Why 'Palin Derangement Syndrome' Won't Fade Away
C. Edmund Wright, at American Thinker, has an interesting article today about the mental illness which has afflicted liberals and establishment Republicans: Palin Derangement Syndrome, or PDS as it's referred to in the relevant academic literature. PDS, of course, is a relatively new psychosis having first been observed approximately 15 months ago.
Those most susceptible to this virulent strain of mental illness are self-anointed elite liberals who, curiously, have a notable dearth of accomplishments in life. Examples include Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, and the ratings challenged Katie Couric, to name a few. But, as we've noted here before, PDS is by no means limited to self-described liberals. Liberals who call themselves conservatives, such as David Brooks and David Frum, also suffer from advanced cases. Even a few legitimate, though elitist, conservatives have occasional PDS seizures.
Wright, in his article, notes that while Governor Palin holds no formal power at the moment, PDS is still an epidemic among the elite establishment. Indeed, it is in danger of being upgraded from epidemic to pandemic status:
The Alaska Governor is far more than someone who appeals to the (conservative) base, she is someone who can make the base appeal to America.
This compact yet comprehensive diagnosis was made in the early hours of the Palin Derangement Syndrome (PDS) outbreak, when Sarah Palin was first being introduced to the nation.
[...]
Having said that, PDS has now matured past epidemic to full-blown pandemic status with a derangement component that is now insanely intense. Remember, Palin does not have one whit of legal authority over these people or anyone else. Yet as her elected status has ended, her effect on the elites has only increased.
Wright next attempts to diagnose the reason why, despite Governor Palin's current status as a private citizen, the elite's PDS symptoms continue to progress, perhaps terminally:
As many have correctly pointed out, the pundits' vitriol and patronizing comments smack of a hatred and anger that only thinly veils the real emotion underlying their irrational behavior: Fear. Part of it is fear that she will indeed hold public office again. But it goes even deeper than that.
Wright's diagnosis is inarguable here. Nothing but fear, nay, abject terror, can explain the truly demented behavior and cartoonish tactics elites resort to in their vain attempt to discredit Governor Palin. Wright goes on to explain why this is the case:
It is an increasing awareness that Palin's impact is much more than a strong advocacy of conservatism as a sound political philosophy. These people are now finding it hard to escape the reality that her life is a compelling and real advocacy of conservatism as a powerful life philosophy. Life trumps politics.
And once the casual voter has related to Palin's life philosophy as something that is true, practical and worth adopting, they are dead to liberalism forever.
[...]
If your life revolves around convincing Republicans to nominate folks like McCain or around electing people like Obama, this is a scary prospect indeed. Like the signature scene from "Alien," this realization is causing the emergence from deep within the elites of something even uglier and more powerful than we imagined.
Wright next compares Governor Palin to another successful leader who evoked the same reaction from pretty much the same people:
While people who live a conservative base type life have always outnumbered the elites, the last public figure who evidenced it simply by existing was Ronald Reagan. And yes, many of the attacks on Palin today are the same attacks Reagan endured decades ago and they are coming from the same quarters.
Palin and Reagan are similar in that they both can use a few simple words and communicate more truth to average Americans than the media elites can with rambling professorial or lawyer speak. When she told Charlie Gibson that "you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska," she refers to a profound sense of reality one automatically gets when you see your mortal enemy every single day. Now I understood it the day she said it. Send a memo to David Brooks please.
Like Reagan, Governor Palin speaks the same language the vast majority of Americans speak. She is unpretentious, honest, and speaks her mind without first having all her movements and words pre-tested in focus groups or diagrammed in a Power Point presentation. Normal people who make this country work respond and, indeed, are grateful for this. Reagan before and Governor Palin now, understand this instinctively. Where elites see shades of gray, Governor Palin effortlessly distinguishes between right and wrong.
This kind of clarity is an abomination to elites. They see it as a threat to their belief that only they, with their privileged, pampered backgrounds, are nuanced and worldly enough to lead (never mind that these same elites have spent the last 20 years destroying the traditions and institutions that have made America great). They know that Governor Palin will never care what they think. For this reason she has power over them and this they cannot abide. Unlike other Republicans since Reagan, the D.C. establishment will never be able to change or control her, as Wright explains:
So while the elites eventually beat back Gingrich and the Bushes, they seem to know they will never do that to Palin. They never could do it to Reagan either. Like Reagan, Palin seems to arrive at her beliefs with too much foundation to ever rattle. That gives power to her spoken and written words that other Americans can sense.
Yes, there are more of us than there are of them. Sarah Palin has reminded us -- and them -- of that fact. And it drives them bananas.
