Should Governor Palin Call Out The Media?

Don Surber doesn’t think Governor Palin should call out the Associated Press on their “fact checking”:

I would not do it. Going to war with the Associated Press is as dumb as going to war with Fox News. Sarah Palin should leave the criticism of the media to others. We like our leaders a little above the fray.

Surber is a lively blogger but as an old fashioned newspaperman he still has ink in his veins... Dan Riehl has a very different view:

Because of media advances made in the last several years, Sarah Palin doesn't have to go over the media's head. She can go right through them. It appears to me that's precisely what she intends to do. Don't be surprised if it works, even as the media and some old-line politicos point how what a bad idea it is. If those folks had truly good ideas, most of the country wouldn't be so upset with them right now. But that's just another thing old media and large portions of the political class seem to be missing.

Riehl is right on the button here. Until recently the old media commanded the walls guarding the information highway. Politicians could only get their message out via the media and this made editors and proprietors key figures for the political class. As for the ordinary man and woman in the street they played the role of factory workers in the old Soviet Union – everything was done in their name but it was the party that told them what they really wanted.

Same with the media – remember it was only yesterday that writing a “letter to the editor” was the biggest way of letting off steam... and, of course, the editor decided which letters should be published.

Yesterday the unrelenting media assault would have “quayled” Governor Palin and, after the events of last November, she would have disappeared back to Alaska never to be heard of again until 2028 in one of those “Twenty Years Ago Today” pieces that the media loves to use to fill up some slack news time. The national GOP bigwigs, taking their cue from the Alaska Republican establishment, would have sidelined her and, with their beltway coterie of consultants and strategists, would, even now, be grooming the latest empty suit to lead them forth into the battle of the bland... and her supporters, shorn of any means of regular mass contact would either sink into a political torpor or peg their noses and vote as directed by the machine.

But the internet has torn down those walls – and just as twenty years ago East Germans could finally elbow their way past the border guards and the security police, so today more and more ordinary folk have realised that the secret mysteries of “journalism” are as meaningless and insignificant as the empty entrail gazing rituals of some long dead Babylonian temple priest.

Indeed, the internet has not just provided Sarah Palin with the means of by passing the old media to get her message across but it has also helped to create and sustain her supporters, The Palin Nation, even in the darkest days, by providing platforms like C4P to defend her interests and to familiarise themselves with the stratagems and schemes of her opponents.

Several months ago, as an observer from across the pond, ever fascinated by American politics, I just couldn’t get Sarah Palin out of my head and I posted a blog, later picked up by C4P, in which I likened her to one of my other heroes, General de Gaulle...

De Gaulle was relatively unknown to the French people in 1940 but millions of them heard his broadcast from London at the moment of their deepest despair and in those few minutes he became the inspiration and hope for so many. Governor Palin walked onto the stage at the Republican Convention, electrified millions and stole their hearts forever with her grace, her honesty and her love of life sealing there and then a contract and covenant of support through fire and flood whatever may happen. Camille Paglia called her an immensely talented politician whose time had not yet come. But perhaps, one day, just as in 1958 with de Gaulle, a message will go across Canada to the north saying her time has come – and then the banners must unfurl...

I think it’s the time – don’t you?

YES! Should call them out now because she needs to change the portrayal the ordinary American has of her, which has come through this media.

Down the road when she has overcome them... she might be able to let stuff slide does like most other politicians do.

yogi41, November 15, 2009 10:20 PM

Unlike Obama, she's not declaring war on the media by freezing them out of the process. All she's doing is calling them out on their bias and their errors. Big difference.

FOXNEWS is Fair & Balance most of the time. The AP out and out lies.

A, November 15, 2009 10:22 PM

Sarah is right.

That should be the default reaction to Sarah.

If I don't agree at first, after thinking and understanding, I realize, Sarah is right.

I learned that if Sarah does something that I don't understand, or would have disagreed with, I should wait and watch and learn, because, almost always, I will learn that... by golly, Sarah was right.

Now, if I don't understand something Sarah does, I know that I just don't understand it yet. When I do, I will probably say, Sarah is right.

So many pundit say, "Sarah is wrong," when the truth is that they "don't understand." Pundits need to drop the hubris and learn to say, "I don't understand, but maybe Sarah is right." In time, after they are wrong 100 times, maybe they will learn.

I am a fan of Don. This isn't really about him. His point is generally true, but Sarah is unique. The old rules of thumb don't apply.

But Don, it was the AP that declared war on Sarah, long ago. How should a person deal with an enemy, for they decided to be her enemy? Silence? Appeasement? Truth? Sarah said, if I die, I die, politically speaking and I won't sit down and shut up. She was honest. The AP can lie, Sarah will tell the truth. Battle was joined long ago.

