The Trig Truther Hypocrisy Files
In her Facebook statement yesterday, Gov. Palin made it clear that while she doesn't deny anyone's right to ask about Barack Obama's birth certificate, she herself has no desire to do so:
[A]t no point – not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews – have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States.Together with her description of the thinking behind these questions as "weird conspiracy-theory freaky" stuff, it seems a fairly straightforward position.
End of story? Not if the mad hatter brigade of the liberal blogosphere has anything to do with it!
Huffington Post: "Sarah's palling around with conspiracists!"
DailyKos: "Palin goes birther!"
First observation: no she doesn't.
Second observation: it's for remarks like these that the word 'chutzpah' was invented.
For DailyKos of all blogs to come out with an accusation about Gov. Palin "going birther" beggars belief. Never mind the fact that she clearly isn't doing anything of the sort, it's the shamelessness of it all. We're talking about the same website that started the whole Trig Truther conspiracy with a piece of filth published on the 30th of August of last year (they've since pulled the story in a pathetic attempt to cover their tracks, but there are still plenty of copies out there): "Well, Sarah, I’m calling you a liar. And not even a good one. Trig Paxson Van Palin is not your son. He is your grandson. The sooner you come forward with this revelation to the public, the better."
Memo to DailyKos: people who publish garbage like that, should shut the hell up.
Nor would I think it a wise thing for the same Huffington Post which recently stated that "if she's considering another run for public office it's absolutely fair game for Oprah [to ask Gov. Palin if she really is Trig's mom]" to say anything at all about the subject of conspiracy theories.
We're sure there'll be other media outlets which will feel compelled to make some sort of grand statement about Gov. Palin's remarks. Fine. We have their idiotic Trig Truther quotes and "is asking the question itself unfair?" statements on file - The Washington Post, New York Times, LA Times, CNN, Anchorage Daily News, you name it. If they really want to go down that road, we're ready for them.
PS: Of course we have a separate hard disk full of Trig Truther quotes from Andrew 'Mad Dog' Sullivan over at the once reputable Atlantic. And yes, that's the same Andrew Sullivan who was invited to Washington DC for a small dinner party with then president-elect Obama. Talk about palling around with conspiracists!
PS II @ Ed Morrissey: No Ed, saying that people can ask whatever they want but that personally you would never ask that question, not least because you don't do such "weird conspiracy-theory freaky" stuff isn't "the same thing as Truthers saying that all they’re doing is “asking questions”." Gov. Palin wasn't asking any questions. All she did was answer someone else's questions truthfully. Unusual that, I know, but then Palin is an unusual politician.
You want to make the point that according to conventional political wisdom she shouldn't have answered RH's questions, fine, make that point. You clearly don't understand what sort of politician Gov. Palin is, but you're free to make it. What you're not free to do, though, is use faulty logic to compare her position to that of the Trig Truthers - or any kind of Truthers. That's way off base.

It's amazing how the liberal media will go after those who question Obama's citizenship, even in the slightest. Yet, they do know nothing on who questions who Trig's real mother is.
Good Job Joshua,
Some have suggested that Governor Palin should use this as an example of how she needs to “dodge” questions. I absolutely disagree, on the contrary, this is the silver lining of this story. Governor Palin does not dodge questions, period!. If she’s asked something she answers. You may not always like her response and you may not always agree with her, but you will always know what she believes, thinks and where she stands on any topic and issue. And that is a quality you will not find in any politician or public servant anywhere in the world!
Governor Palin, we like you the way you are, now DON’T change!
Joshua, I agree with most of what you wrote, but have to disagree with your second PS.
I read Morrissey's comment and he was criticizing the way Gov. Palin's initial answers on the radio program seemed to give credence to the Birther movement, not saying that she should not have answered the question. His point, I think, is that if the Facebook statement is her true opinion, that is what she should have said on the radio, not things like people were asking the questions and rightfully so, or that asking about the birth certificate was a fair question. Whether she meant it or not, it does make her appear as supporting ther Birthers. And, I have to agree with him. As I posted on another thread, she gave a poorly worded answer that I think was at least partly designed not to offend the host and audience, who do support, at least in part, the Birther ideas. All in all, she messed this one up.

I think this shows how psychologically intolerant some of these folks are; it matters not that I agree that the rumor is false; I must, upon every reference, react in the same emotional tone that they do, and denounce the rumor as the most outrageously outrageous outrage of all time.

