Governor Palin's Gridiron Speech

Last night, as everyone knows, Governor Palin gave a speech to the Gridiron Club in Washington. Greta Van Susteren managed to obtain the text of her speech. Below is an excerpt:

Good evening. It’s great to be in Washington and I am loving the weather. I braved the elements and went out for a jog! Or, as Newsweek calls it, a cover-shoot. It’s a privilege to be here tonight at the Washington DC Barnes & Noble. Tonight, I'll be reading excerpts from my new book. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? “Going Rogue”

Yukon wasn’t sure if I’d go with that title and somebody suggested I follow the East Coast selfhelp trend and go with, “How To Look Like A Million Bucks…For Only 150 Grand.” Todd liked, “The Audacity of North Slope.” Hey, I considered not having a title at all. I’ve said it before, but you Beltway types just don’t seem to get it. You don’t need a title to make an impact.

But anyway, let’s get started. I’ll begin my first reading on Page 209.
It was pitch black when we touched down in Arizona late on August 27, 2008. The next morning we drove to John McCain’s ranch in Sedona. John was waiting on the porch. Before he can say a word, I tell him, I'm quoting now. I know why I’m here, and I’m ready. But, I'm worried. The cost of credit protection for the largest U.S. banks is rising precipitously. Have you given any thought to the run on the entities in the parallel banking system? Do you realize the vulnerability created when these institutions borrow short term in liquid markets to invest long term in illiquid assets? John said, “you betcha!” I thought, “you betcha?” Who talks that way?

Well, sometimes you just have to trust your instincts. When you don’t, you end up in places like this. Who would have guessed that I’d be palling around with this group? At least now I can put a face to all the newspapers I read. It is good to be here and in front of this audience of leading journalists and intellectuals. Or, as I call it, a death panel.

To be honest, I had some serious reservations about coming to visit your cozy little club. The Gridiron still hasn’t offered membership to anyone from my hometown paper in Wasilla, the Matanuska-Susitna Valley Frontiersman. And my dad thought it was just a plain bad idea to leave the book tour for some football game. He might have a point!

I’ve been touring this great, great land of ours over the last few weeks. I have to say, the view is much better from inside the bus, than under it! But really, I am thrilled to be with you. And I’d like to thank the Gridiron for the invitation and Dick Cooper for his introduction. To paraphrase John F. Kennedy, this has to be the most extraordinary collection of people who have gathered to viciously attack me since the last corporate gathering at CBS.

Read the whole speech here.

What's the difference between a hockey mom and David Letterman?

Clean humor and funny joke delivery.

CruelaDev,  December 6, 2009 5:35 PM

It wasn't funny... she had her ghost writer write it and her ghost speaker deliver it!
It was not even her on that stage.. Smoke and Mirrors My friends.. Smoke and Mirrors!
It wasn't funny.. Now Barney's was a laugh riot!
That man can deliver!  OMG.. He is AWESOME!

tim c,  December 6, 2009 5:36 PM

Nothing but net! They must really be getting scared now!

GAHanson,  December 6, 2009 5:36 PM

I bet her delivery was flawless, and no need for a teleprompter either.

Too bad there isn't a video.  Haven't seen a whole lot of coverage of the event so you know it went well for her.

I hear that the book signing in Sioux City Iowa started an hour late because of Gov. Palin's visit to Walter Reed Army Hospital lasted longer than expected.  Still haven't seen any account of how that went.

Andrew,  December 6, 2009 5:36 PM

I posted this in the open thread:

<span>You know, I'm starting to believe liberals are onto something.  They keep saying "Palin didn't write that!"  And I think they're right.  Palin didn't write her speech / jokes last night...

Ronald Reagan's spirit did.</span>

Andrew,  December 6, 2009 5:43 PM

Like someone brought up in another thread, there are some jokes missing from this transcript.  So if this is indeed most of her remarks, it's likely a version she went in with before she improvised.

I.e., the joke about seeing the Russian Embassy is missing, as is the comment about her parents crashing, and not treating them like the Salahi's.

Deidre,  December 6, 2009 5:47 PM

I would have loved to hear her sing part of the 12 days of Christmas from Rush :)

eclecticak,  December 6, 2009 5:48 PM

I was 'jest' thinking the same.... Hmmmmm?!?!

And then Palin joned the chorus for the final line:
“Right next to the mashed potatoes,” she sang.

Whitney,  December 6, 2009 5:57 PM

Does anyone know if the Perky One or Charles Gibson was there?

manajordan,  December 6, 2009 6:00 PM

Governor Palin, a happy warrior. It seems like she enjoyed herself. The jokes were great! I particularly enjoyed the digs at the media. Perhaps the media are realizing that though they act like Piranha and get into a feeding frenzy with every whisper of the name Sarah Palin, they actually don't have any teeth when it comes to her. Their attacks probably just tickle.

