Patrick Hughes: Sarah Palin is a True Reagan Conservative

In a post on Wednesday, we discussed Representative Mark Kirk (RINO-IL), who has publicly appealed for Governor Palin's endorsement in his Republican primary campaign for the Illinois Senate seat being vacated by Roland Burris (D-IL) in 2010. Patrick Hughes, a businessman from Illinois, is challenging Kirk in the GOP Primary. In an interview with the Illinois Review, Hughes had this to say about Kirk's request for an endorsement from Governor Palin:

I believe Mark Kirk, who has consistently supported President Obama's legislative agenda, including cap and trade legislation, is quickly realizing that Republican Primary voters do not share his extreme views. In a desperate attempt to prove otherwise, he is seeking the endorsement of Sarah Palin, a true Reagan conservative, to help disguise his liberal voting record.

I read this statement earlier today from Hughes. The fact the he speaks well of Gov. Palin has made me take a good look at him for the Republican nominee for Illinois' Senate seat. He seems to be a fairly upstanding nominee.

I'm also, however, considering Eric Wallace, who choose to not submit his name for the Republican nomination. He is considering running as an independent, but has fairly strong conservative credentials.

I lived four blocks S. of BO for 4 years (he just hadn't moved in yet), and know about the Chicago machine.

Do NOT believe what ANY Illinois politician SAYS, but instead watch what are their political POSITIONS:  what do they DO and how do they VOTE?

This guy sounds like a tool of the machine, so I pray Sarah will NOT be fooled by ANY "nice" thing he says about her.

Sarah Palin will really, really have to show maximum restraint as she gets involved in these primary races. A lot of people who should know better want her to get involved in Crist/Rubio, for example.

That would be foolish; it would drive a lot of Crist's well heeled contributors right into the arms of Teh Mittens, many of whom might be considering financing a Palin insurgency against the Party but also think that Crist has done as good a job as any Florida governor could have been expected to have done in this environment.

Palin, I suspect, knows this, and has no intention of pushing some of the movers and shakers in the Florida State Senate (who think that Crist would be a better Senate candidate against the Democrat Not in the Race Right Now-it will NOT be Kendrick Meek-Axelrod and Nelson aren't that stupid, they will not pull a Katherine Harris with a Senate race) into the welcoming arms of Huck and Mitt by alienating the Crist camp. I know that evryone loves Marco, but the upside to her endorsement of Marco will be to piss off a lot of needed DC financing connections she needs to run a national campaign. Obama raised money by going to the fat cats. So will she. I get that most conservatives like Marco. I get that Marco is the future. I just don't think it's the smart play right now for Palin to come out and endorse him. Same with Hughes/Kirk (although that's a much closer call-the cap and tax thing makes Kirk almost radioactive). Do the book tour and see where things stand after that, imho.

Palin has to be smart. The Hoffman race was ready made for her. Dede Scozzafava was endorsed by Markos Moulitsas Zounigas of Daily Kos fame and ACORN's Working Families Party front group. They endorsed her over Owens because they knew she was to Owens' Left on the issues that mattered to them. Crist and King are nowhere near as bad as Scuzzy was. The point of NY-23 though was made: to get the NRSC and the NRCC out of the Primary Races and into neutrality.

If Palin should start throwing herself at these established Republicans and start losing races, she's gone as a national candidate. Period. She needs to stay out of races where there are primaries. Except, of course, Perry-Hutch, there's a personal vendetta going on here. Hutch's people were largely responsible for spreading a lot of the garbage about Palin that came out of the Hill last year, truth be told. Hutchinson never forgave JMC for not considering her for VP last year. The two people can't stand each other. Other than that, Palin should hold fire and let the bloggers campaign for who they want to campaign for.

Everyone is so upset at the NRSC for endorsing Crist. Let's practice what we preach.

this guy really thinks she is stupid.
Worse than that, he acts like some one who thinks all women are stupid.
way to go, Mounatian Mama, you go girl!!!

Mark Kirk flip flops all the time. He's done it multiple times regarding Gov. Palin. If anyone is interested, I racked Mark Kirk over the coals elsewhere:

Mountain Mama is right, you can't trust any Illinois politician, but the fact that Hughes is willing to make this statement is a positive.

narciso,  November 5, 2009 9:41 PM

Well there is plenty of time for her to endorse, now Crist is coming up 'snake eyes' lately, in another six monthes who knows

Taxman,  November 5, 2009 9:48 PM

Found this from Huckabee ragarding the Sarah Palin effect on NY-23.  Here is a hint Huck - I sent Doug Hoffman $50 because of Sarah.  How much did Hoffman pull in from your endorsement?  Ooops - my bad.  I have money ready to go to Marco Rubio when Sarah gives the word.

Huckabee said, casting his lot with the practical politicians. As for Palin, whose neon-lit celebrity appears to irk Huckabee, he sniffed, "She apparently did not have a big impact on the ultimate outcome."

Mark Kirk was questioning McCain's choice of her last year, according to some blogger sources. The guy is scared she'll endorse Hughes. She won't. But he's just scared of it.

