Palin, Dobbs and Rand

Neither Palin nor Dobbs has any type of political future—the former because of her ignorance and thin skin, the latter because of his bigot’s baggage. But if you surround Dobbs’ brain with Palin’s sensual warmth, add Beck’s acting skills, top it all off with the moderate-seeming polish of a Mitt Romney, and then throw in a dash of the new Newt Gingrich’s “ideas” and “skepticism” and “detachment,” you’ll have something like the populist Frankenstein that will, tragically, come to dominate American politics. –Lee Siegel, The Daily Beast, “A Populist Frankenstein” h/t HotAir

Did Lee Siegel really compare the political futures of Sarah Palin and Lou Dobbs? Don’t know if you caught that, ladies, but he pointed out Palin’s sensuality and Dobbs’s brain. Welcome to The Liberal Enlightenment, America 2009 Edition. With the sensitivity of Eric Cartman and the political sensibilities of Archie Bunker, Siegel has foretold the future of Liberalism. With foes like Siegel, who needs friends?

I’ll give Siegel credit – he actually manages to give Ayn Rand a sliver of her due, and he warns Liberals to ignore her at their peril. He is eerily accurate in his phrasing, although wildly off the mark regarding his, um, mark, while covering his contempt for women only slightly better than Pres. Obama. Early in the piece cited above, he writes:

This is too bad, because if you can’t understand the popularity of Ayn Rand, you are never going to understand either the popularity of Lou Dobbs, or what seem to be Dobbs’ outsized political ambitions.

This is fascinating. Co-opting Siegel’s sentence structure and happily perverting it, I would state that if you can’t understand the popularity of Sarah Palin, you are never going to understand the grassroots reaction to what is happening in America, 2009.

Siegel is haphazardly using Ayn Rand as an exotic gateway drug to begin understanding the allure of Sarah Palin. Unlike Rand, Palin isn’t so … off-putting.

Before continuing, say what you will of Gov. Palin’s politics, but how drunk does one have to be to declare that Gov. Palin has no political future? I know there’s a Liberal bias in the media, but when the good ship MSNBC is sending out their microphoned hitgals to sleepy Midwestern towns in the dead of night to interrogate teenagers supporting a politician MSNBC keeps reminding us is irrelevant, methinks said figure might have a future.

Oh, and that thin-skinned canard? Let us put aside for a second that while Pres. Obama coolly said family should be off-limits while watching the press devour Gov. Palin’s offspring whole, it wasn’t Gov. Palin who convened a joint session of Congress to refute something Obama said about her plan for health care, on Facebook no less.

Which brings me to this: Do you, Palinphobe, really want the only well-known national political figure who’s demonstrated she’s unafraid to bring a chainsaw to a knife fight regarding The One going toe-to-toe against him? Not since Charles Bronson was rockin’ like Dokken have I so looked forward to witnessing the practical results of a death wish.

Siegel’s piece offers up more insight about the enduring popularity of Rand than I thought possible for a Liberal to admit. Yet, Liberals show their cards when they’re not even aware they’re holding them. Consider Siegel’s contrast of Beck, Dobbs and Gov. Palin with Pres. Obama:

Even Obama’s eloquence is no match for their breathtakingly expressive one-dimensionality.

Do Liberals still not realize, off-prompter, Pres. Obama is about as eloquent as Porky Pig absent the social graces? As for dimensions, the only dimension Pres. Obama has shown in public is Me, if “Me” is in fact a dimension. When I think of monodimensionality, I think of the wonderful edit of Obama-at-UN, where he shakes the hand of 160 leaders and his posture and smile never change. He may not be a one-dimensional cardboard cutout, but he certainly does well playing one on the talking picture box.

