Mike Huckabee Wants to Have it Both Ways on the NY-23 Race; Updated

In an article for Morning Call, Josh Drobnyk interviewed Mike Huckabee. One part of the interview stands out:

Q: How do you explain what happened over the weekend in New York's 23rd Congressional District, where the Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava, a supporter of abortion rights and gay marriage, dropped out of the special election after a revolt by conservatives against her candidacy?

A: The Republican Party is getting a good lesson in where people are. It to me was an affirmation that if Republicans want to win elections and want to get the enthusiasm of not just Republicans but conservatives behind them they've got to have at least some grounding in conservative views. But the other thing that it points out is how [some people] don't understand the intricacies of how politics really work. They want to say that all of the Republicans who either supported Dede or didn't support [Conservative Party candidate] Doug Hoffman, they are cowards. Well, no. In some cases it is that you understand that an independent, third-party candidate doesn't typically win with a three-man race. It only spoils it and gives it to the Democrat.

It certainly looks like The Huckster is trying to have it both ways here. First, he attempts to place himself on the side of the conservative grass roots when he admonishes the Republicans to be grounded in conservative views. I guess he assumes we forgot that, when it mattered, he dissembled incoherently on whether or not he would endorse Doug Hoffman. He said he agreed with Doug Hoffman on the issues, but he couldn't endorse him because he was giving a speech or something. Like Newt Gingrich, he didn’t make the right decision until after Scozzafava withdrew. Better late than never I guess.

Next, Huckabee insults the intelligence of the grass roots, essentially claiming they don’t understand the “intricacies” of elections by implying that if they did possess as deep and cosmopolitan an understanding as he, they would understand why he didn’t get off the fence and support Doug Hoffman when it mattered as Governor Palin did. Apparently he wants us to believe that his inability to make a decision was really an inspired act of principled sophistication and not the gutless waffling portrayed by conservatives.

Finally, Huckabee justifies the Newt Gingrich position with that tired old chestnut that a vote for a third party candidate, such as Doug Hoffman, would “spoil” the race and give it to the Democrat candidate. Is it just me or does his last point contradict his first? Like a typical politician, he tries to please everybody by giving a non-answer designed to do just that. Can anyone imagine Governor Palin giving an answer like that? I know I can’t.

On a lighter note, we’re all familiar with Governor Palin’s sublime smack down of the hopelessly overmatched Joe Biden yesterday. The Vice-President made some characteristically ill-informed comments at a sparsely attended campaign rally for Doug Hoffman’s Democrat opponent. Josh Painter and Gary P have interesting perspectives on the very one-sided affair. One wonders if Joe Biden will ever learn that he doesn't belong in the big leagues. Had it been a boxing match yesterday, the referee would have stopped the fight.

Update by Doug: (H/T jimr3) Brendan Miniter of the Wall Street Journal has more on the NY-23 race and it's impact on establishment Republicans such as Huckabee, Romney, and Gingrich as compared to it's impact on those like Governor Palin who took a principled position:

Amidst the stunning events in New York's 23rd congressional district -- with Republican-turned-independent Doug Hoffman suddenly surging to the front and likely to win today's race -- collateral damage has been suffered by some of the GOP's presidential hopefuls who misread the race and the mood of the Republican electorate.

Mitt Romney -- formerly a man who seemed willing to show up and plug for any Republican anywhere to pick up a few chits -- was nowhere to be seen in the district. Mike Huckabee, a favorite for religious conservatives who demonstrated a gift for gab in last year's Republican presidential primaries, materialized at an event near the district last week but didn't venture into it or speak up for Mr. Hoffman.

Newt Gingrich, though, may have taken the biggest hit to his relevance. He threw his weight behind Dede Scozzafava, the liberal Republican assemblywoman picked to run by local party bosses, just days before a GOP revolt pushed her out of the race. "I felt very deeply that when you have all 11 county chairman voting for someone, that it wasn't appropriate for me to come in and render my judgment," he now says.

[...]

In contrast, pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List, the Club for Growth, Fred Thompson and Dick Armey all endorsed Mr. Hoffman. Then there's Sarah Palin, whose endorsement of Mr. Hoffman focused national media attention on the race and seemed to set in motion the collapse of support for Ms. Scozzafava. Lucky or otherwise, Ms. Palin comes out looking like a leader and Mr. Gingrich doesn't.

More here.

intricacies???
Politics if pretty simple to me. There are two types of politicians: those in it for themselves/ their party, and those in it for the good of the country. In the NY congressional race these two differences could not have been more obvious!