The elites not only fear Governor Palin's visceral appeal to ordinary Americans, they also dread the likelihood that, like Reagan, she will be successful if she becomes president. Despite their best efforts to strangle Reagan's presidential prospects in the 1970s with warnings of nuclear war and economic disaster, they failed. When Reagan won and became one of the most successful presidents in history, those warnings were exposed as the utter nonsense a vast majority of Americans knew they were. When Reagan finished his second term, they had to spend the next two decades rewriting history in an attempt to discredit him. They failed in this endeavor as well.
They know the same will happen if Governor Palin becomes president. She has a history of success and accomplishment at all levels of government. Dan Calabrese, in an article for the Appeal-Democrat, makes this very point:
When it comes to the nuts and bolts of governing, Palin is one of the most substantive politicians to arrive on the scene in quite some time. And when it comes to having the intestinal fortitude necessary keep the interests of the people at the top of the agenda, I can't think of a single person anywhere in politics who is Palin's equal. The elite's horror over the prospect of a successful President Palin is the underlying cause of PDS. Reagan's success exposed them for what they are: nothing more than vacuous pontificators who, like their hero Barack Obama, have never accomplished anything of note in their lives. They only talk about accomplishing things while those like Ronald Reagan and Governor Palin actually accomplish them.
If you disagree with Palin's philosophy of governing because you are a political liberal, that's fine. But if you're an honest person, stop trying to pretend she's some sort of good-looking moron.
The more you read about Palin's experience in governing, the more you understand why the national political establishments of both parties hope to smother her political career in its crib. She knows how to govern — better than most of them do, in fact. She just won't do it the way they do it, and that scares the crap out of them.
The fact that Governor Palin is much younger and potentially far more influential than Reagan is not lost on them. Governor Palin is more accomplished, speaks better, writes better, and connects better than their Messiah, and this terrifies them. She has the vision, ability, drive, and clarity of purpose to succeed. She's smarter than all of them...and they know it. A successful Palin presidency is their worst nightmare. For this and other reasons, Palin Derangement Syndrome won't fade away.

All I could say is, "too damn bad for them!" Myself am enjoying all the spectacle, and want the deranged afflicted to keep showing that syndrome up until 2010, then 2012. Mm mm mm...keep it up libs!
Great article and added commentary. Just finished half the audio of Going Rogue while cooking dinner....great kitchen companionship. I foresee many great hours of tedious cooking chores with Sarah as my sidekick. Who knows what creations she will inspire....wonder if Alaska exports moose meat? We are woefully short on moose meat way down here in South Louisiana...seriously...get the audiobook...it's fantastic! Best birthday present I ever gave myself.
interesting tidbit to munch on this afternoon: http://gatewaypundit.firstthings.com/2009/11/obama-met-with-salahis-in-2005-theyre-linked-to-obamas-radical-pal-rashid-khalidi/
gotta go want to see if msnbc has any updates to this story (sarc)
Did any of the talk shows, MTP, etc have any tidbits about Sarah??
Sarah 2012!
One of the biggest criticisms of Gov. Palin is that she is not an intellectual. And yet, she reads and has read works by who even today's intellectuals admit are intellectuals such as C.S.Lewis and Thomas Sowell.
I read Reynolds column over at "First Things" and boy they don't have a clue. It is 100% intellectualism over there and NO focus on actually DOING things.
The conservative movement has mainly two areas: the intellectual/religious underpinnings or foundational thought/beliefs and second, the actual nuts and bolts of policy, politics, accomplishment, and leading.
You cannot be BOTH.
Sarah is not an intellectual and the last thing we want in a President is an intellectual, although Reagan came close in his writings and speechs leading up to 1980. But even Reagan was quoting others of conservative thought, not men of action.
Sarah is from the second camp: a leader and do'er. This is why we like her, and realize that the words and logic of Frum and Brooks and Noonan and Parker completely miss the point that the country needs a courageous leader with those commensense conservative values who actually lives them.
Sarah cannot win over the "First Things" crowd or the Frumsy-Brook crowd, but she won't try because she and the American people don't need them. Their writings are NOT the bedrock principles of the movement but are moderate or neo-conservative and they end up trying to persuade us that they can lead when they can't. Can anybody imagine David Brooks in an elective office? It would be as silly as Sarah being President of Yale, etc.
Intellectuals did not save Vienna from the Turks, but leadership and courage and tenacity did.
I don't have to worry about Sarah ignoring the elitist crowd, since she seems to know when to quote the legitimate intellectuals in conservative thought as opposed to the phonies.
And, it is becoming gradually apparent that I don't have to worry about my countrymen paying attention to such hollow writings as what we get from the Brook's crowd.
No matter what they say, she will live out HER conservative beliefs and they can do nothing about it up in their ivory towers.
