Going Rogue in Roswell; Updated: Springfield Added

Yesterday, Governor Palin had two book signing events, one in Tempe, AZ, the other in Roswell, NM. We discussed the Tempe event in an earlier post. After leaving Tempe, she headed to Hastings Books in Roswell for a 5:00 PM book signing.

C4P reader Andrew was in Roswell for the book signing and provided us with the following account:

My wife and I were at the Roswell book signing. We’re not a large community. The population is about 50,000. They gave out all of the 1,000 wrist bands right away this afternoon, and the line stretched much farther. The temperature was bitterly cold, in the low 30s, and the huge amount of people who waited for hours outside was amazing.

We were not allowed to take cameras near the actual book signing area, so we were not able to take any pictures of Governor Palin. However, we did get pictures with Chuck and Sally Heath after our books were signed, an amazing experience. I have heard people rave and extol the virtues of these people, and I must admit that I was a bit skeptical. But they really are every Mom and every Dad. They were kind, took time to sign our books, pose for pictures, and talk. Sally even scolded Chuck for signing his name on "Sarah's page". She signed on the previous page.

I'm a teacher, Chuck Heath was a teacher. He recalled that when he was in the business you could still "yell at the kids and make em act right." Sally took one look at my wife's 37 week pregnant tummy and started loving on her, even hugged her and said a quick prayer for our unborn baby boy. They were so normal, and genuinely excited and happy to meet everyone in our generous community.

Sally Heath had no idea that just two minute before, Governor Palin had put down her signing pen, put her hands on my wife's tummy, looked her in the eye, and said, "How much longer". My wife responded, "December 23rd is the due date." "A Christmas baby!" Governor Palin exclaimed. "How wonderful! God Bless you. You look so cute." My wife and I were amazed and speechless at her sincerity and kind attention. She shook every hand, asked for names, and made kind comments. We became fast friends with a couple in front of us. He told her, "You have this Marine's vote." She thanked him for his support and said "God Bless you. Thank you."

I asked Chuck Heath, "Will she run if the people want her to?" He smiled and said, "When we are together, we talk about family and politics. I leave politics alone. She hears about that from lots of other people."

I am convinced that one of the best things that could happen to this country is for regular people like Sarah Palin and the Heath's to be prominent examples of our citizenry. Who says that we should be governed by our "betters"? We should be governed by those we choose to represent us and our values. People like Governor Sarah Palin and her family.

Andrew also sent us a few pictures from Roswell. I have posted two of them. The first is of Andrew and his wife posing with Chuck and Sally Heath. The second shows the signatures Andrew obtained on his book. Note that Chuck Heath did in fact sign his name on "Sarah's page".

Update by Doug: Governor Palin continued her book tour today in Springfield, Missouri. Below is video of her arrival this morning at Borders:

For more information on today's event in Springfield, go here and here. Some of the more observant individuals attending Governor Palin's book signings have noticed people lining up in a rather unusual pattern as they wait to have their books signed. Tammy Bruce has a graphic depicting this pattern. Curious that.

Update II by Doug: KTVI, the Fox affiliate in St. Louis, has more on Governor Palin's appearance in Springfield here, including a good video of people in line being interviewed.

Thanks for this account, Andrew! What an experience. One of the bloggers at the Palination, Lynda (aka gamsbo) who occasionally comments here wrote about her experience at the Roswell signing:

posted here because it's the newest thread.

Cadet experience at Obama's speech:

- pretty cool to be there
- one cadet noticed he referred to himself a lot
- another observation, well the bad guys just got 18 months to prepare

4th regiment formed up at 4:05 for the 8:00 speech.
- so much for that night of studying for finals

Nancy, December 2, 2009 12:13 PM

Andrew,
That is so awesome! God bless you, your wife and your baby!:)

Jesse Cornish, December 2, 2009 12:14 PM

Such a wonderful story to share, thank you, Andrew. Hang on to that book!

