More hot air from the left about Gov. Palin's position on climate change; Updated: More hot air

Let's start with the positive news: the left is finally moving beyond a discussion of Gov. Palin's wardrobe and is actually willing to talk about her policy positions. The bad news: they're as crap on policy as they are on trivia.

In today's Washington Post, Eugene Robinson writes about Gov. Palin's recent editorial in his paper, which dealt with climate change, the Climategate scandal and the Cop-15 Copenhagen summit. He thinks he's spotted something: Palin isn't the climate change denier that Al Gore says she is!

Good job, Eugene! I'd rate that at least a B+ for effort. Mind you: you would have scored a straight A if you had checked Gov. Palin's many previous statements on this issue, which show that she's always acknowledged the reality of climate change, while at the same time casting doubt on the Anthropogenic Global Warming theory which reduces all climate change to man's use of fossil fuels and keeping an open mind about alternative explanations, including the possibility of it being an entirely natural, cyclical phenomenon.

But wait, there is more! Robinson's also found an administrative order dated September 2007 and signed by Gov. Palin in which she announces the foundation of a Climate Change Sub-Cabinet to "advise the Office of the Governor on the preparation and implementation of an Alaska climate change strategy." Among the subjects for study and recommendation are issues like

the assembly of scientific research, modeling, and mapping information in ways that will help the public and policymakers understand the actual and projected effects of climate change in Alaska, including the time frames in which those effects are likely to take place

the potential benefits of Alaska participating in regional, national, and international climate policy agreements and greenhouse gas registries;

[and]

the opportunities for Alaska to participate in carbon-trading markets, including the offering of carbon sequestration;

"Ha! There you have it! See, see!! She's a flipflopper, a hypocrite!", the excitable Robinson seems to say: "She made any number of pragmatic, reasonable, smart decisions as governor -- and now, it seems, will be obliged to renounce them all."

Eh, no actually.

Here's the Merriam-Webster definition on the word 'advise':

1 a : to give advice to : counsel b : caution, warn c : recommend
2 : to give information or notice to : inform

To counsel, caution, and recommend, based on information. Information that, as the Administrative Order clearly states, was far from complete at the time. Which is why the order doesn't contain any hard policy prescriptions.

The most important decision she took as governor on this particular issue was indeed a "pragmatic, reasonable and smart" one, namely to seek further information on the scope of the problem, its potential ramifications and possible ways of dealing with it, before taking any action that might adversely affect Alaska's economy.

The reason Gov. Palin has called on president Obama to shun the climate summit in Copenhagen is not because she's suddenly come out as a global warming sceptic, but because the theory which underpins the package of measures being discussed there has lost its validity as a result of the Climategate scandal. Robinson dismisses the scandal as so much fluff: "Global warming is real, whatever the emails say." He's entitled to his opinion, but there are those even within the AGW camp who have looked at the mails and have drawn radically different conclusions from them.

The fact is that the scientific consensus that the UN claimed existed on the issue of man-made global warming is no longer there. In view of that fact, the sensible thing is to take a step back, look at all available facts again, and see what conclusions you might come up with. Instead of rushing to Copenhagen to sign a document based on questionable science which would carry enormous costs to US businesses and tax payers, Obama would do better to follow Gov. Palin's example on the issue: establish a sub-cabinet with the mission of advising the President on the preparation and implementation of a new American climate change strategy.

To counsel, caution, and recommend, based on actual information. Now wouldn't that be a pragmatic, reasonable and smart thing to do?

Update by Doug: Loony left internet tabloid Huffington Post provides yet more hot air today with another post promoting the anthropogenic global warming (AGW) hoax. In this latest bit of nonsense, the wacky HuffPo hilariously criticizes Governor Palin’s opposition to the scam by citing the disapproval of Palin’s position by, of all people, Governor Arnold Schwarzengger (RINO-Hollywood):

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says world policymakers do not have to choose between a clean environment and economic growth.

Schwarzengger said "we've proved that over and over again in California."

I’m not making this up, folks. When I first read this, I envisioned myself a major league baseball player standing in the batter’s box as an over-the-hill pitcher tosses a big, slow creampuff down the middle of the plate about belt high. Schwarzenegger is basically claiming that his unbelievably onerous environmental regulations have resulted in economic growth in his state, and that this has been proved “over and over again”.

