Gallup: The Rise of Alaskan Sarah Palin

Frank Newport, the Editor in Chief of Gallup, lists the "[t]he rise of Alaskan Sarah Palin" as one of his top 10 most intriguing poll findings of the year:

Last year's vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, has clearly become one of the winningest veep losers. At least among Republicans. Palin is the runaway winner when Republicans were asked by Gallup this month to name the living woman they most admire. Her favorable rating among Republicans is a robust 79%. In one poll in November, Palin was the leader for the 2012 race among Republicans [editor's note: the poll cited by Newport actually shows Palin the leader for the 2012 race among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents]. Her book remains the number one hardcover best seller on The New York Times best seller list.

Will Palin's fame and fortune last? We do not know. 2012 is a long way away. But what we do know as the year ends is that this fascinating woman has jumped from literally no visibility whatsoever on the average American's radar screen to one of the country's most visible politicians of either gender.

You can read Newport's entire list here.

I think sarah should plan a trip to isreal this spring.

I wholeheartedly agree with that. I think she should also head to the Vatican to meet with Pope Benedict the XVI. I heard when she was picked as VP, many people in the Vatican were very excited.

What is intriguing to me is the fact that so many pundits, pollsters, and "journalists" find the Governor intriguing! I don't mean that in a bad way towards Governor Palin, but it just shows they are intrigued by the public's interest in her and how so many people can relate to her. For us, her appeal isn't "intriguing"; it just makes sense. We support her in part because she is so down-to-earth and normal. In addition to being a local and state politician and candidate for national office, she's been a mom, a wife, a business owner, a journalist, a PTA member, a high school athlete, a runner, a fluitist etc--just as many of us are or were. So many of us feel that she can relate to us. Not only that, her political philosophy is viewed through the lens of the everyday woman.

The everyday woman has to live on her individual or family budget. She can't go borrowing money from China because she wants to purchase something; she has to repriortize if money needs to be spent on something else. Governor Palin believes that government needs to behave in this way as well.

Sarah may be intriguing or fascinating to some people because they don't comprehend her appeal, but we find her intriguing because we understand her appeal.

PatrickinOH, December 30, 2009 2:51 PM

Kjanlady, December 30, 2009 2:52 PM

Looking at the polls and articles which show the popularity of Sarah on the rise......it really shows the lame stream media and the hatefilled leftist bloggers are failing much like the current occupant in the WH........it means that people who were content to believe the lies about Sarah are taking a second look......and they like what they see......we could have saved these people all the trouble of rethinking their erroneous assumptions and overcoming their lamestream media induced bias......all they had to do was to visit C4P for a normal day of stories and blogging.....besides reading the truth for a change........they would have been shocked by the entertainment value of the site.....our sarcasm is unsurpassed and award winning......besides being a lot of fun......wonder if the Palin Administration will have a Sarcasm Czar.....plenty of qualified applicants available......ready, willing and able to poke fun at the Obamobot media.......funny, I see a lot of hate from leftist bloggers.....but very little actual sarcasm....do they have a sense of humor.....boy, it will suck trying to make it through the Oblamo years without it

Anonymous, December 30, 2009 2:52 PM

Gov Palin doesn't deny man may have a role in global warming. What she says is that man may only be some fraction of the cause, and that draconian changes in energy policy would not be worth the cost to the economy and our way of life for any effect they may have.
I think the Greenies, for the most part, are bonkers. But Governor Palin appreciates the environment and that we need to be thoughtful about how we use our natural resources.

dr v

Anonymous, December 30, 2009 2:56 PM

I disagree, Whit.
I think why they find her intriguing is because they've read so much garbage in the media that they expect a Paris Hilton version of Daisy Abner. Then when they meet the governor in person, they find her to be pleasant, intelligent, engaging and warm.
They can't say then, wow, this is an intelligent, engaging woman. So they have to say "intriguing".

Gallup is trying to keep him above 50% so he doesn’t end the year with the lowest first year historical numbers. (Seems they have this thing to prove Rove wrong). I predict that at the start of the year his numbers will drop drastically. The Christmas Terror Plot is Obama’s Katrina. A lot of people are away now and not following the news closely on a daily basis.

I made the same point in early November when every poll had him around 46 and Gallup had him flat at 50 even while his disapprovals kept going up. It was also an historical issue, Gallup didn’t want to have Obama as the lowest historical polling in first 10 months. A couple of days later he dropped to 47 (I Think).

I’m going to make a wild prediction, sometime in January Obama’s Disapproval numbers will overtake his Approval in the Gallup Poll. 45/47 my guess, oe even worse.

Obama is the first US president to go from Making History to become History in less than 1 year. Now, that's something for the history books and deserves a solid B+

10 words or expressions that indicate Sarah's potential for 2010 and beyond:

1) in the ascendancy

2) work in progress

3) soaring

4) exponential growth

5) above and beyond

6) arriviste

7) surmount

8) proliferation

9) spotlight

10) take charge

My guess is that most if not all C4P Barbarians have already seen it, but for those who have only seen it on YouTube I would suggest watching it again on TV where the quality is always better than YouTube's reduced quality.

