our national policies in the past 40 or so years have been deliberately treasonous, intended to destroy this great republic, or just criminally stupid.
Either way, the perpetrators must be indentified, confronted and removed from power. They belong to both major political parties, albeit they tend to differ as to stupid policy of preference.
Huck is a fool, and if he doesn't think that quote will be wrapped around his neck like a tourniquet when he decides to run, he's a bigger fool. Yes, the 1969 oil spill off the California coast, that made Esso change it's name to Exxon, that empowered the modern day environmental movement, and OPEC was the turning point
There's this Luddite, NIMBY tendency among too many American liberals that the Political Class taps into for campaign contributions in states like California and New York. You were wondering why nuclear plants don't get built and oil remains unexploited here and we send cash to Saudi? That's why. It will change, but only when voters become intolerant of the environmentalist Left.
Yeah, right, Huck. The "ultimate outcome" was that a no-name non-politician came from nowhere to nearly win. Palin's endorsement. more than anything else, is what brought Hoffman that close.
Whaaaaaaaaat????....O'Bidope is Wrong??...I'm Shocked!
Yes, stupid, blind, and ignorant, the last largely by choice, which makes it unforgiveable.
Apparently, 'spending money in order, not to go bankrupt,' isn't a great strategy either.
Everything is more complicated than knowing how many letters are in the word jobs.
This is one of the many things more complicated than knowing how many letters are in the word jobs.
That is exactly why I keep saying we need to be concerned about the mid-term elections so we can repeal some of these things if they go through.
Wait a minute, didn't Huck throw his support to Hoffman just before the election. Huck can sniff all he wants. One Facebook post brought in a flood of much needed cash, volunteers, and opened the floodgates to numerous other endorsements, which took Hoffman from last place to within 3 points of winning. I'd say that was pretty remarkable. When has an endorsement by Huck ever helped anyone? True, Hoffman ultimately lost, but Palin's impact on the race cannot be disputed.
I can see it now about a week to ten days in the North American Tour of “Going Rogue” will be scraped because of the size of the crowds. I do not think Harper Collins have any idea what the crowd size is going to be. I seen one stop had Sarah from 7-9 pm at some mall. Yea right 2 hrs is going to be enough time for all that show up. For Sarah’s sake I really, really hope it is not a PR FUBAR.
TOMORROW PELOSI'S CONGRESS MEETS TO VOTE ON HEALTH CARE!
SARAH PALIN SHOULD ANNOUNCE TODAY THAT SHE WILL BE
STANDING ON THE STEPS OF "OUR HOUSE" WHILE THEY VOTED.
IF SHE DID, HOW MANY PEOPLE WOULD BE STANDING WITH HER?
STAND SARAH STAND :-)
Actually, they were pre-resignation but then the Cone of Silence descended for more than a month. I thought they'd soured on her - and maybe they did.
But they seem to have come around ... ;)
CharterOakie, you are so right. Hoffman went from 0-60 in record time because of Palin.
I heard this same misreading of the Palin effect last night on Joe Scarborough's radio show. He and Mike had Katy Kay (BBC - what else do you need to know) on there to talk about the Tuesday elections. Of course this trio misread the outcome.
The MSM line is that McDonnell won in Virginia because he downplayed social issues and rebuffed the Palin/Beck crowd. Okay, but we all know he's a social conservative as well. The Washington Post, dug up his 20 year old thesis pounded this theme. There were ads run telling us bascially that McDonnell was going to return women to the 1950s. It's not like his social conservatives bonafides were hidden from the public.
NY...........Hoffman was completely unknown before Palin shined her light on him. He almost won people. He almost won because of Palin's support. He lost because establishment Republicans spent money on Dede, and then she endorsed the Democrat.
And remember last year. McCain was not a challenger until he picked Sarah to join him on the ticket.
