Open Thread (Update: Palin and Clinton Virtually Tie for "Most Admired Woman in 2009" Title)

-Dan Riehl slaps both Andrew Sullivan and Richard Feinberg on the issue of Palin and energy. Her critics cannot seem to make up their minds as to ACES: one side claims that the legislation is an onerous burden on oil companies while the other side claims that it's a give-away for oil companies. One argument is inconsistent with the other but then again, we shouldn't be surprised considering that consistency isn't a strong suit of Sarah Palin's critics.

-Congressman Steve King from Iowa predicts that Governor Palin will run for the presidency in 2012 and has changed his mind as to the impact that her resignation would have on her chances. Here's the video of King's remarks (starting at around the 24-minute mark).

-Going Rogue was Amazon's top-selling book over the holiday season.

What's going on?

Update: According to a USA Today/Gallup poll conducted earlier this month, Governor Palin and Hillary Clinton were virtually tied on the "most admired woman" question for 2009. Clinton barely finished ahead of Palin for the 2009 title, after winning the 2008 title fairly easily. Though we already had our 2010 predictions thread, I'll add a prediction: Hillary's eight-year run at the top ends next year.

Here is a great article at The Times of London Online, its not about Sarah but about Afghanistan, I think all of you will find it very fascinating!: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/Afghanistan/article6969122.ece

Well, I still have to finish the week of Dec 6 - 10, but you'll get the point.

Max Baucus was sober!
Does this mean they're all sober?
Yikes!

What does he sound like when he's drunk??!!

IS Barney Frank usually sober??!?!!

CruelaDev,  December 29, 2009 11:46 PM

I don't think it matters anymore...None of them make sense...Drunk or Sober!

Whitney,  December 29, 2009 11:46 PM

Thanks for the links, Tommy! In reading Andrew Sullivan's linkage to the Mudflats, I ventured over there for one of the first times (yuck). There was a stark contrast that I noticed between Mudflats blog and the C4P blog, I mean aside from the political ideology and good writing. When C4P writes a post about policies and legislations, they provide these nice little things known as links and references. For all we know, Fineberg could be pulling these "facts" out of his butt!

Huge numbers for Amazon.

"<span>Lazard Capital's Colin Sebastian called Amazon's holiday performance "remarkable," and said Amazon's 51 percent growth in peak-day items ordered and about 25 percent growth in peak-day unit shipments pointed to further market share gains."</span>

And it that environment"
"<span>Amazon said its best-selling items over the holiday season other than the Kindle includedApple's iPod Touch, Nintendo's Wii Fit Plus with balance board, Sarah Palin's book "Going Rogue" and men's Levi's 501 jeans."</span>

1 pant
3 gadgets
1 story about a human being.

Amazon stock FMV up a few Billion on Monday.

Yes, Billion.

Wow.

Sarah, America's Billion Dollar Girl.

;-)

Think what happened to her value in 60 days. Her speaking fee value. Her next book contract. Her Going Rogue movie rights. Maybe it doubled or tripled or...   Wow.

And the book royalties will be ebough to buy the whole family a Frosty at Wendy's.

Reports from B&N, BAM, Costco, Hastings, Bj's, and WalMart will be interesting.

Ceejay,  December 29, 2009 11:49 PM

Got the audiobook tonight, like to hear Sarah's voice, it is so clear, no um's and ah's in the bunch, already had the book, but the audio is even better!

Did you all read this article about Obama being tired?

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20091229/D9CSP5F82.html

"<span><span><span><span><span>Aides who have known Obama since before he took office say he seems more sober than he did a year ago, but also increasingly focused on the issues facing the country"</span></span></span></span></span>

Before any screenshoters get wee-weed up, the large print is due to cut-and-paste, and yes, I know what the word "sober" means in this context. Nonetheless.

Being President should make you tired, no matter who you are! I don't know why this is news.

Hey, Bill, that "Borders 2012" comic is going to be my new avatar in '10!  Thanks!  You did a great job on your project!  I clicked on the link beneath the pix of Piper and Trigg and got a "404" error.

2010 goals:

For Obama and the Far Left: distract Palin's supporters, distort her positions and and diminish her capacity

For Palin supporters: maintain focus on destroying Obama and the Far Left and its agenda in response to the goals of Obama and the Far Left to destroy us

So a third of Republicans (Gallup includes GOP-leaning indies as Republicans I believe) picked her as the woman they most admire.  I think it's safe to assume that this third would vote for her in a primary contest.

Also, if the Broncos don't make the playoffs, I'm blaming her.
And I can not read because of her.
Our dogs are barking, and I'm sick of it, Governor Palin!

Kind of ironic that Going Rogue was right up there with the Levi's 501 Jeans.  I'd guess Levi's aren't too popular in their household.

I still don't get Kindle.  I much prefer to have the actual book in my hands.

If I was her I don't know if I'd want to be the most admired woman in a mainstream poll like that.  You don't want to get too comfortable as part of the establishment.  Maintain that outsider status.  Although "Palin most admired woman" would be a nice headline I guess.

I just saw where Amazon also has a yearly best-sellers chart and Going Rogue is currently #5 for the year behind The Lost Symbol, The Shack(paperback), Liberty And Tyranny and Breaking Dawn.  Interesting how conservative or Christian books make up 3 of the top 5, and how the top 2 NF books are both conservative.  #2 in NF behind Liberty And Tyranny.
At BN.com it's #2 for the year behind only The Lost Symbol and #1 in NF.  It was the #1 book overall at Amazon for October, November and December.  Especially impressive since that's the busiest season for books when al lthe big name authors released titles and the heaviest shopping is done.

