MSNBC Correspondent Accosts 17-year Old Girl at Grand Rapids Book Signing; UPDATED: O'Donnell has Geography Issues Too
At Governor Palin's book signing event in Grand Rapids, Norah O'Donnell of MSNBC attempts to bully a 17-year old girl who was waiting in line to have her book signed:
This is bizzare on so many levels. First, Norah O'Donnell is the chief Washington correspondent for MSNBC. I know being the chief anything at MSNBC is akin to being the scout team leader on a high school football squad, but badgering a 17-year old girl is beneath even an MSNBC reporter (or so I thought). I guess O'Donnell was not confident enough in her abilities to pick on someone her own age. I can see why. Jackie Seal, the 17-year old girl, got the better of her and demonstrated a far greater knowledge of the constitution than Ms. O'Donnell.
As luck would have it, young Miss Seal has her own blog and she decided to post on Wednesday evening's experience with the tedious Ms. O'Donnell. Here, in her own words, Miss Seal describes the events which ultimately resulted in her encounter with MSNBC's peculiar chief Washington correspondent:
My dad and I arrived at the Barnes and Noble at 11 pmTuesday evening. There were 2 tents in front of us; we were probably number 15 or so in line. It was a chilly evening but I enjoyed some good conversation from several Palin fans. We talked about Obama, Palin and just some other stuff. We sat outside in the cold, bundled up until 5:30 am. At that time they ushered us inside where we had to sit outside the B&N entrance until 7am. We received our bracelets at 7am and were told if we’d like to be guaranteed to see Palin we should remain in line all day. So I did. I was not about to lose a chance at seeing Sarah Palin after sitting in line out in the freezing cold for hours. So I sat, and sat… I read some of her book and then the media circus began. I spotted Norah O’Donnell and Andrea Mitchell right off the bat and couldn’t believe they were there.. I mean I thought they hated Sarah Palin. I thought Sarah Palin had no impact, she was a nobody yet they send their 2 big guns to cover her book tour..but I digress.
[...]
I was first approached by a New York Times writer who wrote what my shirt said and then asked me a couple questions. She asked me what it was I liked about Sarah Palin. I said, “As a young female she is someone I can look up to, before her the only prominent female in politics I had known about was Hilary Clinton, whom I respect don’t get me wrong, I respect her but when you don’t agree with someone it’s hard to really look up to them. I like how Sarah Palin will speak her mind, regardless of what the media will say about it.”
[...]
I then see Norah O’Donnell approach a man all decked out in Palin garb. She asked him a few questions (camera not rolling) then said she’d like to have a woman in the shot. She asked a woman who refused then pointed at me and said “Hey talk to her” So I walked over. I knew I was walking into hot water with MSNBC- thought I was prepared….Seconds later I met her… One of the many faces of liberal media bias. She asked me my name and then before going on air asked me why I liked Sarah Palin, I repeated what I told the NYT reporter. Norah didn’t seem to like that much.
So what did she do? I mean she couldn’t ask me that question on television, heaven forbid her not have a biting response.. I noticed her look down at my shirt then, she turned around blackberry in hand spoke to a man, thumbs tapping the blackberry (I don’t remember if she called or not, she may have. But she was on her blackberry), then jotted down a quick note. Little did I know that note would be used against me. She told us she’d be walking up to us. You know like she just stumbled upon us. The shot began… I kept telling myself answer her question well, don’t freak out. Well, I thought she’d ask me the same question. She asked the man beside me (who by the way is NOT my dad) the same question she had before we went on air. Myself on the other hand, not the same story. She had me read my shirt and then proceeded to ask me “Did you know Sarah Palin supported the bailout” to be 100% honest I was like, are you kidding me? She is trying to use my shirt against me. I was so shocked by the craftiness she had that I was truly stumped. I asked her where she got her fact and she read her little note. Then she asked me what I liked about Sarah, and I talked about the Constitution.
The fact that O'Donnell found it necessary to deceive a teenager in order to make herself look smart is truly pathetic. Unfortunately for O'Donnell, it didn't quite work out like she planned. The fact that Seal more than held her own in the encounter is remarkable. After the cartoonish ambush by O'Donnell, Miss Seal thought of a few more things she could have said:
Immediately after the interview I said to my dad “Oh man, I have so many great responses now about my shirt” I could have said, well my shirt doesn’t say anything about Sarah Palin supporting the bailout or “Hey Norah, have you read the book? She talks about how during her debate prep she was handed a list of note cards that had questions and ‘non-answers’” Of course they told Sarah Palin to support everything McCain did. Call me crazy but it would have looked pretty bad had Sarah Palin been against something John McCain was against while they were running together. Norah also claims I told her I voted (on her twitter). That is not true. She never asked my age or if I voted. I’m 17. I couldn’t have voted…and I don’t live in an ACORN district so I didn’t have a chance to even register illegally. Making that statement by Norah completely false.
The ACORN line is priceless. Miss Seal finished her post with the following:
In one day I met a role model, and met the liberal media and their crafty schemes. I fell prey to liberal bias, but I’d like to think I did an okay job. We always want do-overs, and I can assure you if I had a do-over with Miss O’Donnell you’d see a much more prepared (well rested) and ready to go at it side of this 17 year old. But unlike Norah I didnt have my note cards with me. I was forced to think on the spot and answer a gotcha question. Her goal was clear, make this teenager look like an uneducated Palin supporting buffoon. To liberals, and the 5 people who watch MSNBC she succeeded. To conservatives, she was the only buffoon during that interview.
I think it's fair to say that she did more than just an "okay job". Read Seal's entire post here. It looks like we have another aspiring barracuda on the horizon, this time in western Michigan.
Update by Doug: In addition to constitutional issues, my guess is that Jackie Seal could give Ms. O'Donnell a few lessons on geography as well.

