Jack Kelly: Palin Is Up, Obama Is Old News

Via Jack Kelly at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Sarah Palin's been on a roll since the publication of her autobiography last month. "Going Rogue" is already the second-biggest seller among nonfiction books in history (only Bill Clinton's 2004 autobiography, "My Life," sold more copies in the first month), and could be No. 1 before the end of her book tour, since her sales seem to be holding up better than his did.

The book tour itself is a cultural phenomenon. At each stop hundreds, often thousands, of people have waited hours, sometimes days, to meet her.

Could Barack Obama -- who now seems so last year -- inspire that kind of devotion today?

The turnabout in fortunes is all the more remarkable because no political figure in recent history has been subject to such vilification from our news media as Sarah Palin. No malicious rumor was too preposterous to report. No accomplishment was important enough to mention.

Meanwhile, no presidential candidate or president has received more favorable press coverage than Barack Obama.

[...]

"The press just acted like this guy walked on water," Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz said during the campaign.

That's changing, in both directions.

Sarah Palin interrupted her book tour to speak at the Gridiron Club, the biggest social event of the year for Washington journalists.

"The very fact she was willing to take the chance of appearing in a room full of her most disdainful critics is testimony to her courage," wrote Dan Thomasson of Scripps Howard. "She came away with at least a consensus of grudging admiration."

"Her appearance produced the extraordinary scene of inside-the-Beltway cynics and their significant others asking for autographs," Mr. Thomasson noted.

"Palin won the evening," conceded columnist Clarence Page.

No one is quite like Sarah America.

This reminds of The Chronicles of Narnia: "[Palin's] on the move."

While Obama has been slipping as of late, it helps to put things in perspective.

Yes, he's in the mid to high 40s in a number of recent polls. Bush was below 30 from 2006 on. He was below 40 from Katrina on. He was below 50 for close to his entire 2nd term.

So Obama has a ways to go before he slides into really bad territory.

There's no reason to think he won't still have 95% of the black vote, 65% of the hispanic vote, and still get 90% of liberals of democrats. With the demographics the way they are, that's still a pretty good place to be.

But it's still better to see him falling than rising or comfortably above 50%. What happens with health care will play a large role, as will the economy and the job market. If the economy recovers and comes back and jobs are up, he'll be in good shape. If it doesn't, and they don't, he'll be gone.

Love this cartoon at American Thinker.

Palin Going Up

I'm sorry to hear that, Jean! Gmail puts the NRCC e-mails in my spam folder, which I'm fine with. :) I'm not really sure how they got my e-mail anyway.

I don't know how to go about fixing that except maybe see if there is option to accept all mail from the SarahPac address.

It's me. :)

Palin has the natural ability to take control of situation better than anyone I've seen since Reagan.

Jack Kelly has written several very supportive columns over the last year.

Josh Painter has an excellent review of Gov. Palin's book tour on his site:

Sarah Palin's Book Tour De Force

http://texas4palin.blogspot.com/2009/12/sarah-palins-book-tour-de-force.html

I had something on Google Alerts that said that Gov. Palin's appearance on Conan didn't increase his ratings any, which is probably because it wasn't announced much in advance, plus the skit was posted on the net before the show even aired.

Good article, really good article.

But you know, the whole truth would be nice.

What image does your mind provide if someone said "Hundreds of people showed up" ?
- 200, 300 maybe ?

this line hides the truth:
"At each stop hundreds, often thousands, of people have waited hours, sometimes days, to meet her."

If an honest report wrote that line that reflected the honest-to-gosh truth, what would it be ???

PEC, December 14, 2009 2:58 PM

Honestly I think Sarah could get up to 50% of the Hispanic vote. Her values and principles are waaayyy more in line with Hispanics than Obama.

Bill in Baltimore, December 14, 2009 3:02 PM

elektra, nice to have you.

I would say you're looking good (based on your avatar), but I won't because then they'd smack me upside the head.

Whitney, December 14, 2009 3:03 PM

You raise some good points. I think perhaps we do need to occasionally take a step back and look at things. That being said, it'll be interesting to see how things progress in the next few weeks. I also wonder how many of the people who voted for Obama will be unhappy enough to vote for someone else or just to stay home.

CharterOakie, December 14, 2009 3:16 PM

With apologies to Eugene O'Neill, "Rejoicing Becomes Elektra." ; )

MarkRNY, December 14, 2009 3:17 PM

Alinski/Maoist policies aside, O's not wearing well. It was only a matter of time before Americans realized that he's the most galacticly boring guy who's ever held office--and he keeps shoving his ears in our faces 24/7. His numbers will never be high again. The best he'll ever be able to do is a very soft low, possibly mid 50's, imo--and that's if, contrary to all logic/sanity, etc., things go well. He's a dud only the media can love.

Now that Sarah woman's a thrill a minute! "What's she gonna do next?!".

Bill in Baltimore, December 14, 2009 3:28 PM

The Was will be exposed like the Tiger.

Bill in Baltimore, December 14, 2009 3:52 PM

Guys and Gals,

isn't the technology such that from the Internet, Sarah could be everywhere ?

Like a campaign stop in Cincinnati where she's talking to supporters on a high-def screen, right from her backyard in Wasilla.

And this would be interactive, like with a WebCam, Skype, or some such thing ?

I don't think Obama can retain 65% of the Hispanic vote if the economy doesn't improve.

cookboy, December 14, 2009 4:00 PM

I'd say so too, because without my glasses everybody looks great from across the street!

cookboy, December 14, 2009 4:03 PM

Bill, you're everywhere. I think she could do it!

cookboy, December 14, 2009 4:06 PM

You mean to say that most Hispanics aren't droopy eyed slack-jaws?

cookboy, December 14, 2009 4:09 PM

A whole lotta people who voted for BO aren't gonna go out and do it again. The excitement won't be there, and from knowing the BO supporters that work for me, they'd rather not be bothered.

cookboy, December 14, 2009 4:12 PM

I think it's a by product of living a life in which one actually has to take control of situations. That is the role of an executive. Which the Prez is 'posed to be. In the dream world of our founders, anyway.

Allie, December 14, 2009 5:36 PM

If she endorses Marco Rubio in Florida, she will bgoa long way in getting the Hispanic vote in Florida.

Ceejay, December 14, 2009 6:51 PM

She needs to make that endorsement , like yesterday, as Crist is ahead!

Sarah 2012!

Elektra, December 14, 2009 7:21 PM

lol ty guys. :)