The MSM wants us to believe that we have to appeal to moderates to win and to forget conservatives. So wrong. If Republicans appeal only to moderates, they'll never have enough votes to win. But if they appeal to moderates and conservatives they're unstoppable, especially in a time when liberals are showing us just how crazy they are.
Where are moderates going to go in 2010? Obama and company are crazed with jamming their agenda down our throats. Every idea they have is bad for the economy and they won't be able to hide that fact next year. So when it's time to vote in 2010, and the economy is still suffering, and people start to realize that Republicans/Conservatives have the common sense ideas that will save us, where will moderates go? They'll do like this year and vote Republican.
Democrats didn't scare off moderates in Virginia. And that tired old tactic won't work next year either.
The MSM is so sad and so terrified. They continue to try to tell us that Sarah is bad for the Republican party. The opposite is true and they know it. They're like children who shut their eyes and pretend that "the bad thing" doesn't exist. Sarah haunts them. It's so fun to watch.
Al Gore is a case in point. He is on the cover of Newsweek this week with the title "The Thinking Man's Thinking Man."
This, after having the mic shut off for a man who wanted to ask how polar bears are endangered when their numbers are increasing.
And after refusing for years to debate Lord Moncton on global warming.
And after NINE MAJOR ERRORS were discovered in his Academy Award winning "An Inconvenient Truth." (Wonder if there are any Norwegians on the Academy voting board?)
And this from the magazine that had Sarah Palin's unphotoshopped face on the cover with the title "She's One of Us (and that's the problem)."
Journalistic ideological malpractice is blatant, vulgar, and destructive.
Sarah's going on most of the Fox shows.
I don't think she'll be going on Huckabee.
What say you? ;)
It will be fun to contrast Huck's book tour, which starts on Nov 16th, to that of Gov. Palin. I suspect many of her stops will turn into impromptu rallies, complete with chants, signs and banners. I'm going to the Mall of America signing on Dec 7th, and I'll watch and see how many people are wearing Palin 2012 t-shirts, buttoms etc., and see if any cheering etc takes place.
I suspect Huck's signings will be small, quiet affairs.
GAHanson,
I think it is sad if he doesn't have her on. The female that on a Presidential ticket received the Highest % of vote, most votes and most electoral college votes and he refuses to have her on? That shows that his show is only for political purposes.
If only to sing "Barracuda" and see if Huck can keep up [on the bass].
IBD is fantastic in their straight up common sense. No wonder they like the Guv.
They need to be all day events. I'm hopeing that there will be a much larger tour after Christmas but i'm beginning to doubt it . It looks like there are going to be a lot of speaking events , plus the start of the 2010 ecection cycle. Sarah will be speaking in Fl the day after the Daytona 500 start hitting the Nascar E-MAIL to get Sarah there to wave the green flag and Todd to give the start engine command. Its looking like Danica Patrick may be driving for JR motor sports in the nationwide series at Daytona. If that happens this will be the biggest 500 in years. And if Sarah couls be there it would be the biggest ever media event.
Saab was the most intelligent car ever built.
Yes they are.
If I get lucky enough to have Sarah sign my book, you better believe that I'm gonna have her sign it "President Palin". :-)
not quite 3rd world status, but I get your point.
I think you might be right about Saab, but what is your point ? Just askin'
Every tie the constitution referes to itself it says: THIS constitution or it says the constitution of the united States.
The point of contention is article VI:
"This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwith-standing."
So its clear that the first reference is to the Constitution of the United States, and the second to the constitution of the individual States. It makes total sense since a state has to abide by a Treaty made by the USA. Second note that Treaties are made under the Authority of the united States. They don't take precedence over the United States. And last, but not as important is the order to the laws to which the States must abide: The Constitution, the laws of the United States, and last the Treaties.
So the idea that Treaties overcome the Constitution (changes to which must be ratified by 3/4 of the States) is complete hogash.. and a dangerous thing to propose.
Agreed.
I agree.
Maybe they 'Got Smart...." ;-)
