Open Thread (Updated with Poll Quota for the day, Maureen Dowd's Brother is a Palin fan)
-Tracey Porreca has a blog post up (with more pictures) about the Wasilla Christmas Dinner.
-Billy Hollowell writes an article for the Huffington Post (you read that correctly) titled "Media Coverage of Pro-Rationality Sarah Palin is abhorrent."
Anything else going on tonight? The floor is yours.
Update: You knew I had to give you at least one poll update for the day. Our Michigan readers will enjoy the following trends from the great state of Michigan from this pollster.
March 2009
Barack Obama Favorable/Unfavorable: 67/26 [+41]
Approval/Disapproval: 54/39 [+15]
Nine months later.....
December 2009
Barack Obama Favorable/Unfavorable: 49/45 [+4]
Approval/Disapproval: 44/55 [-11]
These numbers come in a state where he won 57% of the vote last November (Bill Clinton won 57% of the two-party vote in Michigan as well).
Of course, Bill Press's next Chicago Tribune article will cite the March poll as evidence for how popular Barack Obama is in Michigan.
Update #2: Maureen Dowd could learn a lot from her brother.

Thanks for the post, Tommy! The Huffington Post article was good (surprise). The best part:
"Get over it, Hollywood. Sarah Palin doesn't share your values. She's pro-life, pro-capitalism and pro-rationality. Rather than wasting all of your time lambasting her, promoting Levi Johnston and attempting to debunk her GOP politician's existence, why not divert even a portion of your energy towards examining the man you've placed America's very existence in the hands of. We've all got personal dirt. Since you'll never let up, why not shovel a little less of Palin's and a little more of Obama's?"
Believe it or not this is not the first positive article about Sarah Palin that was posted on HuffPo. Shortly after she announced her resignation, there was an article written by a woman whose name I can't remember saying how
she was so disgusted by how Sarah and her family were treated. I actually printed out the article because it was so good. She said the treatment of Sarah reminded her of being back in junior high and watching one of the
black girls being teased and made fun of because she was black. She said by treating Sarah Palin like the way our side has treated her, we are turning people off to progressive ideals.
Here's what the pollster (Research 2k) for the Daily Kos had to say about Palin:
Palin will be the 2012 GOP Nominee
http://www.research2000.us/2009/12/23/palin-will-be-the-2012-gop-nominee/
I absolutely hate this guy and think his national polling is a joke (his national 2008 election polling was a joke as he showed McCain/Palin down 12 ten days before the election only to magically change the result to a 5-point deficit the day before just so he could say he was close: http://www.dailykos.com/trendlines) though his state-by-state polling used to be pretty good (he correctly showed Palin pummelling Lisa Murkowski in a hypothetical Senate contest last December before Dittman started schilling for Fagan) before he sold out to Progressive Change.
However, I don't disagree with his conclusion though his analysis is flawed as he, like other numbskulls in the media, don't mention that 90% of what he terms "cultural conservatives" are also fiscally conservative (I would also challenge him on whether he actually believes suburbs are "culturally liberal" because that hasn't been my experience as fairly young individual that went to post-grad in a fairly liberal city).
I could have told you that, and I am not a pollster.
The only real threat she faced was Huckabee, and I think he won't run. Romney will lose for the same reason he did last time-he is too much of a liberal flipflopper. If you consider the Free Republic any indication of Romney hatred and Palin's popularity, Jim Robinson, the owner, has practically endorsed the latter and demonized the former.
I just wonder whether Glenn Beck will hold Romney's feet to the fire. I feel he gave Mitt a pass in 2008 because of religion, and that is something one must be wary of.
Glenn Beck was asked about Palin and Romney about a month and a half back. Beck said Sarah is someone who does the things that need to be done. He said he likes Romeny but he is more of a dealbreaker and less likely to do the hard things that would have to be done.
The question for 2012 is "who will the Democrats nominate?"
hillary
OT: University of Florida Football coach to resign after Sugar Bowl game for health reasons. It's a sad year for Florida fans Tebow's last game now Urban's last game;(
Alan Grayson?
That is sad. I hope he is OK. I'm an Illini fan/alumna. Do you want Ron Zook back? I'd be perfectly happy with that. :)
Thanks for the heads up, Patrick. I'm still doubtful about where he may stand, but I guess we will have to take the wait and see approach.