She's coming.
I just read that Reynolds blog. His points are fine, he's certainly welcome to make whatever criticisms and judgements he chooses. What disgusted me was reading the comments. All of 'em. There are a whole lotta people out there whose highest and best use, near as one could tell from their comments, would be plugging holes in dykes. And that is being generous. My visit there reminded me of everything that was ever wrong with anything. Buncha dunces.
Intellectuals, such as they are, have never done much of anything but get drunk on someone else's tab.
Can you imagine David Brooks changing a flat tire?
What is really disturbing is that true intellectuals would never tear somebody down because they happen to be conservative activists, politicians, or do'ers.
Today's inside-the-beltway crowd encompasses a real hatred of those not in the club. It is a hatred that Reagan would not approve, and it is a hatred that was not as prevalent in the past.
The MSM talks about how Sarah alledgedly hates intellectuals and yet, the actual animosity is pretty much one-way from them to her. Sarah has respect for legitimate conservative thinkers and it has shown in how she lives her life.
Many like Brooks betray their contempt for Americans when Reagan didn't have that feeling at all.
Reagan would be proud of what Sarah has accomplished and how she has lived her principles of limited government, fiscal conservatism, love of our military and our country.
Since when was being a 'child of Reagan' a bad thing in the GOP?
No. But I can imagine Sarah presenting her budget to Congress.
Sapwolf: this whole Palin is not an intellectual is making me throw up. I have been surrounded by supremely intelligent people who could make the most glorious arguments sound believable. When I actually studied what they said, I came to the realization that they were full of bunk.
If people want to define an intellectual as someone who "sounds" intelligent then its their loss. I prefer to study someones actual words and then arrive at a decision.
Sarah has more intellect than the lot of them thrown together.
'It is better to know nothing at all than to know that which is not so." Abraham Lincoln
I liked this first sentence.
The Alaska Governor is far more than someone who appeals to the (conservative) base, she is someone who can make the base appeal to America.
It reminded me of her Indiana Right to Life speech. When she said, she understood when a woman thinks about changing the circumstances because society says you are not smart enough, or equipped enough to handle a pregnancy.
And her message to women is - You are not alone, you are smart enough, you can handle it, there is support out there like the Indiana Right to Life. You are blessed. It might be a challenge but all challenges bring joy.
You can't really argue with this message. It is all positive.
And getting back to the first sentence, she can make the base appeal to America.
Our local lib nutcase and hater wrote another cheap shot column about Sarah. Here's my response--thanks for all the ammo C4P!
<p><span>“The Problem of Palin”</span>
</p><p><span>By WLG</span>
</p><p><span> </span>
</p><p><span>“How do you solve a problem like Sarah?” queried the front cover of Newsweek.<span> </span>The answer of course is that liberals don’t have a clue what to do with the problems posed by Sarah Palin and the increasing numbers of Americans who think we are on the wrong course in this country.<span> </span>Given the dearth of answers, liberals do what they do best, embark on the politics of personal destruction.</span>
</p><p><span> </span>
</p><p><span>It is no coincidence that NewsWEAK accompanied their cover question with a photo of Sarah in running shorts that they had obtained illegally.<span> </span>That is the least of liberal transgressions.<span> </span>It seems that on both a national and local level, liberals are determined to reduce their gutter politics to an even lower level.<span> </span>One of the many valuable aspects of the ascendance of Sarah Palin is the laying bare of liberal hypocrisy and rampant misogeny.<span> </span>They just seem to hate women.</span>
</p><p><span> </span>
</p><p><span>A psychiatrist in Berkeley wrote a powerful article called “The Wilding of Sarah Palin.”<span> </span>For those of you who may not remember, “wilding” was the term a gang of teens used to describe their rape, beating, and leaving for dead a 28-year old jogger in Central Park in New York.<span> </span>They said they did it because they were “bored” and that “it was fun.”<span> </span>The New Left seems to be bored and is looking for victims to assault.<span> </span>Lately, Sarah seems to fit the bill.</span>
</p><p><span> </span>
</p><p><span>When Hillary Clinton was closing in on the Democratic nomination, she and her supporters were tarred with all sorts of invectives to insure the anointing of The One.<span> </span>Interestingly enough, the tarring did not come from conservatives but from liberals, both male and female.<span> </span>That was but a harbinger of things to come.</span>
</p>
<p><span>When John McCain chose Sarah Palin and she delivered her rousing and widely acclaimed speech at the Republican convention (despite a malfunctioning teleprompter!), the wilding came into full bloom.<span> </span>Some made no pretext.<span> </span>Sarah Bernhard wished that Sarah would be gang raped; David Letterman crudely joked about her “slutty flight attendant look” and made crude sexual jokes about her teenage daughter; Andrew Sullivan in the Atlantic Monthly said “Sarah Palin’s vagina is the font of all evil in the galaxy.”<span> </span>The non-stop references to her appearance and therefore, lack of intelligence, are too numerous to recount but you get the picture, don’t you?</span>