Money Maven, December 2, 2009 12:15 PM

Thanks for sharing. I don't remember if anything like this ever happened before with a political memoir or any book tour. Do you all know of any website that have catalogue little every day encounters with an author before?

This is so refreshing just ordinary citizens sharing their experiences of meeting an author. Gov. Palin did the right thing by meeting as many of her supporter as possible.

Bill in Baltimore, December 2, 2009 12:21 PM

MM, for a one-page outline of the Book Tour's C4P articles (and more), go here

Money Maven, December 2, 2009 12:25 PM

Thx Bill......I know about that. What I meant is everyday people going to these events meeting the author and then sharing their experiences. Really cool. I like looking at the pictures, videos and reading the articles.

DefCon66, December 2, 2009 12:28 PM

Going by the reactions of so many at these signings, in my opinion Sarah is a tall drink of water to a thirty nation. My throat's abit dry as well.

DefCon66, December 2, 2009 12:29 PM

That's thirsty...sorry.

riley4palin, December 2, 2009 12:29 PM

The Governor took the time to rub the belly of a nine month pregnant woman waiting in line?

Good Lord. Can I love this woman anymore?

Brian72, December 2, 2009 12:30 PM

I wonder if there might be a book signing in Nashville the weekend of the TeaParty Convention that they say Sarah is keynoting, Feb. 4-6. The turn out would be huge, but she could be tired of the grind by then, Who knows. I'm only two hours away, that would be great.

DefCon66, December 2, 2009 12:36 PM

Why is it when I try to rub a woman's belly I usually get slapped? This is discriminatory I say! I know I know, I'm a smartarse please forgive me. :)

CharterOakie, December 2, 2009 12:39 PM

Doug, thanks for posting.

Andrew, thanks for sharing. Wonderful.
If your boy is born on Dec 23rd, he'll share that birthday with my daughter (among many other people). God bless.

This is a whole lotta goodness. Wow. Andrew, bless your family.

PatrickinOH, December 2, 2009 12:53 PM

Has Meg confirmed that she is speaking there?

Anonymous, December 2, 2009 12:57 PM

off topic but do we know if there is stated topic for the speech tonight at the college of the ozarks?

PatrickinOH, December 2, 2009 1:00 PM

and I was wondering any word on Stand up for Our Nation?

Brian72, December 2, 2009 1:03 PM

i haven't heard one way or the other, but the TeaParty organizers sure act like it's a done deal. We'll see before I make any plans.

Roswell! Sarah's Going Extraterrestrial! Were Skully and Mulder there? (Skully actually got kind of hot as the series went on). If a UFO pops up they'll say it's Sarah's ride (the truth is out there).

Great account Andrew. Man, I wish I didn't live in the backwoods of Manhattan.

manajordan, December 2, 2009 2:12 PM

Doug thanks for posting this. Andrew what a wonderful experience, thanks so much for sharing it. God bless you and your wife and your Christmas baby :)

riley4palin, December 2, 2009 2:21 PM

Ouch. I don't think that was in the White House talking points today. This doesn't look too promising for Oprah's Christmas Special with the Obamas coming soon.

How will the huge egos handle getting beaten badly by Charlie Brown's Christmas or a holiday marathon of Murder She Wrote?

CharterOakie, December 2, 2009 2:22 PM

That's it. You'll never get to drive the bus now.

Money Maven, December 2, 2009 2:23 PM

SHe needs a different name. Too many STand up for our Nation websites. I think that's one of the reason RINO David Frum change the name of his forum. Palin needs something original so no one can piggy back on her efforts.

CruelaDev, December 2, 2009 2:26 PM

Nah.. I hear tell that Piper will take over the book signing gig until Sarah can post bail!
So Piper has moved up and will no longer have time to drive!

