Fairfax Goes Rogue

Hey everyone - I know it's been a little while since I posted here but wanted to file a report on today's event in Fairfax.

I arrived at 9:45 AM - right at the beginning of what turned out to be the biggest snowstorm that I have seen since moving to the D.C. area. It was snowing to beat the band, and I have to hand it to those people who continued to wait for hours as snow accumulated on their umbrellas.

Luckily, I was not standing in the snow with an umbrella. Instead, myself and my good friend Carly (see above) snuck in the front door of BJ's Wholesale Club and picked up our VIP passes. A nice guy named Nick ushered us into a room (tiny cube enclosed by curtains) which would later become Gov. Palin's office for the day.

While Carly tried to buy a book ("Ma'am, you can't purchase it unless you have a BJ's membership card"), she struck up a conversation with another VIP guest standing in line - and found out that his name was Randy Scheunemann (longtime McCain associate, Palin's foreign policy guru, and the guy who played Joe Biden in debate prep). That was when we figured out that half of the VIP guest list consisted of former McCain campaign staffers. And yes - they quickly figured out how to let non-BJ's- members buy books.

Scheunemann and the other campaign people we talked to were fantastic, and for the record I was told that the supposed rift between McCain and Palin is 100% hooey invented by our friends in the media. Take that, "anonymous campaign aides"!

Then the Governor arrived and pandemonium broke loose. The crew of ex-campaign aides (I called them the "VVIPs") were ushered behind the black curtains - I assume for a meet-and -greet later - while the VIPs with only one V were herded to the front of the line as the Governor took her place behind the signing table. Mine was the third book signed, and it looked like I was going to get a signed book and not much more. Luckily, I had remembered last night that I should take the precaution of putting my name and phone number inside the front cover of my book (just in case it got lost...or in case the author was signing that page...I admit it).

So, she did stop for a second and ask, "Is this you?". I responded in the affirmative and she responded "You're famous!" I didn't say it at the time, but a line came to mind about a pot and a kettle. So I got a handshake, and as I walked away she hollered, "Keep up the good work, Adam!"

I have a few more things to do before I can say that I will die a happy man - but this was definitely a big step in that direction.

So - then the real circus began as the rest of the cold, tired crowd started flowing in. Meanwhile, the very confused VIP guests were told to exit behind Gov. Palin rather than moving forward. This allowed me to quickly grab my inconveniently hidden overcoat and forget my briefcase (luckily, Carly did NOT forget my briefcase - for which I owe her a huge debt of gratitude). Somewhere during the coat/briefcase debacle I almost literally ran into Todd Palin, whose hand I also shook before catching a quick glimpse of Trig and stumbling out the back. So, my brief encounter with the Palin clan was slightly confusing but VERY enjoyable.

Not wanting to head back out into the cold before our Taxi arrived (we're citified people ride subways and don't own cars), we decided to stay and gawk at the crowd for a while - which is when we saw Gov. Palin's father, Chuck Heath, taking pains to shake the hands of all the supporters leaving the signing. At this point, I really regretted using the "VIP exit" as the nice men in security uniforms prevented us from getting back in to shake his hand. Still, he was quite something to watch as he approached every snow-weary customer, offered a hearty handshake, and bellowed, "Hi, I'm Sarah's dad!". I started wondering if anybody had thought of launching a "Draft Chuck Heath for U.S. Senate" campaign - because he definitely seemed to have the chops for campaigning and Mark Begich is up in 2014.

We also caught a glimpse of the Governor's mother, Sally Heath, but that was about the time when the nice security guards told us to get lost.

Our taxi quickly arrived, and we trudged back out into the fast-falling snow. As we drove off we noted that there the storm had failed to drive away the crowds. They may have had an inch of snow on their umbrellas (and trust me, some of them did), but by-golly, they were getting in to see Gov. Palin!

So, that was my day in Fairfax -and I can definitely say that it was worth it.

Oh...and Governor....keep up the good work! (and if you ever want to get in touch, Randy Scheunemann has my business card).

Excellent post.
You made me smile when you wrote, "I have a few more things to do before I can say that I will die a happy man - but this was definitely a big step in that direction".

Adam, thanks for being you! The entire Palinista Brigade of ordinary barbarians thanks you!

