Who is dumb?

Certainly every person in this country is entitled to their own opinion, including Ann Althouse.

However, if a person chooses to write a blog, their opinions need, at the very least, to make just a little sense. In this case, Ann Althouse does not make sense.

She titled a post on her blog, "Sarah Palin is dumb."

Ms. Althouse, if you wanted to call Governor Palin stupid, perhaps you should have chosen to maybe, umm... not look like such a blithering idiot yourself.

How is it that anyone with common sense can take these two statements written in the same blog post, and come to the same conclusions you did, Ms. Althouse?

Ms. Althouse on Nicolle Wallace (a former McCain campaign senior staffer):

Had to trust? Because of your limited experience? Who else would you trust? Wallace was pushing for her own former employer, CBS! Her recommendation of Couric had an element of self-interest and should have been discounted.

So, according to Ms. Althouse, Palin should not have trusted the staffer assigned to her.

Apparently, they were afraid you were not ready, and they were right, so why didn't you trust them or at least accept that you owed them control over the presidential campaign? You agreed to take the subordinate position, and you had to know that their reasons for picking you had to do with image and style. If you weren't prepared to do it their way, you should not have accepted the part.

Now Ms. Althouse thinks Palin should have trusted the McCain campaign, which, presumably, would include the people who staffed it.

Either Governor Palin was stupid for listening to the McCain campaign or she was stupid for not listening to the McCain campaign. Please, Ms. Althouse, pick a side to argue.

Ace over at AoSHQ has a post addressing this quote from Ms. Althouse:

Why didn't you have a say [about what media you were interviewed by]? There's that "really" hedging: You didn't really have a say. You're pleading passivity and impotence but you want us to think you have what it takes to be President of the United States?

Ace says, in part:

Althouse's analysis seems to easily gloss over the fact that John McCain really was the boss here, and Sarah Palin really was the underling.

Please go read his post in its entirety.

Of course, all of this comes from Ms. Althouse reading two pages of a 400+ page book. It's always a great idea to write about opinions that you formed by reading less than 0.5% of what you're discussing, isn't it?

Since it's clear that Ms. Althouse doesn't know what she's talking about here, what was the purpose of her writing this post? Perhaps she plans to follow in Kathleen Parker’s footsteps. Calling Governor Palin stupid may actually get her on MSNBC. Yippee!

Of course, all of Ms. Althouse’s credibility will be lost when she sets foot on the MSNBC parking lot. Who cares about that, when you get to hang with the dreamy and spiritually uplifting Keith Olbermann, right?

Could you do us a favor, Ms. Althouse?

When you cross paths with Kathleen Parker and Nicolle Wallace at the MSNBC studios, could you tell them that the ordinary barbarians at C4P said “hi” and give them a great big Alaska bear hug for us? Those ladies will need lots of hugs over the next few weeks, it is going to be a bumpy ride.

One more question, Ms. Althouse... Are you still seeing Barack Obama in your dreams? I am just curious.

And please pick a side of the road to drive on, Ms. Althouse.

Update: RSM says:

[Professor Althouse] ask[s], why didn't Sarah Palin "have a say" in her media strategy? The answer is simple and obvious: It wasn't her campaign and it wasn't her staff.

Update II: Ms. Althouse responds here.

Ann is an unusually smart law professor from UW Madison who made the mistake of voting Obama last year. This post of hers was an Epic Fail of vast proportions from an unusually erudite and logical mind. I'm a regular over there and I really like Ann, but this post of hers just mystified me.

Totally disappointing, and not up to her usual standards.

DoodleBug,  November 13, 2009 10:07 PM

Somebody needs to help her out of the middle of the road.

ChillinInMN,  November 13, 2009 10:09 PM

Exactly. Another low-life wanting to get their 15 min. would be my guess.

You ain't seen nuthin' yet . . .

Bill in Baltimore,  November 13, 2009 10:10 PM

She spent a lot of words assessing two pages worth of info.

No matter what Sarah does, they'll hammer at her.

Nancy,  November 13, 2009 10:11 PM

How did the word "dreamy" and Keith Olbermann get into the same sentence?
I was having such a good day.

I have a question, who the bloody help is this schmuck. Never heard of her, but from the looks of things she wnats to be butt buddies with MSNBC. Trash Sarah, get a free trip to MSNBC, I guess that is the going rate these days in becoming famous, trash a Conservative, get some media explosure

Kjanlady,  November 13, 2009 10:14 PM

Whatever road this *itch is on, it's bound to be full of potholes.  Hope they are deep enough to keep her off stage until the middle of Sarah's second term in office.