Very impressive also considering how late in the year it was released.  Symbol had an extra 2 months, for example.  Liberty And Tyranny an extra 8 months.  The Shack and Breaking Dawn had the whole year.  There's still 2 days left in the year so it may move up a notch yet.

For comparison, Audacity of Hope finished at #12 overall in 2006, its best year.  My Life by Bill Clinton also finished at #5 in 2004(although it came out in June, not November)and Living History finished at #17 in 2003.

PatrickinOH,  December 30, 2009 1:35 AM

24 of course.  Get with the program Nancy!  I did nominate myself most likely to reference 24.  Geez! ;)

If you want to know more about him watch seasons 4 and 5.

What's your  guess for  tomorrow's USA Today ranking?  It's looking pretty tight with the Lost Symbol for this week's list.

lmg,  December 30, 2009 1:43 AM

Ah bye lotsa books. Keep 'em thar in the out house, right next to the good ol' Sears Catalog. Mmmm, feels good and does the job, IYKWIMAITTYD.

Anonymous,  December 30, 2009 1:46 AM

Also, how about on the most admired man side of things Glenn Beck is tied for 4th place at 2% with The Pope, Billy Graham and Bill Gates, only 1 pt behind Nelson Mandela.  Glenn Beck?  Tied with The Pope?

On the women's side last year it was Clinton 20 Palin 11 and this year it was 16-15.  If she had remained as Governor I think she'd be at #1.  Oh well.  Nice to see Oprah and Michelle Obama bringing up the rear at 8 and 7 respectively.

Another year with hopefully another book, and some notable speeches and and campaigning and hopefully a good result in November and she could be the most admired woman heading into 2011.  Not a bad place to be.

gelston the knowitall,  December 30, 2009 1:48 AM

An interesting picture that I have not seen before.
this is from hillbuzz.
it shows an appparent large scar on the side of Mr. Obama's head. Scroll to bottom.

How many seasons are there?:)

PatrickinOH,  December 30, 2009 1:56 AM

Yes in season 6.  There are currently 7 with season 8 premiering next month.

Nancy,  December 30, 2009 1:59 AM

Hhhmmm. That is interesting! Do we dare pollute the thread with speculation on what is up with that?

Nancy,  December 30, 2009 2:00 AM

Huh? I must have watched more seasons than I thought.:) Thanks, Patrick!:)

PatrickinOH,  December 30, 2009 2:02 AM

Your welcome Nancy. :)

Heh. I actually asked her about movie rights:) I hope it goes to film, documentary or otherwise. Of course, she did not answer me directly. I just wanted to try to say something original.

How does the value of Tiger Woods sexcapades compare with Letterman sex?

"<span>n court papers filed Tuesday, Robert "Joe" Halderman's lawyer cited published reports that Woods paid an alleged mistress millions of dollars to stay silent. Attorney Gerald Shargel suggested that since the woman hasn't been charged with a crime, Halderman shouldn't be, either.</span>
<span>
<p>"Evidence of celebrity misdeeds has a significant fair market value," lawyer Gerald Shargel wrote. "... Evidence of such misdeeds is routinely suppressed through private business arrangement.""

BetseyRoss,  December 30, 2009 8:41 AM

All I can say is that it doesn't work.  I have been more than annoyed with Obama for two years.  Yet, there he is---still.

johnmd,  December 30, 2009 8:45 AM

Yes I did the Sarahpac special and I just got my book yesterday. And It was signed not the sticker.  I waited until the last day to donate and order it. You should have yours soon.

BetseyRoss,  December 30, 2009 8:53 AM

Somebody decided to try to go after Letterman.  That's how the whole stink began.  A jealous boyfriend pressed charges and the can of worms was opened for all to see.  There is a whole bunch of work place sexual harrassment stuff going on with Letterman.  Tiger Woods just can't keep it in his pants.  Go Elin!  Take all of his money!  Same with Regina Letterman.  Take all of his money.  He isn't that funny.

JeanA,  December 30, 2009 10:32 AM

I ordered my book on Nov. 23rd. Still waiting.

hrh,  December 30, 2009 10:52 AM

Well, they put it at #2, but other than that, it's pretty comical:

1. failing
2. quit
3. with help from writer
4. her reading

condemnation, innuendo, patronization, and wrong facts all in one sentence

That about sums up journalism as practiced today.

johnfromcanada,  December 30, 2009 1:09 PM

I've had this notion for the last month or so that Obama might not run for re-election in '12. I haven't checked out the video above yet, but anyone can see that his is weary and tired  almost to the point of distinterest. So it wouldn't surprise me if he chooses not to run again. In that case, it would likely be Hillary vs. Sarah in '12.  Wouldn't that be something!!

Anonymous,  December 30, 2009 2:20 PM

It is laughable that Hillary Clinton is the most admired woman in 2009.  What exactly did Hillary Clinton achieve in 2009?  She is supposed to be the country's top diplomat, but was effectively sidelined by the Obama-Axelrod-Emanuel inner circle.  She disappeared from the radar for months.  When she finally emerged, she got into an unseemly spat trading childish insults with North Korea.
PyongYang: "We cannot but regard Mrs. Clinton as a funny lady as she likes to utter such rhetoric, unaware of the elementary etiquette in the international community. Sometimes she looks like a primary schoolgirl and sometimes a pensioner going shopping."
Disagreement with North Korea over substantive issues is to be expected, but trading childish insults is beneath the dignity of the Secratary of State.  Her predecessor, Condi Rice, never got herself into such petty antics.
Then of course there is that memorable event in Congo where she flew off the rocker at a student's clumsily-worded question.  Her testiness and irritability again highlighted how unsuitable she was as the nation's top diplomat.  Most Admired Woman indeed.
