Gov. Palin and God in Going Rogue
“And I do know there is a God. My life is in His Hands. I encourage readers to do what I did many years ago, invite Him in to take over … then see what He will do and how He will get you through. Test Him on this. You’ll see there’s no such thing as a coincidence.” –Sarah Palin, Going Rogue, p. 413
Here’s a question I get quite often regarding my support of Gov. Palin and my writing at C4P: “How can you, of all people, support Sarah Palin?”
I’m not a religious man – not even in the metaphysical ballpark that some people like to refer to as “spiritual” - and long before Going Rogue was published, it was clear that Sarah Palin is indeed a religious woman. Reading Going Rogue, even the casual, non-critical reader can identify five themes that drive Gov. Palin’s narrative and thus, her life: her love of God, family, Alaska/country, work and running, probably in that order of importance. Show me a person who has at least three of these personal qualities, and I’ll show you an incredibly decent human being.
Rush Limbaugh referred to Going Rogue as, (I paraphrase), an impressive policy book. A religious friend I have who read the book referred to it as a testimonial. Neither summation is inaccurate or unfair.
There is an implied elitism when asking a person who is not spiritual or religious how they can so staunchly support a person who is. The so-called “neo-atheists” (or – shudder – “Brights”) have hardened the sense believers – the majority of the country and most of humanity - have that secular types like myself not only view them as stupid, but backward and naïve, gullible and easily manipulated. Having read all the neo-atheist texts that have sat on the best-seller lists for several years, I shudder to think of the damage that has been done to the perception of those of us who prefer to believe what we believe while allowing everyone else to do the same.
I love the work of Ayn Rand, but her announcement to William F. Buckley the first time she met him that “you’re much too smart to believe in God” pretty much sums up the overwhelming sense of the believer that skeptics are unrepentant snobs, whatever their political affiliation. Aside from being rude, questioning the intelligence of more than 90 percent of humanity against your own worldview is unproductive and silly.
For me, my comfort with Gov. Palin’s beliefs and her openness in discussing them is simple: I grew up in a small Southern Baptist church in the so-called buckle of the Bible Belt, and listening to people talk about their relationship with God, about how they’re praying for you, about how God has a purpose for you is as natural as talking about college football – whether you believe or don’t believe, if you’re from relatively rural places like southern Oklahoma, you don’t have to join them but only a fool would try to “beat” them. Where I come from, a prayer still comes out of the PA system before high school football games begin and, like Gov. Palin, most high school athletes belong to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A person telling me they’re praying for me is neither odd nor offensive. In her acknowledgements, Gov. Palin makes a reference to “prayer warriors,” a term that will probably mystify nonreligious people who live on the coasts while being a term I’ve been familiar with since I was a child.
I’m not uncommon in this regard. I’ve read the KJV Holy Bible multiple times, have studied it inside and out, and like anyone else familiar with the most influential text ever codified, I too have my favorite verses (outside the Pslams and Proverbs, mine happens to be John 10:10).
In short, I believe as the Founders believed: we have three inalienable rights and one of those is the pursuit of happiness, and happiness is not merely the giddiness of a surprise birthday party in one's honor, it is the freedom to seek out the wisdom of those who came before us. It is a condition of mankind that individuals seek the Truth, and each of us find it in our own way in our own time.
Like the metanoia of Saul of Tarsus, some people don’t find this Truth so much as it hits them like a cast iron frying pan to the face, what many a recovering alcoholic refers to as “a moment of clarity.” Others are seemingly born having an idea of the universal truth that guides them, and they rarely waver from it throughout their life. If Gov. Palin believes that God has a plan for her life, that’s good enough for me. Like Gov. Palin, my mother is such a person – she was effectively born into a Christian home, became a Christian, raised her children as Christians and will someday die a Christian. This set of circumstances is reflected in most of the people born and raised in Oklahoma.
When I consider the positive role of religion in so many people’s lives, I think of Pres. Bush (43), a man whose legacy will be redeemed way down the line and a man who, though I disagreed with him on many things, I considered to be one of the most morally decent men to ever hold office. Like Gov. Palin, he endured the graceless mocking of his faith and his intelligence, and like Gov. Palin, he took it in stride.
Gov. Palin’s openness about her religious faith isn’t a “turn-off” for me – I want leaders who are honest about who they are, where they come from, what drives them and, when all bets are off, what it is they turn to when metaphysical solace is the last resort. More than anything, I want to know they have a philosophical grounding and an ethical code that guides them.
Going Rogue is full of such testimony, and it is a primer on how a politician can write about her belief in God and their Christian faith without it being couched in caveats and apology.

Thank you for this article.