But as i record Fox 24/7 anyway, if there is any previously unseen bits you betcha i'll have it up.

hrh, December 30, 2009 3:41 PM

So do I. That's why I don't use a clothes dryer. Or a dishwasher. And recyle more than half of my trash, including composting food. And traded in my beloved F150 Supercab (Myrna - sob!) for a Subaru Forester (Nellie) (what? so I name my vehicles, what of it? ...) when I got a job with a 60-mile a day RT commute. Etc.

But I agree with Sarah that it's the height of man's arrogance to think that we can so alter the earth's climate as to cause catastrophic damage. We're not that big or important or powerful.

Yes, we can do damage. I HATE litter by the side of the road. Especially plastic, which can really harm wildlife. But the alarmists have turned it into a religion of Mother Earth Gaia, and we are all pagans if we don't worship her.

I worship the Creator by admiring the creation. And I strive to be a good steward of the creation. But I don't worship the creation. /coming down off soapbox now

Bill, about email notifications you asked me yesterday, supposedly you need to do it once on each thread and you should receive email notifications on all replies to comments you post on that particular thread, I haven’t really tasted lately as I receive all the comments by RSS. I’ll check the box for this thread, send me some reply and I’ll let you know if it works.

If you really want to follow all the comments the best way to go is via RSS, the feed link is http://js-kit.com/rss/conservatives4palin.com you will get all the comments from all threads. The downside is that if you’re like me and get them on your blackberry too, you end up reading them wherever you go or are, (bumping into people in the process) and as you can’t reply to RSS any thoughts you have you forget by the time you get to your PC. So in short, WARNING: Receiving comments via RSS will significantly reduce your commenting capabilities.

The "Chutzpa" of this administration. White House Blames Bush for the Christmas terror Plot.

In response to Cheney’s comments the white house released a long statement but of which states:

[I] think we all agree that there should be honest debate about these issues, but it is telling that Vice President Cheney and others seem to be more focused on criticizing the Administration than condemning the attackers. Unfortunately too many are engaged in the typical Washington game of pointing fingers and making political hay, instead of working together to find solutions to make our country safer.

Oh, so it was OK to turn Katrina into a political blame game even though most of the fault lay on the than Democrat Governor who declined help from the White House. You talk about blame games? What the ... you’ve been doing that forever, which takes us to the next paragraph.

To put it simply: this President is not interested in bellicose rhetoric, he is focused on action. Seven years of bellicose rhetoric failed to reduce the threat from al Qaeda and succeeded in dividing this country. And it seems strangely off-key now, at a time when our country is under attack, for the architect of those policies to be attacking the President.

Well, Mr President in case you have forgotten, For Seven years we have been safe to a point that it allowed you to consider the war on terror over even when it remains in full swing. You have been in office for less than a year now and we have now had a third incident which you still can’t bring yourself to proclaim as terrorism.

[w]e are not at war with a tactic (“terrorism”), we at war with something that is tangible: al Qaeda and its violent extremist allies. And we will prosecute that war as long as the American people are endangered.

So fighting terrorism is just a tactic now, is it? How the hell can you claim to be fighting a war as long as the American people are endangered, if you don’t believe the American people are endangered?

Get a Grip Mr President, you can try protecting your but again, but it's not going to work, not this time. And if you can’t stand the heat get out, I know someone that can.

I could take that statement apart even further but I'll leave you guys to have a further go at it.

Whitney, December 30, 2009 5:50 PM

If the Obama administration feels that the Bush administration policies made us less safe and thus more prone to attack, why haven't they changed those policies? They've had 11 months. In the White House statement that you linked, the communication director speaks of Obama's action on Afghanistan (two sentences). Yes, he finally did take actions, but it took him months to make a decision. This decision was only 3/4 of what the Commander wanted, and his strategy was more of an "exit strategy" than a "victory strategy". The author subsequently references three speeches that the President gave. The President has talked a lot more than he has taken action. Plus, regarding airplane safety, there is an acting administrator at the TSA, not a permanent one. Obama has not filed this position, but he has a czar for just about everything!

People should read what the Pope actually said, not what the press reported that he said. It's all about stewardship for him too, not crank theories. People on this site of all sites should know better than most not to trust what they say about someone they hate, and believe me, they HATE the Pope.

This Pope, btw, constantly uses the term "subsidiarity" to describe the best form of government. Subsidiarity means government closest to the people is the best, i.e. small, decentralized government--ideally neighbor to neighbor.

I have no doubt in my mind that if the Pope could vote, he'd vote for Sarah.