Note to Norah: Don't mess with Ordinary Barbarians. We have these little things called facts on our side, and we aren't afraid to use them!
I put a bunch of links in the earlier Going Rogue Tour for today's event in Cincy. I did not know where to put them-so feel free to move them!
Nicely done Doug!
Incidentally, Robert Costa at NRO has a post up on this too with some interesting tweets from O'Donnell on this matter. Take a look.

The young woman in this video did an outstanding job, considering the circumstances.
There were reporters from the major networks going through and interviewing a lot of people, including me. Someone from CNN asked me a few questions, and I answered to the best of my ability. One can get really nervous with those cameras around, and I think both respondents in this video were terrific.
Jackie Seal will feel at home on this site. Her snarky ACORN remark was a jewel. Nancy should be proud. :)
Hey O'Norah...I know a pre-school you can interview...Bring your Note Cards!
Jim Treacher just posted this at Hot Air regarding O'Donnell:
"Norah O’Donnell won another argument with someone in line, but stopped short of kicking over his stroller.

O/T ... I wanted to share my take on Geraldine Ferraro's strange comments last night. Re-posted from what I wrote on Hillbuzz:
Geraldine Ferraro was on Greta last night and reported that Sarah sent her a signed copy of Going Rogue via Fed Ex, with the inscription:
“Geri, you’re an inspiration!”
Geri said she was very touched by this gesture, as well as being mentioned in the text of the book as well, but then went on into strange objections she had.
1. She said Palin shouldn’t have gone after the campaign staffers because it made her look vindictive. (Geri herself said she was angry with her VP staffers, but opted not to call them out in her book). Greta said Sarah was just setting the record straight.
2. She claims (with very flimsy reasoning) that Palin is going to alienate her base with some of the material in the book that shockingly reveals:
– Sarah supports Title IX and credits it with helping her have more opportunities (Geri says conservatives are against Title IX)
– Sarah has ambiguous positions on creationism and evolution (in other words, she doesn’t tow what Geri called the conservative-party line on creationism).
Apparently, Geri has never met a conservative who believed in science. Shocking.
Greta tried to point out to Geri that people love Sarah because she isn’t beholden to strict party positions, and has her own mind and principles. Isn’t that what Going Rogue is all about?
I really couldn’t figure out where Geri was coming from until I came up with this:
– Geri is a liberal who actually read Sarah’s book with an open mind and found areas where Sarah has great potential to win over independents. Geri knows Sarah is not the caricature of a rightwing religious loon she’s portrayed to be. This makes Sarah a more attractive candidate.
I’m wondering if Geri is trying to gin up concern about Sarah’s conservative bonafides to undermine her political future in the GOP? Is she really afraid of Sarah?
She says conservatives are not going to be happy with Sarah’s positions on a few things. Speaking as a moderate-conservative I can only say that I admire Sarah for being a real person and honestly her views match my own.