Heh? The last time I checked California was an economic basket case and their unfortunate plight was caused by ridiculously high taxes and, ironically, the very regulations the “Governator” cites as “proof” that his economy is in good shape. In reality, of course, California’s economy is in shambles and businesses are literally fleeing the state. Schwarzenegger’s detachment from reality vis-à-vis the effect of his environmental regulations on his state’s economy match his detachment from reality with regard to the AGW con. His dismal approval ratings are not difficult to understand.

The cartoonish HuffPo, whose relationship with reality is as non-existent as Schwarzenegger’s, is attempting to promote the absurd meme that Governor Palin should be soliciting advice from the more sophisticated and urbane Arnold Schwarzenegger on weighty matters such as climate change. The HuffPo, predictably, has it “back-asswards”. Whether it’s managing government responsibly, or climate change, one of the two should be soliciting advice from the other…and it’s not Governor Palin.

Update II by Doug: In another article, this one in the Financial Times, Schwarzenegger bestows the following advice on America:

"America within 10 years could get 20 per cent of its power needs from renewables," he said. "We have sun, wind - you can even now get oil from algae. There is a green revolution [in California] but the whole US could be leading like that."

It might be of interest to the Governator that Alaska, under Governor Palin’s leadership, increased the amount of power it gets from renewable resources to 24% with a goal of increasing that to 50% by 2025. This is, of course, not because of the AGW hoax but rather a policy consistent with her long advocated “all-of-the-above” common sense approach to energy.

Great Post and rebuttal. Gov. Palin has a pragmatic record on environmental issues. But her heart is still in energy development and seeing this country become energy independent. So as long as she doesn't endorse any type of carbon trading scheme, I am very supportive of her positions.

KeeleyH,  December 15, 2009 12:39 PM

Al Gore is caught playing fast and loose with the facts. Even the person who provided him with the data is blasting him. More people should know about Gore's tendency to exaggerate. He is losing his credibility fast, if he hasn't already.

Inconvenient Truth for Al Gore as his North Pole sums don't add up

You expect reporters to be reasonable, pragmatic, and smart?

You ask too much.

morning joe hit job i mentioned on an earlier thread http://datechguy.wordpress.com/2009/12/15/did-you-notice-what-was-missing-from-msnbcs-hit-on-sarah-palin-this-morning/

no mention of climategate as a reason for a change in her decision.

Robinson ranks right up there with Jeanne Devon, Shannyn Moore, and the other Alaska bloggers when it comes to analytical and writing ability.  The WaPo requires him to submit his copy written in crayon because they don't trust him with anything sharper than he is, like a pencil.

manajordan,  December 15, 2009 1:05 PM

Why is this news? Gov. Palin discussed in her op-ed that she was pretty pro-active on climate change. The news media is counting on people taking their interpretation as fact, rather than people actually looking into the facts themselves.

PatrickinOH,  December 15, 2009 1:06 PM

Robinson is a race baiter, then again thats par for the course when it comes to the left

PatrickinOH,  December 15, 2009 1:07 PM

here is an interesting comment from the thread at the link that Whitney provided in the previous thread:
<span><span>http://www.politico.com/blogs/glennthrush/1209/Arnold_attacks_Palin_on_global_warming.html</span></span>
Every democrat listens to the intellectual al gore because he is an expert on global warming. Go Arnold. however, the Washington Post’s discovery that Gore’s long-concealed college transcript shows grades of “F” in five of the eight Divinity School courses he took – including an “F” in a course about science and nature? (It’s clear from his “documentary” that Gore remains an ignoramus about science.) At Harvard Mr. Gore’s grades were for years lower than those Bush earned at Yale. Classmates remembered Gore, The Washington Post reported in 2000, spending “a notable amount of time” shooting pool, watching television and “occasionally smoking marijuana.” Gore (whose confessional? new book is titled “The Assault on Reason”), according to The Washington Post, “avoided all courses in mathematics and logic throughout college.” His grades at Harvard were pathetic, especially for someone who today holds himself up as the national arbiter of scientific issues. As a sophomore he got a D in Natural Sciences, and only a C-plus in another low level Natural Sciences course his senior year. In Economics — yet another field in which Gore has exhibited lifelong ignorance — he earned a C-minus.

i think this is great- they are debating her on the issues  and taking her seriously.  she is right on the issues and the mere fact mr robinson wants to have the debate shows how successful the book tour has been for her  political standing

riley4palin,  December 15, 2009 1:10 PM

Eugene Robinson...aka Super Sleuth for the Wash Post sure knows how to keep up with the news.  Hey Gene, um, this was last week's story.