As a resident Ayn Rand dork here at C4P, I have no problem admitting that I occupy that strange political ground where I’m both a supporter of Gov. Palin while being heavily influenced by Rand. Rand certainly would have disliked Sarah Palin for many reasons, among them being one of the reasons she disliked Bill Buckley and dismissed Fred Nietzsche. As she famously told him the first time they met, “You’re much too intelligent to believe in God!” Like Nietzsche and a host of others, Rand would have dismissed Gov. Palin as a mystic, and like Niestzsche, Gov. Palin’s reputation would not be harmed.

What Rand and Gov. Palin share – there’s six words you probably weren’t expecting to see spackled together – is that both tap into a well of unabashed American goodwill. Bluntly, Rand’s enduring influence and Palin’s continued grasp on the American imagination (and Liberal mystification of both women’s popularity) spring from the fact that no matter how much you call a person and those who admire them stupid, some messages are beyond vituperation.

Both express values shared by most Americans: through hard work, grit, and determination, you can become whatever you want. Ayn Rand, an immigrant who spoke limited English upon arrival to our shores, did it by writing two of the most popular and influential American novels of the twentieth century. Sarah Palin, a politically unconnected wife and mother, did it first by going door-to-door campaigning for city council and, well, you know the rest. Both women enjoy spectacular success, but many Americans – myself included – enjoy the same: hard work reaps benefits.

I’d like to think that Ayn Rand would chuckle that a woman like Gov. Palin is burning up the book charts while causing hissy fits among Libs like Siegel, trying to figure out whether or not she should be promoted or destroyed, all in the name of political gain. As an anti-mystic absolutist, Rand would never have admired a woman like Gov. Palin, but just for the fact that she pisses off all the right people, she might have secretly liked her. I have no need to reconcile my admiration for both women, I take my solace in this simple fact: Rand and Palin, like Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney, infuriate all the right people, and for that I am in their debt.

Three years ago Lee Siegel was exposed for using a "sock pocket" to respond to criticisms of his New Republic columns: http://www.boston.com/news/globe/ideas/articles/2006/09/10/we_see_you_lee_we_see_you/

In another words, a total cultural phony. He is a creep, but creepiness gets you attention among liberals. His dismissiveness of Governor Palin ("her ignorance"!) is wishful thinking. He writes for a dozen magazines, but underneath is jealous of all the attention she gets. The libs who write for The Daily Beast are like the kids in high school who sat around making fun of all the successful people.

C. Brooks Kurtz,

Brilliant! A terrific read

wisetrog,  November 28, 2009 10:34 AM

And I thought I was the resident Rand expert here! Mr. Kurtz, I especially liked your column about Rand, Palin and democratic populism although I couldn't comment on it at the time.

Kjanlady,  November 28, 2009 10:36 AM

Liberals cohabitate with that green monster of jealousy.  Do you think it sustains itself by dining on liberal brains....goes a long way to explain their cluelessness.......it must begin it's feast on that part of the brain that is dedicated to self control...that would explain why they are perpetually angry...wow!...I think I've just uncovered the secret to Chris Matthews......and Al Gore......and.....think I'll get a Nobel Prize?

ladydawnelle,  November 28, 2009 10:41 AM

I just had to MAKE known to an X Hillary supporter that Sarah is NOT "some Christian Far Right Extremist"

I hate how that combination of words always falls together out of the mouths of liberal lemmings.  Soo many have swallowed the mantra.  I used to believe it.  It was easier than thinking they were all lying to me and I didn't want to do the HOMEWORK perhaps required to find them wrong.  After a time it became obvious that not EVERYONE was an extremist on the other side.  It was all just a mantra.  Real tired of them from both sides.  anyway, good morning good Palin Fans!

ladydawnelle,  November 28, 2009 10:43 AM

what I mean is I'm tired of people thinking you can't be a Christian with OUT being an extremist!!!!  Have MERCY!!!  ARGH!  grrrrrr!  ;-)  ya know?  Man, that just gets me.

techno,  November 28, 2009 10:47 AM

What I have noticed from many pundits is that they think that just anybody can be a politician 'asking for votes', just like when Jimmy Johnson wins all those NASCAR races, anybody can drive a car.