Brian72, December 2, 2009 2:27 PM

It is hard to read the date, but it looks like September '08.

yogi41, December 2, 2009 2:33 PM

Her parents are so cute. God love them. :)

Lakerfanalways, December 2, 2009 2:37 PM

Thank you so much for the awesome video. Sounds like you had a great time. I wish she would come to Los Angeles but I guess that wont be happening for a while. It's Ok though, I am enjoying her book so much..its just awesome..and her parents seem like the coolest people

O/T: Jim Robinson, owner of Free Republic, once again threw down the hammer about Mitt Romney and RINO's not being supported by his site. He's done this numerous times in the past, but today, he also just OFFICIALLY endorsed Sarah. And yes, this is big, as FR is the 2nd or 3rd most frequented political web site. In one of the comments sections, he wrote:

"To: awake-n-angry

We do. I think the last candidate we formally endorsed was Sarah Palin. Should she decide to run again, we will endorse her again BIG TIME!! As I said a few days ago, Free Republic is already basically Palin Country anyway. It’s a natural match. She’s the strongest most reliable CONSERVATIVE in the running.

Again, his site has always been very pro-Palin, but it's nice to read it straight from the Big Guy's mouth (or fingers).

Sarah Palin Stars as Heroine in New Children's Book

While Sarah Palin is certainly making waves with her own best-selling book “Going Rogue,” the former governor and vice presidential candidate is also in the spotlight with a cameo appearance as a heroine in the recently released children’s book “Help! Mom! Radicals Are Ruining My Country!”

In the book written by Katharine DeBrecht, “Governor Sarah” (a character based on Palin) attempts to help two young boys hold onto their dream of a swing-set business which is struggling as a result of high taxes, heavy regulations and 246 czars.

“I am trying to let all Americans know that these radicals are killing the American Dream and I want to stop them from hurting people that produce products and provide jobs,” the Palin character consoles the frustrated boys after their business is destroyed by “Marxus Obunduf” who is based on President Obama.

SLIDESHOW: Click here to see illustrations from the book.

“I used Palin because I wanted to point out that there is nothing wrong with standing up for your values regardless of who attacks you,” DeBrecht told Foxnews.com. “The book also shows that “Marxus” and his radicals are basically killing the American Dream in their grab for power. I want to tell kids that they can achieve their dreams by working hard and not relying on the government to help them.”

The book also touches on the former governor’s life in the limelight and shows the boys “ruffling through their bills” when they see a special report on the TV.

“We have breaking news just in from a 37-year-old man who lives in his parents’ basement that Governor Sarah’s mother is actually an alien,” the excited anchor woman said. “And from this exclusive source, we can confirm that Governor Sarah feeds her children dog food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.”’

And with a moral in every children’s story, the boys learn that it is “mean” to spread rumors about people and that Governor Sarah “seems like a nice lady” and thus feel for a really nice girl in their class who is running for student council and bound to be the victim of malicious and untrue gossip.

“In this Internet age, we need to let our kids know that it is wrong to spread rumors and lies,” DeBrecht explained. “Unfortunately, many so-called journalists have basically told children that this is permissible as long as you disagree with someone’s opinions. Our kids deserve better than the shameful example that has been set before them. What message does this send to little girls who may want to enter the political arena? Don’t you dare lest you be Palinized?”

Oh I forgot to mention this but I am hearing reports that Sarah misattributed a qoute from John Wooden in her book that was said by a Native American athlete John Wooden Legs anybody heard this or if there is anything to it?

riley4palin, December 2, 2009 3:21 PM

There goes Jim's Christmas Card from Kathryn Jean Lopez.

Recovering Democrat, December 2, 2009 3:28 PM

I was THERE! I was the third in line with my cousin. We camped out over night in the frigid air. I was interviewed multiple times by the local media. One reporter especially got an earful from me when he asked if Sarah was qualified to be president.

It was SO wonderful to meet Sarah, Aunt Katie and Chuck. I don't have time right now to write up my experiences right now, but you can see our interviews on the local stations. We are getting ready to head down to the College of the Ozarks to hear the speech tonight.