Thanks for the personal story Adam. Nice to finally meet the lady that you write such wonderful posts about.....you've finally made it...Sarah thinks you are famous. Guess she reads your posts.

Dynamite story Adam.

At the part where she wished you to keep up the good work, the first thing I thought of was smelling salts. I would of given her my patented cocked roundhouse powerwink and of course spent the week in jail.

:)

By the way, my 275 mile drive to Michigan and back today to see my son was cold but dry dry dry.

I guess this Global Warming thing only dumps snow on Texas, Louisiana and Virginia.

:)

(Oh, two :)'s in a post. Is that legal?)

Anybody notice what nice people her family are? I especially loved that video somebody linked that showed Trig smiling and waving off the bus.

Good for you Adam. I met her too today...she is amazing. I may repost my experience in Fairfax, VA.

Another amazing day meeting our Sarah. As some of you know, I met Gov. Palin on her book tour Nov. 22nd. at Roanoke, VA. Today I had another opportunity to me Sarah, Todd, Sarah's Dad and Mom, her auntie. It was big for me.

I arrived at the Fairfax mall around 7:30 am. It was raining. Within the next hour it started to snow but the multitude were not going anywhere. I kept busy for the most part listening to Sarah's audio book on my iphone. By 10:45 am, Gov. Palin arrived...it did not take long, by 11:00 the first bunch of people went in (these were those that were there since 8:00 pm last night). It took me another hour before I entered the door to walk towards the NEXT PRESIDENT of these United States. Security was tight.

As I walked towards the Palins, Todd was on right of Sarah...so he shaked my hand and I told him how proud I was of him. I also reminded him that he is a blessed man. He smiled, and said thank you. By then Sarah was already looking at me...so I said, "Sarah, it's a blessing to meet you again. We love you immensely at C4P". She asked for my name. Then she said, "I love you guys too and I appreciate your work. Say "hello to everyone there". All this time she was very sweet, smiling and looking in my eyes. I felt special. They handed me my third autographed book. I also met her mom, dad, and aunt. They are sweet human being. God bless their hearts.

She was so pretty with that hat and that cross in her neck. I also saw Greta by Sarah's table with cameras.

Gov. Palin is an intelligent and smart leader but when you see her in person, she even much sweeter, prettier.

I was also interview by CNN for approximately five minutes. They told me it will air. So watch out for that video. I answered them in a very positive way about our Sarah. I pray they show it, if not already.

Adam, I believe that you will leave this world as a happy man. You will also have the knowledge that you made many people, including me, happy. That is much more important.

cookboy, December 5, 2009 9:50 PM

Thanks for that! And to all of you relating your stories to those of us trudging through the ordinary life!

gelston the knowitall, December 5, 2009 9:57 PM

the famous poem goes:

There is a destiny that makes us brothers,
No one goes his way alone;
All that we send into the lives of others,
Comes back into our own.

Adam,
Absolutely delightful. Thanks so much for sharing that experience. I'm sure she thought it was great to meet you too.

M. Minnesota, December 5, 2009 10:12 PM

Thanks Adam for sharing!!! You have helped make many men and women die happy (politically) for helping to expose someone who shows excellence!!

Nat Hound, December 5, 2009 10:19 PM

I was looking for Greta, but didn't see her when I came through the line. Once I got up to where Jason Recher was, everything sort of went hazy with the excitement of meeting Todd and then Sarah. Overwhelmed by star power, as it were. By the time I got to Mr. Heath, I had sort of snapped back.

But what a fun adventure with a wonderful payoff at the end...

It sounds like most of the campaign staffers that worked with Gov. Palin fell in love with her and respect her greatly. It sounds like they are waiting on her to make that big decision or not before they move on to another candidate.

Vultures. Lets make sure C4P has 'the iist' of all the backstabbers that threw her under the bus after the election.

Adam,
Thank you for relating your experience. You are famous!:)

Here's my full write-up

I discuss the snow, what's really happening in the USA, and Barack Obama

Izzy, December 6, 2009 12:28 AM

I like your write up. I missed talking to you at the event. I was like an hour behind you...seems like. Meeting Gov. Palin for the second time in two weeks was a blessing indeed. I remember meeting you Bill at the 9-12 march on Washington. You were with your daughter and carrying a big C4P poster. I live in the DC metro area. Maybe we meet again soon.

