The 'Palin = racist' smear

It's been an eventful few weeks. While ordinary Americans camped out overnight in the freezing cold for a place in line at her book tour stops, liberal America has been busy throwing whatever dirt it could find at the one person they fear could derail the Obama project in 2012. Andrew Sullivan went into a Trigtruther spasm with Joy Behar, and Palin-stalker Joe McGinniss tried to get her convicted for using a private jet to fly from Florida to Washington. Even Andree McLeod chipped in by filing another handful of ethics complaints.

The race hustlers were at it too. Since the election of Barack Obama, America is supposed to be a post-racial country, but that didn't stop them from twisting a seemingly innocent statement by Chuck Heath about his daughter's time in Hawaii and presenting it as evidence that the Governor was somehow deeply racist. Earl Ofari Hutchinson, for example, used his platform on the Huffington Post to convict her of "an uncomfortable racism".

For those of you who don't know him: Hutchinson has form on Palin-bashing. He's the same guy who tried to stir up the "Palin didn't want to hire African Americans" story during last year's election campaign. A bogus claim, as the Governor's spokeswoman explained at the time:

Sharon Leighow, communications spokesperson in the Alaska governor’s office, disputed the allegation. She said that Palin’s press secretary was part African-American and that two of her senior advisors were Filipino and Korean. Leighow was also adamant that Palin did not hire staff persons based on color, but solely on talent and skill. As she put it, “Governor Palin is totally color-blind.”

During that same period, Hutchinson also dismissed Todd Palin as "no poster boy for Yup'ik Eskimo's or other Native Alaskans" - an echo of the infamous 'Palin's greatest hypocrisy is in her pretense that she's a woman' statement by militant feminist Wendy Doniger.

Now he's at it again, suggesting that Palin transferred from Hawaii to Idaho because unlike the multicultural Aloha State, Idaho is "mostly white, rural, hardline conservative... a fertile nesting ground for an assorted array of kooky, far out racist paramilitary groups."

Whatever.

I'm going to make a radical suggestion here: let's look at what the Governor herself has to say about this episode. We turn to Going Rogue, page 42:

I kicked off college by taking a semester to thaw out; along with Tilly and two other girlfriends, we flew to Hawaii for our freshman year of college. Our intention was to play basketball there, but we made it to only a few tryouts and then decided we’d better concentrate on our studies . . . and the beach. It turned out that Hawaii was a little too perfect. Perpetual sunshine isn’t necessarily conducive to serious academics for eighteen-year-old Alaska girls. Besides, we were homesick for mountains, cooler seasons, and even snow. After that first semester, we realized we’d better transfer back to something closer to our own reality so we could actually earn our degrees.

Tilly and I packed up for a more conventional and affordable campus, choosing Idaho because it was much like Alaska yet still let us be “Outside” (Alaskans’ alternate term for the Lower 48).

Basically, Palin says she couldn't really afford life on the beach, and she was homesick - homesick for the mountains, and for the cooler Alaska clime. By the way, that's the same explanation given by the Governor's friend mentioned in the quote above, Kim 'Tilly' Ketchum, in a 2008 interview with the LA Times:

"When you're used to having some cooler weather, you get tired of the heat," Ketchum said. "We went one semester there before we realized we needed to go someplace else."

They discovered to their shock and amazement that they were cold climate people who couldn't really handle the sunshine, and decided to transfer to northern, mountainous Idaho. Big deal, huh?

Obviously, this doesn't stop Hutchinson from laying out a series of racism charges, some all too familiar (the 'Gov. Palin didn't want to hire African-Americans' canard, and the 'Palin's white support base is a bastion of latent racism' meme that Chris Matthews has been promoting during the book tour), some completely bizarre. He suggests, for example, that during the campaign both Palin and her office were "mute" on a number of racist emails sent by Alaska state employees. Could that be because the emails in question weren't actually sent until after the election? Sure seems a reasonable explanation to me. Palin's spokesman Bill McAllister did comment on the emails, by the way, stating that "this is a confidential personnel and disciplinary matter that has nothing to do with the governor's office."

Enough already with the race hustling. Palin's words and actions speak for themselves. She hired African-Americans and Asian-Americans not because of some politically correct urge to fill an Earl Ofari Hutchinson approved quota but because they were simply the best people for the job. She also married a man who is half Yupik eskimo. In her book, she proudly speaks of her daughters as the next in line of a series of "beautiful Yupik women". It may not be enough to convince Hutchinson, but it's enough for normal, sane Americans to see that these "Palin = racist" stories are just a bunch of politically motivated baloney.

ladydawnelle,  December 10, 2009 9:20 AM

before I even read any further I must say

I DARE ANYONE TO CALL ME A RACIST SIMPLY BECAUSE I CHOOSE A STRONG QUALIFIED LEADER OVER A WUSSIFIED  NARCISSIST WITH MOMMY ISSUES AND A PROBLEM UNDERSTANDING HIS OWN WORTH!