</p><p><span> </span>
</p><p><span>Interestingly, the National Organization of Women has been conspicuously silent on the issue.<span> </span>Lately though, even Whoopi Goldberg on the View recognized the cheap sensationalism of the Newsweak cover as demeaning to all women.<span> </span>Of course, Joy Behar did not.<span> </span>Neither did our local liberal columnist who asked “Is anyone oblivious to the fact that if Sarah Palin was not attractive she would be void of media coverage?”<span> </span>The answer is that as usual, Al, when it comes to Sarah Palin, you are both wrong and sexist.</span>
</p><p><span> </span>
</p><p><span>First of all, her book “Going Rogue” has already outsold every elected politician’s memoirs (except for President Clinton) in its first week.<span> </span>It is the number one non-fiction book in the country according to even the New York Times. It is Number One overall in the country according to USA Today.<span> </span>It’s Number One at Amazon, #1 at Borders,<span> </span>#1 at Hastings Books; #1 at Walmart, and #1 in non-fiction at Books a Million and Barnes and Noble.<span> </span>Harper Collins has already increased the initial printing from 1.5 to 2.5 million copies!<span> </span>Thousands of people are lined up overnight to get her signature—it’s been a 2-week long Black Friday for the retail book industry.<span> </span>Her book tour has probably had a more positive impact on the overall economy than the entire stimulus bill!</span></p>
<p><span> </span>
</p><p><span>When she appeared on her show, Oprah had the highest ratings she’s had in years!<span> </span>She has shown poise, dignity, and the ability to quickly articulate answers to a wide range of difficult and sometimes embarrassing questions.<span> </span>If you read her book, you would know that she is a bright, courageous, independent woman who has a profound belief in her faith, her family, and the freedoms of America.<span> </span>She has advanced a promising career in spite of formidable “good old boy” odds, all the while raising five children with her husband Todd.<span> </span>Her entire family personifies the American work ethic and the American dream.</span>
</p><p><span> </span>
</p><p><span>She espouses a common sense conservatism that says don’t spend money you don’t have.<span> </span>You can’t spend your way out of bankruptcy and you can’t spend your way into prosperity.<span> </span>She believes in American exceptionalism and is positive and upbeat.<span> </span>She does not believe that continually growing government and placing greater burdens on taxpayers is sustainable.<span> </span>She believes that energy independence and protecting our environment is not mutually exclusive.<span> </span>She also believes that energy independence is vital to national security.<span> </span></span>
</p><p><span> </span>
</p><p><span>In your continued sexist belittling of Sarah, it is noted that you show extreme sensitivity to other cultures and like to bow “12 to 15 times an hour!” while in Asia. Then you go on to mock those in America who speak with a different dialect than you just because they are from a different region in this great country.<span> </span>For the record, Sarah doesn’t drop the “ing” from her words as you so carelessly write.<span> </span>She does drop the “g” as many of us who have lived in the South or the Northwest tend to do.<span> </span>You should have also noted that many New Yawkers also seem to lack the letter “r” in selected words of the English language.<span> </span>Like so many faux intellectuals, you have been hoodwinked by someone who says nothing so extremely well…as long as his umbilical cord is attached to Mother TelePrompter.<span> </span>Once the cord has been severed, his speech is punctuated by an interminable collection of um’s and uh’s.</span>
</p><p><span> </span></p>
Half the time, intellectual is self-ascribed moniker given to those who possess no real accomplishments of their own. Accepting such a title is the height of vanity.
<p><span>Continuing your sexist rant, you also felt it necessary to critique her sense of fashion.<span> </span>You noted that “For my money, she looks like a Northwest Mountie.”<span> </span>I assu</span>
</p><p><span>me you meant to insult both Sarah and the RCMP.<span> </span>I once attended a funeral in Juneau that was also attended by an Honor Guard from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.<span> </span>I do not believe that I have ever seen a more professional and impressive group of individuals.<span> </span>They were on a par with the finest of our military Honor Guards.<span> </span>I suspect that if you ever had the courage to tell Sarah face to face that she looked like a Mountie, she would quite likely say “why, thank you!”<span> </span>She certainly doesn’t need Naomi Wolf to give her a makeover so she looks more “alpha”.</span>
</p><p><span> </span>
</p><p><span>As for your lame and idiotic attempt at “hick speak”, yes Sarah can shoot and she does hunt but she prefers moose over turkey.<span> </span>She also plays basketball.<span> </span>As a senior point guard in high school, she led her team to the state championship.<span> </span>As a senior in high school, Barack Obama was relegated to the second string of an average team.<span> </span>Just an empty suit sitting on the bench.<span> </span>Some things never seem to change.</span></p>
Speaking of Rashid Khalidi, any idea as to when The LA Times will release that video of Obama toasting Khalidi, they have the tape, they just refuse to release it
Well said.
