Obama Claims ObamaCare is a Jobs Program

Every once in a while someone will say something so spectacularly asinine that I’m literally stunned. Admittedly, Obama’s ability to stun yours truly is noticeably fading due primarily to the propensity for, and frequency of, obtuse economic pronouncements from his administration. I suppose I’m being slowly but steadily conditioned to expect nothing else.

This morning, while enjoying my typical breakfast of an ice cold diet Splenda Coke, I overheard a reporter on TV in the C4P lobby say something to the effect that Obama claimed he really is focused on jobs and that ObamaCare is actually the centerpiece of his jobs program, and that's why he's working so hard to pass it. After wiping up the diet Coke which, seconds before, had occupied my mouth, I thought surely I had heard wrong. After all, I was up late last night, had a few adult beverages, and could have easily been mistaken. Nobody, much less the president of the United States, could possibly say something so incredibly ignorant. But then we are talking about Obama…

I moved with alacrity to the nearest unoccupied C4P workstation, the only one available being next to Rich Crowther who was putting the finishing touches on his Sunday Roundup. Once I logged in, I typed the words “Obama: health care is a jobs program” into Google. Sure enough, my ears did not deceive me. Yesterday, in an article for the Washington Examiner, Byron York quoted Obama:

"What has happened is a lot of the debate in Washington has been around health care, so people think, well, I guess they must not be working on jobs," Obama said Friday in Allentown, Pennsylvania. "No, we’ve been working on jobs the whole time. Health care is part and parcel with where we need to take our economy."

[…]

Just to make things perfectly clear, Obama pledged in his Saturday address that he will "focus every single day" on the jobs issue. As far as health care is concerned, he repeated that he's doing it for jobs. "I’m determined to meet our responsibility to do what we know will strengthen our economy in the long-run," Obama said. "That’s why I’m not going to let up in my efforts to reform our health care system…"

Oh, of course. Now I get it. Nationalizing more than 1/6 of the economy is a jobs program! Why didn’t I think of that? This contention, of course, is so profoundly absurd that it’s difficult to know where to begin. To honestly promulgate such nonsense, one would have to believe that a new multi-trillion entitlement program with its resulting higher deficits, higher taxes, higher inflation, higher interest rates, higher legal fees, and increased business mandates, will entice businesses to hire more employees.

This audacity of ignorance coming from Obama is truly breathtaking and on a par with his claim that extending health insurance to tens of millions of people will somehow lower costs. The thought that Obama could possibly believe any of this rubbish illustrates the colossal mistake America made in November 2008, and the challenge we face in overcoming the damage that has already occurred as well as that which will occur during the remaining three years of the “Age of Obama”. Only someone with utter contempt for free markets who has never created a job in his life could possibly think this way. I’m reminded of a graph David Riddick included in an earlier post.

The above graph, as David pointed out, needs no further comment and is as good an explanation as any for the appalling lack of economic literacy emanating from the Obama Administration. In order for businesses to hire workers and thus, create jobs, they have to have the reasonable expectation that there will be a sustained increase in demand for the product (or service) they provide. Foisting this huge new entitlement on our over taxed, over-regulated, and debt-ridden economy will accomplish exactly the opposite. That something so obvious even needs to be mentioned is astonishing.

for obama to intterupt his sunday golf game you know it has to be BIG. and it is. the surest way the left has of permanently transforming this country is by passing a healthcare bill.

the people must stop this spending madness. I'm sure Sarah is on board, and understands the severity of the situation.

I just got this email from my cousin, who like my husband, is in his medical residency. This letter is from an Indianapolis physician, written to Sen. Evan Bayh last summer.

An Indianapolis doctor's letter to Sen. Bayh about the Bill (Note: Dr. Stephen E. Frazer, MD practices as an anesthesiologist in Indianapolis, IN )
Here is a letter I sent to Senator Bayh. Feel free to copy it and send it around to all other representatives. -- Stephen Fraser

July 23, 2009

Senator Bayh,

As a practicing physician I have major concerns with the health care bill before Congress. I actually have read the bill and am shocked by the brazenness of the government's proposed involvement in the patient-physician relationship. The very idea that the government will dictate and ration patient care is dangerous and certainly not helpful in designing a health care system that works for all. Every physician I work with agrees that we need to fix our health care system, but the proposed bills currently making their way through congress will be a disaster if passed.

