Obamacare Monstrosity Open Thread (Update: Cloture is Invoked)

In a couple of hours (1:00 A.M. on the East Coast), the Senate is scheduled for a vote to invoke cloture on the manager's amendment. This vote is the critical one because it is a vote to end debate. Passage of the healthcare bill is allegedly all but a formality in the Senate if cloture is invoked. We'll update with what happened when the votes are tallied for this vote.

In other news, if you plan on traveling to Ontario in April of next year, you may want to check out this event that is scheduled to take place on tax day (note that nobody from Governor Palin's camp has confirmed that this event will take place). (h/t Alexonian)

What's up this evening?

Update: 60 Senators have voted to invoke cloture. Every Republican voted against the amendment. Senator Nelson has effectively confirmed that he is a "cheap date."

Aren't you glad you aren't a Senator this year?  They are certainly earning their pay.

Whitney,  December 20, 2009 10:54 PM

Liberals claim that if this bill isn't passed x number of people will die due to lack of health insurance. However, with Sen. Nelson caving on abortion, the bill will allow for states to choose that abortion be covered and that "allocation accounts" must be set up so that plans will cover abortion. So, in essence, by the liberals logic, they are exchanging the "death" of the uninsured for the "death" of the unborn. This is sickening and sad.

This, of course, is just one of the many aspects of the bill that are wrong.

Liberals claim that if such a bill doesn't pass that x number of people will die due to lack of health insurance. With Senator Nelson giving in on abortion, the plan as it currently stands will allow states to choose to cover abortion and other provisions mandate that plans cover abortion via "allocation accounts", separate from other "accounts" in insurance plans.  So, essentially, using the liberals logic this plan exchanges the "deaths" of the currently uninsured for the "deaths" of unborn children.

There are obviously a multitude of things wrong with this bill, but this is just saddening and sickening.

OldDude,  December 20, 2009 11:17 PM

Yesterday, Mrs. OldDude and I were headed out to do some shopping.  I was listening to the radio and growling about healthcare when I saw the red lights in the rear view mirror.  One of our CHP folks pulled me over for going 65 in a 45 mph construction zone!  Good thing he didn't catch me a little later in the conversation or I'd have been over 100...

Anyhow, after the license, registration, and insurance routine, he gave me a gentle lecture.  Since I was dead wrong, I just said "yes, sir.  I wasn't paying attention."  He handed me back my paperwork and gave me my first Christmas present of the year...no ticket!

Since I regard myself as a "professional speeder," I hate making rookie mistakes.  Just shows to go ya' how being incensed at Congress can ruin your day...as they have all week.  First line in this week's column:  "Politician's the name and extortion's the game!"

Hey, Brianus...

Congrats on your Raiders and a little bit of redemption for Russell.  Hope you have time to cheer on Cal against the Utes on Wednesday...GO BEARS!

PS.  Stop reminding me that you were a TA at Stanford...I may have to stop idolizing you!

PatrickinOH,  December 20, 2009 11:19 PM

The only silver lining I see if this is passed and signed into law is that it will finally it will prove Dem strategists wrong who keep insisting that if they pass healthcare they will be more popular

PatrickinOH,  December 20, 2009 11:20 PM

yogi41,  December 20, 2009 11:23 PM

People ARE paying attention and they are trying to do something about it. The American people have taken to the street, protested, called, emailed, shown up to townhalls, etc.... all to no avail. Our actions and our voices are being ignored by this administration and his Congress. Please don't say people aren't noticing; they are and they're sick about this, too.

You'll see how many people are paying attention in 2010. Nixon's Silent Majority victory will look like peanuts compared to what is coming their way in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

PatrickinOH,  December 20, 2009 11:26 PM

nice Adrienne! You are one cool lady!

Reposting from the other thread:

<span>We can still fight this health care bill.  Yes, it'll more than likely be rammed through this week...but then the challenge really starts.   As PATRIOTS, it is our DUTY to fight this tooth and nail.  Are you with me??

//

The Plan: First, conservatives will object to the appointment of the conferees. This is not a motion, so it is non-debatable. An objection cannot be overcome unless the Senator making the objection caves. Let’s hope Senator McConnell agrees with this approach — but regardless, the objection shall be made.

This forces two votes in the U.S. House, one vote to amend the Senate bill on the House floor, since the Senate bill likely cannot pass the House unamended, and will force another vote on final passage of the amended House bill.