I'd change "intellectuals" to the "Intellegencia". There's a difference. Einstein said to never expect moral courage from the Intellegencia during a crisis.
True intellectuals rarely think of themselves as such. I know a pretty well known priest who speaks 16 languages, is one of the world's foremost authorities on ancient Aramaic (Gibson used him as a consultant for The Passion), has forgotten more history than they'll ever know, and he <span>adores</span> Sarah. I know an old woman who taught philosophy and Theology for 30 years both here and in Europe, was married to one of the great philosophers of the 20th century (at the top of Hitler's hit list before the war broke out because of his writing against the Nazis)--same deal. She'd start a Sarah fan club. Difference is that these people have actually <span>lived</span> and they hang with all types.
The Intellegencia wear their Ivy League degrees as a coat of arms and are constantly seeking Power. They're not highly educated, they're thoroughly indoctrinated. They use "nuance" as an excuse to do nothing, which is always their answer to everything (and which they do very well). They make a living from it. All they've got down is Ivy League s*it speak.
Lincoln pronounced "chair" as "cheer", was a one term congressman from Illinois, and the same crowd called him "the original gorilla". Wipe them off your shoe.
The Siege of Vienna! Sobieski! ("I came, I saw, God conquered"). Take a trip to Poland Sarah! Show them that America isn't this punk who just stabbed them in the back. They'll carry you through the streets!
She will bring the indies in with her promoting fiscal sanity, and I believe she will reach more women as they read her book and can identify.
No, her book is not "God and Man at Yale" but a book that tells her story in her words, and it is a tremendous American story of a great leader.
The problem is that people confuse intellectualism with being intelligent. Governor Palin is intelligent, but she isn't necessarily intellectual. This is a good thing. Intellectuals may spout soaring rhetoric and ideological or philosophical theory, but they are not accomplished (at least modern day intellectuals). People who are intelligent apply this knowledge and wisdom to actually get things done. Look at who most of the self-proclaimed intellectuals are, they are commentators. It's kind of like half of the people who announce sporting events. They may talk a good game, but they certainly can't play one. Intellectuals may sometimes have good things to say, but they are merely words. They haven't "accomplished" much other than speaking or writing, not that there isn't a place for that. However, intelligence must be proven by backing up words with action. Governor Palin does this. How many times have we heard her say, "you've gotta walk the walk, not jus talk the talk".

Do the same clueless beltway elitists say the same drivel about Joe Biden? After all Joe Biden ran for President. he's been in Washington politics for > 35 years and he's now a heartbeat away from the Presidency. (Should Obama meet with an accident, or go to jail for corruption, or become legally insane when his poll numbers drop in the teens and no one reveres or even likes him anymore.) And by no stretch of anyone's imagination could Joe Biden be considered an intellectual.
So enough with all this intellectual chatter. We've had more than enough of elitist so-called intellectuals trying to run this country.......they've dug us into a hole so deep that it will take someone of Sarah's proven abilities to start backfilling that hole. She has something that the elitists can never aspire too....the wisdom that comes only with accomplishing seemingly impossible tasks, the courage to fight against the status quo, and integrity that cannot be bought, sold or imitated. Back off elitist snobs....you can never hope to achieve the level of success that Sarah has already mastered and never aspire to to match the successes that she will yet achieve.
Greatness is awarded to very few men and women according to history. It is a gift from God not a degree from some Liberal Ivy League School. Your elitist snobbery does not diminish Sarah but it does reveal the mesure of your own character or lack thereof. It makes you....dare I say it ...... IRREVELANT.
I just read that article, panchita...boy, this is getting weirder and scarier by the moment; just who does the Secret Service and FBi work for...the American people or the terrorists? Are you telling me the FBI and SS didn't know about these people? If that is true, we are in deep dish trouble in this country.
Oops
mesure = measure
I hate typos
Can someone please tell me if they know of anyone who has ever sat down face to face with Sarah and come away with the impression that she is dumb. Even couric herself has never said that.
is anyone a fan of the show Survivor on CBS? Let me tell you that there is this guy named Russel. Looks consist of missing a tooth, overweight and balding with a good ol' boy accent. You would think he's a common laborer.
Shocka, he's a multimillion oil company owner, who is playing the best out of everyone. Oh, but how can that be?, whine the frum/dowd/brooks crowd.
