Jed Gladstein: The Palin Palimpsest
Jed Gladstein at the American Thinker has written an article today in which he argues that Governor Palin is the one candidate who can reinvigorate the Republican Party and, in so doing, renew the American people's connection with their out of touch governing class. It's a good article with a few qualifications which I'll get into momentarily. Gladstein begins his piece with the following:
Sarah Palin is an authentic American phenomenon. She resonates with a majority of the American people as authentic -- because she is authentic. She is a no-BS, stand-for-the-truth, take-a-licking-and-keep-on-ticking kind of gal. In other words, she is not like the ordinary, everyday, go-along-to-get-along professional politicians who control our national political parties. And it is precisely for that reason that she can now spearhead an American political renaissance.
Our nation has been buried for decades under political pabulum. The Democrats pretend to represent average Americans, but they are controlled by wealthy elitists who pay lip service to American values while propagating cultural Marxism in every corner of the land.
Gladstein is absolutely correct here. However, he follows with a statement that is a bit confusing:
The Republicans pretend to be the party of fiscal responsibility, but they are more comfortable outsourcing the sinews of American power than building strong the fabric of American society.
"Outsourcing the sinews of American Power" could have one of two meanings. First, given the context of fiscal responsibility, he could be decrying the fact that national Republicans have, particularly during the Bush years, been almost as bad as Democrats in running up the national debt, much of which is held by foreign countries such as China, something Governor Palin has been lamenting ever since her appearance on the national political scene. If we continue on this fiscal path, sooner or later the government will have to inflate the currency, causing a further collapse of the dollar and the serious economic repercussions associated with such a collapse. However, Gladstein could also be making a Buchananite reference to protectionism, which is the antithesis of Governor Palin's limited government philosophy. If it's the former, Gladstein makes a point, if it's the latter, he's wrong. Further on in his piece, Gladstein writes:
It would be comforting to think that an authentic American political phenomenon like Sarah Palin could spearhead a successful third-party movement. But that is wishful thinking. Were she to attempt such a thing, it would almost certainly fragment the huge centrist American vote and result in further radical left victories in the national polls. That would compound the present disaster, and tilt America inexorably in the direction of third-world status and misery.
Here Gladstein, I believe, gives too much credence to the recent meme suggesting that Governor Palin is planning a third party run in 2012. This meme has its origins in her recent interview by Lars Larson which you can listen to here. When I listened to this, I didn't see any indication at all that Governor Palin is seriously contemplating a third party run. Ed Morrissey at Hot Air has more on this here. The real meat of Gladstein's article follows:
Better to heed the words of Shakespeare, who wrote that "There is a tide in the affairs of men, which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune." For America, that means Sarah Palin and the Republican Party. Here's why and here's how:
1. The Republican Party is out, and wants in. That means it needs a champion who can generate popular enthusiasm. Sarah Palin is such a champion. Put aside the blithe criticisms of the pundits and naysayers. If an election were held today, Sarah Palin would generate a popular majority greater than the one that swept Ronald Reagan into the White House.
2. The Republican Party is chastened. Its failure under Bush to pare back the scope of federal interference in people's lives resulted in the Devil's bargain with the Democrats to expand federal involvement in mortgage lending, and that led directly to the collapse of the real estate market and then the stock market. That has taken the Republican Party down a couple of pegs, and it is now far more amenable to the common sense values that Sarah Palin embodies.
3. The Republican Party has an existing political infrastructure that can be used to facilitate a national campaign by Sarah Palin, whereas a third party candidacy would need to reinvent the wheel. Time is short, the issues are vital, and the 90% rule applies to the choice of political vehicle.
4. National campaigns require huge amounts of money. Sarah Palin can raise that money directly from the American people by way of the World Wide Web, in exactly the way Obama is alleged to have done. Millions of Americans will donate $5, $10, $20 or $100 to a political renaissance spearheaded by Sarah Palin. They will be glad to do it, because they trust her.
5. The time to begin the political renaissance is now, not in 2011 or 2012. The reason is that Sarah Palin must spearhead more than a personal, political campaign. She must spearhead a political renaissance, and that means taking over the Republican Party. To do that, she will need time and allies and money. She can raise the money, and the allies are ready to hand. But time is remorseless, and assuming power in the Republican Party will be time-consuming, so she must begin that task today.
Gladstein makes many good points but I'm uncomfortable when he decrees what she "must" do. Governor Palin has better political instincts than anyone and has always been successful when she follows those instincts, whether or not they conform to the conventional wisdom of the time. In the 2006 campaign for governor, she ran a campaign which was completely outside the box by anyone's definition and was highly successful. In 2008, conversely, she was boxed in by conventional wisdom as determined by McCain gurus such as Steve Schmidt, and the results were as unhappy as they were predictable. In short, Governor Palin knows exactly what she's doing and it's not productive to have others telling her what she "must" do. All that said, Gladstein's article is a good read. What does Gladstein mean by the term "Palimpsest"? Read the rest of his article to find out.