So, first, conservatives force two votes in the House, by preventing the appointment of the conferees, and therefore, preventing a House-Senate Conference.

Second, the left will focus on three separate issues to kill the bill in the House. The object of these issues is not to support these policies per say, but to add items to the House bill that will be so objectionable that when the bill goes back over to the Senate, that the Dems lose one or more of their 60 votes.

//

What does this all mean?  That means our plan of action is to call our GOP senators...or if you don't have them, call Coburn or DeMint... and tell them to:

OBJECT TO THE APPOINTMENT OF THE CONFEREES

Do it tomorrow morning!  Let's make the left's life miserable and FIGHT to stop this thing and kill it DEAD.

See here for full details: http://www.redstate.com/dan_perrin/2009/12/20/the-extraordinary-measures-needed-to-kill-the-bill/</span>

GAHanson,  December 20, 2009 11:41 PM

I hear rumors that Joe Biden wrote an op/ed for the NYT supporting 0bamacare.  I wonder how many hits that generated on their site, probably not many, because no one really cares what he has to say about anything.

I hear that the TEA Party is trying to organize a general strike on State of the Union address day.  They are urging people to call in sick, and not buy anything on that day.

PatrickinOH,  December 20, 2009 11:41 PM

I would love to try a snowmachine, my uncle has one but I never can get up to the catskills during the winter, and I have been on a jetski on Lake Erie once, would love to do that again

Whitney,  December 20, 2009 11:43 PM

It's like the people who attempt to call out the Governor without reading her Facebook notes or Op-eds. They obviously haven't read those (aka Algore and the Austrian RINO). Then they attempt to refute what she says. Don't get me wrong, it's extremely entertaininng to watch her respond to these people, but it shows definitely shows that they make assumptions, completely ignore or stances, or lack basic reading comprehension skills.

PatrickinOH,  December 20, 2009 11:44 PM

LMAO!  I let it fly, I only use the F-bomb when absolutely necessary, I am still afraid to cuss around my mom though, she is very catholic (so am I)  I have only recently dared to say "sucks" in her presence, but she says bs and ahole all the time, people are shocked when I tell them that, because my mom is so religious

I was at Fred Meyer today in a Seattle suburb and Going Rogue was ranked as Fred Meyer's #5 best-seller (U for Undertow was #1, the other three books were fiction books).

I couldn't tell if this was a national ranking for Fred Meyers or just the ranking in the Seattle metro area.  Anybody know if Fred Meyers posts a book ranking?

PatrickinOH,  December 21, 2009 12:04 AM

that is a good line but no, I don't know if you have seen that movie Ace Ventura When Nature Calls?  There is a scene in the movie with two Austrailians who hear what they think is a female silverback gorilla and one of them says "Did you hear that?  that sounds like a female silverback gorilla, We get $5,000 for one of those."  That is my speciality

Louisiana Redneck,  December 21, 2009 12:07 AM

I'm watching this fiasco on CSPAN now.  The chaplin is praying....and said that Senators be reminded that they work for the people.  That was LOL funny.  These folks don't give a crap about their constituents.....it's all about the party.  Right or Wrong...it's about the party.

I absolutely HATE what's being done to the USA.....and I don't know what to do about it.  My senator (Landrieu) has already been bribed...as have a few others.  I haven't been able to reach any of her offices in weeks.  They are completely shutting out the will of the people.

I am so pissed off.....but one thing I know for sure....ELECTIONS MATTER.  We cannot let this continue.

Paddy Hugh of Oz,  December 21, 2009 12:24 AM

I gotta say, my prayers go out to all you guys Stateside. Here, we were worrying about how many more of our dollars Kevin Rudd is going to spend at Copenhagen (thank heavens that's over) and likewise for the US. But as if that farce was not bad enough, your campaigner-in-chief is trying to get his Democrat-stacked congress to ram through this horror health bill. And it's not an abstract farce like CPH, it's real.

Okay, so your Senate is stacked with Dems. But that doesn't mean they have to follow the party line. If they catch a whiff of what you people are saying then surely they'll realise their days are numbered if they OK this bill.

The question is, do they believe in Obamacare like good little Obamaproles and will push it no matter what, or can you appeal to their natural Democrat sense of political self-preservation?