T D, December 6, 2009 12:42 AM

Thanks for posting this, Izzy! I hope CNN plays your interview.

Nice to be famous to someone you admire. Sweet! Congratulations and thanks for writing this up in such detail.

eclecticak, December 6, 2009 1:20 AM

Ya know Adam, a LOT of people think this is all YOUR fault (draft Palin), for which we all owe you an immeasurable debt..... even though we lost the best Governor we'll ever have up here in the Frozen North to your dream......

THANK YOU for helping to launch the national version of Palin-mania!

gelston the knowitall, December 6, 2009 2:06 AM

One of your best ever, BiB

onexsturtle, December 6, 2009 3:48 AM

Very smart of you to write your name in the book and to give Randy your card. You will be hearing from her! :)

onexsturtle, December 6, 2009 3:49 AM

I loved how she told you, "you're famous!" LOL! :) Very cute.

dragonbelly, December 6, 2009 11:50 AM

Quick background - my partner and I arrived at 4:15 a.m. Here are our observations:

WINNERS - The PALIN FANS. Loyal, exceptionally patient, well-mannered and generous. FAIRFAX COUNTY POLICE OFFICERS - Good-natured, polite and did their level best to keep the crowd informed. THE PALIN FAMILY - Mr. Heath was a real treat - not very tall but is surprisingly barrel chested-strong man. TODD is eye candy for the White House-clearly man enough to let his wife have the spotlight. SARAH - she sparkles.

LOSER: BJ's = BAD JOB. Where do we begin? The narrative - By 4:30 a.m. over a hundred people were in line. By 6:30 several hundred. Mind you we understand that there has to be some form of organization but BJ's did next to nothing to accomodate ultimately over 2000 paying customers - many of whom traveled great distances, were elderly, considered this a "once in a lifetime opportunity" and stood outside in wet freezing weather for a minimum of 6 hours. Specifics -first - poor communications regarding promotion of the event. It seemed they didn't really want to sell books (just memberships) and did not care about the customers. For example, BJ's personnel made it absolutley clear that no one in line was "allowed" to use the restroom facilities inside the store. We are at a loss as to this rationale as each person had to have spent an average of $60.00 with BJ's in order to be eligble to get a book signed. Three port-o-johns were made available to the crowd. (do the math - 3 port o - johns for six hours = 1080 minutes - how can you possibly expect -even assuming only 1000 customers for that to be sufficient?) There was no clear rationale as to why paying customers were prohibited from using the facilities inside of the store. The policy was without merit and is degrading to a captive audience base. Secondly, even if you were in the same household you were forced to buy a second membership ($45.00) at no time did BJ's personnel advise that an individual with an existing membership could add another member at no charge. I specifically asked if a wife had a membership would a husband have to purchase a separate one and the answer was "yes". Third - general disregard for customers. With a captive crew of aprox 2000 guests would it have been so hard to offer hot chocolate or coffee to minimize the effects of the long exposure to the weather? A competent management staff could have made this happen. (In fairness they did hand out little packages of muffins and parked a cart of Diet Snapple ice tea at the front of the line) BJ's personnel were generally ill-informed. We observed numerous customers ask a BJ employee to direct them to the appropriate place. They were met with indifference - the answer being "I don't really know what is going on - but the end of the line is over there".

I am seriously considering filing a complaint with the Fairfax County Human Rights Commission. I would appreciate hearing from anyone else at the signing with their observations and experiences even if they were different from our own. I want to be fair.

In summary, BJ's disregard for its customers was shocking. We can only wonder if an Obama book signing would have been handled the same way....

SARAH MADE THE DAY!!!

Adam Brickley, December 6, 2009 7:50 PM

Agreed - BJ's dropped the ball big time. They were very rude to the VIP Guests - demande membership to buy book, rushed us out as soon as we got our books signed and whould not let us back in to get a handshake from the Heaths. Cancelled VIP meet-and-greet at the last minute for all VIPs who were not former campaign aides. We got to skip the line, but we actaully got to see less time with the Palins than anybody else who showed up. Great to meet Sarah but really mad that all VIP benefits were cancelled at the last minute.