Sarah Palin uses the Social Media very effectively and wisely. She does not really fight with the media - she shares her pont of vew with us, her Facebook fans. She is a private citizen who has almost 1millon fans.

This (among other things) drives the MSM totally insane. But all she asks is quit making things up. Very simple. Any jouranlist should know this basic rules without a reminder from a private citizen Palin.

As Hillel said "If I am not for myself, who will be?"

Governor Palin is standing up for herself and telling the truth in the face of lies told about her.

Fox News (from what I've heard them report) has not been lying about Obama.

Exactly!! Correcting the media is very different from controlling the media.

Excellent post, sir! Yes, the days of the letter to the editor are now long past. We see how Palin is getting her message out through the blogs, on Facebook and on Twitter, directly to the people! You guys are doing a great job here. I'm backing you up via Twitter with the Palin Twibe. We're auto-tweeting Sarah Palin's Facebook feed through our account. It goes out immediately to 2700 people who then can Retweet to their thousands of followers, and so on. It's as easy for someone to read C4P as it is for them to read the NYTimes......and there are no telling how many of Palin's 900K+ supporters are sharing her posts via their Facebook pages. I can see Surber's point on some level, but we are in a new era now and I think he misses the point somewhat. No more must any politician be beholden to certain television networks who may leave their most substantial commentary on the cutting room floor.

MarkRNY, November 15, 2009 10:41 PM

She already has. She should just continue to make it clear that MSM distortion when it comes to her is a given and encourage people to do some independent research. She'll know how to do it. She's got to "Cuda" them! It's touchy and has to be done thoughtfully or she runs the risk of playing into the "Whiner" label as per Nina Easton last night.

On the upside, the MSM is crashing and burning along with O--and she's got people like those on this site to slam them for her!

Anyone who's been paying attention and isn't biased as hell knows what they've been doing to her. As 12 nears, more people will be paying attention. O and the MSM are crashing and burning right into her lap.

She will have no future in politics if she is George W. Bush II. She has to ramp up the direct attacks against the Statist Media if she is to change the "mainstream" opinions of her ability to lead.

Our Cuda is making a list and checking it twice (twice daily!!)...

VidSweet, November 15, 2009 11:06 PM

Hear, hear. Your Charles de Gaulle post (among others) have been very inspirational. Yes, I remember the dark days... like election night and that Independence Day weekend when I was on vacation and it was a smirking liberal friend who told me of Palin's resignation while I couldn't check the news for myself. Oh, the torture and the darkness! Actually, I also wouldn't check just any news unless it came from people here whom I trusted. Not the media or not even the cable news shows. So I waited and at first opportunity, I came to honest friends and patriots at C4P. Friends here and throughout the Palin Nation carried me through those dark times. And it was that truthful information-sharing and hopeful support that inspired me. The trial begat *THIS* "Palin Nation":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgCGMVGCD1Y

This video showed what happened to Palin, and we see how it is repeating itself! Should we be surprised that the media is smearing Palin again? But we won't let anything happen, not on our dedicated watch! We have tools and skill on our side. The message is spreading. Share this video with 5 friends and ask them to share it with others. This is the most appropriate time to remind everyone of the fight ahead. But it'll also show the large number of people who have the same apprehension, questions and doubts that many of us have. With information and compassion, we are stronger and can fight our own fears and anything else in the name of Sarah Palin!

manajordan, November 15, 2009 11:06 PM

David, I think you are right on with this post.
Her calling out the media is just another example of her ability to sense the change that is coming. Americans are completely fed up with the MSM, much in the same way Americans are fed up with government corruption and such. Many of us want to call out the media, and Sarah is using her ability to megaphone our disgruntlement.

ReaganTMan, November 15, 2009 11:11 PM

Sarah Palin should do just what Reagan did. Continue bypassing the media with her Facebook notes and let the ordinary barbarians like us handle her light work.

Sheya, November 15, 2009 11:20 PM

When Geraldo calls out the AP, you know they are in trouble.

Geraldo, Ann Coulter, Kimberly Guilfoyle and Al Sharpton discuss Governor Sarah Palin’s upcoming book “Going Rogue”.

Sharpton: Palin candidacy helps the Democrats (Yeh right, that’s why they are going out of their way to destroy her).

Asked by Geraldo, What about the argument that she doesn’t have the chops for national office? Ann Coulter simply responds: That’s what all the Democrats said about Reagan.

The discussion goes on to talk about Governor Palin’s shout out to Hillary Clinton.

Now THAT is an awesome quote!!!