As one who shares Sarah's faith in God and a fellow Oklahoman I want to thank you for this honest and insightful article. I truly appreciate your perspective.
thank you for this morning post.
What a great way to start the day on the left coast.
We are here because God brought us together. It is not a coincidence.
Great article :)
Well said - thanks for this post. I think you summed it up, for me anyway, with this: "More than anything, I want to know they have a philosophical grounding and an ethical code that guides them."
I'm in total agreement. Excellent article!
Thank you for this post!!
Excellent perspective Creede. Like you, I'm not what one would consider a religious person. I think what sets those like you and I apart from those like Chris Mathews is that we are not uncomfortable or somehow threatened by those who are (religious). Liberals are threatened by people's beliefs, especially when they don't conform to their own. This is why they ridicule those like Governor Palin who are comfortable enough in their own skin to express their spiritual beliefs publicly. As you say, everyone is free to pursue their own happiness, whether religious or other. Great post.
"I considered [Bush] to be one of the most morally decent men to ever hold office. Like Gov. Palin, he endured the graceless mocking of his faith and his intelligence, and like Gov. Palin, he took it in stride."
I agree to some extent, but "taking it in stride" didn't cut it, and won't anymore -- not in this era of leftist ascendance. Bush was a wholesale failure in responding to or even acknowledging the assaults of the Left, which were not only aimed at hm but at the very tissue of our democratic comity. Bush's passivity in the face of the attacks on him, his office, and America was a serious dereliction of duty which only inspired and fortified the Left. He let us down, and for this we have suffered. While I am a true admirer of Sarah Palin, I do confess to some concern over what may be similar qualities of political tolerance, that is, her unwillingness to strike back (in her own style) at the Leftist enterprise. I see this as a possible consequence of strong personal faith -- not useful to a cause which needs more actual warriors than prayer warriors. I was heartened to read in her book that she'd become acquainted with David Horowitz, who has spent his life fighting back at the Left. I hope she develops more "bite" to balance her unquestionable grace.

Gov. Palin's openness about her religious faith isn't a "turn-off" for me--I want leaders who are honest about who they are, where they come from, what drives them and, when all bets are off, what it is they turn to when metahysical solace is the last resort. More than anything, I want to know they have a philosophical grounding and an ethical code that guides them.
I second that. I think there are many people who feel uncomfortable, or 'turned-off' by those who are open about their faith and even more so when they happen to be political leaders. I think there's a fear that they will try to legislate their beliefs on society. That's not a completely groundless fear as some leaders in the past ( and in the present; see Huckabee re: clemency) inappropriately blurred their religous beliefs with their political responsibilities. Ironically, secular liberals are doing that with the Global Warming issue. They're foisting their "beliefs" onto the greater public and they totally miss the irony when they accuse people like Palin or GWB for "pushing" their religous beliefs.
I'm neither turned off by Palin's religious views nor am I worried she will improperly mix religion and legislation. One, because I'm not threatened by another's religious views, and two, because Palin shows no sign of legislating her beliefs. I know this because as Gov. she administered that state pragmatically and made decisions founded on what was best for her "bosses" and not her personal beliefs (see: veto denying same sex benefits and appointing pro-choice judge) When given the tools of power she did not abuse them. We need more people like Palin serving in the government.
I hear you on Bush. He needed to defend himself more, but do not worry about Sarah, she won't take any garbage, but of course one has to pick your battles. You can't be in scorched earth mode every day, though sometimes I feel that way myself.
It's all about God! It doesn't matter whether one believes is Him or not. He believes in you, in all of us. "Thy Will Be Done" has been my solid belief for almost 2 years now.... And wow, what a 2 years it has been. I've rediscovered myself, America, freedom, founding principles and also I have discovered Sarah Palin and tea parties. (Aswellas C4P)
And my daily, hourly mantra is "Hallelujah" (praised be to God) I feel so blessed to be witnessing these incredible times we live.
GOODWILL TO ALL!
I should've typed: ...made decisions founded on what was best for her "bosses" and not solely on her personal beliefs. Clearly, politicians made decisions based on their own philosphical and moral beliefs. What Palin doesn't do is ignore the law or the public's will when it conflicts with her personal beliefs.
Great article and thanks.
I'm here to tell ya though, her mentioning "Man's fallen nature" is driving them <span>NUTS</span> , and it may be the most courageous statement Sarah of AK's made yet. To them we're "perfectable" (or they are) and they're just the ones to do it. This is the epicenter of the Culture Wars (Culture of Life vs. Death). They try to perfect the "species" and end up slaughtering millions in the process like clockwork.
If we have a fallen nature, all their utopian social engineering is waisted effort. This is the hot button of hot button issues and she knows it. She's also right! As Chesterton said, modern, "scientific" society denies man's fallen nature although it's the most easily scientifically provable Christian doctrine.