No one knows what Gov. Palin has in mind, but I suspect we won't be disappointed. She has real momentum now coming off of her wildly successful book signing tour, not to mention having the #1 bestseller, and her op/ed on Copenhagen. I'm sure that is just the tip of the iceberg, there are undoubtedly a lot of behind the scenes actions being taken that we can only speculate about. 2010 could very well turn out to be the Year of Sarah Palin, there is really no one standing in her way on the republican side that she cannot easily dispatch. If she wants political power half as much as we want her to want it, there will be no stopping her.
BTW, here is a MSNBC internet poll:
Should President Barack Obama boycott the Copenhagen conference, as suggested by Sarah Palin?
http://politics.newsvine.com/_question/2009/12/09/3610806-should-president-barack-obama-boycott-the-copenhagen-conference-as-suggested-by-sarah-palin
Right now it's 46.5 yes 49.6 no and 3.9 I don't know.
Notice how the split it 3 ways, but the I don't know question leans pretty close to a yes vote.
I know this was meant to be positive, but this guy is guilty of the same thing many (including myself) have been guilty of. Telling Sarah what she must do. She doesn't have to do sh#$. It is her decisions of what she will and will not do. She can move when she wants to or not move at all. This person needs to be telling her what he would do if he was her with a caveat (that all of us would have) that he couldn't get 20 people counting family at a single book signing.
PEC, you're exactly right. Everyone seems to forget at times that Sarah has a unique ability to read her own compass. I liken this situation to a personal one. There are a lot of things that I cook that my wife has never cooked, yet it doesn't stop her from occasionally trying to give me directions on how to do it better. All I have to do is look at her, and my message is clear- "I know what I'm doing, so please shut up". ;-)
MSNBC doing an internet poll by a private citizen offering her opinion on Facebook?
Has this ever happened before?
True, PEc, I think unlike most leaders and she is one, the point is we would actually feel confortable enough to give such advice, and she would be one to accept it. Since she does observe these threads on occasion.
Anytime a politician or pundit offers Sarah advice, I'm always reminded of David and Goliath. David was the one with the guts to fight Goliath while everyone else was too wimpy. Saul tries to offer David his sword and armor, and it doesn't fit him. David uses what has always worked for him, a sling and 5 stones. Sarah is a much like David. It's not that she doesn't listen to advice, but she is going to use what fits her best. She's the only one with the guts to come out to defeat Goliath!
even his brothers made fun of him . . . as did Goliath ... oops
IMHO... I'm taking Sarah's most recent answers to the question..."the republican party platform says
all the right things... " we just have to get back to living up to them", Im paraphrasing, but let's remember to take her at her own words, she's the only one that says what she means,... Bottom line, again IMHO, there is
no way in Gods creation she is even leaning the least in
the direction of a third party... Sarah already ownes the party.... Lock, stock and barrel !
Whitney,
Excellent analogy.
I trust SArah's instincts too
PLUS she has (literally) MILLIONS of hands willing to help in any way they can to further the TRUTH about this Lady. Our FUTURE PRESIDENT! yeaaaaaaaaaaap! u bettcha! ;-)
Whitney's David & Goliath analony is great. If Sarah decides that Obama is beatable in 2012; she will run (as a Republican) and she will win. Go Sarah Go!

analogy
Old Vet, haven't seen you around these parts . . . welcome ! a
- and love that avatar !
I'm NOT telling Sarah what to do but if she WERE to run for office, allow me to share a platform posted by a reader at American Thinker.
Too good not to share. :-)
"POSTED BY: JIMMY MADISON:
Here's what I would like to see Sarah Palin accomplish:
(1) Keep the Defense Department and re-organize and shrink the Departments of State, Treasury, Justice, Interior, and possibly Homeland Security;
(2) Eliminate, evicserate, obliterate, and terminate all other federal departments, agencies, administrataions, commissions, and bureaus;
(3) Propose a consitutional amendment that would limit all congressmen and senators to 12 years of service (6 terms for congressmen, 2 terms for senators);
(4) Propose a constitutional amendment that would allow Congress to meet for no more than 60 days every other year, unless a special session is necessary to consider a Declaration of War;
(5) Propose legislation that would reduce the salaries of all congressmen and senators to the fee currently paid federal district court jurors ($50 per day?), and a per diem no larger than necessary to pay for lunch at Subway and lodging at Motel 6;
(6) Propose a constitutional amendment that would limit federal spending increases to the population growth of LEGAL CITIZENS(!), except in times of war declared by Congress with a Declaration of War;
(7) Propose to repeal the 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th Amendments;
(8) Propose legislation that would re-organize the federal judiciary, with the goal being to greatly reduce the number of judges and the jurisdiction of the federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court;
(9) Propose a constitutional amendment that would abolish life-tenure for federal judges and allow all decisions by federal judges to be overturned by a 2/3 majority of the House of Representatives; and
(10) Propose a constitutional amendment that would remove any congressmen or senator dumb enough to waste taxpayer time holding hearings on the manner in which the NCAA determines eligible teams for the BCS, steroid use by major league baseball players, or swimming pool drains.
Is that too much to ask?" Naaahhh...Sarah could do in less than four years!!
Sarah could do it in less than four years. (Oops...yeesh!)