GAHanson, November 15, 2009 11:30 PM

I think she certainly should continue calling out the media for their lies and distortions. The majority of people are really fed up with the corruption, and lies in politics, and the MSM has proven that they are working hand in hand with the corruption, and lies. That is why I don't think the NEWSWEAK piece saying that Gov. Plain is "bad news" for the gop and everyone else will be seen as a negative thing by most people. Both parties are in big trouble with the American people, and when someone is seen by both parties to be "bad news" far more people will think of that as "good news" to them. Let the likes of the AP and CNN continue to "fact check" every word and analyze every punctuation mark, it makes them look silly, especially when they could be spending their time doing the same thing to the 0bamacare bill, cap and trade, and all the rest.

JP, November 15, 2009 11:35 PM

If they pulled the same stunts as the AP, they'd deserve it too.

Firelight, November 15, 2009 11:38 PM

I think at the end of the day the impression that is left for people to think is that if the media were actually doing their jobs correctly, Sarah wouldn't have to say anything.

Unfortunately, the media is so biased, blatantly dishonest and corrupt that Sarah has to stand up for herself and correct things.

Sarah just needs to continue to be Sarah. That's who we all admire and support. She chooses her battles and she has the fortitude and the guts to fight. Sarah said...I'm not a quitter, I'm a fighter. The medea and the pundits will end up the losers. Note that all the liberal medea good old boys are standing on one shakey leg with bankruptcy looming. America will never forgive or place trust in the corrupt media that promoted this radical leftist in the White House. I only see it getting much worse as they try to prop up this administration and it's destructuive agenda.

Sarah is a big believer in cleaning up corruption. Why should she give the corrupt ,lying media a pass? I say fight the lies. The media only has the power to destroy you if they have the people's trust. They don't have that trust and may never recover. Look at the ratings. Look at the number of print media implosions, look at the layoffs. Conservative media forums who do not ply their trade with lies are booming.

JeanA, November 16, 2009 12:01 AM

Sarah has been #1 search on Yahoo today.

JP, November 16, 2009 12:02 AM

Thanks for the video!

I was watching Fox that day she resigned with my two sisters. At first we were shocked, but then we were awed by this move. Sarah showed us then that she was all heart. We listened to her speech, and understood why she resigned, even though many were calling her a quitter. We knew then that great things were to come. We sat around speculating what she was going to do and my one sister stated, "She's now free to direct her course and take on the media and the phonies in any party." She was right.

I had learned of Sarah last summer when I came across the "Draft Gov Palin for VP" website. Like everyone else, I watched her stand her ground against the torrent of negative publicity, personal attacks, and unbelievable odds. I see that hate ratcheting up again, yet these attacks are no longer effective in my opinion. Frankly, they need new stuff to throw out there, but they will keep coming up short as they have picked through anything and everything she has ever said or done!

You folks here at C4P are tremendous in zeroing in on each ridiculous accusation and shooting it down. You keep us informed and provide us with lots of good reading. You have given Sarah the best thing a friend can do for another friend-you have her back. Thank you!

Anonymous, November 16, 2009 12:03 AM

Ernst, you are so right. People are waking up out there and it has become just too easy to argue against the old lame arguments. But it's really important to empower more people to the cause. Before I became disabled, I used to knock on doors for candidates. Now I am unable to do that, but Twitter allows me to do even more than I did when I was knocking on doors. It's important that we grow this cause as much as possible. We are all in this together. That's why we're training people how to use blogger and Twitter. It will take all of us working together to get the message out.

MSM game is weak!

MarkRNY, November 16, 2009 12:17 AM

Totally agree!

It's HOW she fights that's going to take skill. She should call them out firmly from the get go. It doesn't have to be "shrill", just firm. Humor's a great weapon. Make them a joke (it's not hard). Then she should have a rapid response team ready to kick you know what for her 24/7 on cable, radio, the press, etc. She doesn't have to get involved personally with everything that comes up.

Grassroots will be a huge asset. WE can make the MSM's life miserable!

She should pick her fights carefully and never back down. I don't think the MSM knows what they're up against in Lady Sarah.

Sarah standing her ground and fighting for what is right is a refreshing reminder of what made this country great and why this type ofperson must succeed and lead.
I was watching "The Alamo" recently and a scene struck me because John Wayne was talking about right versus wrong.
It seemed relevant for our times. I finally found it on youtube. Nice monologue.

I **heart** Ann Coulter!...lol

munchnstuf, November 16, 2009 1:48 AM

Okay. Here goes nothing.

I've been wanting to talk about this very subject for quite some time. In fact, I was thinking about it all day today. (Damn you C4P for posting this so late tonight that I will now have no time for a full response! Arrrrgggghhh!)