This goes for their jugular.
Thanks for this perspective, Brooks! I've felt that the Governor's introduction of Michael Reagan has always summed things up well when she said, " It is God we trust; it is not in big government that we trust".God guides her personally, but she does not act as the American government must be a Christian theocracy. She recognizes the falleness of mankind. the free will that God has given, and the redemption of Christ. It is her foundation.
She is unabased of her faith. She realizes that we as Christians are to be the light of the world, but in doing so we are not to "blind" people. I've always greatly appreciate her strong and bold faith in her words and her deeds. She also does so in her clothing. I've seen more pictures of her with THE hat. Not only is the hat and coat she is wearing awesome, she is proudly wearing cross earrings and a cross necklace. :)
Fantastic article.
Sarah is simply exciting, and part of that is, yes, her good looks.
But that pales in comparison to the light that shines from her, when she looks in the camera it's a knock-out punch to political correctness.<span> </span>
SARAH on the Bob and Mark Show.. right now!
The section about her faith is my favorite part of "Going Rogue."
Thank you for this post! Great writing again!
John 10:10 is a wonderful verse.
And they are "thieves" in every conceivable way.
I ordered a signed book through the Sarahpac special donation book deal and printed off the reciept. Normally when you donate to Sarahpac you get an e-mail from them. I have recieved no e-mail or book. Has anyone that did the special recieved their book or an e-mail?
I remember reading that paragraph in the book and I got goosebumps and an overwhelming sense of appreciation.
Then I read that paragraph again and the same feeling took over.
I am listening to Sarah right now on "Going Rogue:audio version" and I can listen to this woman speak for hours.
I am on disk 3 and Sarah is discussing with Todd that Trig will be born with Downs and Sarah asks : "why us" and Todd responds back. "why not us"? WHAT A MAN!!
I wish I had the chance to shake this man's hand during the booktour.
Thanks for this post. It was a great read. Gov. Palin's congruence is so admirable, she lives what she believes.
Thank you, CBK! A number of my friends are atheists but they go apoplectic during discussions of religion and faith. Indeed they are intolerant, closed-minded, and regard themselves as intellectually superior...but they are all equally convinced of manmade global warming! I appreciate your perspective.
johnmd, ditto. Made the donation, it showed up on my credit card statement, but haven't received anything from SarahPAC yet, e-mail or otherwise. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same thing.
In sort of the same vein, but probably O/T, a friend just sent me this link to a short 2 min. video. It's good to stop, take a breath now and then, and just reflect on the beauty and promise of America.

Yup.
Sarah Palin’s Copenhagen-Bashing Op-Ed One Of Most Read WaPo Opinion Pieces Of The Year
Here’s a dispiriting postscript to the massive flap over The Washington Post’s decision to publish an <span>Op ed</span> by <span>Sarah Palin</span> on climate change, a piece that has been widely criticized as riddled with falsehoods.
I’m told by the paper’s insiders that her piece was one of the most-read WaPo opinion pieces of the year, coming in 21st in page views out of literally hundreds of opinion articles. An <span>earlier Palin Op ed</span> in the paper on the same topic was the third most read of the year.
A lot of this is probably driven by heavy outside linkage. But still, the fact that Sarah Palin, of all people, is able to command such attention for her views on the science of climate change, of all things, is kind of amazing.
To be clear, I’m not defending the decision to run the piece. I wouldn’t have run it. I’m just pointing out the undeniable fact that the woman’s name gets people clicking. Until people stop clicking, Palin and her views will continue to get attention.
I liked that part too. Like my pregnant sis recently responded when her OBGYN asked her if she wanted to do the test to see if her baby had Down Syndrome: "What for? I want this baby, whether he has Downs, Autism, or completely healthy." Her husband is amazing about it too. Every life is precious.
We're going to MAKE them hear us. Hearing HER, they're hearing US.
"a piece that has been widely criticized as riddled with falsehoods."
What were the falsehoods? What was one falsehood?
I recevied an email but waiting on the book.
A wonderful example of reasoned thought and human understanding, Brooks. I have formed my own "spirituality" over 62 years that relies on no organized religion. I find Gov. Palin an extraordinary person whose religious belief only enhances her understanding of our Constitutional republic. Both Gov. Palin and Ayn Rand share a love of freedom and liberty from opposite ends of the theological spectrum. This bond is stronger than their differences. Differing beliefs that show respect for others freedoms while sharing basic human values is a fine state of being. Proselytizing can be tiresome and Gov. Palin does none of this. She leads and informs by example and makes us all better people for it. Thanks, Brooks!