Lakerfanalways,  December 6, 2009 6:04 PM

Her speech last night was PERFECT. I was laughing my butt off last night reading what she said..the Obama and the Communist joke was PRICELESS, and Going Rogaine..I know who came up with that joke, a fellow freeper(on Freerepublic) who passed it on to someone else to tell her at the Virginia book signing, she said she would use it..how awesome is that..poor Plugs Biden, the butt of jokes

Move over!

terri,  December 6, 2009 6:05 PM

Sheya,

Thanks AGAIN for the vidoes. :-)

It's weird though, even though Cameron is almost "giddy" talking about Sarah and the book tour/campaign trail....I just can't forget when Cameron and BOR were talking about Sarah being a diva and such last election.
If I remember correctly, Cameron was just as "giddy" then.

wisetrog,  December 6, 2009 6:06 PM

Why happened to creepy Cameron?

Zephyr,  December 6, 2009 6:08 PM

I just can't bring myself to forgive Cameron yet.  I always remember that smirky smile on his face tearing her down.

wisetrog,  December 6, 2009 6:12 PM

They are seeing which way the wind blows and they want to jump on the bandwagon before its too late.

Mia,  December 6, 2009 6:13 PM

AGREED!!!...I only watched it...because... Sheya put it up...
Otherwise...Camie is Morto..

hrh,  December 6, 2009 6:14 PM

According to this full write-up from Lynn Sweet

http://www.politicsdaily.com/2009/12/06/sarah-palin-mocks-self-journalists-at-gridiron-dinner/

Sarah enlisted a former speech writer for Al Gore who speciallizes in political humor ... Egads, I bet the writer much prefers having Sarah give lines than Gore ...

Sheya,  December 6, 2009 6:19 PM

O/T, Well not really after the song the Governor did last night
I came across this clip on my PC from back in 2007, it’s a nice presentation of all (at the time) Foxnews anchors and presenters doing their version of  “Twas the night before Christmas Poem”

Enjoy

terri,  December 6, 2009 6:21 PM

hrh....

Can you even imagine writing a "political humor" speech for Al Gore?!?!?!?!

I think I'd rather have a root canal..lol

Mia,  December 6, 2009 6:21 PM

LOL!...hrh!...O'GorBore is Green...

Emily (Jane Austen),  December 6, 2009 6:25 PM

Where's riley? I want his "Sarah Palin's 12 Days of Christmas". Nice video though Sheya. :)

Sheya,  December 6, 2009 6:25 PM

Ever since that segment Cameron has been going out of his way to be supportive of the Governor I think he really likes her. Also he did a live apology and so did O’Reilly.

CruelaDev,  December 6, 2009 6:29 PM

Al Gore Joke..I wold write for him....
I'm a little tea pot short and STOUT...here is my hand out...here is my snout!

debtstar,  December 6, 2009 6:30 PM

I love " “you betcha?” Who talks that way? " and "I thought they were asking a question."

terri,  December 6, 2009 6:31 PM

^^^^^Sheya,  He did?......Do you have the video to that cuz I don't remember that and I kind of find that hard to believe, especially the BOR part.

CruelaDev,  December 6, 2009 6:31 PM

<span>Al Gore Joke..I would write for him....
I'm a little green tea pot short and STOUT...here is my hand out...here is my SNOUT!</span>

panchita,  December 6, 2009 6:37 PM

Tahnks again for the vidsSheya. Smarmy carl cameron looked like he was really pumped, even exclaimed you betcha at the end of the first interview. Palinistas have a long memory and remember him breathlessly passing on gossip that Sarah came out to greet her aides in a bathrobe.

yogi41,  December 6, 2009 6:37 PM

I don't recall him apologizing, but I do remember Greta tearing into Bill O'Reilly on his radio show and his television show for allowing Carl to run with the story without fact-checking it. I remember Greta said she talked to Carl and he admitted he didn't second-source it. If he apologized on-air, I would love to see it.

terri,  December 6, 2009 6:42 PM

Sheya,
That was pretty cute...;-)

That Alan Colmes...geeez, I thought liberals were supposed to be all warm and fuzzy.
Talk about cold, he read that like he'd never heard it before.   lol

Bill in Baltimore,  December 6, 2009 6:46 PM

doing a little touch-up painting. Opened the Wash Times to lay down for floor cover.

Guess what I opened to ?

FULL PAGE ad from Newsmax, about 1/3 of the page was the cover of Going Rogue !

Sheya,  December 6, 2009 6:47 PM

I’ll see if I can find it, it was pre my proper indexing days but I’ll see if a can find it. It was a whole segment on the Factor O’Reilly and Cameron. They were discussing the error, O’Reilly explained how it was a big story and they had the information form prominent people inside the campaign, I remember O’Reilly saying “We got it wrong and for that we apologize and we’ll do better in the future” or something like that.

Cameron also said he got it wrong and they were discussing how in this day in age everyone in the media wants to be the first to break a story which results in embarrassing situations like that. If I’m not mistaken at the time one of the Fox anchors said that because of that mess up Fox changed their internal rules from a “get it first” policy to a “get it right” policy.

Ever since O’Reilly and Cameron have always covered Governor Palin positively and always stand up for her.

Bill in Baltimore,  December 6, 2009 6:49 PM

still can't participate, big weekend coming up (Army / Navy), bit honey-do list.

but if anyone missed my write-up of the Fairfax book signing, here it is.