(then let them see my beautiful daughter and tell me I'm a racist)

actually a long long time ago I actually thought Odrama was pretty cool.  Until he opened his mouth in the primaries and started his misogyny against Hillary.  It became apparent real fast that this guy was nothing but a chicago S Side PUNK (and I was born in GARY IND) so I know what I'm talking about!  And the pieces kept falling into place, first Rev. Wright, then Pfleger, Moss, Meeks, Ayers, Rezko, Blago,  JEzzzzzzzzzzzzz it was SO OBVIOUS!  (I thought)   WHO ARE THESE POD PEOPLE?   lol really?  AND when Hillary kept winning primaries and losing caucuses we KNEW the fix was in against her where the PEOPLE had a chance to vote - she won.  He was proving his ability to steal even then!!
ARGH!!!

ladydawnelle,  December 10, 2009 9:26 AM

Ur right!  And I think had it been SARAH that was robbed of the primaries (like Hillary was) our Sarah would have STOOD up and SAID SOMETHING!!!!

all of my old DEM heroes have done nothing but cave again and again and it's beyond depressing.  what a bunch of wimps, really.  no wonder the south side punks took over so easy

ARGH - getting myself worked up too early

ladydawnelle,  December 10, 2009 9:26 AM

of this I keep praying!!

cookboy,  December 10, 2009 9:32 AM

Pod people, or poo people?

cookboy,  December 10, 2009 9:34 AM

This is nothing. The bloom is off he left wing rose, and only those who cultivated it are unable to see that it's wilting. From frost.

ladydawnelle,  December 10, 2009 9:36 AM

lol @ poo people

they're from outer space (and they do stink)

riley4palin,  December 10, 2009 9:43 AM

Keep in mind that The Huffington Post was awarded press credentials at the White House this year.  As a matter of fact, I believe it was the first time ever in the history of Presidential News Conferences that a blogger was called on by a sitting President.

Obama must think very highly of The Huffington Post; even more so than REAL news organizations like FoxNews.

Good thing that this dipshit who wrote this racist trash about Governor Palin has the full backing of the White House.

TangledThorns,  December 10, 2009 9:48 AM

This is just more of the Left crying racism as they continue to lose the debate against Sarah Palin and the Tea Party movement.

GAHanson,  December 10, 2009 9:48 AM

All this BS the media types come up with have as much substance as smoke rings.  They fact that they are out there promoting this stuff just shows how desparate, and pathetic they are.  Just take a look at any comment section to a Palin related story, and you see the same old BS left over from 2008, they're trapped in a time warp, Palin has left them behind in a cloud of dust.  You would think that they could come up with something original.  Axelrod must be too busy to write them a new script.

johnmd,  December 10, 2009 10:06 AM

Well the book tour is about over, Sarah will become invisible  for a month or two except for a facebook posting or two. Does anyone know of a good doctor to treat Palin withdraw other than jimbeam and bud chasers.

Mrs. Terry Johnson,  December 10, 2009 10:10 AM

That race card is getting pretty dog eared about now.  It's all a diversion from real racism... should it be real.  All this calling wolf... how does that serve Obama or any "race" leader?

Also, it would be interesting if Dems or Repubs play 'bros before hos" in the 2012 election.  Talk about your "Sporty Spice" backlash!

Bill in Baltimore,  December 10, 2009 10:10 AM

there's plenty to study up on . . .re-read every C4P article (and every comment) from the start of the book tour . . . twice

when that is done, read every article RAM ever wrote . . . then work your way through all the C4P contributors (alphabetically) . . . plus all comments

During your breaks . . . read Going Rogue.

While driving . . . listen to Going Rogue on CD . . .

any questions ?

terri,  December 10, 2009 10:15 AM

^^^was just thinking that myself. Accourding to Sarah's "event calender", today's the last day...right???
There hasn't been anything added that we don't know about has there?

She does have some speaking engagements coming up next year. The Tea party keynote speech in February, the "bowling" one (that still cracks me up), but not till June.
Anything else?

ladydawnelle,  December 10, 2009 10:15 AM

well that won't work for me - I'm disabled and take medications that have kept me sober for over a decade - borrrrrring!  lol kidding!  But I will miss seeing her.  I love all the videos and stories!  It's been GREAT!

johnmd,  December 10, 2009 10:19 AM

Where has RAM ?Does anyone know.

lonestar,  December 10, 2009 10:19 AM

Remember,  these are the same people going after Tiger Woods not for cheating on his wife, but for not cheating with black women.