Nancy,  November 13, 2009 10:14 PM

Who is writing Ann Althouse's posts?:)

narciso,  November 13, 2009 10:14 PM

AS I pointed out, when she did finally "Go Rogue" on Wright, Ayers, the unwritten cap n trade legislation, Althouse didn't take that tack

panchita,  November 13, 2009 10:19 PM

up at huffpoo another segment from Sarah's book
<span>
<p>
The Atkins bars -- that must be it. They were everywhere, in every hotel room and on every snack table along the trail. They were great, when I didn't have time to slow down and eat, but I didn't know why they were all over the place.
</p><p>"I'm not on the Atkins Diet, Steve."
</p><p>"Don't you know what a high-protein diet does?" he asked, ignoring what I had just said.
</p><p>He then launched into a discussion of nutrition physiology, holding forth on the importance of carbohydrates to cognitive connections and blah-blah-blah. As he lectured, I took in his rotund physique and noted that he used nicotine to keep his own cognitive connections humming along.

Every time I read one of your posts I like you even more.

You tell it like it is. I like that.

OldDude,  November 13, 2009 10:22 PM

K. Carpenter--

Great job!  You and Ace provide a great one-two punch and smackdown.  Althouse seemed to be stretching for every conclusion and you showed her shoddy analysis the light of day.

ALA,  November 13, 2009 10:23 PM

Its interesting that all these "little" guys are against Sarah.Bashing her not agreeing making her look dumb .All these Frums,Armeys,Althouses,Chamblisses etc...I think all of them just wanna prop themselves up Noonans,M.MCcains they all have one thing in common THEY ARE ALL IRRELEVANT.
Everyone thats  big and relevant is pretty much is in her camp.Rush,Hannity,Beck,Levin

Say what you want about HotAir and the threads over there, but I just stopped by
http://michellemalkin.com/  and she has three links to this website for the latest stuff on Sarah. I don't know if Michelle does all the posting of links in the right side columns, but whoever does is directing a lot of traffic over here.

That's gonna leave a mark, K.C.!

Schmidt of course isn't the only one who uses nicotine.  That would include the current President.  You know, the long time smoker who is currently pushing our health reform.

But I wouldn't get too worried about what one person says or doesn't say about the book.  Not everyone is going to like her.  Not everyone like Ronald Reagan, or Bill Clinton, or George W Bush, or even Barack Obama for that matter.  We shouldn't let each critical comment or statement consume us.  I mean, if Obama let that happen he'd have given up long ago.

According to Gallup, Joe Biden is at 30% approval among independents, by far the worst VP in history.  Do you think he cares?  Do you think Obama or his supporters cared about every conservative criticism that was thrown his way?

What we should care about is that she is finally getting to tell her sid eof thinsg and hopefully in the next couple of weeks get her story out instead of constantly having others tell it for her.

I mean, going on Oprah and Rush on consecutive days?  If that isn't reaching out and bipartisanship, I don't know what is.  Hannity and Barbara Walters.  Again, both sides.  She's bringing us all together.

An interesting factoid I noticed is that on Amazon her book is at #1 and has 340 discussions currently.  That's more than the total number of discussions combined for books 2-100.  Now, I don't know what that means, if anything.  But I think it does mean there is huge interest out hter, and that's a good thing.

I know I'm happy because after pretty much a year of not seeing her at all and reading facebook posts(as fun as they are), next week she'll be on for an hour with Oprah, an hour with Hannity, Walters, Rush, O'Reilly, appearances as signings, etc...  It'll be nice to finally get to see her again.  That's good enough for me for the time being.

Whitney,  November 13, 2009 10:33 PM

Thanks for the perspective.

GAHanson,  November 13, 2009 10:34 PM

I think I've found part of Althouse's problem with Sarah Palin, Althouse is 58, is just getting married for the first time, and has no kids.  Sounds like another Debbie Schlussel type to me.

BTW, poor Debbie Schlussel is giving vent to her PDS today also.  Try posting a negative response to anything Debbie writes on her website, and you'll get a nasty email back telling you that she is going to turn you over to the FBI along with all the Muslims who are stalking her.  What a paranoid loon.

Whitney,  November 13, 2009 10:35 PM

Lipstick, Thank you! I needed that laugh. That commercial gets me everytime.

Is that what you sound like? :) Or, is that more of a LA, MS, GA, AL accent?

DoodleBug,  November 13, 2009 10:39 PM

Thank you, guest. Well said, much appreciated, and very timely.

Lipstick,  November 13, 2009 10:39 PM

Oh, that is a little more deep south.

I sound very close to that but with a touch of the deep south replaced by some Texan drawl.

I will admit, I use more syllables than are necessary in most words.

Lipstick,  November 13, 2009 10:43 PM

Oh, good grief!

