The Palin/Clinton consensus: Israeli settlements
As part of our preparations for the much talked about 'Coffee Summit' (date and venue as yet unknown), we're starting a new series called 'The Palin/Clinton consensus'. The first episode deals with one of the key chapters of the Israeli/Palestinian negotiations: what to do about Israeli settlements in the Westbank and East Jerusalem? Palestinians have made the freezing of all building activities in the settlements a precondition for further talks. Israel rejects this demand and argues that there should be a distinction between the building of new settlements and the 'natural growth' of existing, thriving settler communities. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu explained his country’s position during an Israeli cabinet meeting in May of this year: "We do not intend to build any new settlements, but it wouldn't be fair to ban construction to meet the needs of natural growth or for there to be an outright construction ban,"
In her interview with Barbara Walters, Gov. Palin was asked about the Obama administration's position on this issue:
"I disagree with the Obama administration on that," Palin told Walters. "I believe that the Jewish settlements should be allowed to be expanded upon, because that population of Israel is, is going to grow. More and more Jewish people will be flocking to Israel in the days and weeks and months ahead. And I don't think that the Obama administration has any right to tell Israel that the Jewish settlements cannot expand."
A total freeze on all settlement building activity is certainly Obama's aim. He repeatedly stated during last year's campaign that he considered the settlements themselves (not their expansion, mind you: the settlements themselves) unhelpful. Once elected, he quickly made a total freeze on all building activities in the settlements one of his key demands of the Israeli government (his key demand of the Palestinian leadership was that they stop frowning during photo ops). He reaffirmed his commitment to that position again as recently as today in an interview with Fox News in which he criticized the Israeli government’s decision to build 900 new housing units in existing Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem. He warned that this decision could "embitter the Palestinians in a way that could end up being very dangerous." In other words: give the Palestinians what they want or they'll start another terror campaign.
Interestingly enough, his own Secretary of State doesn't seem to agree with him. Her position is in fact virtually identical to the one outlined by Gov. Palin this week. During a recent visit to the region, Secretary Clinton expressed her outspoken support for the Israeli approach, suggesting Palestinian demands for a halt to all building activity were themselves an "unreasonable obstacle" on the road to a final peace agreement. She even went out of her way to praise Prime Minister Netanyahu for making "unprecedented concessions" on this issue.
Israeli settlement policy: one issue on which Gov. Palin and Secretary Clinton clearly see eye to eye.

I wonder if Sarah will do an interview with Bret Baier. That will provide some gravitas for sure.
Obama has NO business telling Israel to do anything with their land.
Israel belongs to the Jewish people NOT to the Palestinians, NEVER has NEVER will.
Nobody messes with God's children.
The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the LORD who had appeared to him.
Genesis 12:7
For all the land which you see, to you will I give it, and to your seed for ever.
Genesis 13:16
I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
Genesis 17:7
You have to wonder if Hillary doesn't just sit back and smile while Dr. Utopia self-destructs. Seriously, does he not realize why Israel is an ally? They're an ally because they are a stable democracy that doesn't advocating wiping their enemies off the map.
The same Bret Baier who made the false fact check on Palin blaming the Obama administration for putting "In God we Trust" on the side of the $1 coin?
I see the politics in seeing Palin and Hillary some how meeting and Hillary emerging with a positive view of the governor. But let us not go too far to see these two meet eye to eye. You won't find two figures in politics further apart on all the issues as these two are.
The same Bret Baier, who in trying to promote Palin's book, put up the Going Rouge liberal book cover?
Chris Wallace would be the better interviewer.
Ahmen Steven.
The ONLY thing these two women would agree on would probably be how they were both treated by the msm.
I am one of those skeptics who has never been a fan of SOS Hillary Clinton (Entitlement attitude, HillaryCare, Kosovo bombing lie whopper, Whitewater, Lewinsky matter, Vince Foster, etc, etc, etc), so this "Coffee Summit" is one of the few decisions the Governor has made lately that I just disagree with and cannot get passed.
That said, if Governor Palin can convince Clinton that the KSM trial in NYC was the worst decision made to date by the Obama Administration, I will respect Clinton a bit more and the "Coffee Summit" will be worth it. Unfortunately, Clinton has already gone on record and defended Eric Holder's decision last week.