Your welcome Jesse. I noticed that when Beck was on with Leno and baking cookies, Leno asked Beck if he thinks Sarah should run. Beck said yeah but I need to find out more, Leno said me too. Thats a good sign for Leno, but with Beck I was like if you want to know more read her book damn it!
They will bring back FDR from the dead and he will run for a unprecedented 5th term. He could do it because if you look at his tenure in office, he never let that pesky thing called the Constitution get in his way.
an
NEW 2012 Projections http://republicanrankings.blogspot.com/
He'll come around-that I'm certain of-or he'll be marginalized.
Well the SCOTUS sometimes got in his way. See Schecter v. United States and courtpacking.
I wonder if we'll see a Facebook post on this latest terrorist incident.
Urban Meyer was a great coach. It will be a shame to see him go.
Did anybody watch Glenn this afternoon at 3PM? He had on Jon Huntsman the entire hour (the father of the former Utah governor, current US ambassador to China, you know the one Obama "fears" according to Deputy White House Press Secretary Bill Burton). Beck thinks he should run for president but he is not of course. He sounds like a good man. Maybe he can have a place in her administration.
thank you! I love to follow this.
AK,
On what are you basing your projections? Her favorable numbers among Republicans compared to Romney and Huck?
An undead FDR will lead a horde of Democrat zombies! This is the sign of the apocolypse!
There are more and more columns favorable to Palin showing up on the HuffPo, and if you take a look at the last few, the comments section is pretty sparse. It used to be any column at all would have hundreds of comments, this one so far has only 41, and about half a favorable.
That article was on Breitbart's site a couple weeks ago.
Wait aren't the democrats already zombies?

Okay, people, we still need to figure out what we're going to call Todd. The First Lady is called FLOTUS. But Todd can't very well be called the FDOTUS, can he? Well, maybe.
Suggestions?
HOTUS?
I had not realized that he is having heart problems at age 45. This is a wise move for him to make. God bless him. I hope he does well.
For Hunk, I presume.
Haha! Yes, that works too! I was thinking husband, but I guess that would only apply for Sarah! :)
I would guess it would be FGOTUS, first gentleman, even though the acronym doesn't roll off of the tongue very well.
The stuff that does roll off a little easier is also easy to make fun of, like IDOTUS (Iron Dogger).
I like First Gentleman ... it is the linguistic counterpart to First Lady.
FGOTUS.
Those poor secret service guys. What did the secret service guys nickname Todd during the campaign trail?
TODD
It stands for Todd.
I base my projections on past winners, homestate, and state demographics along with a +5% per state for the natl polling frountrunner.
Sorry to bring up 24 again but in the 7th season, there is a female president and her husband is referred to as the First Gentleman
.
Well, I thought of Totus, but we can't very well do that either. Oh, well, I guess Todd is just going to have to break generations of secret service tradition.
When does the season start? I gave up on the series based on how the 5th season went and didn't catch the 6th (last season).
I can't wait for 24 to start. It looks like it will take place in NYC this season. I really love that show. I have to share something funny (for 24 fans). My mom started watching the show last year for the first time. And about midway through the season she asks me why the FBI agent was still wearing the bandaid on her hand and the same shirt.
LOL
I had to explain to my mom that the entire season takes place in ONE DAY!
My mom is so funny that way. She was totally enjoying the show and yet failed to grasp the central (sometimes ludicrous) plot device.
Well '24 seems to be prophetic in so many small ways, although Obama is nothing like David Palmer. We are gambling on releasing terrorists like at the opening of Season 6, the off kilter
Season 7, feature an attack by African terrorists, which in turn was cribbed from Vince Flynn's second novel. Actually this current incident, kind of echoes the opening to Season 1
Huckabee supporters are dumbasses. They may cost Sarah the nomination if he decides to run.
The Media Research Center gives Jack Cafferty their award for "The Half Baked Alaska Award for Pummeling Palin":
http://mrc.org/notablequotables/bestof/2009/category.aspx?page=8
Check out the link. Some of these, although not surprising, are rather frustrating and, of course, off base.
It starts next month. I thought the 5th season was one of the best. The sixth season was ok. The seventh season was better.
Thats a funny story RD. I've talked to my mom about the show. She doesn't seem to interested in it. My mom can't stand shows that are really violent. She definately could not handle the second half of season 2 where Jack is tortured. That was a little bit much even for me.
5 out of 5 unknown people trying to get attention by talking about someone that is internationally well-known.
