Dan K. Thomasson: Sarah Palin Has Charm and Staying Power
Dan K. Thomasson, former editor of the Scripps Howard News Service, wrote an article for the East Valley Tribune in regards to Governor Palin's appearance at Saturday night's Gridiron dinner. Here are some excerpts:
The former Alaska governor and last year's much maligned GOP vice presidential nominee and now author showed up at one of the toughest venues in town -- as the Republican speaker at the winter dinner of the venerable Washington Gridiron Club, a bastion of opinion makers who, for more than 125 years, have roasted politicians with glee, claiming rather disingenuously all the while that their fire only singes but never burns. As they say in the Army, "Hoo Ah!"
The very fact she was willing to take the chance of appearing in a room full of her most disdainful critics is testimony to her courage as if that were ever in doubt. But when you're shooting percentage is as good as the ex-basketball star from Wasilla's has been of late, confidence leads one into situations that might otherwise be called foolhardy. Her luck held and she came away with at least a consensus of grudging admiration, having hit several threes and a driving lay-up.
The mere politeness that normally prevails in this setting disappeared in a welter of good will and produced at times the most extraordinary scene of inside the Beltway cynics and their significant others asking for autographs, an event almost as phenomenal as she is. Meanwhile, her husband, Todd, who she recently made graphically clear in answer to tabloid rumors of a pending split was a hunk no woman in her right mind would give up -- "Are you crazy! Have you seen Todd?" -- was the center of similar attention from the ladies.
[...]
Throughout an evening when club members filled the air with quips about her penchant for sourdough experiences, the onetime impersonator of Saturday Night Live's Tina Fey laughed good-naturedly. She even joined a chorus of Gridiron singers to perform a parody of the "Twelve Days of Christmas," which included some biting comments about her and her philosophy, inserting her own line about adding mash potatoes to the moose steak.
In sharp contrast, her counterpart for the night, veteran Democratic Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts, one of the leading figures in the economic bailout, sat unsmilingly and obviously uncomfortably throughout Palin's appearance, obviously aware that he was upstaged in star power even in a town where his acerbic wit is celebrated.

Inside-the-Beltway cynics asking for Sarah's (and Todd's?) autograph. Poetic justice. Wonderful!
No stopping her now. She's kicking the doors down with a gorgeous smile and a twinkle in her beautiful brown eyes. And uncommon courage to go along with her goodness and inegrity.
That's our Sarah!
Barney Frank's acerbic wit is celebrated in Washington D.C.?
That explains so much about that town.
Facebook post.
>>having hit several threes and a driving lay-up
- uh, perhaps MONSTER IN-YOUR-FACE DUNK (in high heels and served with a smile)

If possible, I am going to try and get there at 6am. I won't know until my hubby gets home and lets me know if he has the day off to take care of the kids.
If not, I would love to meet you guys for lunch if weather permits. How can we plan this?

Saw Sarah and Todd today :) Great day!!
Unfortunately, I come home to negativity about her and now my mood has somewhat sombered. I'm a big Sarah Palin fan, why should that be ridiculed?
Who's giving you guff ?
D:
Try to brush it off. You are solely responsible for your own moods and feelings. Do not let the LSM affect you.
We are just smarter than them anyway for seeing Governor Palin in the proper light. She is an amazing woman who I believe has a calling for the greater good of the country. The LSM are just petty, jealous, and miserable people who want to gather more people into their pitty party.
Sarah and Todd are totally Amazing!
I especially like this part " The mere politeness that normally prevails in this setting disappeared in a welter of good will and produced at times the most extraordinary scene of inside the Beltway cynics and their significant others asking for autographs, an event almost as phenomenal as she is.
God bless Sarah, Todd and their precious family in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
BTW: Congratulations for finally getting to meet her! I know you have looked forward to this for quite some time. :)
Congratulations meeting our Sarah and Todd.
CruelaDev, Nancy, and Firelight:
Have a great time tomorrow!!
P.S. If you need to borrow some custom made Obama Ear Muffs for the snow and cooler temps, check Ebay. :)
Don't allow yourself to become what others think. You keep your joy all life long. What they (Sarah and Todd) gave to you NO one is able to take away unless you allow it to happen.
Remember, .... greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Prayer Warriors for Sarah Palin
UPDATE ON SARAH'S HAT: The green hat she wore is made by San Diego Hat company...you can purchase it at QVC item #192241. It is $40.00 with shipping and with taxes it ruins $50.00. I wanted it, I deserved it, I am worth it, therefore I ordered it. We are going on a harbor cruise of Newport Beach with a club group we belong to and will see the ships/boats
with Christmas decorations....I will wear it then.
Firelight,
I don't know how to get together with you, either.
If you can be there at 6, maybe we'll just have to go up to people and say, are you Firelight? Are you Bestbud?
We'll wait to heat what your husband says about being able to at least meet you for lunch. I think I am bringing my daughters with me all day, and just stay down there.
Praying for you!
One thing she will have going for her is that media folks will realize how much money she can make them.
No one will buy any magazines or newspapers with Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty on the cover. No one will be watching shows about them. By 2012 even Obama probably will no longer be box office gold. The media is already in awful shape. Newsweek lost over 30 million this year. Ad revenue down over 1/3 since last year. 2 full years of Sarah may be the only thing that can save them.
And then the NYT and WaPo and Life and everyone can sell those Palin commemorative editions and souveneirs like they did with Obama and rake in even more cash.
The media will push her and do everything they can to get her the nomination if only for the gobs of money they stand to make.
Congrats on meeting her!
Well, that was a fun read. People can't help but like her, once they actually get to spend time with her. I thought the comments about Barney were pretty funny.
I've been thinking that the media will push Sarah myself. Do you know the kind of sales, and ratings that would accur if she went head to head with Obama? You can't write a script better than that. Who's gonna watch Obama debate some joe blow? I mean the regular people who watch every year will watch, but if it's Sarah and Obama ratings for everything will be through the roof IMO.
Who's giving you grief?
Thanks everyone for your support :) You're right, i shouldn't let others dictate how I feel. With all your advice, i feel much better. I am sooooo bummed though as almost ALL my pictures did not come out at all. I'm hoping my friend got some good ones. it's so disappointing :(. At least I know I have the professional photographer picture coming my way in about 5 days :)
I just hope my Agent Dude will be there to get my wristbanc...otherwise...Oh Well!
I just hope my Agent Dude will be there to get my wristband...otherwise...Oh Well!
Not sure Firelight.. I may have a meeting...so no lunch for me...Nancy has my work number so give me a call and maybe ...if I get my wristband...we can hook up at Borders...
Autographs?! The old crusties melted...wow!
Best part of this story is that she shut down Barney Frank.
I thought he seemed bitchy. Sweet!
I wonder if Barney Frank got an autograph....I won't ask where. The only thing I heard him say was that he was glad Sarah went first, that he had the position of power.....little did he know.... he was no match for the rapier wit of the lady from the North. Poor Barney.....it sucks to be you.
Amen, Irma!