Aw Schucksabee is so wise!

Cowards is such a harsh word.
Couldn't we use, something like Fence Sitter?
Or, Wind Direction Detector?
How about: Won't Stick My Neck Out Person.
Little Rocker?

One label that won't stick: Principled.

Nancy,  November 3, 2009 2:51 PM

You said cowards, not me, Mr. Huckabee.

Deidre,  November 3, 2009 2:53 PM

RomneyCare

Whitney,  November 3, 2009 2:57 PM

OT random thought....A year ago today was election day of 2008. In November 2005, was John Edwards  the bold voice of the opposition? In November 2001, was Joe Lieberman influence off year elections? In November 1997, was Jack Kemp causing Democrats to get wee-weed up? In November 1993, was Dan Quayle the loud, principled voice against HillaryCare?

For a VP loser, Gov. Palin is sure effective.

Nancy,  November 3, 2009 2:59 PM

Cruela,
How did you get the clip of Axelrod and Emmanual entertaining the President last night?

CruelaDev,  November 3, 2009 3:03 PM

Inside sources! ;)

Bestbud,  November 3, 2009 3:05 PM

What was it Huckabee said?... Republicans have to have AT LEAST some RESEMBLANCE of CONSERVATISM?... maybe Im taking this out of context--but even if it were in context... how telling!
He sounds like Biden!!

Bestbud,  November 3, 2009 3:11 PM

Whitney, Im an old guy, never has a loosing VP come even close to Sarah, during the election and especially post-election... and we have 3 yrs until 2012, more and better is yet to come.

Southern Gent,  November 3, 2009 3:14 PM

Mike Huckabee is preaching this Sunday the 15th at a local Baptist church here in Albany, Georgia.  Hmmmm... might be worth the price of admission.

PEC,  November 3, 2009 3:15 PM

About as bad as I watched the video of Chrissy Mathews yeaterday.  Yes he did compliment along with Howard Fineman what Sarah was doing on Facebook (basically they too had never seen anything like it but realized it was working).  Where Chrissy got it wrong was the belief that it was a well orchestrated Washington Insider doing it for Sarah.  No Chrissy, it is Sarah being Sarah.  If it is efective it is pure Sarah.  My guess is if Sarah has a staff they are a bunch of outside the beltwayers (Kris Perry, Meg and maybe a few others that names I will not mention) helping her with data and then just sending out what Sarah thinks.

yogi41,  November 3, 2009 3:18 PM

I like Little Rocker; that's perfect!

Nancy,  November 3, 2009 3:18 PM

PEC,
I pray, we at C4P would know the names.:)

CruelaDev,  November 3, 2009 3:18 PM

I'm thinkin' again....

I wonder if Huckster ponders what side of the Kleenex he is supposed to blow his nose on?....
He probably sits there for hours trying to decide!

juju,  November 3, 2009 3:19 PM

And, the other day he said he could never support or vote for any candidate unless they were
against abortion and gay marriage.  He keeps having didn't objectives about who he will or will not support.  But, that isn't important as chainging your excuse on a daily basis is not good.
If you have principals and stick to them you don't have to keep explaining your position.

My mother always told me..."Tell the truth and then you don't have to remember what you
said".

Nancy,  November 3, 2009 3:19 PM

PEC,
I pray, that we at C4P would know the names, if you mentioned them.:)

juju,  November 3, 2009 3:20 PM

Huck might make a good running mate for Biden.

Bestbud,  November 3, 2009 3:20 PM

What do you Think?

I have not seen much talk about WHEN Sarah will announce for President!... Im asking this as one who believes she will never officially run for almost 2yrs like Obama... un-officially campaign, most certainly, as she said she would when supporting others or taking stance on issues!

Would she wait as late as January 2012?...

narciso,  November 3, 2009 3:23 PM

Of course, that all depends on what the definition of the word is is.

Excellent!... that very thing to me is what is so impressive about Sarah... Principles and Truth!

Lies harbor more lies... as I get older I have a difficult time remembering the truth of what I said much less the lies.

jimr3,  November 3, 2009 3:33 PM

Huckabee is such a whiner.

O/T

The Fox Nation has posted the YouTube video "Quit Making Things Up: DNC"
http://www.thefoxnation.com/politics/2009/11/03/palin-tells-dnc-quit-making-things

The video now has almost 37,000 views!

Bestbud,  November 3, 2009 3:36 PM

CruelaDev

That is a classic!... it probably applies to toilet paper too, if he is sitting for hours... heck he may use both sides... like wanting it both ways on issues.