I haven't seen Clinton leak anything against the Obama Adminstration of late, so my guess is she has agreed with every single policy decison to date.
My other question is the MSM spin on Clinton lately. She has made a lot of foreign policy errors that are not questioned by the MSM. If this was Governor Palin, she would be creamed and made to look like an incompentent fool. The whole promotion that Clinton is doing a wonderful job as SOS is a load of crap.
What on earth can Governor Palin gain from coffee with her?
rileypalin
Agree... what would Sarah gain?... I don't see It!
I hope Hillary quits this Mickey Mouse administration and runs for governor of New York. It is ridiculous how she has been marginalized as Sec. of State.
As for Israel, last time I checked they were a sovereign nation. They shouldn't need anyone else's OK to expand their own settlements, least of all their own supposed ally's. IMO they have already gone beyond what is necessary to accommodate the Palestinians; the Palestinians are just never satisfied. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile. If we're going to let fear of what they might do inform every action we and the Israeli's take, we may as well just concede to the terrorists right now.
Maybe Hillary knows that Obama will announce he will only serve for one term and no seek reelection in 2012. Impossible he is serious aboutvre-election with all the "back asswards" policies he is initiating. The dollar is tanking and he is on a spending binge.
OT: It is noon here in Anchorage, the UPS guy just came with the first 3 copies of 'Going Rouge' that I ordered from Amazon. Pretty fast service and there should be more tomorrow.
Along the line of Sarah and Hillary's coffee summit.
Think about this for 2012... Obama chooses not to run because of lost support or whatever... Hillary and Sarah would be the tickets!
I only say this to be thinking about the Women Vote!... Who would get It?... Who would have the better chance?
TONS to gain. Have the Coffee and follow with a presser with both present. Would not bad mouth each other and would woo more Hillary types. Pick your battles guys pick your battles.
2 of my FAVORITE WOMEN IN THE SAME SENTENCE!! LETS DO COFFEE!!!
THAT WOULD MAKE OBAMBI'S SWOLLEN HEAD SHRIVEL UP LIKE ........... ok I won't go there. like a prune? lol

<p>But when it comes to the 2012 race, Obama didn't discount the possibility he may sit out on a reelection bid.
</p><p>"You know, if - if I feel like I've made the very best decisions for the American people and three years from now I look at it and, you know, my poll numbers are in the tank and because we've gone through these wrenching changes, you know, politically, I'm in a tough spot, I'll - I'll feel all right about myself," Obama told CNN's Ed Henry during an interview in China.
</p></span>
Um, with all due respect, you're really not understanding Sarah's strategy here. First of all, I think she genuinely respects Hillary, just as she stated in her book, and mentioned on the campaign trail last year. Reaching out to Hillary accomplishes two important goals if you're looking at this politicially:
1) Compete for PUMA support
I spent last year on the Hillary Clinton Forum with the McCain Democrats (actually they were more Palin Democrats after 8/29/08). The PUMAs represent a big voting block of moderate Dems ... which Sarah obviously sees as up for grabs. She's currently in Michigan, a blue state that had many many Hillary supporters. We see how our friends at Hillbuzz continue to be some of the strongest defenders of Sarah. There IS a bi-partisan movement against government abuse, along with an anti-Obama backlash, and the PUMAs are part of it.
2) Compete for women's support
Say what you will about Hillary but she got as close to becoming president as any woman in U.S. history. Her candidacy inspired millions of women of all ages. Sarah and Hillary may be on opposite sides of the political spectrum, but they share a bond as women. Again, Sarah gains by being gracious to Hillary because women have never had a chance to vote for a woman for president in a general election. Sarah gave a great speech on women's rights in Henderson, NV last year. She is carrying on a feminist torch that started with Susan B. Anthony and other suffragettes, and yes, was also carried by Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary.
Just because we don't play identity politics like the left doesn't mean Sarah can't capitalize on her identity as an emerging feminine icon.
If the Palestinians didn't have someone to blame, what would they have?
If the Palestinians didn't have someone to blame, what would they have? They're like the ACORN of the Middle East.