There are many points that I would like to make:

1.) Sarah Palin is responding to criticism of her and her book. Not going to war with an entire news organization.

2.) She is a private citizen. She is not (yet) the President of the United States. She doesn't have the resources of the entire Executive Branch of our government at her disposal to respond to attacks against her. No Press Secretary, Communications Director, etc.

3.) To compare her RESPONSE to a "critique" of her book to Obama's WAR on Fox News is... silly at best. (In respect to Don, I will refrain from what I would really like to say here.) The President of the United States is attempting to usurp the First Amendment of our Constitution by declaring what IS and IS NOT a news organization. A rather stunningly BIG difference, I say. (BTW, only a fool would believe that it is only his underlings who are conducting this war. They don't go on and on and on endlessly attacking Fox News without Obama's consent.)

4.) Does anybody in their right mind honestly think that Palin should actually iGNORE the attacks against her? What do they think the outcome would be? Lemme guess. "Palin Fails to Respond to [INSERT PRESS NAME HERE]'s Panning of Book." Well, I guess the press was right then.

5.) She cannot realistically leave all "fact checking" and media criticism to just her supporters. (Such as we barbarians at C4P.) Why? Because unless she makes a statement about it... THE. PRESS. WOULD. IGNORE. IT.

These are just a few of the arguments that I would like to make here. There are so many more but unfortunately I just don't have the time to make them tonight. Plus, I would really like to expand on the points that I did make.

time... time... time... DAMN YOU! must... sleep...

CliffNZ, November 16, 2009 1:59 AM

I think Sarah Palin knows how the majority of her supporters like her to respond. The objects of their lies staying 'above the fray" is exactly what these cowards rely on. Again, she doesn't play by the their rules. AND SHE IS LOVED FOR IT!

Bean Counter, November 16, 2009 6:10 AM

The reason the media was able to define her during the campaign with all those lies and distortions of her record was because she didn't/wasn't allowed to defend herself. She told Ziegler in Media Malpractice that she wasn't aware of the vast majority of the crap that was being spread about her, then those Einsteins running the campaign wouldn't let her talk to the press to set the record straight. This was one of my greatest frustrations during the campaign.

Correcting lies and distortions is not whining. You bet I want her to stand up and fight back and never allow that to happen again! And with her FB and twitter and folks like C4P doing investigative reporting that the state run media won't do, she can stay on top of it.

Adrienne, ha ha ha.
Can't wait to read your article today on my "break"

ReaganTMan, November 16, 2009 11:10 AM

I would like this opportunity to revise and extend my remarks. One of the things about analyzing Sarah Palin from a political scientist's point of view is that she is an outside the box thinker, which means most of the stuff that I learned in school don't necessarily apply as directly to her as they should according to the textbook.

I am a firm believer in the Reagan strategy of talking around the media and allowing your subordinates and surrogates to do all the dirty work for you. But, in studying Reagan a little deeply, he, too, directly addressed issues of media bias from time to time in sometimes subtle and sometimes humorous ways.

His description of the "incestuous media relationship" between journalists and liberals in the government was clearly a shot at a then unfriendly media.

For Sarah Palin to call out the AP, we should rather put this into a context that we understand that she will not dissect every little thing the media does, and therefore her criticism of the AP elevates this matter to a higher level. It's her way of drawing the line as the what she will and will not tolerate from the media.

It is clear that she is not going to tolerate the AP lying or taking insignificant facts and twisting them to cast her in a bad light.

One thing I have learned about Sarah Palin is to trust her judgment. Most people who don't read into her as deeply as I do have a tendency to take what the media says at face value, even if they push it off and say, yeah I know Palin did that but the media is just being unfair.

The fact of the matter is that every time I fact check Palin, she is always right. Ever since Troopergate, I have learned to put a higher level of faith and almost a blind trust into what Sarah Palin does. I saw it her eyes and I saw her body language the day she answered questions for the media about Troopergate and it was at that moment that I looked at the TV and pointed, saying "I trust you Sarah. I believe you, Sarah." And this stood through her resignation as governor of Alaska.

I agree with many in my circle and add to it this way: we are mere mortals. Let Sarah make her own decisions. It's her career and we are her army. And if her career results in our taking back the shining city on a hill, I am totally in.

If MSM had a reputation for diligently seeking facts and reporting accurately they might be believable but we all know that is not true. I have yet to doubt what Sarah has said or done. Reputation for integrity is the absolute best defense. I keep seeing comments from former Democrats who believed conservatives lied about "liberal bias" in the media until they saw how Hillary was portrayed. That broke their blind faith in the media being honest, fact reporters. They now recognize bias in so many areas and seek reliable reports from other venues.