Its called street smarts and Sarah has them in spades. Keep your intellect, lots of those working menial jobs. Give me street smarts any day of the week.
I agree with what you say. We need a Ceasar in the White House, not a Hamlet.
Great comment Mark.
Thanks for posting this article and for your excellent comments on it Doug.
" Her book tour has probably had a more positive impact on the overall economy than the entire stimulus bill!"
That's not hyperbole Old Dude. It's given a lot of us HOPE and a reason to hang in there. Ironically, it's a one woman stimulus package for the media too. She sells their otherwise dead product.
Thank you, Mr. Wright to confirm that the conservatives make majority in this country.
Last year election, very few people knew who Sarah was and what her accomplishments are. The liberal media led the effort to investigate, report to us, and there we are.
It is almost comical to read the comments on the liberal blogs or online newspapers. No matter what the topic of the discussion there is always someone mentions how stupid Sarah is. And it is beyond their intellectual mind that people actually buy and read her book (it is such garbage). They still believe that the conservatives do not read, write, ever go to college, live in trailer parks and marry relatives.
As Sarah mentioned several times in her interviews – she is not focusing to win those hater over. They will never accept her.
<span> </span>Sarah is the experienced politician. I am confident she will do just fine personally, politically and financially.
If you really boil down our behaviors, we are driven by either fear or love or in other words self-preservation, or the welfare of others. Fear is often (though not always) pretty irrational. It's usually a fear of the unknown that is usually awfulized. Fear masks itself with things like anger, apathy, even boredom, in order to protect oneself from getting injured (whether or not they really are in danger). So many of these hate spewers are just really scared out of their minds, and are doing anything to protect against damage to their current political power, their way of thinking, their control of the media etc.
Fear is not always a bad thing, it actually serves to protect us, in a way, especially if there really is a danger. You can usually tell the difference between a healthy fear and an irrational unhealthy fear by the level of denial. It cracks me up when their fear is pointed out to the liberal elite class, and they spend a bunch of air time, or ink space denying that is true. At least a lot of Conservative people, myself included, actually own up to the fact that we fear for the country if we continue down this road.
Anyway, back to my original point between fear and love. Gov. Palin is someone that has lived and governed thinking of the welfare of others. The fact that she would come from a place of love rather than fear, just scares the fearful elitists even more. Because in the end love is far more powerful than fear.
Sorry for rambling. You can tell you've just read a good post on C4P when it gets you really thinking, and this one did.
They're not highly educated, they're thoroughly indoctrinated. They use "nuance" as an excuse to do nothing...
Love it!
hey manajordan
Thank you for your thoughts and comments. Excellent ;)
OldDude,
That was a thing of beauty! Way. To. Go.:)
As I read this blog some things come to mind:
1.) On leadership...John Maxwell has written many books on the subject of leadership. Like Palin he knows that leadership is not "position or authority". Mrs. Palin said (of C4P in fact "Rogue" p. 413) "that you don't need a title to do this." The PDS crowd are scared to death of a woman with no title, because she is the true leader... they're just the shirts,
2.) On Reagan... Mrs. Palin has spent her life studing the life and works of Reagan. She's ready to fill those shoes... she's also ready to anticipate the hits.
3.) On intellectals... these are people who pride themselves in their biblical illiteracy. They would hate jesus also as a populist for lepers and whore mongers.
I hope you're right Sapwolf, because everyone who reads this blog consistently, has read Sarah's book, has to agree that there was no vision, no substance in terms of policy in the book. From what I have gleaned from the posts on this blog is that this book served to reintroduce Sarah and allow her to respond to her critics and tell her story unfiltered by the media. So the expectation is that there will be a second book of more substance and vision. She gave us a taste in the final chapter, but I was too left wanting more out of the book, but forgiving in accepting that this was probably not the function of the book. Sarah does have work to do and i do expect more policy speeches of the type she gave in Hong Kong and I do expect another book ahead of her own campaign for the presidency, if she decides to run in 2012. I agree with the blogger that she has so much potential and more talent and charisma than perhaps any politician in America today, but seems to be satisfied with what she has rather than to build more on top of what she has. Another issue to ponder that the blogger mentioned was the team that surrounds her and the relationships she's had with people in politics. Who is Sarah's team? Are these people challenging her? Does she seek out sycophants or people who will help her govern with the best advice she can get? These were good thoughts and questions and ones that Palin fans, watchers, would do well to see if she is making any moves to improve on.
Very interestion article about Palin in the Los Angeles Time Opinion. The article kind of fooled me when I first started reading it because I thought it was an article in favor of Palin. Noooo....