Money Maven,  November 3, 2009 3:40 PM

The Dems would love the Huckster to be our nominee for president.  Only then will we all see the many Huckabee sermons that they will use to against him.   There are still a lot of old Huckabee tapes that were never release.

He would be easily defeated by Obama.

Everything we need to know about Gov.Palin is already out there.  She has everything to gain by waiting to announce her candidacy at the last minute when all these men make a fool of themselves pandering to be president.

Sorry Guys but it's  time that GOP men understand they have messed up this party too much with scandals and fiscal irresponsibility.  GOP women are rescuing this from the ashes.

If not Palin, the GOP nominee will be a woman or someone who is not one of the traditional beltway types.

CruelaDev,  November 3, 2009 3:42 PM

I was trying once again to be 'politically correct"...so I used 'kleenex"...and not TP!! ;)

Anonymous,  November 3, 2009 3:48 PM

Huckabee is a weasel, all you have to do is listen to him a while.

Bestbud,  November 3, 2009 3:49 PM

i would sure like to know who her inner circle is, for that matter an outer circle too!

I remember seeing a video of Sarah as she was walking with Todd on her way to her victory celebration from what must have been the location she watched her governors election results...

What was telling to me was this... She said to Todd "what do we claim!"... his immediate and stern-sounding response... "NOTHING!".... He was a little less caught up in the excitement of the moment and provided her with sound advice... What a couple!!

Bill in Baltimore,  November 3, 2009 3:49 PM

I'll go with Palin :-)

Deidre,  November 3, 2009 3:50 PM

A plurality of NY-23 voters have an unfavorable opinion of Palin- in an R+14 electorate with Hoffman up by 17: http://tinyurl.com/yjhmmmd

53% of moderate Republicans in NY-23 have negative opinion of Palin, only 32% favorable: http://tinyurl.com/yjhmmmd

If Palin can’t make it in the North Country, hard to see how she can make it nationally
23 minutes ago from web

I honestly don't know how she can poll so bad.  I'm serious.  Rush says they are scared of her, I absolutely LOVE her, and she just has such poor approval ratings.  It's disheartening!!!

PEC,  November 3, 2009 3:53 PM

Nancy, All I can do is pray that the names that I will not mention is part of the team.  I will say C4P is very deep in quality of Contributors but some aren't around that was arguably the best.  Who knows maybe their regular jobs swamped them.  I just think they were smart, articulate and not tied to Washington.  Always need for such individuals on a staff.  To answer no I do not know anything (I would probably pass out if I got called by Sarah or her staff) but always room for speculation.

CruelaDev,  November 3, 2009 3:54 PM

Huckster is like Mick Jagger...just does not really know when ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!  Nothing More to See Here....Move Along!
Hey "Little Rocker"...Hang it up and just go sit in your 'Rocker!"

jimr3,  November 3, 2009 3:55 PM

techno, check this out.

Brendan Miniter writing in the Wall Street Journal has something to say about Romney's no show.

"Gingrich Comes Up Short"
"And Romney was nowhere to be seen."

Mitt Romney -- formerly a man who seemed willing to show up and plug for any Republican anywhere to pick up a few chits -- was nowhere to be seen in the district.

PEC,
You are so right about the very deep quality of Contributors at C4P. I guess I just really hope and pray some of the best of the best from here, are workiing with Governor Palin in some capacity.:)

Sheya,  November 3, 2009 4:01 PM

Actually its probably much higher than that. Last night it was stuck at 311 for 9 hours then it jumped up to 15,000 3 hours later to 25,000 then to 35,000. And its been not at the 37,000 count for about 3 hours now.

YouTube notes that popular videos take hours to update. I predict we'll be at 50,000 by the end of the day.

latinchic,  November 3, 2009 4:01 PM

"But the other thing that it points out is how [some people] don't understand the intricacies of how politics really work. They want to say that all of the Republicans who either supported Dede or didn't support [Conservative Party candidate] Doug Hoffman, they are cowards."

Uh, no sir. We're not TRYING to say it. We ARE saying it:  YOU'RE COWARDS.

riley4palin,  November 3, 2009 4:13 PM

Remember the media narrative for Governor Palin.  It has to stay negative because she is the largest threat to Obama in 2012.

Mia,  November 3, 2009 4:13 PM

Why do I Bother....What a waste... of precious time...
YOUR Sick Creula!...;)

PEC,  November 3, 2009 4:15 PM

The only issue is they said it was a Palin video.  Not true it is a C4P video.

