My Colorado Springs Signing Extravaganza

Hey everyone!

Just thought I'd share my experience at the Sarah Palin book signing at the Chapel Hills Mall Borders store in Colorado Springs.

Three words can easily describe the event: It was awesome.

Ok, so that's really not enough of a thorough description, so I shall continue...

First, let me just say, kudos to all those who got up at the crack of dawn in sub-zero temps (think the windchill in the Springs hit somewhere in the -20s) to start lining up for wristbands even before the mall opened at 6:30am. Sarah Palin has some truly dedicated fans out there, and they literally are everywhere!

We had local media and radio people out at the mall in the morning as well, chattin' it up with everyone! Everyone was in such a joyful mood, and they should be! Especially since the local Christian radio station came out to give donuts to everyone, and Chick-fil-A (my awesome employer) gave out free Coke coupons to everyone so they could redeem those in the mall after getting their wristbands for any beverage they wanted!

Of course, what would any Palin event be without an impersonator? People love the impersonators! Photo ops galore! What a great morning it was for everyone.

Anyway, I invited a couple of friends/co workers to go with me, and we were stoked. When we all came in the afternoon to start lining up for the signing itself, we met many Blue Star moms. These ladies are awesome!

Finally, after much anticipation, it was time for our group to head upstairs to the signing. I'm just going up when I spot Michelle Malkin in line behind us. I'm like, "um...hello...Michelle Malkin!" I wasn't sure if it really was her, but I got confirmation from the people around us that kept saying "Hey, Michelle!" When we got up stairs and closer to the table, I turned and said, "Hi, Michelle! I really love Hot Air! You guys are great!" She said thanks and that she'd tell the guys to keep up the good work over there. She had her family with her too. Such cute kids! She later posted on her time with the Governor, which I posted on here.

So as we're making our way to the table, I'm chatting with the people I brought with me, and I'm also trying not to faint, vomit, or just run away. I'm also pondering exactly what to say to the Governor and the First Dude in a concise and informative way. Pressure!

That's me in the striped sweater. My brain's still struggling with what to say...

Once I finally reach my destination, I'm not nervous at all (which surprised me...a lot). I say "Hey! I'm Julie, and I'm with Conservatives4Palin!" Sarah Barracuda gently reaches out her hand to shake mine and smiles. She says, "Oh that's great! Thank you so much!" She's flying through the books at this point with the flick of her Sharpie. Her multitasking abilities are even more impressive in person. She then softly says something to Todd, and he immediately sticks out his hand for me to shake, and with a big smile he says "Yes, thank you guys so much! We appreciate it!" I say "Of course! You're welcome!" By this time I've already kind of been corralled out of the signing area.

It's at this point where I see Chuck and Sally Heath just waiting there, so eager to meet more people! Let me just say this: Chuck. Is. The. Man. He and I nearly had a full-blown conversation that lasted easily 3 min (at least it felt that long). He asked me my name, if I was still in school, where I went to school, what I studied, and where I worked. I said I graduated from Liberty University, and that I received my Marketing degree and am a marketing director for a Chick-fil-A in town. He made sure I wasn't the one "flipping the burgers back there," and I assured him I wasn't. He also said one of his teacher buddies used to coach basketball at Liberty many years ago. It was great to have such a connection with Chuck!

Me and the coolest man ever.

Sally was awesome as well. She just exudes a warmth and compassion that I've rarely seen! She and Chuck certainly raised their children right.

Sally is so sweet.

It was a great night, and one I will not soon forget. Hopefully, the next time I get to meet the Governor, I can tell her my cousin married a gal from Wasilla. True story!

Here's a final tidbit! My friends and I are going up the escalators to get our books signed at about 45 seconds in:

Julie,
Thank you for sharing your experience!

CruelaDev,  December 9, 2009 9:28 PM

Come to think of it...you probably could have gotten a better audience with Sarah and Todd...had we not have been in front of you and mentioned C4P!...Sorry!

Can I ask a quick question?  I remember reading somewhere that ACLU lost one of its biggest contributers, which was about 25 million dollars, about 20% of their operating budget.

Does anyone have a link to this story?  I remember reading it on one of the threads, and cannot find it now.  Thanks.

wise, careful.

Julie, nice job and good luck as marketing manager! Very cool.

wisetrog,  December 9, 2009 9:44 PM

No offense. Deleted my comment.

Hope it's okay if I relate just a few more things from the Colorado Springs book signing.

Borders, Chapel Hills mall, and Governor Palin's staff ran this event like clockwork. They let us into the mall early to wait in the warmth. Borders walked down the line and kept us informed. They were friendly, and helpful. Governor Palin arrived an hour and a half early, so we were done by 6:30 and driving home by 6:45. There was Christmas music playing, they had the lines inside the store all marked off, the coats and other paraphanalia was taken care of and returned quickly. It was just so professional.