I will pass along this tidbit:

I asked Aunt Katie how her Thanksgiving dinner turned out. She said it was "wonderful, especially since a certain person wasn't there." Ha ha ha ha

Oh, and my real name is Nicole Coulter. I'm the gal from Wichita :-)

We had such a great time, and I'll give you more details of the speech later tonight.

That's an old story, there back to blanketing the plane story all through out the blogosphere

PatrickinOH, December 2, 2009 3:42 PM

Well I want to know because if she is going to mix up qoutes of people with similar names how can I support her for President
sarc

MsLiberty, December 2, 2009 3:49 PM

Wow, what a great encounter, Andrew -- thanks for sharing! And congratulations on the impending arrival of your baby -- that's quite a Christmas gift!

I love reading all of these accounts. They are making me all the more excited for tomorrow. I head out of here in a few hours to drive up to Fayetteville. Local media says we can start lining up at 9 pm. Eeeeeee!!!!

riley4palin, December 2, 2009 3:52 PM

OT:

I received a letter from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital today. For those of you not familiar with St Jude's, it is a research hospital in Memphis, TN catering to children with cancer. They asked that I fill out a Christmas card for a child as well as make another donation. I plan to do both.

This got me to thinking about Governor Palin and her book tour. I know she plans on donating her royalties to the military at an upcoming book signing, but wouldn't it be wonderful if she starts promoting charitable causes at her book signings as well during the Christmas season?

The Governor can pick the charity and make some kind of announcement prior to her book signing at each event.

Jason or some other local event volunteer can be in charge of the coffee can for donations and it would be placed on the table where the Governor signs her books.

If its too late to coordinate this before the holidays, perhaps start it up on the next leg of her book tour.

Just a thought.

Brian72, December 2, 2009 4:01 PM

Maybe if Sarah will come to my House district in 2010, which is between Memphis and Nashville, she can do a fundraiser function for St. Jude's while in the area, and visit some kids in the hospital too. Or Feb 4-6 2010, around that TeaParty convention in Nashville something could be worked out. It is a great cause, they do a whole lot of good there.

eclecticak, December 2, 2009 4:03 PM

YAY Aunt Katie! ;-)

PatrickinOH, December 2, 2009 4:05 PM

I should have said this a while back, congratulations Andrew, thank you for sharing your experience with us! Unfortunately I could not make any of the signings in Ohio due to the fact I was taking final exams, oh well I am sure she will be back in Ohio soon I am glad you got to meet Sarah and her family can't wait until I have the pleasure

section9, December 2, 2009 4:09 PM

Nice effort, but Sarah looks a little "younger", how shall we say, when done by most cartoonists.

riley4palin, December 2, 2009 4:19 PM

Brian, I thought of the TeaParty event in Nashville in Feb after I posted the note about St Jude's. Excellent idea.

I bet Congresswoman Michele Bachmann would be more than happy to make that trip with Governor Palin to St Jude's as well.

PatrickinOH, December 2, 2009 4:22 PM

Yeah I don't she would have mistaken a qoute from John Wooden, HarperCollins will probably correct it in later editions I only commented on it becuse some smartass sports reporter at OSU was making a big fuss over it, I am so dissapointed that he is from OSU

PatrickinOH, December 2, 2009 4:26 PM

more importantly are you ok?

Anonymous, December 2, 2009 4:28 PM

i agree because I think it makes the valid point that the attacks on the governor have been so over the top that at this point the continuing attacks are either discounted or actually a positive for Palin (because they prove her point about the media) except for the far left who will never like her anyway

PatrickinOH, December 2, 2009 4:30 PM

think, sorry

PatrickinOH, December 2, 2009 4:31 PM

Anonymous, December 2, 2009 5:30 PM

First time poster, so I hope I get this right. I'm the guy in the Roswell video from Wasilla, although I didn't move to Roswell, but to Medanales, NM. Got to Roswell about 5:00 AM yesterday and ended up #8 in line. Chuck and Sally Heath lived about 2 houses away from us for many years and both our kids had classes with him. Our son was playing in the yard one day with a classmate who introduced himself. Track was his name. A few minutes later a women pulled into the driveway to check up on Track and also made some wonderful comments about my son. It took me a minute to realize who she was.
So it was real nice to see Sarah and her parents yesterday.
Ourside of my immediate family, there is no one else I would stand out in the cold for 12 hours just to see.
Tony