Check this out from Jammiewearingfool!! Good research, Jammie!!!
"Since the AP has 11 fact checkers to pore over Sarah Palin's book, I figured I could be one fact checker looking into the allegations about angry protestors at her book signing in Noblesville, IN.
The liberal bloggers are going crazy over a video that purports to show a crowd angry because they couldn't get their books signed at an event in Noblesville. So I did some research and this is what I came up with.
Unlike the liberal bloggers who are claiming she was only there for thirty minutes and then wisked off, in fact she was there from 5:30 PM until 9:00 PM
Palin stepped off her tour bus, holding her youngest son, Trig, just after 5:30 p.m. at the Borders store at Hamilton Town Center, 6News' Rick Hightower reported.
----------------snip---------------------------
The store handed out 1,000 wristbands for Thursday night's book signing, which wrapped up just before 9 p.m. Those who got to meet a woman they consider an idol walked away happy.
In the local media report they include the comments of a Teresa Hedricks, which was critical of the way things went. Well I did find a Teresa Hedricks of IN on Twitter, @cfmommie11 and lo and behold she is currently following 91 people. 89 of them are Hollywood celebrities, One for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the only political person on her follower list is, Barack Obama.
"I'm very disappointed. I think it was very rude. She could have at least apologized, and she didn't even do that," said Teresa Hedrick.
Surprise.
The last thing you might find odd in the video is that while they talk about an angry mob, and cite numbers of up to 300 people who didn't get their book signed once again the local reporter says it was a few dozen.
But not everyone went away happy. Several dozen people who had wristbands were turned away."
When I saw this yesterday I knew without a doubt... we are accomplishing with Sarah, what Reagan did... telling opposing forces straight up...We Win! --You loose!... and build the weapons to prove It.
It's Bull Crap!... Backassword!...You Betcha!... not only No!, but Hell No!
Hopefully we can get a press release from Ms Stapleton regarding Governor Palin's thoughts on this incident and release it to FoxNews before the BOR interview tonight. If not before BOR, make sure to have it by Hannity or Greta.
I also hope the Govenor makes a statement about this live when she sits down with either Greta or Gretchen from Fox and Friends next week.
For all the credit, that Sarah has given Ferraro, I think there's a degree of jealousy there. No one had a Democrats for Ferraro effort, a GerryPac, a best selling book. It's mean, petty, but it's human nature sadly
Thanks for posting this. I read her blog earlier and was really impressed. A young woman with a massive amount of potential and common sense? You betcha!
I finished reading Sarah's book. I loved loved loved it. To sum up my thoughts as I closed it, this woman has a clear vision. It's clear because she has turned her life over to the truest source of light, God. It's clear because God, family and country are her priorities. To have a clear vision doesn't mean that you see the final destination of the twisty turny road of life. Rather it means you see the next steps laid out in front of you. With courage of conviction Sarah Palin is walking, sometimes running, that path. Wherever it goes I trust that she will do the right thing. She inspires me to do the same. God bless her and her family and this awesome C4P community.
She tweets now that she is coming across some disgusting comments. We need to support her.
Sarah responded to this on her FB. Evidently there truly was some disappointed people, but she seems to be correcting the situation. Good for her. She has to stay ahead of them.
Sarah 2012
I bet this young woman's parents are so proud! I know I would be. Good for her.
MSNBC is sad. MSNBC is pathetic.