Folks, being a politician is not as easy as you think. Take Rush Limbaugh. He fully admits he would be a prime example of the Peter Principle if he ever ran for office. And so would many others.

Look, i'm not putting down Dobbs, Beck or anybody that wants to run for office but I am a strong believer in the Peter Principle-many of the folks you see on TV now would flop as politicians, but conversely many former politicians who want to become media darlings would fall on their face as well.

IMHO, Sarah Palin doesn't have anything to worry about in respect to Lou Dobbs or Glenn Beck.

ladydawnelle,  November 28, 2009 11:00 AM

I concur.

ladydawnelle,  November 28, 2009 11:05 AM

oh my gosh I just realized something else about Independents and why I have twice gone BACK to my roots.

WE (and I can say this for sure) WE Indies HATE having anytihng crammed down our throats from someone's religion to someones social agenda!  Sarah is smartly and probably by nature NOT doing this so this is why Indies are now drawn to her.  She's NOT threatening that way.  Those that have watched her at ALL know this!!!  Give her time and by 2012 she will be everyone's darling!  jmo.  (well 75 percent of us)

ladydawnelle,  November 28, 2009 11:06 AM

pardon my morning typoneese!

Firelight,  November 28, 2009 11:28 AM

That is exactly right!!  As an Indie, I don't want to be preached to.  I have my strong beliefs but I also respect others too.  You are exactly right in saying that we don't want someone's beliefs, religion or social agenda to be shoved down our throat!!

That is one reason I LOVE Sarah.  She makes statements where she says HER beliefs, HER Values, she is prolife ect....  but you never hear her say that we must all believe the same or that she is going to legislate morality.

I like a leader having strong personal beliefs as long as they understand that others may no hold the same and that they lead all, not just their like minded.

Nancy,  November 28, 2009 11:30 AM

"her ignorance and thin skin", that is such liberal projection.
Her "ignorance" culminated in negotiating the largest private sector energy project in North American history. Ya know what President Obama would have done, bowed to both parties, received an honorary something and declared himself tired from all of his hardwork, but not so tired that he couldn't reiterate how awesome he is.

Her "thin skin", resulted in her having a clue about being Alinskyed, and getting out of the shackles of the frivolous complaints and going rogue right up the Obama administration's a#%. President Obama would have strapped on a pair of Depends, called for a prime time news conference and blamed everything going wrong on Bush, and taking an hour and a half to do it.

Nancy,  November 28, 2009 11:33 AM

Maybe it's just me, but I don't get sensual warmth from Governor Palin.
I get sarcastic, kick butt, mommy from her.
Any thoughts?:)

Bill in Baltimore,  November 28, 2009 11:37 AM

Nancy, I can't comment.

Right now Sarah IS the A-Team.  Beck and Dobbs may(?) be on the C and D Teams.

Neo,  November 28, 2009 11:58 AM

I spent about 15 minutes Thursday morning within 15 feet of her - At times it was 5 feet.  Sensual?  She could be if she wanted; but she is NOT when in public.  Pretty, well grommed and fit?  You bet.

PEC,  November 28, 2009 12:09 PM

Was Obama not ignorant on Afghanistan.  He clearly did not know what to do for 10 months.

NEWSFLASH: Siegel, the one who calls Pallin thin-skinned, was temporarily suspended from his job at the New Republic, for assuming a flase internet identity and posting favorable comments on his articles at the magazine's website.

Irony?

http://nymag.com/arts/books/features/42758/

You should post this as an UPDATE in the original post. It sheds revealing light into the hypocrtical Siegel, who felt the need to defend himself, and even praises "mixing it up" and fighting back against negativity, but calls Palin "thin skinned."

Great job, C.B.!