This racism cr*p drives me nuts.

But I see that Chrissy Matthews made a cameo appearance in JL's very skillful take-down.

Since Chrissy has not only failed to apologize for his stupid, irresponsible, hateful "dog whistle for racism" and "cul-de-sacs of [whatever]" comments from several months ago with Kathleen What's-her-name and Saloon Joan on his inane PMSDNC show..."SpitBall"...or whatever...

it's WAY past time to reprise...the CHRISSY SONG!

"I've lost that TING-lin' FEEL-in'...whoa that TING-lin' FEEL-in'.
I've lost that TING-lin' FEEL-in', now it's GONE..GOne..gone...whoa-whoa-whoa.
Dun..dun.dun..dun.dun..dun-dun-dun..."

Take it away ladydawnelle, Nancy, or anyone else who wants to add the verse.  Just have fun.  LOTS of fun.

RINO-Hunter,  December 10, 2009 11:04 AM

He's half asian, why don't they go after him for not cheating with any asian women?

RINO-Hunter,  December 10, 2009 11:04 AM

The logging conference and the chamber of commerce event.

RINO-Hunter,  December 10, 2009 11:05 AM

I'm hoping she hits the sunday shows to talk about climategate too.

lol now see what you did Oakie?
I'll never be able to enjoy that song again

johnmd,  December 10, 2009 11:26 AM

I'm not a fan of the talk shows , they are going to drive the topic in the direction they want and the same old negitave will be mixed in for ratings.unless there is a strict list of restricted subjects  and then they would still bring them up. Levi ,the huge amount of protesters at the book stops , the eggs and tomato incidents the no media access, use of the airplane , you know the theme.
I think she needs to post a list of  rep fund raisers  in states where there are senators up for re election and blue dog congressional  seats before the votes on health care and cap and tax. That would give them more incentive when they vote Fear of the Cudda in your district may open their ears.

Whitney,  December 10, 2009 11:33 AM

The idea that conservatives are racists lacks logic. Racism is the idea that one views someone less highly solely based upon their race. It's a form of prejudice. This automatic assumption that conservatives, including Gov. Palin, are racist is a form of pre-judging conservatives. As Joshua so articulately stated, Sarah has shown herself to not be racist by any stretch of the imagination.

Many liberals may not think my next statement holds water since I'm white, but when MLK Jr said he dreamed of the day when his kids would not be judged by their race but by the content of their character, what we see in our culture is likely not what he envisioned. People should be judged by who they are--the content of their character--be it positively or negatively. People shouldn't be judged, positively or negatively, by how much melanin they possess.

ladydawnelle,  December 10, 2009 11:38 AM

u know I'm joking right?  ;-)

ladydawnelle,  December 10, 2009 11:46 AM

but you KNOW women understand prejudice!  right?  I sure do.

ladydawnelle,  December 10, 2009 11:48 AM

another group that understands is the disabled (which is partially why I won't apply for a disabled tag for my car)  I don't like the way people judge.

terri,  December 10, 2009 11:50 AM

john,
I think she will the fund raising bit but, eventually she will have to go on those shows. She won't be able to ignore them the rest of her political carreer. It might even give her some cred with those that are "fence sitting" about her.
I think Sarah has learned how to do a good interview and keep the topics on point. Since the infamous Couric interview i haven't seen a "bad" interview yet....have you?
Keep the faith, Sarah can certainly hold her own on "Meet the Depressed" and "Slay the Nation".   lol

ladydawnelle,  December 10, 2009 11:55 AM

seriously I'll never catch up!!  lol

Saw that she is #1 on the USA Today list for the 3rd straight week.  Keep in mind the USA Today list is for all books, fiction and nonfiction, hardback and paperback.  They don't separate it out like the NYT does.  3 straight weeks at #1 is a pretty big accomplishment.

According to USA Today among political figures only Colin Powell had 3 straight weeks at #1 with his book(or 3 total weeks at #1 even nonconsecutively)way back in 1995.  Bill Clinton had 2 weeks with My Life and 1 week with his other book, Giving.  Hillary Clinton had 1 week with her book.  Obama had 0 weeks at #1.

So, 3 weeks ties the record for most weeks at #1 by a political figure, and it did it over the holiday season which is the heaviest selling time for books and when a number of top authors are all out with new books.

Yay me, she must be saying.

The "Racist" grenade is difused. Using it's become like an Obama/Henry Waxman type sissy who bights when they're getting their butt kicked in a fight. They get their butt kicked even worse and people watching want to kick it too.