I haven't read all the comments, so that I could give my unabashed opinion on this. My feeling is that we all love Palin, but we cannot suspend our common sense and rationality when it comes to her actions. Granted Palin was simply answering a question, but the question was one that she has to sidestep, precisely because the only game her enemies have is to consign her to the fringe. Palin will not be undone by her "quitting" from the governorship. It won't make sense if she's the GOP nominee, to keep harping on her quitting. In fact her credibility on her "reloading" would be vindicated. Her undoing will come from her enemies consigning her to the fringe. This is what they have been trying to do, but have fail to, because Palin has never given them anything to make that case. Making a Palin candidacy unthinkable is their objective. Palin's objective in this book tour has been to blow that whole assertion up in their face with the book sales, the crowds at her appearances, etc. This whole birther thing is an arrow in her opponents quiver that she gave them, fair or not. THESE PEOPLE DON'T PLAY FAIR.
With all of that said, I would hope that the governor becomes wise to the possibilty that she can be harmed by those on the right as much as she has been by those on the left. She has to be as much on guard going on these shows like Humphrey's and Beck to the possiblity of a trap question as she would on Katie Couric.
The bottomline is that the biggest threat to Palin is to be consigned to the fringe and these folks want to consign her and the Tea Party movement to the fringe by tying them to these innane conspiracy theories. This is their motivation to connect birthers with Tea Partyers, so they can discredit that movement. They would love nothing more than to try the same with Palin. Palin is our hope and she can bring to the mainstream (because she is mainstream) the Tea Party movement to then upend the political order in D.C. But she won't be able to accomplish this if she is considered fringe by the public at large.
So the Daily Kos and Huffington Post are trying to run with this meme. In related news the sun rose this morning, even at approximately the same time it did yesterday.
Ridiculous.
Thanks Jim for posting that NRO piece, that was well written.
“Whether she meant it or not, it does make her appear as supporting ther Birthers”
No it does not. What she does support, is the right for people to ask questions, whatever the question is. She clearly says she wouldn’t go there, other people can do as they please.
“designed not to offend the host and audience, who do support, at least in part, the Birther ideas”
Designed? She was asked a question she didn’t expect, and answered it off the cuff. It’s not like she had time to think a reply or how to word it. While worded differently, both her reply and Facebook post reflect the same position.
By the way, people seem to forget that Governor Palin is a private citizen, holds no elected office and is not running for anything, she can say or do whatever she wants no matter how controversial. If she want's to believe that Obama was born on Mars and was delivered by aliens it is within her right. Should she decide to run for any elected office in the future, she may need to explain her statements. But, as of now she can do as she pleases with no need to explain or justify.
Your welcome. I think Joshua might want to consider posting the Geraghty piece on the main page.
Sheya read the Geraghty piece I posted below. He makes some really good points.
Joshua, where are you and how can I shake you hand?
Anybody with a Hot Air account, please post the Geraghty piece over at Hot Air, I would but I don't have an account. Thanks
Well said Sheya; I fully agree with your post
I think this will blow over, but it leaves a lingering impression in the mind of some and my concern is that conservatives when given a choice of her and another conservative (Bob McDonnel) who is perceive as not having a perpetual media circus following them, they be tempted to go with the later in 2012.
I don't even care about Obama's birth certificate, but I'm really beginning to resent the idea that if you even bring up Obama's birth certificate, you're a lunatic. Sarah's right -- people have a right to know what's going on if something's not right about our politicians, and Obama seems determined not to let the rest of us know very much about his past. I for one would like to see his college transcripts. We have a right to know about the people governing our country. You don't have to be freaking Orly Taitz to accept that.
Sheya, we'll have to agree to disagree on this. I'm sorry, but, IMO, her answers were poorly worded. Most people hearing them would get the impression she was at least open to the arguments of the Birthers. And you can substitute the word "intended" for "designed" in my comment, if you wish. I think she was trying to finesse the answer, given that Humphries and his audience support Birther questions. And, let's face it, she doesn't do finesse well. Some comparisons between Gov. Palin & Reagan are overdone, but they do share one trait. They tend to get tongue-tied at times. This seems to be what happened here.
I've gotten into this with people here before -- I love Gov. Palin as much as anyone here and will support her whatever she does. But, she makes mistakes, as anyone does, and we have to be willing to recognize it when she does.
BTW, the Geraghty post that jimr3 linked to below lays out my position on this exactly.
Obama was born in hawaii.
trig is sarah's son.
birthers on both sides are loons.
So, again, from the Open Thread I posted:
Sarah should stick to her guns on what she said. She did not say she is a birther, she only said Americans have a right to ask questions.
- It's kind of like her resignation. They didn't believe what she said, they couldn't understand what she said, but her words were understandable now and they have stood the test of time. (poor George Will, perhaps Jane Austen can explain it to him)
Sarah never minces words, her words are true and correct. She does not need to sidestep this at all. What is her point ? "Americans have a right to ask", "Obama ran on a theme of transparency", etc.

