James V. DeLong: Sarah Palin and the Dysfunctional Political Class
James V. DeLong, in an article for Pajamas Media, wrote:
The frenetic hostility to Sarah Palin, even by many on the Republican side, is unnerving, because her qualifications to be president are objectively better than those of almost anyone who has been on the national ticket over the past decade.
A reasonable conclusion is that these qualifications are precisely the cause of the hostility. To admit to the reality that the dominant political class, including the MSM and the punditocracy of both parties, has been giving us abysmal presidential candidates, to accept that a hockey mom plucked from small-town Alaska is better than the best that the political class can come up with, would require recognition of the terrible truth that the system has become deeply dysfunctional. Doing this would force our political elites to look into an abyss of serious questions about the functioning of our democracy. Palin creates a cognitive dissonance so intense that it simply cannot be accepted.
To start, compare her experience as a person, mayor, and state leader with George W. Bush’s pre-presidential career as an alcoholic, baseball executive, and ornamental governor. Whatever one thinks of his performance as president — and like most conservatives my views are complex — he was not promising material as of 2000.
Al Gore would be disqualified by knowledge of his academic career and by a reading of Earth in the Balance, an exercise in messianic ignorance. His subsequent career getting rich from climate change subsidies would reinforce this opinion. John Kerry had a Senate career of unbroken mediocrity, compounded by his unapologized-for Winter Soldier exercise and the still-unanswered Swift Boat questions.
John Edwards had no shadow of a qualification, and again the judgment is confirmed by subsequent events.
Obama’s qualifications were will-o-the-wisp. His supporters cited his “potential,” as they had to, because his only actual feat was his first book — and the claims that this was ghosted have been met by non-denial. The Asia Times characterizes these rumors as “well-established,” which tells one something about current foreign assessments of Obama. The president’s long-standing ties to the radical left should have tipped the balance to the negative.
Vice President Joe Biden has a long history of blurring the line between fantasy and reality to a degree that one wonders if he sees any distinction, but 36 years of this is enough to make him “qualified.” This, too, tells a lot about the mental processes of the dominant political class.
One can deeply respect John McCain’s courage and service. But he is an erratic senator, with a tendency to reach decisions on a whim and then excoriate anyone who disagrees. As demonstrated by McCain-Feingold — which hamstrings the middle-class base of the Republicans while leaving intact the power of unions and public employees, the media, the rich, and Native American tribes — McCain does not, or cannot, think even two moves ahead.
Read the rest here. It's very good.

Barack was a community organizer with no exective experience, Sarah was the commander of the National Guard, hm...who would I trust with National Defense?
Sarah Now and in 2012!
How ironic that America apparently promotes robust feminism but refuses to shun misogyny or the TRIVIALIZATION of female attributes or stereotypes.
HaHA FOX is talking about t paw being in Iowa to stick his presidential toe in the water. All Sarah would have to do is stop and use a restroom at a truck stop in Des Moines and she'd beat T Paw in the Iowa Caucus. BwahahahahaHA. COUGH COUGH. HAHA. COUGH.
Great find Doug. As a lover of wit, I'm jealous I didn't compose this sentence:
"Indeed, Palin’s refusal to fulfill their desires that she be a clown or take a proper role in the kabuki theater of Washington is making them angrier than ever and more determined to marginalize her."

I have had it with this freaking party. I don’t know who is pulling the strings but after Sarah’s book tour, Steele and others better get Sarah out there raising money, 24/7. It is going to take a lot of money to get the dems out of office in 2010. Sarah can raise tons for the republicans to fight the liberal machine.
Moveon has already raised 3.5 million to go after dems they don’t like.
If the top republicans don’t embrace Sarah then maybe it is time to threaten them with a third party. This bullshit has got to stop.
I will never forgive BOR for putting Obama on TV hours before McCain gave his Convention speech. That freaking interview started the move toward Obama.
After the election Sarah’s numbers were up because she was still on TV talking to the American people.
Let’s hope the senate doesn’t try to ram the health care bill through before Sarah starts her TV blitz.
And for those of you who think Sarah should be doing more, what do you think the interviews are all about? Sarah doesn't have to do interviews for her book to be a best seller. Hell! She doesn't even have to do book signings.

Sarah needs to make an Iowa book stop!!! This would set things ablaze, and also Huckster not sure if he wants to get into the fray...did he come out against the healthcare bill??
Romney , not a peep....
Sarah now and 2012!