That must have been a tough vote to cast, the choices were so blatantly half baked.
Hopefully we don't get to the point where a nuclear device is detonated on US soil like in season 2, or where terrorists get a hold of a nuclear warhead like in season 4, Obama has GWB assassinated like the beginning of season 5.
Tommy did you give up because (spoiler alert for people who have not seen 24 look away now) David Palmer was killed off in season 5?
Maybe CNN should consider having Mr. Cafferty stick needles into his eyes while on camera, it would boost ratings.
I thought jack Cafferty was particulary nasty. I remember the day she was picked after I got home from the Nutter Center where the event took place, I turned to CNN just to see what they had to say, and I saw Jackass Cafferty talking about how there are only 13 people in Alaska so she is not qualified at all. It should be known that Cafferty was involved in a hit and run about 6 years back. What is it with CNN and employing people who did hit and runs? But to be fair to Jack he didn't kill the person he hit unlike Smarmy Sanchez.
CNN could have a split screen during her inauguration speech.
Nancy...LMAO
sarah 2012
Also his wife died about three days after she was picked so maybe he blames her death on her or something.
Those were the most imcompetent terrorists on the series, and that's saying a lot.
You know, thinking about it, electing Sarah Palin as President would save this country a great deal of money-the First Dude wouldn't rack up the same expenses that Michelle Obama incurs. I mean, how big is her staff? 30 people?
CNN gets their highest ratings from behind cell bars.
I was totally shocked my mom was watching 24. We hadn't even talked about the show until a few weeks into the season. She always surprises me with her tv viewing. A few years ago I was shocked to learn she was a devoted viewer of Sex in the City!!!!!
I can't imagine anyone being married to that drunking nut-job.
Michelle Obama reminds me of Sherrie Palmer ... ha!
Remember Maurice Clemmons.
I just wish that people would get the facts right. Some of the comments made about the HuffingtonPost piece were just suppositions. For example, how do they know that it was Sarah the one that asked that tomatoes be removed? A more believable scenario would be that Costco would remove them because if someone threw some at her and it would hit someone else that someone could get hurt. Not just Sarah but someone that was there waiting for a book to be signed. If someone would have gotten hurt they could have been liable. In another instance, there is the ongoing premise that she quit the governorship to write her book. She already had the contract in hand, they even made sure that the contract would not interfere with the ethics laws in Alaska. So Sarah says the reason why she quite but they cannot fathom that and would rather say what they want everyone to believe. Facts be damned! Her book is silly, terribly written; her book was ghostwritten and she did not write a word; she does not write her op-eds; her op-eds are all silly; they cannot even make up their own minds and yet people HAVE to believe them.
The funny thing is that they call themselves Progressives and they have no idea what Progressive is or where it originated. I think they should educate themselves first before they cast aspersions. (Now watch tomorrow "Progressive" will be listed as a "Hot Search" item.)
I would take a look at the other awards that the Media Research Center put out as well.
I remember several months before I started truly paying attention to politics. I was training for a half marathon during the 2008 primaries. I would watch CNN on the treadmill because it was one of the few stations that didn't have infomercials on at that time of day. I remember one morning, CNN devoted a whole segment to Obama's cold. I understand that their are occasional puff pieces and human interest pieces, but a whole story devoted to a cold? They showed a rally where he sneezed, and his supporters cheered because he sneezed!! This is when I knew, that even though I wasn't into politics at the time, that the LSM was in the tank for Obama, and his supporters were robots.
Some may accuse us of being "Palinbots", but I would disagree. We are supporters of the ideals that the Governor espouses, but we are not "followers" of Sarah. We are supporters of the conservative ideals that she conveys, and we feel that she is the one who conveys these principles most articulately and demonstratively. However, conservatism is about ideals and the people of the movement, not its leader. The leader of conservatism is its people. Governor Palin just happens to be the movement loudest and clearest voice.
Sorry for the long and rambling tangent.
hahaahah
I have a feeling if my mom sat down and watched it she would really enjoy it despite the violence. She loved the Lord of the Rings movies, lots of blood and gore in those.
I found " The Sneeze".

I know its hard to believe but he actually had 4 kids with her. Kind of ironic because a few weeks back his question of the hour was should we implement China's One-Child Policy worldwide. He touted that it was successful in reducing pollution. All of the emails he read were mostly supportive of implementing such a demonic policy. One of the emails said the human race was a virus that needed to be eliminated. I would be all for it as long as the people who want to decrease the surplus population to quote a well-known fictional character take themselves out. I could live with that.