PatrickinOH,  December 15, 2009 1:13 PM

I don't know if anybody knows this, but Eugene Robinson is a distant cousin of Michelle Obama, even if he wasn't related to her he would still be in the tank for Obama but its an interesting tidbit

PatrickinOH,  December 15, 2009 1:15 PM

DefCon66,  December 15, 2009 1:28 PM

BeeFL,  December 15, 2009 1:30 PM

I hope she has people with eyes and ears out for these kinds of candidates. I'm sure she does. How about Ryan Frazier of Colorado, I like him too.

DefCon66,  December 15, 2009 1:30 PM

I like West alot but he's too new to the political scene to be a VP pick for Sarah, I would like to see a Palin/Fred Thompson ticket myself.

PatrickinOH,  December 15, 2009 1:31 PM

Palin/Rubio 2012 does too but I agree with you Palin/West 2012 does have a nice ring to it :)

I am surprised Eugene Robsinson can even talk with his lips so firmly attached to Obama's behind. He is a liberal HACK and a pathetic one. He acts as if Sarah's position on climate change is some sort of secret, she has plastered it everywhere, her book, her facebook page, her op-ed piece, its everywhere..she hasnt hidden a damn thing..if this is supposed to be a secret she did a horrible job in hiding it LOL. Poor Eugene, no one reads his idiotic column, everyone read Sarah's. Sounsd like Eugene has the case of the JEALOUSY BLUES

PatrickinOH,  December 15, 2009 1:38 PM

it boggles the mind I keep hearing GOP strategists on tv saying we need to attract more hispanics to the party, yet they are giving Rubio the cold shoulder and are going with the white guy with a fake tan seems self defeating to me

BeeFL,  December 15, 2009 1:38 PM

This was from AUGUST 2009! Still applies today even more so!!!!

PatrickinOH,  December 15, 2009 1:39 PM

trust me I'm no fan of identity politics but we don't support Rubio because he is simply hispanic we support him because like Sarah he actually believes in what he says

BeeFL,  December 15, 2009 1:40 PM

Same message as Sarah!!!!!!

MarkRNY,  December 15, 2009 1:40 PM

"The bad news: they're as crap on policy as they are on trivia."-Lol.

This "theory" was exposed as crap from Day 1 out of their own mouths. The alarmist line was "It's warmer than it's been for the last 700 years". Well, what the hell happened 700 years ago to cause it?! No SUV's, no "population bomb", actually fewer horses and cattle (geez)--just a lot of knights jousting and showing off for their ladies (the good old days).

Sarah's giving Gore V D'Al and these guys the type of beating Sonny Corleone gave to his brother in law, where he ran out of things to hit him with so took off his shoe and started hitting him with that...she's actually more like Michael than Sonny though--calm and cool until the time's right. Then it's 6 ft. under in the Meadowlands time.

Type, type, Whacked!

One more OT ratings for the Oprah Obama Christmas special are in via our own SouthernGent at hotair.com:

Aw…The Oprah and her bitter, hateful BFF’s failed to get a ratings win.
ABC’s Christmas In the White House special did a 2.8 adults 18-49 rating, lower than the season average for Brothers & Sisters (of 3.17).

Other Global Warming news

Sorry to hear that Gov Palin will be forced to give up running.  The EPA's new ruling that CO2 is a pollutant will ban any activity that increases respiration and hence CO2 output.

The ban on heavy breathing is also how they plan to implement the global population reduction strategy...

