“Sarah Palin? She's Family.....”

I remember at one of the 2008 campaign rallies a TV reporter was doing some vox pop amongst the crowd and a man was asked why he supported Governor Palin and he said “She’s my wife, my sister, my daughter, my mom, my neighbour – I know her”

Strangely enough it’s deja vu all over again – the crowds at the book tour are saying the same things even though a whole twelvemonth has passed, months during which this lady has been demeaned, mocked, insulted and characterised as a dimwit, a loser and yesterday’s news by the media hacks, the pundits and those expert Republican “strategists” who performed so well in 2006 and 2008.

“Why do they hate her so much” asked one Hot Air commentator recently. It’s not so much they hate her, replied someone else, it’s because they hate the silent majority, the ordinary, everyday folk who do the work, pay their taxes and just get on with their lives without making any fuss...and recently they have started getting a little irritated with the political class and started asking some awkward questions about healthcare, cap and trade and the ballooning deficit, about questionable political appointments, military strategy and the effectiveness of apology as a foreign policy.

This in turn has grated on the political class because they see the function of the silent majority as being the audience in the cheap seats who pay for their tickets and who are then expected to do nothing but sit back, applaud and be grateful to their betters on the stage and in the front row. Then suddenly this woman appears who had been thrown out of the theatre several months back and she dares to step onto the stage – without an invitation – and suggest that the show is not giving value for money, has gone vastly over budget, the script is rubbish and the acting is pathetic.

The director, the cast and the author are shocked and from the expensive seats their media mouthpieces start booing the interloper when all hell breaks loose as the audience cheers the lady and even start to move towards the stage themselves.

Why has the reappearance of Governor Palin resonated so well with the folks in the cheap seats?

Irritable Pundit at Brushfire Sparks thinks he’s cracked it.

Sarah Palin is Family.

But looking at those crowds on TV, I was struck by how half seemed thrilled for Sarah Palin personally, and the other half seemed wryly just to enjoy the fact that the naysayers were eating a heaping helping of crow again. Thats when it hit me. I finally and fully understand Sarah's appeal. More than that, I truly understand the zealous protective instinct so many seem to have about her.

Sarah Palin is ours, deeply and personally, because she is family.

Family might have disagreements and misunderstandings but when the outside world pushes against you the protective wall goes up and you stick by each other, your support is unconditional. You comfort when there is disappointment and despair, you share in the elation when there is success. Over the years the circle can widen to include wives, husbands and very close friends, people who are not blood but whose emotional ties to us create a bond as tight as blood.

Then there are people outside your circle, people that you might well have never met but whose fingertips in some way have brushed against your very soul, who you feel you just know.....

But someone outside of your immediate circle has to touch you in an extraordinary way in order to be viewed as family. It explains the devotion some have to a songwriter, author, or artist. We are impacted by their songs or stories on such a deep emotional level that we begin to bond our self-identity and close-circle feelings to them, generally all unknowing.

This is exactly what has happened with Sarah Palin. Somewhere along the way, Sarah connected on such a deep level that she has become family. She is ours. Her success makes us joyful for her sake and also allows just a touch of smug satisfaction at her success.

That’s why she is outside the rule book. That’s why pundits and strategists can’t get a handle on her. Flow charts and statistical analyses can only operate on a quantitative level – they cannot easily accommodate the qualitative....

...family always takes care of each other.

I think he’s got a point, don’t you?

David, great article, and that is pretty much how I feel.

I'm kind of in the doghouse with my wife because of my addiction to this phenomenon, but I can't help myself.

But, I'm expecting that she will read "Going Rogue", and when she does, I have a feeling any resistance will melt away.

(She did catch that Martha Stewart called her "dangerous" and thought that was ridiculous) <span> </span>

And nowhere is family more represented than here at C4P. The ordinary barbarians are her 'extended family'. We always have her back but because we are family we are not afraid to express our viewpoints in-house when we do not totally agree with Sarah's content or performance or have a bone to pick over something she said or how she answered a question (eg how Sarah answered the resignation question in the Hannity TV interview).