Really these low rated networks could bring in viewers with some creative segments.
For instance:
Next on CNN: Watch as James Carville talks about the GOP......... while getting a hairpiece sewn onto his scalp!
I would tune in!
In our next segment on MSNBC: Keith Olbermann will attempt to hold a conversation with Rachel Maddow as they both get manicures! Thus attempting to dispel rumors that he cannot do two things at one time, actually, her too.
That could go viral on YouTube!
And Joe Scarborough could have a doctor come on the set, and shine a flashlight into Joe's ear, and see if it shines out the other ear.
Who isn't curious to see if there really is something in there. I would DVR that segment!
So, maybe Cafferty is onto something with his idea of needles in the eyes.
I was thinking the same thing. Charles Logan in the 4th season reminds me of Obama.
I can't imagine anyone being married to that drucken jackass.
Tommy you never answered my question did you give up on 24 after season 5 because David Palmer was killed off?
OT/ Does anyone know if you can watch "24" online after it airs on T.V.? My wife sometimes watches "Survivor" online the day after it is broadcast on television. Thanks!
Yeah, you can.. just go to FOX's website. I did that last season.
Todd would probably save on a lot of maintenance bills at the White House. We know from Going Rogue that he is quite handy at fixing things. HA!
OT/ Chris Mathews Praises his hero Saul Alinski.

"Progressives" aren't.
I would rather be stuck sitting beside Joe Biden on an Amtrak train, than listen to an Obama speech.
Or watch the movie Tin Cup.
Or listen to Al Gore read his poem to Harry Smith.
Yes, you can. We had to do that one time last year as our DVR conked out in a thunderstorm. I believe it is available the next day.
We used to do that all the time watching Sarah Connor Chronicles.
I felt so disappointed that show got cancelled. I loved it.
Incidentally, I didn't start watching 24 until 2007, when hubby and I decided to watch all six seasons on DVD over six months. We were so ADDICTED.
If anyone hasn't followed the show, I highly recommend renting it.
My favorite was season 4.
What about hearing John McCain incessantly repeating the words "my friends" and "maverick"?
I'm heading to bed. I have to be an altar server at 9 AM mass tomorrow. Good night, Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
Aaaaaaahhhhh!
Torture worse than anything at Gitmo!
Seasons 1-5 were excellent. I liked 4 and 5 the best. Jean Smart was absolutely brilliant as Martha Logan.
Good night, Patrick!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!
I'm sorry but I always liked it when McCain said, "my friends." Maybe it's cause I'm a recovering Democrat! LOL
In 2000, when I lived in So Cal, hubby and I went to a John McCain rally. We wound up voting for Al Gore in the general election, but we LOVED McCain.
It was only when he allowed his staffers to throw Sarah under the bus that I turned on him.
That was a very insightful dot.
Thanks for the updates, Tommy!
I especially enjoyed the second one!:)
I love that Maureen has somebody that makes her head explode, right there in her own family! It is a delicious thought!
I am shocked as well by that!! It's amazing that her head is still intact... I would love to be a fly on the wall at the Dodd Thanksgiving table in 2012 ;)
Bravo!

OK, a member of Jesse Griffin's band of merry men is abosolutely insane! They are always saying that people here are so nasty and vile and deranged, yet I was just informed that not only do they attribute someone elses's comments to me but are asking the Grand Pooba to turn me in to the Secret Service!!!!!
CR46 said...
Gryphen,
I agree its about time to call the secret service on Sarahin2012/ aka Allie on C4P. Believe me (I turned someone else in for making weird threats about the President) and they took it very seriously. Those two names and a few of her hateful posts are all they need to track her down. She is supposbly a college student and it will wreck her life, but she is an adult and will have to take personal responsibility for her actions.
4:00 PM
I do not know what she is referring to (even though I do appreciate the fact that she thinks that I am a college student, I think that is what the word "supposbly" mean in their language) but maybe she/he/it should be made aware of the fact that if her malicious, misinformed comments harm me or mine in any way, I will make sure that if anyone's life is ruined it will be theirs. I will sue her/him/it that from now on until the end of time that person would be working to pay for legal fees, and damages due me. I have nothing to hide nor have ever made any derogatory comments that could be misconstrued as a threat, neither real or implied.