This is how Obamacare is gonna be, "You dont need this test..you dont need that test, this test is too risky you dont need it..this test is harmful you dont need it, you can live without it" If it wasnt for a CAT SCAN my cousin's kidney cancer(Which was found in the earliest of stages) would have been found out late and he would be dead today..this will be life under Obamacare

Just an update on the most recent thread.

Going Rogue is now the #2 book for the year, and the #1 NF book, at BN.com behind only The Lost Symbol.  After only a month of release.  I doubt it can catch The Lost Symbol but it should finish the year at #2 because the books behind it have already been out for a while and are not doing as well as it currently is.  It still has another 2.5 weeks or so to add to its total.

So it should end up the #1 NF book of the year at BN.com.  Way to go.  The other online sites don't have yearly ranking but I'd imagine it's doing similarly at Amazon, Borders, WalMart and other sites.

It was already the #4 NF book of the year at bookscan and that was as of Nov 29.  After this month it should be much higher, possibly #1 for the year.

It's also doing well with the audio version with 3 straight weeks at #1 and that should end up at the top of NF for the year.

By any measure a huge success.

Governor Palin's approach to climate change and subsequent policies is one of pragmatism, environmental stewardship, and sound economic principles. These foundations won't change with the newest Chicken Little philosophy coming out of some blowhard's mouth.

By the way, I wonder how all this superfluous hot air is affecting the atmosphere?

Also, does anyone know if Obama and Ahnold have ever had a discussion in Ahnold's native tongue of Austrian?

Heyyyy Cavuto got real cute just now - in his lead intro - to the perfect storm and the end of the clip was none other than SARAH (from the terminator movie) being told of the COMING STORM!  HE KNEW some of us would get his meaning!  very kewl!

Wow! should be veeeery interesting... if you see Cal Thomas give him Sarah's Facebook account and tell him before he speaks one more time about her needing to give serious policy speeches and educate herself, to please educate and bone up himself by doing a quick check of her Facebook over the last 6 months.... tell him to lay off looking in the mirror for substance and intellectual gratification... open the door and step outside... the air is fresh and a new leader has emerged.

ridiculous teachers (if you can call them that)

I wonder what  the carbon footprint of the composition of a Facebook post or a WAPO op-ed is.

I betcha it's peanuts compared to the private jets and limos in Copenhagen.

Too early to say. The old rules are old rules.

Recovering Democrat,  December 15, 2009 4:41 PM

Petty? My word choice might be treasonous. I used to live in Nebraska. Bush flew to Offut right after 9/11. That base is home to Strategic Air Command and employs 10,000 Nebraskans.

Threatening to close this base might just be grounds for treason, in my book.

Not if you're playin' to the George Hamilton faction.

PEC,  December 15, 2009 4:43 PM

Bill - We understand your points.  Just let them know, Sarah is the same principles as Reagan she just has a different style of Governing that in ways is better and maybe some ways worse than reagan.

More hot air from the Left regarding Governor Palin from Superstar John F. Kerry:

Eeeks.  I guess James Carville got fired and is sitting in the boiler room with David Plouffe trying to come up with a new strategy to take on Palin.  Next on the docket.....John Kerry reporting for duty.

Now that you mention it Whit, petty doesn't even begin to describe this action it is treasonous, Another thing I don't want to sound rude correcting you, but the Strategic Air Command was inactivated on June 1, 1992, Offut AFB is now part of the Air Combat Command which replaced SAC, the base I live near, Wright-Patterson AFB is HQ for the Air Force Material Command, my dad's last assignment was at this base

terri,  December 15, 2009 7:11 PM

HA!....

John Kerry isn't the only one using Sarah as a "fundraiser"...

"California's 700,000-member progressive Courage Campaign has Palin as its marquee name in a fundraising letter that's out this week. No wonder: with George W. Bush -- the last bigname Republican that Democrats Loved to Hate -- gone, the Campaign prominently stars Palin in an effort to to bulk up the coffers for..the 2010 GOP gubernatorial race in the Golden State?
That's right, the organization's new fundraising push lambastes GOP candidate and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman as -- ouch! -- "California's Sarah Palin.'' That's a jab at Whitman's suggestion that, if elected, she would suspend the landmark greenhouse gas reduction law, AB32 because of the economic hardship it is creating on jobs in the state.