I ask you respectfully and as a patriotic American to look at the following troubling lines that I have read in the bill. You cannot possibly believe that these proposals are in the best interests of the country and our fellow citizens.

Page 22 of the HC Bill: Mandates that the Govt will audit books of all employers that self-insure!!

Senator, I guarantee that I personally will do everything possible to inform patients and my fellow physicians about the dangers of the proposed bills you and your colleagues are debating.

Furthermore, if you vote for a bill that enforces socialized medicine on the country and destroys the doctor-patient relationship, I will do everything in my power to make sure you lose your job in the next [...]

CBDenver, December 6, 2009 1:01 PM

I guess when Obama says ObamaCare is "where we want to take our economy" I guess he means once everyone is forced into government-run healthcare, they can start to save money by rationing care. Just like some private citizen said on her Facebook page a while back.....

tim c, December 6, 2009 1:23 PM

Well if you go back to the White House visitor logs and see Andy Stern of SEIU 22 times in the first 5 months I think we can figure what orders are being followed. Stern is a commie and wants to bring down America, enough said.

Thanks Doug, you do a great job!

Mia, December 6, 2009 1:46 PM

Hey O'Blabla...You LIE!

Izzy, December 6, 2009 1:59 PM

Obama believes in socialized medicine...plain and simple. Everything else is gimmick.

toughluck, December 6, 2009 2:10 PM

I fear we are going the same way as FDR, who ultimately turned out to be a great man and lead us though the war. However well intentioned he was extremely misguided as how to get the US economy going and most say that the government welfare and jobs programs he instituted actually extended the depression and made it worse. Ironically it was only because of the war that the US was finally able to pull itself out of the depression.

The problem is that when the government provides jobs as part of a well meaning effort to improve the lives of workers, it kills the competition and small businesses in the same niche die. Resulting in job losses overall and in government 'welfare' dependence.

Obama's programs are well meaning, idealistic, and ultimately a disaster. As the saying says: The road to hell is lined with good intentions

terri, December 6, 2009 2:10 PM

Doug,

I to was stunned to say the least when I first heard this. It's funny, I thought I missheard or something and went running to "google" too. lol

I'm glad he's so concerned about the "jobs issue" that he's going to "focus every single day on it". Actually THAT line Doug, made me sprew diet pepsi all over my computer. ;-(

Then I got to thinking, THAT'S the reason he is making his "White House to Main Street" tour.
Geeezzz, do you even believe that...Obama's now going on tour?!?!?!

It's a multi-city "tour"...I guess to mingle with the "little people".
I wonder if he has a bus??? I wonder where he got the idea to "tour" the smaller, middle america towns" ? Hmmmmm, I wonder??

It started in Pennsylvania, no other dates or towns are posted yet.
I wonder if people will wait in line, thousands strong, in blizzard type conditions to hear him say this.....

"Departing from his prepared text, the president said his own family had members who were looking for work. He did not elaborate. The CBS News blog "Political Hotsheet" on Friday night quoted a White House official as saying, "I don't think they are close close" family members."

Nah....I don't think so either...s/

or maybe this....

"Judy Hartzell of Salisbury Township asked Obama how he would bring back manufacturing jobs. Hartzell had been laid off from Tama Manufacturing Co. a local textile company Obama visited during his campaign.
The president told her that some jobs like hers may never come back. He said the country must focus on industries where it has a technological edge -- "clean energy, infrastructure, increasing our exports."
Ummm..okay.

and of course Obama went here....

"Obama finished his day at the Nestle Purina PetCare plant in Allentown, where he greeted about 180 workers with handshakes and "Happy holidays.""