Schmidt had the b**** to lecture 'Cuda on nutrition? Are you kidding me? Miss Run a Marathon? Miss Lookin' Smokin Hot After 5 Kids at the Age of 45? Miss Run Most Every Day? Miss Eat Healthy AK Salmon?

What. A. Jerk.

Oh, yeah, this book is going to be GOOD.

Lipstick,  November 13, 2009 10:48 PM

I wonder if I went there and posted the following:

"This is a negative response to your bullcrap."

If that would label me as worthy of being reported???? LOL I should try it.

Whitney,  November 13, 2009 10:49 PM

Dang! Yes, if that isn't a hypocritical statement from Steve Schmuck! Are you kidding me?!?

I'm 19 years younger than the Governor and haven't had any kids. I run 3-5 times a week and lift weights 3 times a week, and I can only wish that I looked anything close to what the Governor looks like!

This is ridiculous! Is it Tuesday yet?

Lipstick,  November 13, 2009 10:49 PM

Come to think of it. This week's theme has been BULLCRAP.

I hope something nice starts to grow in all this crap real soon. I am getting sick of it.

Indemind,  November 13, 2009 10:54 PM

It's Amazing. It's as if someone sent money vouchers to all these pundits and said to cash in your voucher, you must go after Sarah. So the same pundits who were nice just last week, are all on the pad this week.  JUST AMAZING!  Hang'em High and The Beat
Goes ON.

Nancy,  November 13, 2009 10:55 PM

I think I pulled something trying to understand Ann's reasoning.

Whitney,  November 13, 2009 11:01 PM

I almost think that Biden uses better reasoning. Almost.

section9,  November 13, 2009 11:06 PM

Anne isn't THAT desperate for coverage. She's a well-liked right-of-center blogger who turned into Kathleen Parker for a day. Sarah will turn her around. Ann responds well to empirical evidence.

Obama lost her some time ago.Today's post was just boneheaded by Ann.

Anonymous,  November 13, 2009 11:09 PM

I am also a regular, if sometimes absent blog commenter at Ann Althouse's blog. I agree with Section 9's comments above. When Professor Althouse is on point, there are few like her. Unfortunately, this time, as in other times, the tendency to write bombastically-titled posts is her undoing. She sounds shallow as she grasps for an argument to make sense of the blogtitle, and wilts intellectually under the pressure of doing so.

For the record, I happen to think she's more conservative than she possibly is willing to admit, even to herself. This has nothing to do with having voted for Bush in 2004. She's just not ideologue.

Her commentariat are almost all centre-right, and unlike many bloggers, she likes to challenge her regulars in their beliefs. That is all.

Brian72,  November 13, 2009 11:19 PM

Ace really put the blowtorch to Ann. If you really want to see her flamed, just scroll down through the comment section:).

Hey Piasano,  November 14, 2009 1:01 AM

What we all have been waiting for is Palin on PrimeTime. She will be on everthing next week radio, tv and cable. She will occupy the airwaves and the elites still don't get how this no nothing from Alaska who should be kissing McCain's butt in there eyes is dominating the debate  simply because of who she is, a mother of 5 who got into politics to make things better and that she cares for this country and believes in the American dream.

After next 30 days lets see who is still standing and the country will know who the GOP leader is.

Steve Poling,  November 14, 2009 1:04 AM

If Sarah Palin is dumb, then we need a few hundred more "dumb" republicans like her. (And that amiable dunce named Reagan.)

Imagine you are a first round draft choice in the NFL and on advice from your older cousin you choose an agent he recommends.

After the negotiations are settled and you sign on the dotted line you find that the agent should have gotten you twice the money. You are upset and you realize that you decided to go with the agent as a favor to your cousin who told you that the agent had just broken away from a national agency and now gone independent and needed some clients to re-establish his reputation.

The football player was naive in the sense he trusted his cousin that the agent knew what he was doing.

And so was Palin naive in trusting Nicolle Wallace and the hacks in the McCain campaign.

Does that make her stupid? No. Too trusting, perhaps!

But what it is does mean is that Sarah Palin is not a inveterate skeptic and tends to accept things at face value.

Money Maven,  November 14, 2009 8:53 AM

Campaign staffers should have to sign confidentiality agreements and gag orders until 4 years after the election. Nicole and Steve were badmouth Palin from the day she was chosen.  A bunch of rinos. If Sarah does run, I hope she has a core circle of loyal and dedicated individuals.

Pat in NC,  November 14, 2009 12:55 PM

I followed a link to that post and had to leave a comment to the effect that people with Sarah's honesty and integrity generally grant others to have integrity until they are proved otherwise. Surprise, my comment deleted!