From O'Donnell's Twitter account:

Hey want to respond re lies out there ...

1) Palin fan was not 13. She'd voted in 2008

2) The man was not her father ....

3) I walked the line and asked who wanted to talk on camera. They volunteered.

A bit later, O'Donnell tweeted this gem:

hey didn't u go to fetch me some coffee? RT @mariamenounos @NorahODonnell so many haters...so little time.haha

Indeed, Norah. So many haters, so little time.

SCAG! Man I can't stand these people.

Educate yourselves. The paid DNC hacks that are acting like whiny bitches for NBC cameras in Noblesville, IN are known as "concern trolls" http://tinyurl.com/yhmjf8q http://tinyurl.com/lystfn
They're not real.

Doesn't Jane Austin live in Michigan????? Hmmmmmmmmm? I wonder??????????
Nice to hear from you.. :)
Surprise surprise, the person who is supposedly SO pissed off about not getting her book signed is an OBAMA SUPPORTER..well good golly miss molly what a shock
Maybe???
Well Gov. Palin will need to address her position on Title IX more clearly. I know many conservatives have been asking for reforms. Here is an article I found discussing such concerns back in 2004:
http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/pearson200411170828.asp
I can see Huckabee and Romney using that aginst Sarah. Maybe that is Ferara concern.
As for as Palin position on Evolution, she has always maintained that she does not believe in macro evolution but micro evolution does occur as evidenced by science and nature.
That is good Sarah posted on FB regarding this but I still wonder how true it all is.
Also, I am not sure what people expect. Some guy on FB was complaining about the Columbus book signing being cut from 1000 bands to 500. Good grief. What do these whiners expect from Sarah. A thousand books? Five hundred books? Just how many books do you think she can sign?
Get up early and camp out to be up closer in line. I am not sure what they expect. If you are going to the SuperBowl there are a certain number of tickets. Once they are sold, that is all there is. Same here. Once the set number of bands are handed out, that is it. What is she suppose to do?
O/T
Did anyone catch the back flap of the cover jacket where they credited "Joan Keatley" as the front cover photographer? It's supposed to be "John Keatley", isn't it?
I just twittered to Norah, I think if she reads what I wrote it is gonna make her cry LOL
The book signing in Plano is sold out!
O/T re: book

I wonder if Palin would describe her view as believing in Intelligent Design ... ???
NICE!! Ya know they are selling wristbands on ebay for 250 bucks..thats crazy
Lipstick,
I had that some thought!
Isn't intelligent design the same as creationism? Just different words usuage. She believes God created man not than man evolved from other species (macro Evolution) But she does accept some species evolve on the micro level as a result of mutations, natural selection, etc. I agree with her.

I have only read about 50 pages... and having read your thoughts... I can already agree 100% with you... Clear Vision--Courage of Conviction, thats her inner core!
I think what Geri is laughably trying to warn us:
"Caution conservatives, Palin is a feminist who believes in science."
I say, good for Palin! She's reinventing the conservative movement with a distinctively feminine and 21st century flavor.
I've never fully understood why Sarah loves Title 9 ... how did that help her pay for college? She wasn't on athletic scholarship, right? Is she referring to high school?

Yep high school. I heard talking about it last year but not sure if I can find that audio.
Toki! Where have you been? I've seen you on Twitter but nowhere else.
Geri just seems like a bitter and angry person, not much different that ao many liberals. She knows that Palin poses a big threat to the reelection of 0bama, so she's trying to steer people towards Huckabee.
wow off by 1 letter..who cares
The response on this book tour has been overwhelming. We are truly humbled, and I thank you.
I've been told that yesterday there were supporters in Noblesville who stood in long lines for hours in the cold and rain, and the book signing event ended without a chance to say hello to everyone who showed up. I am so sorry. We are working on a solution for those who were left behind.
I apologize.

