Steven, December 1, 2009 9:13 PM: One of the worst speeches given by a so-called Commander-in-Chief in memory. Very disappointing. Devoid of passion, strength, commitment, and energy. There was no feeling that he believes in what he's committing our soldiers to do in Afghanistan. Absolutely no confidence in the military's ability to execute a mission. This is very disappointing and cowardly, since all this president cares about is the politics of it all.

cookboy, December 1, 2009 9:17 PM: It's interesting to consider how delivery affects the speech. I only read it, ho hum, coulda been a lot worse. Then delivery by a speaker whose heart is in no way in it, makes it as bad as I'd have expected.

Kjanlady, December 1, 2009 9:21 PM: I have never listened to a single speech he has made...just sound bites now and then. I also cannot stand to hear him lying as he reads the teleprompter. I hope his ratings are in the tank. It's pretty terrible not to have even the slightest trust in your president. At my age, I shouldn't wish for this but I can't wait until the next three years are over and forgotten.

First of all, McChrystal gave three options: 80k for low risk victory, 40k for medium risk victory, and 20k for high risk victory. And we had, starting three months ago, 12-months to win the war or we would be defeated.

So what does Obama do? Gives 30,000 troops (on the above scale, medium-high risk victory) over a phased-in deployment. And then he says in the next sentence that we're leaving in 2011.

What?

It's going to probably take an entire year to get all the troops over there and positioned, and then soon as they get there we're just going to immediately turn around and come home? Where is the surge in this "surge"?

The way I read it, the speech is about the withdrawal of all our troops from Iraq and also from Afghanistan by july of 2011. I assume the 30,000 troops approval is just to mollify his commanders in the field, and to act as rear guard for the retreating troops.

I assume we will see civil disturbances, mass killings, burnings etc, as the fanatic fringe claim victory, as our troops retreat and the Iraqi forces and government fold. Followed of course by suicide bomb attacks on some of our cities.

The only good thing about all this is the it will happen right before re-election, dooming Obama to defeat.
But it might be too high a price to pay to get rid of him.

Any soldier that helps us over the next two years will be hunted down and killed when we leave there.
My advice for the soldiers of the Afghanistan Army is to desert.

Thinking about them makes him...tired. Poor Barry-O. 3 months haggling over troop levels with the General on the ground can interfere with Hoops.

You CANNOT win with a timeline! Even thinking in those terms is throwing in the towel. He's leaving the door wide open to negotiating with the Taliban--and he'll do it! So the troops are over there why?? The next soldier who's killed died for what?? They'll be forbidden to use the "V" word next. He doesn't think in terms of Victory. Too American Imperialist.

This was done to push the issue off the front pages (he thinks) so he can get back to what really matters--Copenhagen! He won't mention the war or the troops again for months if he can help it.

We've got a punk in office who if asked what it was like to be the President of the United States would say "Great gig". I hope Sarah's type type sending like hell right now. Help ruin his gig Sarah.

Afghanistan is a non industrialized country..dirt roads, no electricity, running water or even the most basic of conveniences. Barely no forms of communication, no radio, television newspapers and such.
They are a tribal nation. How the heck are we supposed to help them establish some remblence of a police force or army in 6 MONTHS!!
I feel like he's setting us up for failure, let alone letting our enemies know how long and how strong our commitment is. They have been fighting over there for centuries...they can wait.

This whole thing sounds politcal to me. The timing of our withdrawal is questionable, right around re-election time ain't it?
They should leave wars to the generals and keep the politicians out of it.

Look at these people. I see average everyday Americans who are in LOVE with this woman. Some are in the verge of tears if not crying already. I know my legs were shaking when I finally got to meet Sarah. I wasnt the only one feeling that way around me either.

I feel like it's full of empty words, like someone else wrote it for him (which I'm sure). Tonight, I am glad he mostly heeded that advice.

At long last, President Obama decided to give his military commanders much of what they need to accomplish their mission in Afghanistan. In the end, he decided to endorse a “surge” for Afghanistan, applying the counterinsurgency principles of “clear, hold and build” that worked so well in Iraq. Given that he opposed the surge in Iraq, it is even more welcome that he now supports a surge in Afghanistan.

This approach means, as Senator John McCain has noted, that “We now have an opportunity to build a bipartisan consensus in support of a vital national security priority: defeating Al-Qaeda and its violent extremist allies in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and ensuring that these countries never again serve as bases for terrorist attacks against America and our allies.”

We should be clear, however, that fewer troops mean assuming more risk. Talk of an exit date also risks sending the wrong message. We should be in Afghanistan to win, not to set a timetable for withdrawal that signals a lack of resolve to our friends, and lets our enemies believe they can wait us out. As long as we’re in to win, and as long as troop level decisions are based on conditions on the ground and the advice of our military commanders, I support President Obama’s decision.

gardunne63, December 2, 2009 10:04 AM: I watched the Office reruns on TBS but I saw enough of The One's speech to wager a bet that no one in the media can find evidence of any Obama speech in which he looks directly at the camera for more than 3 seconds.

His upper-thrust chin mannerisms when he looks at the right and left TOTUS's just bug the hell out of me. He never looks into the eyes of his audience.