Dan C,  November 5, 2009 10:23 PM

I AM REALLY GETTING SICK OF THIS FRAUD HUCKABEE. He acts like mr nice southern preacher who believes in small government and limited spending. Well his record tells a different story of supporting amnesty, easy on criminals, big spending, big government.

gelston the knowitall,  November 5, 2009 10:36 PM

perfect analysis

Whitney, Mountain Mama was our RAM on Adam brickley's original Palin site. I hope you get to know her. She was a free lance writer. She has great instincts and great knowledge.

Whitney,  November 5, 2009 11:00 PM

Good to know! Thanks for the info!:)

OldDude,  November 5, 2009 11:03 PM

Good food for thought.  Thanks.

onexsturtle,  November 5, 2009 11:04 PM

I kinda want her to do something shocking like support a conservative Democrat since it'll be obvious that a Democrat will win the seat.  And then perhaps during the general election there'll be 2 conservatives to choose from: a conservative Democrat and a conservative Republican. Either way, either would knock down Obama's policies.

I don't think she should endourse Hughes even though he's a solid conservative. Read this condescending letter from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee telling her to endorse Hughes:

Whitney,  November 5, 2009 11:13 PM

I don't know that Hughes is necessarily asking for her support. If you look at Hughes's website, he is really trying run as the anti-Mark Kirk. This is an additional way for Hughes to distinguish himself from Kirk.

By the way, the blog referenced in this post, the Illinois Review, is very good at covering conservative politics in Illinois. I try to visit the site a few times a day.

Um hm.
This "intellectual nugget" about Sarah was from a man that is on tv EVERY week...and more often when Fox pulls him in to give his "conservative" view.
Yet, he still can't light up or fill up a room like Sarah.
I've got "Huck Fatigue!"
TME!  TME!  :-)

IIRC, Kirk was against Cap & Trade after he was for it.

Wow!

Salina sells out Sarah, maybe.

"Due to the volume of ticket requests for the Sarah Palin event, the Salina Area Chamber is suspending all ticket request until further notice.

The chamber says the volume of requests it has received is too much to handle. The chamber is approaching a complete sellout.
If people have called and made a request already, it will be processed. However as of Thursday, the chamber will no longer take any requests."

The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce has suspended the sale of tickets to its annual dinner, which will feature former Alaska governor Sarah Palin.
“At this point, I am not saying that we’re sold out,” chamber president and CEO Dennis Lauver said early Thursday afternoon. “If you’ve already called us or contacted us, either electronically or by phone, or stopped by our office, what we’re asking us is that you be patient and not initiate a new request at this time. We are processing those requests at this time.”
Lauver said all 1,408 dinner seats have been spoken for, and workers are trying to determine how many gallery seats will be available for the Feb. 5 annual meeting. Once that has been determined — which he hopes will be later Thursday — and once workers have determined actually how many requests have been made, he will know whether further ticket requests can be accepted.
Lauver said a record number of ticket requests already has been received.
The previous record, he said, was about 1,500.
“We are at more than double that right now,” he said.

By the Salina Journal
All of the $50 dinner tickets to the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce banquet featuring former Alaska governor Sarah Palin have been sold, and chamber president and CEO Dennis Lauver said workers Wednesday began processing requests for gallery seating.
Lauver said 1,408 dinner tickets were available to hear the former Republican vice presidential candidate, who is the speaker for the annual chamber meeting and dinner Feb. 5.
"We have substantially more ticket requests than that," he said Wednesday morning. "I can't say exactly how many. I'd say we're probably approaching twice that amount, really."
Gallery seating at the Bicentennial Center is available at $25 a ticket. Lauver said workers have begun calling people who requested dinner tickets and asking if they would take gallery tickets instead.
"There will be some who wanted a table but won't get a table," Lauver said. "They will be offered seats in the gallery. Our expectation is that they will say yes."
The orders are being processed as they were received, he said.
At the same time, Lauver said, orders still are being accepted. New orders will be processed as quickly as possible.
"We're just asking that everyone be patient," Lauver said."

Aw shucks, Gelston!
(blush)

Mountain Mama,  November 6, 2009 5:14 AM

TOO TRUE, Techno, you brilliant guy!
;->
Hey, could you fill the Republican LEADERSHIP in on these insights, please?
THEY need to quit using Sarah's "sizzle" and respect her "steak!"

(Hmm..... taken out of context, that sentence sure sounds awful!)

Mountain Mama,  November 6, 2009 5:20 AM

hey hey HEY!
Let's not diss preachers out of hand, okay?!
"Gift of gab?"  Why you'd think we're all overly-VERBAL or something!
;->
(Um.....yes, we are!)

Huckabee's staff skewered me publicly Big Time once, then knocked it off immediately once they learned that I, too, am ordained----and all because I innocently wondered if Huckabee had ever paid taxes on the EXPENSIVE furniture a rich friend of his donated, supposedly to the governor's mansion.  Later, when the H. family moved out of the manse, they took that furniture WITH them----just as the Clintons did with some WH furniture.
Birds of a feather....

RINO-Hunter,  November 6, 2009 1:23 PM

Huckabee is a ginormous douche.