I think the reference to Bush's drinking issues was inappropriate in the discussion of qualifications for the presidency. That's not too different than saying Huckabee shouldn't be president because he used to be obese, or Obama shouldn't be president because he smoked pot when he was in college. Personally, I think people who overcome their own demons show the force of character that you want in the presidency. I'm not condoning any of these behaviors, and I think there are some that should be of greater concern. Obama's drug use bothers me because it was illegal behavior. (Plus I think it's pretty pathetic the guy can't kidk the smokes) But, I may be splitting hairs.
I think Sarah Palin showed us the courage of her character when at 40 plus she found herself pregnant with a child with Down Syndrome and she chose to "walk the talk".
I think this is a weak article. I am impressed with Gov Palin having helped her husband run their commercial fishing business, having attended regular ol' state colleges, having started as a small town mayor. But, by the same token, President Obama's experiences of being in a biracial home, spending some of his childhood overseas, working in the inner city, those are legitimate experiences as well.
The discussion should not be about various and sundry qualifications. The Left used that mantra quite successfully in the last election. They were smart. They knew their candidate had nearly zero experience for the job. Obama was really a totally green candidate. So what they had to do was make him look like some friggin' genius. That he would be a great president because of his huge store of wisdom and his cool and thoughtful demeanor. To play this up, they had to set their sites on making Sarah Palin look like the Village Idiot and an irrational, emotional female. They sucked Republicans into their battlefield and it worked.
There's no winning a "who's smarter" contest. Because there are all kinds and varieties of what's smart.
What Palinistas need to focus on is policies and records. I don't know how many people I know who voted for Obama thinking he really was interested in reducing abortions because he said he was on the campaign trail. They didn't look at his RECORD. His first act as president was to open funding for overseas abortions clinics, and then they were shocked. The Dems duped the voters and the Republicans sat around and let them do it.
Right here in my own district, the middle of the Bible belt, with a stinking gigantic Church of Christ college right in the middle of it where they won't even let you teach unless you go to church every Sunday, right here we have a left wing Democratic representative. He's a medical doctor who has actually PERFORMED 3RD TRIMESTER ABORTIONS gets elected year after year. He votes almost down the line party line dem on every stinking bill. Why does he keep getting elected? Because nobody bothers to look at his RECORD or his POLICIES. This state went 30 percent for Palin. And believe me, it was Palin, not McCain. Why are they voting in this Snyder. Because the Republicans don't show voters what he really stands for. That's why Blanche Lincoln's butt is on the burner. Because she's a blue dog and this health care vote is on the line, people are actually looking at how these jokers are voting, so her seat is now on the line. If she votes with Reid, she will probably lose her seat. She's running behind nearly every potential Republican and they haven't yet chosen their candidate.
Bottom line, Conservatives need to focus on policies and records. And get off all this Entertainment Tonight stuff.
Well, I know Oprah will be grinning, if this bill is passed by the Senate, Sarah needs to take down a bunch of these clowns who have no passion for Americans, vote them out, help them pack there bags and by them a one way ticket out of DC, feed up with this all, gas prices rising, no one doing anything about that, Afghanistan, still in quicksand over that one, come on, what is so freaking GOOD about this administation, NOTHING.
Fired them all in 2010...........vote Obama out and his czars in 2012!
Sarah now and in 2012!
Dr Vicki, excellent post.
A lot is made of Mr. Obama's black/ biracial family.
May I please remind you that Todd Palin is an enrolled Alaskan Native American?
Technically, Sarah Palin married outside her race.
minorities, and especially Native Americans, never give her credit for that.
P.S. I don't mean we voted 30 percent for Palin, I mean she and McCain beat Obama by 30 percent.
WOW!! Two excellent articles about Sarah posted on C4Palin on the same Sunday morning!! LOVED THEM BOTH. Thanks for posting them.
Mom in Wisconsin
On a lighter note: A teacher in New York asked her 6th grade class how many of them were Obama fans. Not really knowing what an Obama fan was, but wanting to be liked by the teacher, all of the kids raised their hands except for Little Johnny. The teacher asked Little Johnny why he decided to be different... again. Little Johnny said, "Because I am not an Obama fan!" The teacher said, "Why aren't you an Obama fan?" Johnny said, "Because I am a SARAH PALIN fan." The teacher asked why he was a Sarah Palin fan and Little Johnny answered, "My dad is a Sarah Palin fan and my mom is a Sarah Palin fan, so I'm a Sarah Palin fan."