DefCon66,  December 21, 2009 12:25 AM

Louisiana Redneck,  December 21, 2009 12:33 AM

My wife works at our local hospital, and tells me stories of how a young girl called an ambulance, got a ride to the hospital, to get a pregnancy test.  When questioned about it, the girl says that she would have to pay $10 at Walgreens, but she can get a ride to the hospital and get the testing done for free.

This is but one example that I've heard....but shows what is really wrong with healthcare in the USA.  FRAUD and ABUSE.  Nobody in the USA is ever turned away due to inability to pay.  This healthcare bill is nothing about improving access to healthcare....it's about control.  The socialists are about to take over, and we will never be the same.

Whitney,  December 21, 2009 12:33 AM

DefCon66,  December 21, 2009 12:33 AM

I believe that those that vote for this will get tossed out of office will have a sweetheart job from some lobbyist group or law firm or political action commitee waiting for them as payment for their treachery to thier constiuents. They have to know this will spell the end of thier politcal carreers no matter how well they lie back home so will be well compensated....yes I'm a cynic and those scumbags in DC bear that out.

Louisiana Redneck,  December 21, 2009 12:35 AM

I agree with you, DefCon....these people are not worried about their jobs....they'll always have work in the mudpit of DC.

Ted Torgerson,  December 21, 2009 12:41 AM

They are earning their pay.

But who is paying them?

They're trading their votes for guaranteed multi-million dollar jobs as lobbyists for foreign countries, Soros, who knows who else, which they will enjoy along with a fat government pension, after they get voted out of office.

Our Congress is bought and paid for.

manajordan,  December 21, 2009 12:41 AM

in college, I temped in the billing office at the university hospital.  I saw claims like this all the time.   It wasn't uncommon for someone to call for an ambulance, go to the emergency room and have a CT scan on their head, only to be diagnosed with a tension headache, dispensed a $10 Tylenol, and sent on their way.  Most of these were Medicaid cases, or uninsured people.  Anyone who thinks this sort of gaming of the system won't increase exponentially with a single payer system is delusional.

Why don't some of these Senators just say: "cha-ching", instead of "aye". It would be much more transparent.

Recovering Democrat,  December 21, 2009 1:18 AM

Well, they did it.

And let us take note that they did this in the dead of night on the darkest night of the year.

Dec. 21 ... a day that will live in infamy.

We will remember.

Jesse Cornish,  December 21, 2009 1:19 AM

This bill raised taxes on the job creators, puts onerous regulations on the health care industry, cuts Medicare to seniors, and to top it all off, forces people to buy insurance, a violation of a person's right to make his or her own medical decisions. Let the Democrats own this vile filth called legislation.

Louisiana Redneck,  December 21, 2009 1:21 AM

This love-fest on the senate floor after the vote is sickening.  They are just so proud of themselves, for this historic bill.  What a shame the 99.9% of the country are asleep, and missed it.

Whitney,  December 21, 2009 1:22 AM

I wonder if when Pres. Obama was in the Senate and didn't vote present if he ever voted "I".

PatrickinOH,  December 21, 2009 1:22 AM

Let's hang it around their necks whenever possible.

Everyone enjoying the death of the left?! This is (unless we sit on our butts, hand-wringing) the beginning of the end for them.

Now they take the whole Soros Internationale freak show back to the House. It's like watching O do his increasingly bizarre tennis match, Tel-O-prompter readings. Back and forth they go.

Nelson's the villain of the hour, but my thoughts keep going back to "Fighting Joe" Lieberman. His was the decisive betrayal imo. The RINO's 1st choice for Veep. He's got to be hung around their necks like a tomb stone ( I do a great Lieberman impression btw. I can tell it's good because I hate myself when I'm doing it).

I'm resigned to this thing's going through both Houses. I'm in dismantle mode and have been for some time. We dismantle everything they've done and we dismantle them--and Sarah of AK holds the screw driver!

They're hurting us badly, but they're burying themselves for a generation--unless we cave! And I ain't caving!...not sleeping--but not caving either!

Nancy,  December 21, 2009 1:31 AM

And if they aren't, they will vote themselves a pay raise! Voilà!

Rouger,  December 21, 2009 1:34 AM

This happens all the time. Then they ask for over the counter drugs to be written as a script so they don't have to pay! (yet they have celll phones and expensive handbags, etc.). O and they also ask for a voucher to get them home when their emergency is not an emergency but an expensive Taxpayer free ride. O the stories I could tell...Reid's comments mad me ill. Dodd patting Mc'Connell on the back made me throw up in my mouth.