It just goes to show how delusional these people are and how vicious. They make up lies out of thin air and God forbid that you disagree with them.
CR46 - Since I know that someone will inform you of this comment here, I will pray for you that someday you might gain some semblance of sanity. BTW, I am NOT Sarahin2012 and if that person has made any threats then take it up with them, but leave me alone. I did post once in Jesse Griffin's blog but was summarily banned and this was months and months ago. So before you start slandering and libeling, I would suggest that you get your facts straight. Any criticism that I might have made has been solely directed to the lies spewed by Jesse Griffin and his merry men. Since none of these criticisms had anything to do with physical harm (unlike the person who wrote in his blog something to the effect that $200,000 would be a better price for Sarah Palin's head, [now that person should be turned in to the police. so why don't you threaten them?]) there is no legal recourse, if there would be, the police would be visiting all of you ASAP.
CNN Best and Worst of 2009:
"Worst Retreat"-Sarah Palin for "quitting" being Governor. Joy Behar: "she quit".
Then they said something about her payback was Going Rogue, I think they said, facts, who needs them.?!
Whatever.
Ben Stein said something like it frightens him to think she would be making life and death decisions in The White House, but, he said, that is how he feels about President Obama too.
We know that he is the First, so it can be unsaid.
He could be The Arctic Cat, but if his sponsor changes, he might have to be renamed The Polaris.
He could be The Sloper.
Or The Fisherman.
Or The Dad.
Perhaps Hunk Todd.
The Hunk.
The Todd.
I think the best is Todd. Just Todd.
Future Todd husbands of Presidents can be The Second Todd, The Third Todd...
Ooooh, I like that. New term coined.
Now you understand how Governor Palin and her staff felt as they were surrounded by these malicious liars intent on slandering and destroying them. Now you know how it feels. Think about that, my friend. It feels awful, doesn't it? Imagine it multiplied by 100.
I didn't mind it at first, but at about the ten millionth "my friends" it began to wear on my nerves.
And have you noticed that Sarah is cutting back on "Also"?
Wow. LOL!
You're a dangerous person Allie!
We need to draft Kevin Dowd to start a blog debunking his sister's crap every week!
Come on, Kevin. The Republic needs you to start writing!

She really is dangerous and FBI, IRS, SS and anyone who knows the truth should spill it about her. She is a danger to this country and our President.

Please turn this sick person in to the FBI and SS, Gryphen.
This isn't normal behavior. The security of our nation rests upon us, as frankly, the right was full of glee last night when they thought we had been hit. It was sickening.
As we know, DHS warns us all about right wing radicals being the domestic terrorist threat we need to watch out for. The above poster is a prime example of the sorts of beliefs these dangerous people have.
Thank you.
It appears that there's someone who's been commenting there going by "Sarah2012" that's got them all riled up.
From the Dowd article- good reading by the way.
Deficit spending and sex scandals are not a good recipe for success.
Unless your running for office in California... or New York... or DC...
That was a delayed Christmas present from the wiser of the Dowd clan, the editors should be on vacation more often
How stingy they are to take no pride in a hometown citizen.
That is all very well and good about the person that has got them riled up but to include me in that is heinous. It just goes to show that they just get their facts wrong and spew hatred. I thought that "liberals" were the peaceful people. Regardless, I just should have ignored it and since I do not post in that site, there is no way that my IP address would show up. I guess I got upset because some members of my family have high security clearance because of their careers and any kind of problem directed at me, might in some way have repercussions on them.
I know that Crystal Callgirl person is a low class individual with all the F-bombs she includes in her posts so I just ignore her. But it is ironic how "free speech" only pertains to them and people who follow their party line but no one else.
I have to say that I admire Sarah Palin for having the fortitude to ignore the comments (because you know that someone would have told her what is being said since I do not believe for one second that she would stoop to read that blog). I guess that is one of the reasons she is admired. All I know that all they have accomplished by this little diatribe and threats is to make sure that if Sarah Palin wins the nomination on 2012, I will work 24/7 so that she is elected and then let's see who will have the SS knocking at their door.
Ben Stien? "Expelled" Ben Stien?
Yea, you'd think they'd be more proud. I don't get it.
libearls don't know anything but what the MSM tells them and because of that they think they are the smart ones.
I really like Kevin, the brother!!! He should be the one writing the articles all the time.
MM,
Yep, that Ben Stein!