I know HAL is going to make an appearance and maybe some more of you guys. I can't wait for the write up on her speech tonight. Truthfully, I know this is small potatoes, but I want to know what kind of dress she wears to the Gridiron dinner ;) Actually, I'm more stoked for her speech. I'm loving ever minute of this Palin overdose! Off to take a final: Secured Transactions. Don't ask. Bottom line: last final of law school. I gradumacatin' next week. Sorry folks, but there's going to be another lawyer in this world....

Just please dont work for the ACLU.

A bit off-topic, but would the adults on this site (assuming there's any haha) please let teens know of Teens 4 Palin. As admin I really need to advertise the site, trying to help fellow admin Lee. It's really not possibly in my area in which I live, but I'm hoping y'all might spread it around. Here's a flyer for it.

do any pictures exist of Sarah saluting while CiC of the AKNG ? I don't know if Governors do that.

earlier on this thread was a pic of Sarah with hand on chest and three Army guys saluting, the flag I assume.

hoo-boy would I like to see this lady return a salute from her Army. I'm sure it would look better than momma jean's salute

Emily B. (Jane Austen), December 2, 2009 5:50 PM

I honestly have no words.

Kjanlady, December 2, 2009 5:50 PM

And where have you been Jane Austen. We've missed you.

CruelaDev, December 2, 2009 5:54 PM

I doubt it is even that big...

In light of the Job Summit tomorrow at the White House, I thought I would share this:

Teaching Math in the 1960's
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math in the 1970's
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math in the 1980's
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math in the 1990's
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's okay).

Teaching Math in 2009
Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

No laptop for two weeks. Need I to say more? ;)

Emily B. (Jane Austen), December 2, 2009 6:00 PM

Our math is more like, oh, you must know this because it's on the standardized test. Everything that is taught nowadays has to do with standardized testing, not actually useful stuff.

A healthy dose of Rush Limbaugh counteracts the mental instability contracted from prolonged exposure in public schools.

Ted Torgerson, December 2, 2009 6:24 PM

Congratulations! It's been 20 years but I remember my Secured Transactions class pretty well. My professor was a former repo man. He had some great stories that tied into how the UCC worked in practice. Great stuff.

I just not got the chance to watch the videos from Missouri. I'm excited for all of those who got their books signed, but I wish the abbreviation of IL instead of MO was after "Springfield".

Kjanlady, December 2, 2009 6:46 PM

The BBPA (Bowling Proprieter's Association of America) announced today that President Palin (I mean Governor Palin) will be the keynote speaker at the International Bowl Expo in Las Vegas on June 30, 2010. The event spokesman felt confident that Sarah is a much better bowler than Obama.

I wonder if Sarah just might make this a campaign stop for the conservative challenger to Harry Reid's senate seat...can't remember his name.

DefCon66, December 2, 2009 6:46 PM

Here's a gorgeous video of Sarah that you all may enjoy. VIEWER WARNING: Have a box of tissues for the uncontrolled weeping. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-G2n91wKtY

DefCon66, December 2, 2009 6:52 PM

In my opinion your assumption is correct.

lmg, December 2, 2009 6:54 PM

So basically she cut off his Legs?

AmeriCuda, December 2, 2009 6:56 PM

Awesome. That video has my tear ducts on def-con 4, for the rest of the night.
You brought some game to this thread DefCon, thanks!

DefCon66, December 2, 2009 7:01 PM

Your welcome but I just found it that's all, wish I could do more. It blindsided me in more ways than one, not only stirring patriotism in me and the love of Sarah but a deep longing to go back to Alaska.

cookboy, December 2, 2009 7:01 PM

From all accounts, his speech was #2.