Here is one of the comments that make you want to throw something at your computer...guess these writers can't help themselves:
If she prefers the "worst and the dumbest" to the "best and the brightest," Gezzz...guess what the
writer thinks about us...."worst and the dumbest".
I have read the book and it is awesomely good !
I know that Governor Palin has plans for her book tour and other plans going forward into next year about how best she can continue to help out the country.
I am pretty certain whatever she does, whether it is speak at the Tea Party conference (wish I could be there) or start a new website that it will be well received.
Heck, she might even Go Rogue !!!!
If that was neal gabler he is a wacko liberal. He might even deny he is a socialist but he is.
The L.A. Times article is very deceptive. At first I thought it was a positive article about Sarah, but basically the writer is saying that she may be dumb and incompetent, but she knows the anti-elitist sentiment could carry her all the way to the White House.
<span>"Palin is playing that same card on the gamble that anti-elitism will trump her own inexperience, incompetence and lack of knowledge."</span>
Shoutout at Hillbuzz.
If she prefers the "worst and the dumbest" to the "best and the brightest," Palin fans think that is exactly as it should be" This is the part of the article I found so disgusting. I guess we are the worst and the dumbest.
I posted a link to that article above. As far as I know, Gabler's proud to be a socialist. I still thought it was interesting.
I have two cases of PDS in my family. One has traveled extensively and lived abroad for years at a time during his career. The other has lived the last 10-15 years in Canada. I sense that neither has a strong, patriotic attachment to the US that Sarah has, and are looking down on her for feeling the way she does about America and Americans. They have taken the internationalist position over that of their own country, to some extent.

I also think that she should travel to Europe. Not necessarily to meet with Heads of State since she is not at present holding any political office here, but I think that if she does go and people find out she is there she will be invited to some function or other. In other words, let them make the first move if they so desire. It would go very far in shutting up the naysayers when they say that she has no foreign experience. She should also bone up on South America, since there is such a growing trend there of socialism and more of communism.
My husband said that she was very brave when she mentioned in one of her interviews about Bush keeping us safe after 9/11. At least she is not blaming him for everything under the sun.
juju
If being the worst and dumbest is believing in limited govt, low taxes, a strong defense, free will, and the culture of life as opposed to the culture of death, count me in!
Leftists only say we are dumb because we do not believe what they beleive in, remember what Margaret Thatcher said (not exact qoute) If my opponents are reduced to personal attacks then they only do so because they cannot win on the facts
has it been confirmed that she is speaking there?
I do not know about "the worst and the dumbest", but something that I have always wondered is that according to liberals, conservatives are redneck, stupid, illiterate, fat, missing teeth, bald, badly dressed, etc. On the other hand, they also say that we do not like liberals, because we are money hungry, rich people, who own corporations and do not want to pay more taxes to help the downtrodden, only wear expensive designer clothing, big jewelry, and all women are a size 2. (This last I read on an anti-Palin blog that the reason that she had lost weight was because in comparison to the Republican women that were all skinny during the convention she felt fat, especially because Cincy McCain is a size 0.) I really do not understand how it can be both ways. The irony is that they do not realize that there is a disparity in this way of thinking. Most people that I know that are successful, both Ivy League educated and State university educated with any kind of intelligence are conservatives.
I don't know why we are bashing intellectuals, and don't agree that intellectuals are against Palin.
Sapwolf wrote some more nuanced comments which I agree with.
It is not the intellectuals as such against Palin! Frum, Brookes, Reynolds et al attack her and frame their arguments that way, but fundamentally it is politics. They support different people (Reynolds supports Romney, as he states) and policies to Palin, so they do their best to stop her as a threat. Because she is a real threat.
Palin's strength in communication is her direct, simple and sincere style. And she shouldn't change that. And she is becoming more substantive, more in tune with national and foreign policy issues. She is moving in the right direction, but she needs to mix n match phrases and ideas (consistent with her position, message) to sustain interest, and to encourage people to look at what she is saying again and again.
For example, she talks about lowering taxes esp for small business to generate jobs. That idea is sound of course, but she needs to present that idea at times in different ways. You don't attract people to your ideas by changing your position of course, but you do by stating the same thing differently or with new ideas or some specifics at times.
Example of a mix 'n match, saying the same thing in different ways, and challenging others to look at the same thing again (more support, lower taxes for small businesses) in a different way: "Many small businesses now also compete in the global marketplace. Reducing taxes on small businesses will reduce the export of jobs overseas and our foreign debt. " ETC.
That can still be kept straight forward, using punchy phrases and words, which is Sarah's style. A winning style.
If she does that people (ie the voters) won't wonder if she is substantial or unqualified , if she is dumb etc over time. Of course those already biased (democrats) or in another camp (rep establishment, many pundits) will still hit on that meme, but they really don't count.