However the criticism offered at C4P is CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM and not the kind that you will find over at HA where people still want to claim Sarah is not intelligent or conversant on the issues, only speaks in cliches and platitudes, or is too divisive to be nominated or elected.

As far as we're concerned at C4P Sarah is very intelligent and competent, has well-thought out positions that she has expressed through her Facebook editorials, her speeches, and her interviews and is doing appreciably better now in the polls especially among independents.  If we have one goal at C4P, that is to 'keep it real'.

Thanks Aged P, I think that sums it up for many.  Sarah Palin is one of us.  Sarah Palin is family.

Two excellent articles at American Thinker that I would heartily recommend for enlightenment to understand liberals:

Sarah didn't put cracks in the glass ceiling.

She crashed THROUGH the glass ceiling
- in Wasilla in what, 1994 ?
- in Alaska in 2006
- in the US Aug 28, 2009

In the middle of her speech in Dayton, they knew she had blown to smithereens the Dem's version of feminism.

And, can you imagine being plucked from Alaska and then 1 week later giving one of the best convention speeches ever ?
- her convention speech showed she absolutely was ready, but her roots go way deep

FTA: "<span>where Palin goes people are usually happy"</span>
- they are also happy by observing her from their homes

Sarah makes me laugh, with joy.

Whenever she smiles or laughs, I laugh aloud.

It's kind of the same reaction I might have if Piper said something cute, but the laughter is complemented by the fact that Sarah's taking on the world - with a smile.

techno, read the 2nd article, awesome.

The left just can't help themselves.

Obama on radio right now in ads promoting fatherhood. Messiah, it would be more helpful if you committed himself to allowing free enterprise to flourish so that some of these 'fathers' could get back to work again so they can support their families.

Sarah's only half right about it being the message.

For me, she's both family and a fairy tale. It's a gift. We love the messenger too.

Whitney,  November 24, 2009 9:25 AM

She is family. Not only that, shew views the role of government through the eyes of a mother, daugter, and sister.

Yes, there have been many politicians born into every day, middle class circumstances. However, Sarah is one of the few whose view of government is through the eyes eyes of these family roles. It is not only her view of government; it is her worldview--the Palin Doctrine perhaps? :)

Obama is on radio ads now promoting fatherhood because the White House internals are showing that he is losing women voters to Governor Palin.

riley4palin,  November 24, 2009 9:43 AM

Whit, I like your thoughts/statement.  My only issue is the word 'Doctrine' because it brings back that MSM elitist snobby Gibson interview.

Do most people in middle America really truly understand the word 'Doctrine'?

I think the Governor should come up with her own word instead of Doctrine.  What do you think?

PEC,  November 24, 2009 9:47 AM

Whit - What happens is they get in office, start enjoying the good life and drift farther and farther from their roots.  Next thing they know they too have drifted away from where they started.  Look at Obama.  He was raised Middle Class but as he went to Harvard and then started playing the Chicago Political Machine, he was so far from where he started he lost his way.

Whitney,  November 24, 2009 10:01 AM

I was trying to poke fun at Charlie Gibson a bit with that one! :) Perhaps the Palin Precept?  Something a little less esoteric that uses more everyday language would be better. I don't know what exactly. She seems to mention the idea of the "kitchen table" often, perhaps "kitchen table politics" or a "kitchen table philosophy".

It was so interesting to read her book about her convention speech... I always knew her TelePrompTer wouldn't keep up... at the Lipstick joke, but wasn't aware she delivered all that remained  by memory... What an extraordinary example of how Sarah... from that time forward rescued and carried the campaign in the same manner... It is nothing short of STUNNING!

MarkRNY,  November 24, 2009 10:27 AM

When does the Guv go to Ft. Hood? I don't think she'll make it a photo op (in fact I'd bet the ranch she doesn't), but I'd love to hear about the reception she gets.

I remember the video on Greta of the soldier who didn't want to let go of her hand lol (Piper looked like she was keeping an eye on things). Have a feeling she's going to be mobbed. What a breath of fresh air for those guys.