HEY don't go dissing Hillary now she was VERY gracious about having coffee with Sarah.
They have a lot more in common than that. I would bet my last dollar!
In other words: If I bankrupt this country and Sarah Palin emerges as the presidential nominee for the GOP in 2012, I'll just slink back to Chicago rather than face her head on in what certainly would be a humiliating defeat ... But I'll feel good about myself. :-)
That's because he is clueless in the office. Obama is in way over his head. Has no clue how to govern only knows how to campaign. He doesn't want to get beat by a femalel - Sarah Palin
the wretched right better realize they have a VERY golden opportunity to keep the Hillary DEMs and INDIES they've acquired if they DON'T go generalizing and hating on Hillary especially ! I watched with my own two eyes as the RIGHT just kept right on keeping on when W went OFF the ranch on many issues!! I don't recall ONE Elephant standing up against any of the crap W dished out from FISA to stealing property to Iraq to Habeas and on and on! Obama is crap on a stick but (imo) so was W/chainsaw and so far not too many have DIED for bambi (not that it won't happen soon)
I hope you get my meaning here. It's all relative at this point. Stop the hate. Start moving forward! SArah (so far) is my answer. But (like Obama) the party she brings along with her will MATTER to me as to if I can stay loyal. If there's too much hate - I';m gone. Like many of us that are tired of it
(had to say it)
I'm actually very surprised he said that. First, I never thought he would ever consider NOT running for re-election. Now he thinks there might be a possibility that his poll number will tank. But maybe it's not so surprising, I have never thought he actually enjoys governing, he just wanted to win and make history. I even think his goal was to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Now he's got it. I think the actual job bores him.
Two things...
First of all, as a Conservative, to see other fellow "Conservatives" praising Hillary "Universal Healthcare" Clinton is rather disgusting. I'm sorry, but some of you dont seem to remember the Clinton years.
Secondly, about Israel. The last time I checked, its a Foreign Country. Not a State of America. So either Obama, or Gov.Palin shouldnt be even talking about it. But since it's being brought up, here's my take. Untill they stop getting billions of US taxpayer dollars (As a True Conservative, Foreign Aid is Un-Constitutional no matter the country) they need to listen to our Governments position. No Matter How Wrong It Is.
And if people keep putting Gov.Palin and Hillary together, its going to keep driving us Conservatives away. Just keep that in mind.
RD:
I respect your opinion, we just differ on Hillary Clinton is all.
I am one of those Governor Palin supporters who doesn't believe she needs to use identity politics to gain any support.
Her policy positions and principles of common sense conservatism should be enough to sway all voters - both men and women alike.
I would be curious to know how many Hillary supporters (PUMAS and the like) actually knew all of her policy positions on every issue (you I believe are in a minority) before they became a supporter, or were they a one position voter only - pro Abortion?
I believe Governor Palin can gain more women voters just by promoting herself and her common sense positions.
Her appearance in Wisconsin two weeks ago was very promising. Abortions are down in my state and more younger women are Pro Life than Pro Abortion. If she keeps making inroads with younger women on social issues and the Catholic Dems who are Pro Life, she wins that battle.
^^^^not policy wise...they couldn't be more polar opposites
My point exactly.
Governor Palin needs to develop her own base of women voters that set herself apart from Hillary Clinton.
The biggest issue is her Pro Life stance vs Hillary's Pro Abortion stance.
Stand on your principles and led the voters come to you. You don't try to sway a Pro Abortion woman voter to your side because women vote on emotion and if that is their most important issue, you lose.
The Dems have mastered the art of emotional voting.
Governor Palin doesn't need to play that game. Women are drawn to her just by who she is.
The polls show that more voters are Pro Life than Pro Abortion. Focus in on that when campaigning and she wins.
btw - about bambi not running again
when has he told the truth? tell me once?
I don't believe a word he says abouit ANY thing!
I made more money and lived better than EVER during the 90's
I didn't even vote for BILL but admit they were the BEST years for me ever!!
Ladydawnelle:
I hope you were not referring to me as a "wretched right" person because I consider myself to be very rational and common sense woman, not a far right radical. I just have a differing opinion of Hillary Clinton than you.