Just some thoughts.
Allie, accoriding to liberals it doesn't have to make sense, they just use one of the two stereotypes to suit their use whenever it works, I remember in the 2004 campaign that in one debate John Kerry tried to paint Bush as some evil rich guy who had profited unfairly somehow, I thought this was extremely ironic considering the fact that Kerry was probably 10 times richer than Bush, but at other times Kerry infered Bush was some stupid cowboy, I always hate it when they try to put the word cowboy in a negative light because I think cowboys are people to be emulated, they work hard and they are independent and self-sufficient, what's wrong with being a cowboy?
Yeah, that article also suggested Palin was successful at victim mongering in spite of her "inexperience, incompetance and lack of knowledge."
Where do these people get off?
well If your talking about chris matthews do I even need to say where he "gets off"
Militant: By intellectuals i mean those that think just because they went to and ivy league school and have a facile tongue are somehow are bettors. Anyone that can govern a state and gain an 80 percent approval rating is an intellectual in my book. Can anyone seriously dispute that?
As to your other point regarding Sarah's messaging. I think she hasn't completely fleshed out her positions yet. This is a book tour not a campaign.
You ain't seen nothin' yet.
To Obama?
Great, great post, Doug!
So much more I would like to say right now but, alas—as usual—I just don't have the time to bore all of you with my keen insight and clever witticisms, right now. Sorry. I know all of you must be absolutely crushed about it.
Suffice it to say that Sarah makes the elites look foolish.
She has lived her life in deference to God, her family and her beloved state of Alaska to the best of her abilities. And she has never hesitated to place her duties and responsibilities to those she served above her own well being.
She could resign from the highest office in the state one day, and then—the very next day—go fishing with her family while all of the nation's press & pundits struggle to find some hidden scandal in order to comprehend how a "politician" could ever do such a stupid thing. Clueless.
Sarah from Wasilla has shown us that you do not need a title to make a difference in our world. You don't need a degree from an Ivy League college. You don't need celebrities and VIPs slobbering over your pecs and arms and fashion sense.
All you need is common sense, a hard work ethic, a servant's heart, and a respect for what this Great Nation stands for: individual freedom and liberty for all.
[Oh, and the lipstick is optional.]
No vision? Um, I got a real strong vision from Sarah's book: clean up the Corrupt Bastards Club, and return more power to the most representative bodies of government: state and local. Keep government to its most rudimentary functions. Let people retain sovereignty over their own lives. Stop looking to government for solutions. Scare the crap out of our enemies with a strong national defense, then bring them to the negotiating table. Do the obvious right thing: develop our own national resources to grow jobs and reduce the trade deficit.
Did she say exactly what she would do about Wall Street corruption? No. Do we have a really good idea what she did about Big Oil corruption? Yep. Can we surmise that she'd treat the self-dealers in Washington with the same zero tolerance with which she treated the ones in Juneau? Yep.
What I didn't get from Sarah was the typical narcissistic navel gazing that apparently passes for intellect these days.
I can't speak for Wright, but only for myself. I have no problem with intellectuals. I was trying, perhaps unsuccessfuly, to distinguish between self-anointed "elites" and intellectuals. You can be an intellectual without being an elite. An elite is someone who thinks they are better than you, often with no basis. Those are the people I believe Wright was referring to and, definitely, those to whom I was referring.
It is full of policy. It is full of vision.
Did you miss that?
Allie, I agree. It should be "informal" and geared toward nations with
whom we share common military, energy and strategic interests. Poland and
Eastern Europe are naturals because of energy interests and because they border
on the Soviet Union as does--ALASKA! All share the need for missile
defense. She should go as an invited speaker as she did in Hong Kong and then
take a tour--meet the people! I've been there recently. They'd love her (many
already do). Poland's been with us since day 1 of the war. She could meet
with soldier's moms, etc.
Central America would be next on my list. Colombia (who has a truly
courageous leader who this administration and congress are betraying) and
Honduras depending on how things shake out there. O sided with the Castro/Chavez
dictator of course.
Last but not least, Israel. She's a staunch supporter and the Israelis know
by now that they have no friend in the White House.
She doesn't have to wait to be invited. One discreet phone call from Meg or
somebody could arrange to have her invited. They'd jump at the chance.
They feel abandoned (I know this personally in Poland's case) and Sarah could
come to represent hope to them too.
She's got a LONG time to do these things. In a way, it's better that she
waits awhile--maybe until after the mid terms. Things abroad aren't going to
get better, and I don't enjoy saying that. Wherever he's damaged a
relationship with a friend or ally, Sarah should show up eventually.
That's my 2 cents!
system.