Not worth anyone's time. I hope they keep it up!

CharterOakie,  December 10, 2009 12:37 PM

lady - just think of it as a completely different song (to the same tune).

But I'll be very disappointed if you or Nancy don't come through.  ;  )

PatrickinOH,  December 10, 2009 12:38 PM

I have talked to her on facebook chat and last week before I signed off I said please tell Sarah I said hi and tell her sorry I couldn't make any of the book signings in Ohio due to final exams, no response for 10 minutes, then I said I knew you wouldn't take the bait on that one RAM, so I suspect she is working with Sarah while still living in LA

PatrickinOH,  December 10, 2009 12:41 PM

It has been my experience that people on the left are the ones who are really prejudiced, they feel that minorities can't make it on their own without their help, if I was a minority that would be a slap in my face, and the way some of them talk about Trig, it is obvious that they would rather get rid of handicapped people because they are too much of a burden on society

Bill in Baltimore,  December 10, 2009 1:13 PM

that dancing with the stars was funny . . .

MarkRNY,  December 10, 2009 1:51 PM

And one day minorities will wake up to this fact. The Left is a pestilence to them, the worst kind because they're viewed as their advocates. Many have, but the MSM gives them no voice.

As to the handicapped, the Left's solution to all rpoblems is fewer people. They care for the disabled and downtrodden so much they want there to be fewer of them, no matter what that entails. This is why the Life question is THE question imo. They won't stop.

PatrickinOH,  December 10, 2009 2:25 PM

Mark I said this yesterday but I think the most damaging legacy of the American left is eugenics, read Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg and you will see what I mean, we need to hang that legacy around thier necks whenever possible, it is only people on the lest who I hear say that we need to have less children because it just means more carbon emissions, Hitler got inspiration for his eugenics programs from the American Progresssive Movement, Hitler even once sent a letter to Margaret Sanger congratulating her on the great work she and the progressives were doing in America

Tommy Report,  December 10, 2009 2:58 PM

Guest,

Do you have a link for Powell?

eclecticak,  December 10, 2009 3:25 PM

It seems to that the commenters at C4P alone blow the whole "racist white supporters" meme out of the water. Beleive that the varied supporters/posters here include African-American, Hispanic and Asian persons as well as a number of persons of mixed heritage.

Love That Lady,  December 10, 2009 5:35 PM

These people have become so enraged with the fact that Sarah is still standing and will continue to stand that they have lost the <span>little</span> moral integrity they had left.

Allie,  December 10, 2009 8:43 PM

I am so tired about this racist thing.  Someone wrote on another blog that she was not racist because she "hated Obama's white half as much as his black half".  I would not go so far as hate because that is very strong, but I have taken to tell people when they call me racist that I dislike his white half as much as the black half and they just look at me with a look that could be best described as a deer caught up in the headlights.  They really have no answer and I love it.

JP,  December 10, 2009 10:32 PM

Well, I was wondering when the race meme would raise it's ugly head.  Dios mio!!  *sigh*
Is there anything that has not been tossed at Sarah?
This guy's reaching way down low in the lefty bag 'o cheap tricks.
And to attempt to set the record straight only makes one appear defensive.

I remember the first time I was made aware of race and my ethnicity...I wish I could say that it was pleasant or earth shattering.
Sixth grade.  I was the new kid in school (about a coupla months in).  A girl in my class called me a dirty mexican in front of the entire class.  The fact that we shared the same ethnicity seemed lost on her.  I was puzzled, but amused.  I knew why she did it.  I had not shared my bubblegum (Bubbelicious!!  Watermelon!!) with her.  I found her rude and a bully so I had not offered (hey, I was 11 yo), and she was used to taking from whomever she chose to get from and she was enraged that I was not giving it up (she didn't know that this transplanted Texan was used to mixing it up with boy cousins!).  I asked her why she called me that when she was a "mexican" too.  She replied that it was because I spoke spanish and she didn't (waaay weird).  I laughed.  I did not understand that there were people who saw differences like language and skin color first and made negative character judgements based on a name.  I wasn't raised that way and it was foolish to me.  She kept repeating it several times, thinking that I would get embarrassed eventually because she hoped that the other students would pick up the chant.  They didn't...she had bullied them too, I later learned.  I kept chuckling, shaking my head.  Teacher finally broke it up, by telling her to chill.  Eighth grade.  Lisa and I were now friends.  She apologized for being a butt and asked if I would teach her spanish.  Go figure.

Whenever someone tosses out the race card, I remember this incident.  It just means they got nothing left and are desperate.  Bullies.  Somebody might mention to them that the word has lost its impact...Obama and his supporters have played it out!!

Peace, y'all!