JohnDoeAt30Below,  November 28, 2009 1:33 PM

Neo, I've known Sarah and Todd for years - she is pretty in a 'nice lady/loan officer/professional' way but she doesn't make you go wobbly and think of wild nights. On the other hand, even tho I am a very heterosexual male, I can tell you that Todd is VERY attractive and seems to look better all the time. If anything, he has lost weight in the last few years and is very fit.

i'd like to be a fly on the wall if Letterman ever met Todd in a quiet room. It would get a lot more quiet.

Nancy,  November 28, 2009 1:34 PM

ladydawnelle,  November 28, 2009 2:18 PM

OH Todd is da bomb!  (and I've never met him)  He's Cary Grant, Richard Burton & Hawkeye Pierce wrapped up in one!

The 2 of them together are just GORGEOUS but the fact they are GOOD, WISE, COMPETENT PEOPLE makes them even more special.  I am in awe of the fact they are still together.  IN this me,me,me world thank GOD they were raised in Alaska is all I can say.  These are the people I want to govern my great country!  People that are BETTER than me. MOre qualified than me.  And have more stamina than me!!  The Palins fit the bill.  Easily!  They get my vote.

Steven,  November 28, 2009 2:21 PM

To all, interesting article in Politico on maybe the biggest speech Palin will give since her RNC address. That speech is the keynote address at the Tea Party national convention. This is a real movement that will be brought mainstream by Sarah. What was laughed at by the media and the elite is now looked at in the context of the 2010 election as a true grassroot movement that can groundswell into a major force to upend the current political establishment. I think C4P's great commentators should really think about what Palin will say next year because I cannot emphasize enough the importance of this address. It will get massive media attention and it will either mainstream the Tea Party movement with Sarah at the head of it or the media will try to consign Palin along with the Tea Party movement to the fringe of American politics and make her utterly unelectable in the future. The link to the article is below.

Neo,  November 28, 2009 2:26 PM

In about 5 minutes I'll be leaving home to attend a 'private' (30 - 40 people) event with Sarah.  Her Uncle Ron attends our TEA Party organizing meetings.  He called me Tue. morning and asked if I would like to meet Sarah while she is in the Tri-Cities.  If I have the chance I plan on asking her to do a minute of so video giving a shout-out to C4P and all those that comment here.  At a minimum I should have photos sent to the editors here by 4:00pm PST today.

C.B. Kurtz, thanks as usual

Im kinda slow, don't pretend to delve deeply into politics for fear of drowning... but with that said!... my pea brain has and is instinctively telling me that I may not be so stupid after all... because I perfectly understand Sarah, have from day one when I was fortunate to see her introduced in OHIO!... and I instinctively have know ever since, that those attacking her with their so called educated intellectual prowess are left and right nut jobs!... I used to listen to many of them... left and right... and think they were OK in their own leaning ways but not moved either way with a sense of purpose... they all seemed alike!

Brother did that ever change!... and we all know why!   If those nut jobs (remember left and right)!, want to keep looking into their mirror every morning... patting themselves on the back and saying Im still relevant... let them die a thousand deaths doing so. It seems to my pea brain that is exactly what they do every time they open their mouths.

Will!... till the day I die!... never go back to willfully accepting what I did before... Sarah has set a NEW standard... SAT of politics if you will... only those meeting or exceeding need apply... no exceptions!... especially those legacy ones.

Bestbud,  November 28, 2009 3:05 PM

I've made the comparison and Techno has seconded it, to Dagny Taggart, in her directness, her reigning philosophy, and the sense of poise that she brings, Now there are differences, socially Dagny is more Angelina Jolie, but the esssential characteristics are the same

For an 'anti-mystic' Ayn Rand comes off as quite the fortune-teller as we watch the premise of "Atlas Shrugged" play out before our very eyes..... You would think the Ommmmmbaba administration has taken their entire agenda from that novel, apparently trying to implement virtually everything she warned was a baaaaad idea.......