The teacher asks, "If your mom was a moron and your dad was an idiot, what would that make you?" With a great big smile, Johnny said, "That would make me an Obama fan!"
I always did like Little Johnny.
Absolutely, Gelston, I agree.
People want to vote for someone who they think knows something about their lives. For example, during the election, the price of gas was skyrocketing. Sarah Palin knew more about energy issues that ANYONE in the campaign. But instead of capitalizing on that, the mcCain camp had her out bashing obama over the Bill Ayers crap.
They absolutely squandered her positives. She could have reached out to people on energy, she could have reached out to small business owners, she could have reached out to Union members (via Todd).
Instead they let the Dems and the lame stream media suck them into an argument of who was smarter. Instead of sticking to issues of who is going to help you.
Most people don't buy the Smart argument. Because we all know smart people are capable of being very wrong and doing very stupid things. The reason it worked was because they were able to create enough doubt of Gov Palin's competency. If they'd had her focused on her record and policies instead of trying to get in a brain game, they could have won that election.
For example, when Charlie Gibson asked her about the Bush Doctrine, a real Palin answer would have been, "Charlie, it doesn't realy matter what Bush's Doctrine was, what John and I plan to do in our presidency is >>>>>>>>
And when Katie couric says, what do you read, a Palin answer would have been, You know, Katie, for the past 2 years, I've been totally focused on Alaska and getting this pipeline built from Alaska to the lower 48.
She should have spun every answer to what her record and her policies were. Instead that had her playing Jeopardy questions.
Well, I have two masters degrees and a doctorate, and I couldn't win a single round of Jeopardy. No kidding. But I have a successful career as a teacher and am running a successful business.
People want to know what you've done and what you plan to do. And if you really believe in democracy, if her record and her plans don't line up with what most people want and believe then she shouldn't be president. If it does, then she should.
What it shouldn't be about is who made more A's in college or who published the most articles in Harvard Monthly.
William Henley....ROTF-LMAO You just made my day brighter, thank you.
sarah rocks 2012
Don't freak out. Keep your head about you. Remember Sarah said to trust her. That to me means all the time. If we freak out then we don't think straight and make wishy decisions that would be more harmful. Come up with your own plan for you planned to reach voters that you are around, voters that you know. Nothing will matter but votes. sarah is doing her part. We must do ours, but reasonably.
It's not going to be left up to the top, but to the bottom to win. Strategize.
Dr. Vicki,
Excellent points. but I have to disagree when you compare Obama's life experiences with Sarah's. They're like night and day.
Sarah "worked her way up" so to speak and does have experience with leadership, finances and all that entails running a business AND a state.
Obama has neither. According to your "theory", EVERYBODY'S "life experiences" should then have such high qualifications, no matter how "trivial" they are.
During the election, both candidates "qualifications" were VERY well known. To elect someone who has no "qualifications" over someone who does, showed me that those "qualifications" weren't important to them. Having wonderful oratory skills, only having to promise change (and the moon) without having to delve deeper, and being black (YEA, I SAID IT) was what people wanted.
They voted their emotions instead of their head.
As my aged father-in-law says...."you should have to take some kind of test before you're allowed to vote."...lol
William.....Good job..lol lol
Doug,
Thank you for posting this article. Very good stuff!
When an elitist pundit makes a judgment about who would make a good president by how well that person's pants are creased, that is off the charts fruit loopery.
Terri
We all place values on people's experiences according to our own value systems. Even though I am very well educated, I personally value "hard knocks" learning over the ivy league variety. So, for me, Sarah Palin's background is more valid. But that's not true for a lot of other folks. Remember how some people made fun of the fact that she didn't have a passport until she went to visit the Alaskan Nat'l Guard overseas? To them, his exposure to other cultures and living overseas was a valid attribute. Some think being a senator from a big state more valid than governor of a small state.
That's my point. After a point, there's no real way to compare experiences. It's a waste of time to argue over whether being a governor is more important than being a senator.
I'm saying we need to emphasis record and policies. I'm saying if the campaign had focused more on Gov Palin's record and her policies, she might well be our vp right now. Instead it turned into a personality war.
Personally, I don't care for Obama or his policies at all. But to say his achievements aren't worth much I think is not valid. He did dig up from being dumped by his dad, raised, sounds like, mostly by grandparents. I don't think he just floated through life and achieved success accidentally or because he's black. I think it's the same thing as people trying to say Gov Palin got where she got by luck or because she's hot.
He's successful. She's successful. That's not at issue. What's at issue is who has the policies we most want in our president.
Wonderful!