Bill in Baltimore,  November 24, 2009 10:32 AM

I hope she starts reading the book soon, because it's starting to get cold
in Baltimore, and my doghouse is the bedroom . . .

I was going to comment just as you have so won't repeat... the man's statement in the post... and yours... is my mantra to all who chose to mock Sarah with their shallow remarks when the mention of her name comes up... Sarah is Family and I boldly let them know not to continue going there... sometimes I have to repeat It boldly again and do so while smiling and enjoying every minute of It.

OldDude,  November 24, 2009 10:50 AM

techno--

Both articles are great...I'd forgotten the term "wilding"...used by gangs roaming NY's central park, I believe, looking for female prey.  Both are "must reads" but the wilding article is incredibly powerful.  It hit me right in the gut and reminded me how difficult the war will be.

Editors--

I'd give "wilding" a separate thread to insure more Barbarians have it front and center.

Sarah's speech in Hong Kong... Her MAIN STREET VIEW... "And Now From Main Street" as she said beginning the second part of her address.
Main Street is where she came from, lives and will die!

Any way just a thought!

<span>(She did catch that Martha Stewart called her "dangerous" and thought that was ridiculous)  <span> </span></span>

Bill, I did not catch that.... wow......

Great article, and family does take care of each other. Sarah is the ultimate feminist, what a real feminist is, the left will just have to get a grip and go with the flow..... because it is flowing.

Bill in Baltimore,  November 24, 2009 11:31 AM

For anyone but hard core conservatives to play the clip of Martha Stewart calling Sarah "dangerous" is idiocy / lunacy.
- in that one statement, it exposes the left in ways that we never could

(and gives you a glimpse of why MS was wearing stripes, no ?)

manajordan,  November 24, 2009 11:40 AM

Great write up David. That is the way I feel about the Guv. She is definitely like family and I stand up for and with my family.

riley4palin,  November 24, 2009 11:49 AM

It is good to brainstorm here.

It looks like the words "common sense" are being picked up by others in the GOP now, so perhaps now those words should be secondary in everyday talk on the book tour. I believe the Governor needs to find a two or three word message of ownership that the other members will never use.

At this point it is all about her messaging and ownership to distinguish herself from Obama and other candidates.  Own It.  Run with It.

Let's see:

Palin Points
PALIN-OSOPHY
Rogue Thoughts
Palin's ABC's:  Accountability, Boldness, Common Sense Solutions
Sarah's Solutions
Sarah's MSM - Main Street Message

Still thinking.....

Feedback is appreciated.

karenfromny,  November 24, 2009 1:33 PM

I finished reading the book the other day.  The book is enjoyable and an easy read.  When I read chapter 6, The Way Forward, the tone changed drastically.  I was reading it as if I was listening to a speech.  Gov. Palin could read that chapter at any rally and it would blow people away...  I was actually envisioning her giving that speech and hearing the crowd cheering at certain spots...  To me that was the best chapter because it was about the future..

I just read that chapter again, and it blew me away again.

My kids are home from college today so it will be crazy but I had to visit c4p...

Bill in Baltimore,  November 24, 2009 1:48 PM

Karen-NY,
that is awesome, I also have 1 kid home from college, 1 coming tomorrow, and
the oldest coming Weds (she works for a conservative Congressman from Ohio,
he he)
I can't wait to read the chapter and then listen to it.

Obama was born into Communism and was steeped in it all through his life.  Grandparents, Mom, Dad, mentors, etc, etc.  He is a product of his upbringing.  He did not have a choice.

karenfromny,  November 24, 2009 11:47 PM

3 of the kids came home from college.  We all ate dinner together. and out they went.  So now I have some time.  I am sure you know, they come to see us but they really want to see their friends.  But I am looking forward to tomorrow, we are all going to the movies in the morning.  It is the only time they can fit in.  Because tomorrow is the biggest night of week for them.  Nice to be young..

Bill in Baltimore,  November 24, 2009 11:50 PM

The Sandra Bullock movies seems to be a good one for the young and the

karenfromny,  November 24, 2009 11:57 PM

That is what we are seeing - 11am.  We all like Sandra so it should be good.