It was amazing to meet a wonderful lady in line, who comes here all the time to read everything, but doesn't comment. So, of course, we urged her to get in there, and comment. What was really amazing was finding out her daughter is going to the college that I graduated from, and on top of that, she graduated from that college the year before I was a freshman! Sarah Palin's world is a small world and God sure has a sense of humor.

Also, Firelight and I discovered we live in the same town, in the same subdivision!:) We were shaking our heads.

yogi41,
You asked how my daughters did in line yesterday. They were fading for the second line gathering. They weren't that giggly when Firelight's kids showed up later in the day. But today, I was talking to them about their experience meeting Governor Palin. They both said their hearts were pounding, and my oldest daughter said she had to keep wiping her hands on her jeans, because they were sweating so much from nervousness. I asked them if it was true that Governor Palin really does look you in the eye and talk to YOU, is interested in YOU! And they said yes, she does. I told them, that is not normal for someone that is a politician. She is a public servant, and is someone who really does care about what you have to say.

Congratulations Julie...

onexsturtle,  December 9, 2009 9:52 PM

Thanks for sharing the experience, Julie! :)

Greta did her preview on Hannity a few minutes ago. She is going to have something on the Tomato guy tonight.

Nancy,  December 9, 2009 10:04 PM

We had a great time reading alot of your comments when we were in line together!:)

There was a guy that said he got in line at 4:30 in the morning, was going to get a bracelet, go to work at the car dealership he works at (he was dressed really nice), then was going to leave work early, and get his book signed. That was great! Besbud gave him a C4P pin.

I asked my oldest daughter if anyone at school asked her why she wasn't at school yester day. She said when she told them that she got to meet Sarah Palin, almost everyone said, oh, you are so lucky! I wish I could meet her. But one friend said that Sarah Palin is a freak, and that she abuses her children by neglecting and ignoring them, because she was Governor and now she is running for President. (This is 6th grade, by the way) My daughter said, no, none of that is true. Then the girl said that Hillary Clinton was the best, and then it was just a who is the best argument.

I got to spend the most time with bestbud, and he is the best. I felt like we were already good friends, from the moment we spoke on the phone trying to find each other. He is a wonderful man.
Cruela is AWESOME! By the way, PEC and Mia, thank you for letting me know she was on her way in the morning, because I wasn't on the thread that she had left her phone number on, and when I read that she was heading our way, I was able to look up her phone number and call her. Cruela is hilarious, a great supporter of Governor Palin and will go to great lengths to show her support! We tried to get her to complete the trifecta of unbelievable things she would do for Sarah. The first one was reading a book, then being in a big crowd, which she accomplished. But we couldn't get her to pose for a picture. Although bestbud may have snuck one, when she didn't know it. Cruela you are a great friend!
Firelight was the last to arrive, and her family was so great! We were talking a mile a minute from the moment she got in line with us! I think we are going to be getting together a bunch over the next 3 years!

johnmd,  December 9, 2009 10:05 PM

Great right up Julie .  It sounds like all the book events were well prepared and with nan exception or two went off great.  Thanks

Nancy,  December 9, 2009 10:09 PM

Oh, I forgot, my youngest daughter also said he legs were shaking when she was about to meet Governor Palin. I thought that was cute!:)

Okay, I'm sorry for taking up your time, I know this is Julie's thread. Maybe this would have been better on an open thread. Sorry, Julie.

I just wanted to thank C4P again for being here! I can't believe the wonderful people that are on this website. It was a privilege to get to meet 3 of them yesterday.

Bill in Baltimore,  December 9, 2009 10:10 PM

wise, I was joking. Good observation.

Nice article. I went to the Birmingham signing and had a great time. Meeting Sarah Palin was a delight.

Nande,  December 9, 2009 10:20 PM

I'm so bummed I didn't know who all of you C4Pers were! I would have acosted you in the appropriate manner! :-)

Oh well! I, too, had a great time yesterday - the Palins, Heaths...and Aunt Katie are fantastic people who make everyone feel right at home.  My only regret is that I was too far to the front of the pack to meet Todd Palin (he showed up late). Next time, I s'pose...

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I dislike this comment in the extreme!
Cruela you are nuts!

yogi41,  December 9, 2009 10:39 PM

So we have a lot of C4Per's living in Colorado. Then why in the hell did we lose that state? What's wrong with you people!? We're counting on you gals and guys in 2010 and 2012 not to let this state go blue again. ;)

Julie is a certfied...genuine...100% All-American...Barbarian Babe.

Wow!  I had no clue so many C4P faithful were there that night! That's a shame I didn't get to meet y'all in person, but it's totally great you were there.