Sarah's Next book should be about Climate Change, and Energy independnece imo. Energy is her issue.
<span>I recevied an email with a transaction ID number for the donation. Waiting on the book.</span>
Hopefully POLITICAL Climate Change GOVERNMENT independence.
<span>Hopefully POLITICAL Climate Change and GOVERNMENT independence.</span>
Great perspective!
I think you hinted at something that really differentiates liberals from conservatives. I feel that at the core of liberalism is an unhappiness and anger. With the individual themselves, with the exceptionalism of the US, etc. So when a liberal atheist sees someone who is so confidently happy because of their belief in a higher power, their own insecurities and anger are exposed. To compensate they try to belittle the believer, call them names, and insult their intelligence.
On the other hand a conservative, like yourself, is able to see the big picture and recognize religious faith is not what makes you happy, but is perfectly normal for someone else.
Hell yeah!
Like Brianus wrote about on the open thread today.
As the cheerleaders used to say "They suck, they suck, they know they suck!"
Latinchic,
21 years ago my cousin said the same thing to her doctor and declined amnio testing. She was 41 having her 5th child. Her son was born without any special needs but for 9 months she said he would be a blessing just by being born. He has since grown to be 2.05 meters tall and faces challenges on a daily basis but is our 'gentle giant' whom we all love. He is currently training to teach primary school kids (or kindy to year 6) so that should be interesting because those kindy kids are so little. Every life is precious and has a purpose. The Word of God tells us we are made in His image so we must ALL be perfect in His eyes.
Best wishes for a happy and joyful Christmas. I love Christmas. I always feel like a Re-born again Christian at this time of year when we celebrate the birth of Christianity.
Joy to the world...
Hark the Herald...
Growing up a Catholic I never understood "religion" especially the rituals. I didn't understand Why? we had to do such things. "Religion" turned me off it left me empty, execpt I had a hunger and a thirst in me that I couldn't quench, I was seeking God, Not a "religion" full of rituals. God works in ways that only until you experience it, will you know how He has worked in your life. Sometimes He brings people into your life, your path, to lead you to Him. Because He knows your heart and He wants to have a relationship with you. That is what God did for me. I was saved many years ago and those who know what I am talking about will understand.
Many people have come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord because of Sarah Palin.
I thank God for Sarah Palin everyday because she is not afraid to say who she believes in, The Creator of our Universe, the God of Heaven and Earth, the Alpah and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.
Praise God the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit for the many blessings He bestows on us everyday.
Blessings, Irma
Prayer Warriors for Sarah Palin
A person telling me they’re praying for me is neither odd nor offensive.
I have to be honest and admit that I've never understood why so many atheists seem so angry about religion. Too many seem to think that religious beliefs have to be denigrated and ridiculed. How can it hurt even an atheist to have someone else praying for them? Don't atheists ever consider that they "just might be wrong" about the existance of God and having someone "putting in a good word for them" just might be a good thing?
I can understand being uncomfortable about strong evangelizing but Sarah Palin appears to be just person who lives her faith and doesn't try to force anyone else to believe.
Amen! I add my "Hallelujah" to yours!
I didn't do the special signed book deal, but I made a contribution in the last week and there was no email. It was deducted from my account, however. Must be something going on with the email--maybe too many donations have caused system problems. How awesome would that be!!!
Wonderful post!
As a woman of like faith, I am so very inspired and refreshed by Governor Palin's strong Christian walk. She is unashamed, unapologetic, and unmoved when the attacks on her faith come. I love that! She doesn't push Christ on anyone publicly, but she doesn't have to. He leaks from her!
CBK,
This is a careful, caring and insightful post. Any of us who have lived with others not like us, for me in academia as well as living in another culture for almost a decade, can either decide to dismiss the "unlike" or learn and be enriched by it. The fatal, suffocating flaw is to think that all knowledge and value resides in the little, original package most of us grow up in. What a small world to live in. Thanks for pointing this out with such grace.
Amen, Amen, Amen!
This is a great article.
CBK, you always seem to get bumped quickly after posting. The magnitude of comments does not reflect the depth and wisdom of your words.
Thank you.<span> </span>
I thought the offer expired on Nov. 25th, but I did notice still on the SarahPAC page.
She commands attention and she knows how to use her power.
I think it should be about Energy Independence and why ANWR should be open.
Thank you for this article. I am not a religious person either, so I would get the same reaction you get. I get lots of crazy reactions when I express that I love Sarah Palin because I live in California. I understand her strong faith in God is what guides her. I do believe her when she said that she puts her life in God's hands and that He has plans for her. I love one of the quotes/prayer in her book also. When I feel depressed about something, I think of that line. It is very beautiful. This woman has the gift to inspire.