I add a little commentary about Barack, key line = "Barack is a puppet>

Deidre,  December 6, 2009 6:49 PM

Ok guys, help here.  I need help here.  I want to think of something witty to tell the Guv for all 15 seconds I get to meet with her tomorrow.......any suggestions?

Brianus.Berkleianus,  December 6, 2009 6:50 PM

Thanks, Doug!!

With Bean Counter's wonderful news, with the Oakland Raiders' victory over the Steelers, and with this post, I am in great spirits right now.

Our Sarah has a wicked, subtle, deadly sense of humor...rapier-like, we can say.  It comes across in the book in many places; it came across last night.

These "elites" know they are in trouble...BIG TROUBLE.

Let us, however, redouble our prayer efforts for her safety and health...constant prayer and sacrifice.

From this day forward, we must, every last one of us, be her spiritual Secret Service agents!!

God bless you all!!!

Brianus

terri,  December 6, 2009 6:56 PM

^^^^^I'd love to see that if you can find it...thanks.

Up to that point in the election last year, I had always thought that Cameron was supportive of Sarah. I guess that is why I was so furious/dissapointed.
That was the first time I had ever written to BOR's show good/or bad,and threatened to quit watching his show if an apology wasn't  given.
Obviously, I wasn't the only one that did that.

I still find it hard to believe that BOR would apologize for ANYTHING. After all, he is always right and he is looking out for us.  s/

Brianus.Berkleianus,  December 6, 2009 7:00 PM

Hey, Bill,

As you know, with my family background, it's all Navy for me--still, I'm looking forward to a good game.  For the sake of the rivalry, I hate to say it, it might actually be good for Army to win!

God bless,

Brianus/Brian

<p>University of Sioux Falls student Victoria Boote claimed her place in line at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. She called herself a passionate Palin supporter.
</p><p>
</p><p>When Boote got there, though, she found Kristi Nordquist of Sioux Falls, who had already been waiting for more than an hour. Wearing her mother's fur coat, a sleeping bag and assorted layers of winter clothing, Nordquist said she had completed a final chemotherapy treatment the day after Thanksgiving. Her doctor probably would have taken a dim view of her presence outside the store if he'd known about it, she acknowledged. However, "I wanted to be here No. 1," Nordquist said.<span></span>

<span>I am here inside the Southern Hills Mall, outside of the Barnes & Noble Booksellers store where Sarah Palin is signing copies of her book, "Going Rogue." I was in the first group of media whisked away to the partitioned-off section of the bookstore, where Palin's book signing table was set up. She was sitting there, signing quickly. But I noticed she greeted everyone who came up, asking them their names, where they are from, etc. One woman told Palin she was praying for her and the book tour and Palin thanked her for the prayers, saying they were important. Another woman, who was visibly pregnant, presented her book to be signed. Palin congratulated her and asked when she was due. The woman thanked her for coming to Sioux City and told Palin she gives her hope.

I was up close for a very short time, but I talked to folks as they were leaving Barnes & Noble Booksellers. They were excited. One woman said she got to touch the baby, referring to Sarah's youngest child. I didn't see him when I was in the bookstore, but I did get a glimpse of her husband Todd. </span>

Economic boom for Sioux City.

<span>
<p>SIOUX CITY -- The Sarah Palin "Going Rogue" book signing at Barnes & Noble Booksellers on Sunday was most assuredly a media spectacle.
</p><p>News outlets included ABC National News, Fox News, Bloomberg and the BBC -- not to mention most tri-state radio, newspaper and television media outlets.
</p><p>Mele Mason, a freelance video journalist from Omaha, was on hand shooting video.
</p><p>"We're doing a piece for World Network Tonight with Barbara Pinto on Sarah Palin signing books," said Mason, who works with her brother, Matt. "It's mainly because Sioux City is one of the key stopovers for presidential hopefuls. So this is already an indication that she might be interested in running (for president)."
</p><p>The Masons were on hand for much of the morning as fans lined up outside Barnes & Noble at the Southern Hills Mall. Their shooting followed through with shooting until after the crowd had dispersed.

<span>
<p>Carl Cameron traveled to Sioux City for Fox News, arriving Saturday.
</p><p>"I got here last night," said Cameron, who said his station's primary interest lies in examining Palin's future. "I came to hear what the people have to say (about Palin)."
</p><p>A BBC video team spent more than an hour interviewing attendees for a documentary on Obama's first year in office.
</p><p>Outside, minutes before Palin arrived, the throng of journalists braved temps in the low 20s on a stage to catch a glimpse of Palin's arrival. They filled a riser with a group that numbered almost as many as the group of Palin fans gathered nearby.
</p><p>...

<span>
<p>Then the madness began as the same reporters scrambled to talk with those who had just met the former Alaska governor and had their books signed.
</p><p>"Can I talk with you?" asked Robynn Tysver, an Omaha World Herald reporter, of a Palin supporter in a red Nebraska sweatshirt. Her voice trailed off with a question about Palin's presidential electability as a horde of young people walked by.
</p><p>"There's Carl Cameron. Let's get our picture taken with him," they said.