"Stop the hate"? I don't hate Hillary Clinton. I just don't agree with her policy positions. Big difference. I think she is a strong woman who presented herself quite well in her debates with Obama and actually won every debate to be honest. Her treatment by the press was bad, but keep in mind, Hillary Clinton also was the person who used the MSM to her advantage when her husband was the President. You do recall her appearing on The Today show and spoke of the "Right Wing Conspiracy" don't you? Hillary has had many transformations over the years and to be honest, I like this one the best now that she is SOS. She works hard in her position and I sense a calming to her. She is much more likable now than in previous years.
In answer to your question, I believe Governor Palin will bring along who she feels will be be able to promote her common sense agenda to better the US.
If you are questioning who she brings along with her, are you really that loyal to Governor Palin in the first place?
That's a good point.
My son (a plebe at West Point) wrote a paper on the media's treatment of women, and part of it was a comparison of Sarah's feminity versus Hillary's "I can be a man too" persona.
- chip off the old shoulder, ha ha
(sorry Hillary fans, I'm just sayin', plus my wife commented many times recently "boy, Hillary [or Bill] would be a lot better than what we've got now . . . )
and I agreed with her.
WHAT ????
This dweeb is throwing in the towell already ????
This needs to go viral !
no no not you of course not
I'm still reading a lot of hate of hillary everywhere I go
literally
not you
I didn't even get to read all yo usaid but had just come from another site where there were saying some nasty things.
ok example - of who they b ring
obamb brought Wright/Pfleger/Axelrove (that's what I'm talking about)
if Sarah was to bring some equivalent from the other side I won't name names just saying her crowd is as liable as she is............ they don't need to be as good as sarah (no one probably is) but they have to be fair & honest
now I'm thinking a SArah/Hillary ticket. ONLY SArah would be so brave. Can you imagine how SERIOUS heads would BLOW if she walked out on that stage to announce her running mate and said HILLARY CLINTON! lmao the far left and far right would BLOW!! (but there's only a small amount of loony left left and wretched right left so it wouldn't really matter! HA! just my dream
hey i just said that above before reading you
oo like minds lol love it
I made more money and live better in the 90's than at any time in my life
I miss those days badly
would go back in a second
Obama is waiting to be president of the new world order that will emerge after he destroys the USA. If he gets his way there won't be a 2012 presidential election only one to elect USA's delegates to the order..
Troll Alert! "Guest" -You will not succeed in causing a rift with former Hillary supporters on this site. If you are a true Sarah Palin supporter then you will show Hillary the same respect that Sarah does. I am a former Hillary supporter and a life long Dem who is now a Sarah Palinista! There are a number of us PUMAs who love Sarah. Sarah will need the support of Palin Dems and Independents just like Reagan had to win in 2010 and 2012.
OK, in a match-up between Hillary and Sarah, where will you stand? If Sarah is the GOP nominee and Hillary is the Dem nominee, what then? Can we count on the PUMAs for their vote for Sarah? Hill-Buzz guys have already said they will vote for Hillary. Identity politics is quick-sand. Very bad footing.
Yeah, I'm not saying Sarah would use traditional identity politics. but she has a chance to speak out on women's issues with an authentic perspective as a conservative woman.
Well, just remember people can change. I used to be pro-choice. Now I'm pro-life-choice :)
He's a total wimp.
Well, Guest, then maybe you should take this up with Governor Palin. She's the one who keeps praising Hillary. She's the one who suggested they sit down to coffee. Not anyone on this board. But if you think it's just us PUMAs or soft conservatives, you might recall that Ann Coulter herself praised Hillary last year and was prepared to campaign for her over McCain. So if Ann Coulter is driving conservatives away, then I guess your only alternative would be what -- Ron Paul?
RD:
In regards to Ann Coulter throwing her support to Hillary last year, I believe she was just trying to drive home a point that we elected a RINO as the Republican candidate and that was a mistake the party has not quite learned. We do not win elections when we elect RINO's, we win elections when we nominate Conservatives.
The day Ann Coulter would ever vote for Hillary Clinton over Governor Palin in a head-to-head matchup, I will walk all the way to the White House and kiss Obama's feet.
100% Agree! Great post!