Maybe he should have went to the unemployment line and told all of them "Happy holidays",
or how about even a "shout out" of Merry Christmas. s/

So watch out you guys, looks like Obama will be coming to a town near you.

BTW...Have I said lately how much I loathe this man????

toughluck,

There's nothing "well meaning" about Obama's programs.
It's a plan, pure and simple, to make this a socialist country. Has been from the momment he put his hand on that bible on January 20th 2009.

What kind of jobs will this create? This plan stifles development of drugs and new technologies as there will be not be an incentive for companies to invest money in development if their prices will be dictated to them by the government. Research jobs will not be created. People will be less likely to pursue a medical job for similar reasons. The path that this plan will lead us down will drive private insurance out of business as the government is both a referee and a player in this game so those kinds of jobs will not be created. Small businesses will not be able to hire people because of the fees and charges mandated to them by the government regarding health care. It will not be feasible for them to hire more people, and may actually force them to lay people off.

So what that does leave? With the massive bureaucratization of health care, only government jobs have even a chance of being created. With the obstructionary maze that this plan creates, jobs may need to be created just to lead people through this mess, which means that the American workforce may soon resemble the graph depicting the Obama administration. The government has taken over much of the banking industry, the car industry, and now possibly the health care industry. We've seen how well a centralized economy works in the former USSR. Maybe Tina Fey was right, "I can see Russia from my house". She just didn't know she was using an economic metaphor.

Obamacare can do everything and anything , it saves money , reduce spending and increase coverage to everyone.

Unicorns of everyone.

Kjanlady, December 6, 2009 3:03 PM

What concerns me is the minority of Americans who still support Obama despite their lack of support for his policies. Are they stuck on stupid? I sincerely hope that this pathetically stupid statement gets the national media attention that it deserves and is the main topic of news along with Climategate over the next month. Of course, the lamestream media will be pissing all over themselves to explain what Obama really meant was.... and that the earth will surely warm up again someday...after all summer will be here in a few months...if we all survive the Artic blasts of this winter.

Obama's presidency will go down in history......AS THE LAMEST....AS THE MOST DESTRUCTIVE....AS THE MOST CORRUPT....AS THE LEAST INTELLIGENT.....AS THE MOST EXPENSIVE.....AS THE LEAST SAFE......AS......AS.....

Da**, it this man stupid or what? I'd love to get mass e-mail , videos, & tape recordings leaks from this administration. Surely, there is one concerned citizen politician in the group. Not only will we have to contend with all the damage that Obama's presidency will heap upon this country, but we will have to endure the massive investigations into it's corrupt, illegal and unconstitutional actions....probably for years. Can we wait for 2010 or 2012.....

Whitney, December 6, 2009 3:13 PM

Also, if this was really about jobs he would have said so in the beginning, and the plan would take effect before 2012 and 2013.

terri, December 6, 2009 3:17 PM

Bingo whit,...right on target.

Emily (Jane Austen), December 6, 2009 4:43 PM

Emily (Jane Austen), December 6, 2009 4:47 PM

I'm scared, this bites. NO jobs will come to Detriot/Michigan. We're doomed. No more American cars. All Hondas from here on out (which isn't a bad thing but sooooo many people will be out of a job. Our unemployment rate is 11% or 12%, I think.)

cookboy, December 6, 2009 5:14 PM

exactly. What other kind of job does anyone in this administration know?

cookboy, December 6, 2009 5:16 PM

If he was just plain stupid, this wouldn't be such a big deal.

Seabee, December 6, 2009 5:20 PM

Saw a bumper sticker today. It says " DONT BLAME ME, I VOTED FOR THAT AMERICAN".

sandrainoregon, December 6, 2009 5:36 PM

Health care is one of the fastest growing areas of job growth. Improvement in delivery will mean more jobs. The "bureaucratization of health care is already in place." It just that the "bureaus" are controlled by the insurance industry. The insurance industry should not equal the health care industry. Medical careers will be more inviting when the practioners have more control. How many times have you heard a doctor complain about having a procedure being refused by a "high school graduate clerk?"