Uffda,  December 21, 2009 1:34 AM

Just wait for February. Tea Party Convention, baby!

Rouger,  December 21, 2009 1:35 AM

I want every last one of these people out on their collective ears next November.  I also want them to get snowed in for Christmas.  It would serve them right.

http://www.benedictionblogson.com/2009/12/19/sarah-palin-booked-for-april-hamilton-ontario-appearance-anyway/

"<span>The hospital fundraiser was planned as a thousand seat dinner and Palin speech.</span>
<span>
<p>She charges nearly a quarter of a million dollars per appearance. The dinner goers were to have paid 200 each. The math doesn’t add up.
</p><p>Now the third party fund raisers have announced Mrs. Palin is booked for Hamilton in April anyway, with money raised going to Hamilton’s Charity of Hope. Peter Mercanti’s brother Sam is the president of Charity of Hope."
</p><p>-----
</p><p>Actually, tickets "start at $200"
</p><p>There might be other upgrades such as photos or reception.

</p><p>"<span>The president of the children's charity replacing public health care as beneficiary of a fundraiser that features Sarah Palin says he joked with his brother about the switch, but didn't expect it.</span>
<span>

Peter Mercanti founded Carmen's, which is hosting the April 15 event. His brother Sam Mercanti is president of The Charity of Hope.
Organizers replaced Hamilton Health Sciences with the charity following complaints that the former U.S. Republican vice-presidential candidate's criticism of Canada's heath care system made her an inappropriate choice for a health care fundraiser.
Sam said his brother was talking about problems with the hospitals and public opinion when he made the joke.
"It happened so quickly," he said.
The event will be the second fundraiser for the charity, following its annual event in March.
Mercanti said his charity will not have to foot any of the bill to bring Palin to Hamilton, though it may help pay for some equipment or brochures to promote the event.
Palin reportedly earns around $200,000 a speech.
The charity started as a group of friends at a local YMCA, gathering money for underprivileged kids.
Since 2003 -- the charity's first full year -- The Charity of Hope has received almost $578,000 in donations and receipted gifts, according to the Canada Revenue Agency. Of that almost $166,000 has gone to local charities and children, $248,000 was spent on fundraisers and more than $290,000 on other expenses.
Mercanti did not have an immediate explanation of what "other expenses" included, but added that none of its volunteers or board members are paid.
He cited City Kidz, Good Shepherd Youth Services and the Jennifer Ashleigh Children's Charity as top recipients. The charity also gives 25 per cent of the money it donates to a benevolent fund that benefits individual children.
The charity's website also lists Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, McMaster Children's Hospital and the Oakville Hospital Foundation as recipients.
The switch was a good move for all involved, said Terry Flynn, professor of marketing at McMaster's DeGroote School of Business."

The left will surely anticipate the severe backlash at the polls in '10 & '12 so look out for ACORN, SEIU and Black Panthers as others to influence the elections. These "people" are amoral greedy power mongers and will be ruthless about keeping power, Soros is already hand picking Sec. of States that sign off on the elections....this may get very ugly come election time.

They finally found a way to get all 100 Senators to vote.

Vote at 1 am Monday morning in snowbound Washington, just before the free cloakroom bar closes.

They all show up.

The Republican Party will melt into the larger Tea Party movement - the outrage will be palpable.

I wouldn't be surprised if things actually came to blows.

I rely on favorite inspirational quotes to get me through hard times (LIke watching this freakin' Health Care monstrosity pass)

FROM "THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES":

1) "<span>Now remember, things look bad and it looks like you're not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb, mad-dog mean. 'Cause if you lose your head and you give up then you neither live nor win. That's just the way it is."  <span> <span>Josey Wales</span></span></span>

<span><span><span><span>2) "It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life."  Ten Bears</span></span></span></span>

3) <span>"Endeavor to persevere." -<span>Lone Watie</span></span>

Could there be a constitutional challenge to this law?
My understanding is that Nelson's vote was bought by putting into law that Nebraska would not have to pay its share of medicare costs (or something like that). That means other states will be forced to pay for Nebraska's expenses.

I would think that would be unconstitutional (and unfair, a wellfare system that pays for specific states) maybe someone could investigate that.