The pitch letter from the Courage Campaign's head Rick Jacobs makes the connection like this:

"Have you heard Sarah Palin's, er, I mean Meg Whitman's radio ads?
"Almost every time I turn on my radio, I hear one of Meg Whitman's "A Better California" campaign ads. Whitman -- who wants to be Governor and strongly supported the McCain/Palin campaign -- has just launched a huge radio ad buy across California."
"What Whitman doesn't say is that, when it comes to global warming, she's another Sarah Palin....with your help, the Courage Campaign is going to produce and air a radio ad of our own, pointing out that Whitman and Palin have the same "wait and see" approach to our planet's climate crisis."

"Is the mere mention of the Palin name now serving as -- as one wag called it -- "political chum" to the Democrats?
Democratic strategist and former White House spokesman Chris Lehane says maybe so: "Ten percent of the country loves her and 90 percent hates her...she's replaced the tobacco industry for the Democratic Party.'' "

^^^^^He wishes.....this guy conts to be an A$$. 90% hate her?....What country is he living in anyway?

ellen,  December 15, 2009 7:17 PM

Thanks for the link! He seems like a good guy. So what is he doing in Illinois politics!? haha. i will try to spread the word.
The other day I saw a campaign sign downtown for this guy and it had the republican elephant symbol on it. I was surprised that being a republican is actually a positive thing in an election now. 2010 should be interesting.

cookboy,  December 15, 2009 7:19 PM

Sounds like quite the ducking funce there. Idiocy of that magnitude can take a big chunk outta ones a##.

yogi41,  December 15, 2009 7:26 PM

If only Meg Whitman was another Sarah Palin! She is FAR FROM IT. Whitman is like Romney; a progressive in Republican clothing.

terri,  December 15, 2009 7:30 PM

Whit,

Yep!...I've been following him and he's got my "seal of Approval" too...;-)

What's making my blood boil though is this whole "federal prison" deal.
Same old Chicago shannigans...
already make the deal behind closed doors and THEN go to the public for thier opinions. that's the Chicago way ya know. :-(

Reminds me of when Daley got rid of Meigs Field...remember?
He didn't want it...getting rid of it was a "pet project" of his that wasn't very popular.
Then after 9/11 "citing terrorism concerns because of it's proximity to Chicago's largest buildings"...Daley sent in ...in the middle of the night (seriously), heavy machinary and destroyed the runways.
The "federal prison" for Quatmo detainees has Chicago politics written all over it.

AND...
Of course our present Governor and the "early realease"program, has Huckabee 2 written all over it.

cookboy,  December 15, 2009 7:35 PM

Maybe a Jeopardy appearance would be as good as a presidential debate, in a different but relevant kinda way.

terri,  December 15, 2009 7:42 PM

Whit,
What worries me though is Kirk.
Seems like he's the **gulp**..frontrunner.
Kirk is such a moron. I truely don't think he's any better than Burris, the only difference between the 2 is that Kirk has a R after his name.
As you all know, that doesn't mean squat.

I'm hoping with all my heart that Sarah will endorse this candidate, Patrick Hughes.
He's never really been in politics before...yea...plus he sounds like a male Sarah Palin. ;-)

take a look....

Deidre,  December 15, 2009 7:49 PM

Hey guys, look at this from the Green Room over at hot air :)

http://hotair.com/greenroom/archives/2009/12/15/what-do-you-read-al-gore/

My favorite part of a lengthy interview that Jose Antonio Vargas of The Huffington Post recently conducted with Al Gore came when Vargas asked, “What do you read?” He didn’t get much of an answer.
“Oh, gosh,” Gore said. “Well, I have a custom-designed iGoogle page that has lots of different sites on it that I scan all the time. Some of them come and go, but a lot of them stick around.”
Vargas then prompted the former vice president, who apparently couldn’t remember the names of any of his favorite liberal Web sites or blogs. “Like Daily Kos?” Vargas said.
“I think it’s a great site, and I think it serves a great role,” Gore said. “But I read sites that probably I know for a fact people don’t. RealClimate.org. I wish more people read it.”
Imagine if a politician running for office had been asked such a simple question yet answered so curtly and vaguely.
Oh, wait, you don’t have to imagine. Just think Sarah Palin, Katie Couric and the Palin-is-stupid feeding frenzy that ensued after the two met mano y mano. By way of reminder:

Couric: And when it comes to establishing your worldview, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world?
Palin: I’ve read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.
Couric: What, specifically?
Palin: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.
Couric: Can you name a few?
Palin: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too. Alaska isn’t a foreign country, where it’s kind of suggested, “Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?” Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America. Then it’s off to the bus where Palin sits down for a wide-ranging interview.
Unlike Gore, who only has sitdown interviews with friendly reporters like Vargas, Palin was in enemy territory with Couric. She later explained her reaction to Couric’s question: “I knew that whatever I threw out there, whether it’s the USA Today or New York Times or whatever I said, that’s just more fodder for someone to not only mock, but tear apart and presume to at least claim that that is a reflection of my own beliefs, so you know, so I just felt like, let’s just move on to the next question.”
Palin explained herself again and again and again this fall on her book tour. She even made the manufactured controversy a punchline in her appearance before journalists at the Washington Gridiron Club. But she is still portrayed as an imbecile who doesn’t read newspapers, simply because she either didn’t have a ready answer to Couric’s question or wouldn’t give it.
Rest assured that the media will not treat Gore the same way as Palin for mustering the name of [...]

Speaking of hot air, Allahpundit is throwing feces again:

If she’s all about pandering to tea-partiers, she could have declared that she’s “seen the light” and retracted her prior statements about the reality of climate change...

Really Allah?  It's not pandering, it's a fact.  The climate changes.  The Earth is four and a half billion years old.  In those four and a half billion years there have been four major ice ages interspersed with warm periods.

...and the possibility that man is contributing to it.

She's said time and time again that that she doesn't believe it's primarily anthropogenic.

Instead, she’s apt to end up as something of a centrist on this issue in the GOP primaries, where Huck, Mitt, T-Paw a player to be named later will declare that the whole subject’s a fraud.

She's already stood up and fought against it.  Huck and T-Paw completely drank the Koolaid on it and Romney doesn't have the balls to take a position.

Allahpundit is a lying douche.

She's campaigning according to this article on Josh Painter's site. It's talking about the Conservative Symposium that the Guv is speaking at in January.

In a telephone conversation this morning, Saundra Hadley of Tea Party Support told <span>Bloggers for Sarah Palin</span> member and <span>Sarah Palin's Accomplishments</span> editor Ron Devito that Gov. Palin, who will be in Texas in January campaigning for Gov. Rick Perry's reelection bid, was booked for the event through the Washington Speakers Bureau. Jennifer Ramirez-Jasiczek, another representative for Tea Party Support, told San Antonio's <span>Express-News</span> that Gov. Perry will "make a few remarks" and introduce former Gov. Palin at the Sunday <span>session</span> scheduled for Jan. 24th at 9:00 AM.

I actually didn't read what he wrote as insulting. I know he has a history with Palin-bashing, but it seemed to me that he was refuting that she was "selling out" for her career. He also managed to bacsh Huck, Mitt and T-Paw.

I took away a much different read than you on this post. Could it be AP is standing up for Palin?

Whitney,  December 15, 2009 8:32 PM

I agree. I am worried about Kirk getting the nod. I don't know that he'd any better than Giannoulias who is actually making it a point that he won't be a "rubber stamp for Obama". However, that campaign tactic is encouraging. Illinois Democrats trying to run "away" from Obama? That shows how bad Obama really is! The whole prison thing is very sickening. They try to mask as a way to provide jobs, which it will likely do, but at what cost? What will it mean for suspected terrorists to be housed in Illinois? More civilian trials? Conversion of other prisoners to radical extremism? Making Illinois a target for terrorism? It's just another way for Illinois to try to grab any source of federal money.

It's like the world's deadliest joke, from the Monty Python sketch, 'someone saw two words, and they spent a week in the hospital" Great news on Rubio.

Given AP's history, I'm inclined to see it as bashing.  You could be right, though.  He does seem to be warming up to her a bit.

I remember that.  His subheading was "heartache", as if what she said made her a sellout or something.