The biggest beef people have with title IX is that it undermines boy's sports. The way I understand it, schools have to fund boys sports and girls sports equally. So if you have a situation where 75% of the boys want to play sports and only 25% of girls want to play sports, the boys sports are undermined because they receive less funding per participant, even though boys sports generally bring in more revenue from ticket sales.
With that said, it could probably be modified to correct this problem while still giving girls opportunities to play. After all, the that's the purpose of high school sports.
I found this explanation from NRO:
Saturday, September 13, 2008
Palin and Title IX [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
She has said things in support of it. I'd be willing to bet money — and I bet liberal feminists who have been having a ball with Title IX would too — she's not talking about what its wrought — the quotas, the killed opportunities for guys. She's said
"I had a great upbringing under Title IX," Palin told Alaska Business Monthly shortly after becoming governor in late 2006. "I can't imagine where I'd be without the opportunities provided to me in sports. Sports taught me that gender isn't an issue; in fact, when people talk about me being the first female governor, I'm a little absent from that discussion, because I've never thought of gender as an issue. In sports, you learn self-discipline, healthy competition, to be gracious in victory and defeat, and the importance of being part of a team and understanding what part you play on that team. You all work together to reach a goal, and I think all of those factors come into play in my role as governor."
Nothing there to disagree with. Title IX had a good intention. It's what feminists have done with it that's bad.
Take a look at the line in Ohio today...incredible.

I cannot tolerate even listening to Geri's bitterness/out of touch analysis. Sarah is sure killing her with kindness and hey I totally LOVE that:)
What a contrast. President Obama apologizes for America. Governor Palin apologizes to Americans for a situation largely outside of her control. Very classy.
exactly. I bet SOME of the people were leftist plants anyway. But Sarah puts the best foot forward. Well Done.
GA ... I think you're right. The Liberals for Huckabee movement is on. They will try to drive a wedge between Palin and social conservatives while foisting Huckabee on us just because they know he would lose in the general. Not.Going.To.Work.
I'll keep my out for Norah at the Fairfax, VA book signing next month. Remember, she was the one who lied about Sarah Palin calling Obama a terrorist.
Hey one letter is a big deal. That photographer took a great shot and deserved accurate credit for it. They didn't even get his gender right. I hope HC can correct that pronto. I am in journalism, and I remember one time while I was the editor of a community weekly we accidentally left a photographer's name off a front page photo. We felt awful. Her friends and roommates went around her apartment complex writing her name below the photo on the papers that had been delivered.
Trust me, with the low pay of journalism, you LIVE for the byline.
With that said, why does Geraldine Feraro care what social conservatives think about title 9?
I think we're gonna see more Huck Luv from the Left. They'll build up Huck for Iowa, and then Mitt for N.H. to totally block Sarah out. Ha!
I'm not suprised! When I picked up my tickets there earlier this week they had already sold 400 tickets out of 1,000 in the first 3 hrs. I'm going to have an early morning on Dec 4!
That's what I was thinking, too, Recovering Democrat. It may not be a big deal to everyone else, but the poor guy who had this one big assignment of his career and they got his name wrong. It wouldn't be so bad if they had spelled it "Jon" instead of "John", but they got the gender wrong! Hopefully they'll correct it in the second printing.
Norah O'Donnell clearly looked pissed. Did you see her face when she pointed at the man's PALIN shirt? And the way she quickly moved the mic away from him after she's done. Normally reporters would go down the line and smile along with the excited folks, but Norah was clearly annoyed. That girl did an extremely good job considering the circumstances. Can't believe Norah would pick on a young girl.
Ask Norah, "And why do you hate Sarah so much?" And if she denies it say, "The anger is written all over your face. Or do you always look bitter like that?" Haha. =)
I have also heard that some pro-life group that Huckabee used to attack Romney is now starting to attack Gov. Palin.
GAHanson,
You all gotta start thinking BEFORE putting stuff like this out. Check out how it's being billed, and not without justification: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXKuDYvM6Wk Title: "MSNBC Interviews Clueless Sarah Palin Supporters At Book Signing". With all due respect to the young lady, she ought to have known the truth on that.
With more championing like that, we won't need people to run Palin down.