Dan C,  November 3, 2009 4:16 PM

Most polls are lies. By the way, how does PPP (DEM NEO MARXIST POLSTER) explain how Hoffman was in third and then Palin endorsed him and now hes looking like a winner?

PEC,  November 3, 2009 4:21 PM

Obama was over 70% but now is about 50%.  So what is the point of this poll?  Judging by Sarah with Michigan I don't see her conceding much if anything but I don't think losing NY ends her chances.  Actually her 43-44 overall # looked good.  Once she shows the moderates that she is more a social pragmatist when Governing and more a common sense fiscal conservative these #s change dramatically.

jimr3,  November 3, 2009 4:22 PM

Umm,

Kathryn Jean Lopez of National Review Online is wondering, "Where’s Mitt Romney?" in NY-23.
http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZGJmNDU2YmRiM2RkOGY4MjY4ZWQ3MjdhMmZiYWVmMmE=&w=MA==

Sheya,  November 3, 2009 4:24 PM

Well, they didn’t really mislead. The Governor put it on her Facebook, which in a way means she’s validating it, and probably the reason FoxNation put it up.

PEC,  November 3, 2009 4:26 PM

It would be nice if she decides to run to see an articulate no nonsense Lebanese-American doing some talking for her.

Money Maven,  November 3, 2009 4:26 PM

As long as Obamacare is in the news, Mittens political ambitions are doomed.  More bad news for Mitt, Obamacare might go into January 2010.  Mitt Romeny would rather talk about foreign policy right now.

Sheya,  November 3, 2009 4:27 PM

techno, whats you're predicitons for tonight.
I say, McDonall 53-56% Hoffman 52-55% Christie 2% (then the dems will come and steal it like frankin)

Sheya,  November 3, 2009 4:28 PM

Forget polls, 3 years to go. I am sure I can dig up a poll that had the same numbers on Obama 3 years ago.
Palin has work to do, but she'll get there!

Nancy,  November 3, 2009 4:29 PM

Classic!
Thanks Cruela!:)

Sheya,  November 3, 2009 4:30 PM

They change the tone everyday, a couple of weeks ago they were saying that she has no just to win the nomination because she does everything herself and has no advisers. That’s MSNBC for you.

wisetrog,  November 3, 2009 4:31 PM

In that case, I'd assume the majority of non social conservatives will come to her. iowa may go to huck but NH may come to Sarah. We'll see.

wisetrog,  November 3, 2009 4:34 PM

oops, katherine are you having doubts about your crush?

juju,  November 3, 2009 4:36 PM

I knew that when he said he fried squirrel in a pop corn popper.  Anyone that knows anything knows it is best to fry squirrel in an iron skillet.

hrh,  November 3, 2009 4:39 PM

I was gonna' say kudos to Katherine for being honest about Mitt's cowardice.

But this piece was actually a 3-page apologetic for how Mitt is presenting himself as the establishment moderate, who no longer has to try to be a conservative, or attack other candidates but just be the strong, steady establishment candidate who stays "above the fray."

Sounds like he's going to run the Obama playbook. Yet more reason to be ick on Romney. And on Lopez for carrying his water for him.

juju,  November 3, 2009 4:39 PM

She polls so badly because people really don't know her.  They see her as the dumbo the press and the dems have made her out to be.  She will be setting them straight this next year.  It is better to be polled low and go high then be high and go low.  It is far far too early for any of this to have any real meaning.

GAHanson,  November 3, 2009 4:40 PM

A couple of hours ago I heard that robocalls from Rudy G. were in full swing throughout NY23 urging people to vote for Hoffman.  That's cutting it pretty close Rudy.

CruelaDev,  November 3, 2009 4:40 PM

Mittens has been found!  His nose is alittle sore..but he has been found!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niPi-jrZ2aA&feature=response_watch

riley4palin,  November 3, 2009 4:41 PM

But....but....but....President Obama campaigned for him.  This just doesn't make any sense.

Chuck Todd, can you please help me understand?

riley4palin,  November 3, 2009 4:43 PM

And here I thought Kathryn Jean Lopez was going to be unbiased about Mittens.

Nope, Mittens is still on her speed dial.

What a pathetic piece.

Special shout out to K-Lo for making sure to post Pawlenty's endorsement of Hoffmann before Governor Palin's in her article.

Nancy,  November 3, 2009 4:48 PM

O/T I heard a robocall President Obama did for John Corzine in New Jersey.
It begins with: "I want to apologize for disturbing you".
I think that is very thoughtful.
But.......aren't there alot of jokes......there?
What was TOTUS thinking?