We all know the real meaning of SOL.

juju, December 2, 2009 7:33 PM

OHHH MYYYY pass the tissue please. Great Video...maybe the best I've seen...the most moving I have seen for sure.

lmg, December 2, 2009 7:39 PM

She has a plan. We'll see it unfold. And we'll be there when she needs us.

terri, December 2, 2009 7:55 PM

That video was made by one of our posters here. I must watch every couple of days or so...:-)

yogi41, December 2, 2009 8:21 PM

Yes, was it was. Was her name Irma? I remember when she posted it here and many of us loved it, but then someone posted that we should stop posting those types of videos on this site, as it seemed too over-the-top in adulation. I remember loving that video and saying so, but I noticed that she (Irma?) stopped posting here after that. I wish she'd come back and I wish she'd continue to make "those type" of videos.

Emily B. (Jane Austen), December 2, 2009 8:34 PM

I have no idea but that is priceless...of course AP gets the shot. It's funny though! LOL

Thanks for the post, I saw that video. Welcome to c4p

Yes, I was at the Roswell signing...and what a day it was...but I found there has been a common thread that have ran through each long line in each city ...It is the people that stand there...as in many of the cities it was cold had snowed the night before in Roswell...but everyone was up beat...taking care of each other...I had forgot to bring gloves "someone gave me a pair...did not have a chair to sit in "someone gave me one... There were about 1500 people (as told to me by others and as I saw a line that went thrugh the field all the way to the road) out of all these people there were only 2 problems...1 out side someone trying to cut in line...the other inside the store and that one I was in ...I was taking pictures of the book dispaly and people buying the book and a man was checking out and he started "why are you Palin people buying you cannot read and a-lot of other really junk stuff...I did my best to keep my mouth closed...but when he told me and another lady that had come into the store not to let the door hit use in the A** on our way out...(store people took care of him ...also found out he was a lawyer in Roswell...he was doing the HuffPost talking points)...

I got to know the one of the governorn's top security people he was so nice (I am in Hasting a-lot) as he also saw that the people (worker) knew me ...I did a-lot of cutting up with him...so nice all these people...

About Half freezen (been sick with a cold since) had w/band was in the store waiting...then the moment was there Sarah Palin was in the building...first we saw Trig with a lady then her mom, dad, and aunt...we could not see her ...but then there she was so small but such a gaint...My time infront of her is runs like a fast movie in my mind...she ask me my name...I told her about in 1974 being the first women to be hired by a major oil company to work as a "Roustabout" she wanted to hear more but the line needed to move so I told that left her an env. with all the information she ask me what color the Env. was ...then it was over...

I was very lucky to spend some time with her mother also meet her dad and aunt...you just did not want to leave...but there comes a time about 7:45 was that time ...I walked over to the sercuity person I had been joking around with all day and thank him for beiing so nice...(He knew I really want to get a picture of her as I had said it over and over that day)...He ask was I happy "yes I was happy still wanted a picture of her but I understood...wow at that point he said following me...and I did behind and pass all the books and shelves ... to within 6 feet of her...he told me to take my picture ...he called out governor Palin and she look right at me ...I took 2 really good pictures...then he let me meet Trig was not allowed to take a picture...(I sent the pictures to C4P) But if you want to see them they are on thepalination.com ...and my FaceBook...I then went home with a day I will always remember...

I arrived at Hastings bookstore at 7 A.M. in Roswell NM (by the way I live in Roswell). There were about 13 people there; I became number 14 in line. By the time 5 o’clock rolled around there was over a 1000 people. I know that she came from AR. by plane, do not know how she got from the airport as they had already taken some of us into the store. But I can tell you that when she came into the store the place went wild. Her mother, daddy, Trig and her aunt were with her.

I did get to speak with her as she signed my book, told her I had been the first woman hired by a major oil company and she said “wow”. I was able to talk with her mother and aunt; all in all it was a great day and a cold day as it was snowing in Roswell.

Oh, during day I went in and out of the store and met some of [...]