These pundits continually say 2012 is an eternity away. Well it isn't if you factor that this growing narrative about Obama's seriousness and leadership ability continues on this course, then really you have Palin in a position to stop Obama's agenda cold if the GOP take control in 2010. And she won't let the GOP screw up in the aftermath of this takeover as they did in the 90s. She will make this guy impotent and will be sure to take the credit for any improvement in the economy or in the nation's mood after the GOP takes over. 2010 is the key year. IF at the end of next year the GOP is in control with a Tea Party Platform platform, its curtains for Obama in 2012. So in my mind, 2012 is really a year a way, not some far off unforeseen time. We will know everything we need to know by the end of next year as to the prognosis of 2012 for Sarah.

I'm not sure I would buy into that Sheya. If you ever got caught "fixing" your numbers, you would be dead in the water as a statitician/pollster.
Many polls are already biased toward liberals if they poll the general public. Liberals are less likely to show up in the voting booth and older people tend to be more conservative and are more likely to vote. That's why polls like Rasmussen poll lower, because they use a formula of likely voters as opposed to general public.
Rasmussen gets accused of being conservative biased, but it's really the approach to polling that makes his numbers "favor" conservatives.

MarkRNY, December 30, 2009 6:27 PM

From the Pope--

"If the Church’s magisterium expresses grave misgivings about notions of the environment inspired by ecocentrism and biocentrism, it is because such notions eliminate the difference of identity and worth between the human person and other living things. In the name of a supposedly egalitarian vision of the “dignity” of all living creatures, such notions end up abolishing the distinctiveness and superior role of human beings. They also open the way to a new pantheism tinged with neo-paganism, which would see the source of man’s salvation in nature alone, understood in purely naturalistic terms. The Church, for her part, is concerned that the question be approached in a balanced way, with respect for the “grammar” which the Creator has inscribed in his handiwork by giving man the role of a steward and administrator with responsibility over creation, a role which man must certainly not abuse, but also one which he may not abdicate. In the same way, the opposite position, which would absolutize technology and human power, results in a grave assault not only on nature, but also on human dignity itself"

Sound familiar?? I recall a certain lady from Alaska saying something very similar. You won't hear anything like the above coming from Algore, etc.

It's kind of funny that most of the people who hate Sarah hate the Pope too. Probably because they both stand up for Life.

Everytime I think, please, run, Sarah run! I end up thinking back to a german movie that played in the USA as Run Lola Run!. Great sound track.

So can you read because you are a Huck fan.. or can you not read because you are a Palin fan?
I know the question baffles even me!

Like a castle built of sand.

The leftwing folks who had invested so much time and ink with the narrative of Sarah being a not-so-smart right wing extremist are now finding out that she is actually an intelligent and friendly person. So there's a lot of agony in their internal soul searching that's going on. Poor souls.

Events can be like little tectonic shifts. You can feel some rumbling but you don't know how big the earthquake is going to be.

But we have seen signals: The rave reviews of her Gridiron speech right in the citadel of the leftwing reporters. The thunderous and prolonged applause of her brief appearance at the Tonight Show and the well received appearance in the Oprah show that doubled the TV ratings. And, of course, the phenomenal book tour of her memoir that showed not just the huge crowds but the intensity of her supporters who lined up the night before the book signing in freezing rain and snow. And what a sight it was. Even her sworn enemies have acknowledged that.

The book tour is indeed the defining moment of Sarah this year of 2009.

Finally, this paradigm shift was confirmed when my daughter visited us on Christmas. She is a true blue Ivy liberal from San Francisco who had always railed against anything and anybody conservative.
To my surprise this time, she didn't have a negative thing to say about Sarah.
Instead she speculated that Sarah might take over the GOP and transform it into her own party because she is a maverick. Wow !!! That's a lot of respect shown for any person who could achieve that: taking over a major political party single-handedly.
She went on to say that the leftwing had made a mistake of trying to paint Sarah as a religious rightwing extremist. What a revelation.

The perception of Sarah by the liberals have already begun to change.
That's why the attacks by the some of the holdouts seem to become petty and innocuous and even silly. Not that they'll love her now. But that they will still regard her as an adversary, but with RESPECT.

What a difference a book tour make.

VIVA SARAH !

Brahaha. Too painful to think about.
come on, the guy is kind of cute.
He isn't going to run. Huck's base was pre Sarah. He knows there's no way he can compete with her fundraising.
He pretty much admitted the fundraising was a killer for him.
I think now is the time to make alliances. I think Governor Palin should be out building her cabinet right now.
Forget a presidential primary.
I know Romney will never abdicate until the writing is on the wall, but can you imagine if the party just right now started putting together a team for 2012.
Not just a presidential candidate, but a presidential team. An economic captain, a national security captain, an energy and environment captain.
What a unique way to run for president.
What would that say to people? It would say, "I'm not playing political games. These are the people that can do the job and this is what we're going to try to do."
No back room I'll scratch your back you scratch mine.