What she should do is she should put her response (from last night, it's a good response) on a 3x5 card and memorize it.
Also, when pressed, which she surely will be, she should add that the President ran on a theme of transparency.
and the truth is when you run for President, your life is an open book.
- normal people understand this.
if the MSM run with this, it will only hurt The One

It was a bit of a muddled answer, private citisens has to have the right to ask the Potus for his credentials. That's not supporting any of the strange conspiracy theories, and you dont need at theory behind asking for them. But it's pointless using it as a political strategy.
Sp far none of the big networks have run with it. Fox has on thefoxnation but not fox news. I think Sarah's quick facebook clarified and killed the story.
So I don't check C4P for a day and when I come back Palin is being accused of being a birther?!
I read her facebook statement, but what was she clarifying? Where did she make the initial comments that were misinterpreted?
I have given up on hotair once and for all.
Geraghty Update:
* UPDATE: I was wrong; shortly after the news of Palin's daughter's pregnancy broke, Obama did say,
"I have said before and I will repeat again: People's families are off limits," Obama said. "And people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. So I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18 and how a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn’t be a topic of our politics."
As we saw, however, that good note of dignity and decorum was largely ignored by the more furious corners of the liberal world. Perhaps some readers will conclude I'm being a little unfair to the president, but I feel he could have, and should have, returned to this type of comment later in the campaign, and perhaps rebuked folks like liberal talk-show host Ed Schultz, who asked Larry King on September 2, "What kind of mother is she?" These days, Schultz gets front-row seats for prime-time White House press conferences . . .
http://campaignspot.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ZWVlZGIwMDhjZTNkMDFhYzBjOTI2ZTE2YTlkNWQ5OTQ=
someone asked her about it, I don't know the exact question, but her response was
"Americans have a right to ask questions of their [government]" or something like that
- and from that a new non-story !
We know almost nothing about Barack Obama. From what I so know about him, I would never vote for him to any office because of that and the way he carries himself and the people with whom he surrounds himself. There is no substance to him. Everything about him suggests smoke and mirrors, including his birth certificate.
It doesn't make much difference if he were born in Hawaii or not, his father was not an American citizen. His father never applied for citizenship. His father never stayed in this country after he finished school. That makes Obama not a natural born citizen of the US. That is a Constitutional requirement for becoming president. He does make the age requirement. It doesn't require an attorney to see this. This is all available on the COLB that he put on the internet and any copy of the Constitution. Now there is some doubt if the COLB was indeed a legal document.
These are questions for which we need answers. We needed them before 2008, but we need them more than ever right now. Sarah doesn't have to ask these questions. We do. We have to demand answers. Yes, it needs to be part of the 2012 campaign. Hopefully it won't fester that long. It should be settled. Obama's spending on this indicates he doesn't want us to know. Apparently because we would know that he isn't qualified at the Constitutional level, the very Constitution that he is seeking to do an end run around.
There is another person in this game that no one has mentioned because it is Nancy Pelosi. She is the one that certified that Barack Obama won the Democrat primaries and was indeed the nominee for the Democrat Party. She should have seen that glaring Constitutional mistake. She is not a stupid person so I am assuming that she signed off on his certification knowing full well he did not meet Constitutional requirements. You know that she and Hillary do not get along and she and Hillary both have the Queen Bee Syndrome. Pelosi would not have been able to "take over" and push these atrocious bills through the House. There are 50 Secretaries-of-State (or 57 if you are Obama) that haplessly signed the certification assuming that Nancy Pelosi was OK with Barack Obama being the nominee and he was qualified to be put on the ballot.
As Glenn Beck says, "Question with boldness". We need answers. Shutting up and sitting down just doesn't make sense anymore. It doesn't make much difference what Sarah said or didn't say. We are the ones that need to be asking. We have been ill-informed by the press for way too many years. Calling people "birthers" as a perjoritive is just another way to tell us to sit down and shut up. I want answers and I am assuming many other do too. We have a Constitution or we don't.
In a radio interview yesterday with Rusty Humphries - apparently Humphries entertains birther callers on his show, which she probably didn't know and thusly was caught a little off guard with his questions about the birthers. She will be fine. One day story at most. Her Facebook clarification goes a long way to nip it in the bud.
Thanks for the update!
Im pretty sure the whole birther thing was invented by a liberal to make republicans look stupid. The way I see it, if there was an issue, Hillary Clinton would have gotten it out there in the primary. So people need to move on to constructive criticisms of the president. Its not like there isn't plenty to work with!
This is a self-inflicted wound. Whenever you have to explain or defend yourself against something like this in politics, you know you're not going come out looking good. She has to learn quickly from this experience to be just as careful of the sandbag question from the right as from the left and respond in an above the fray attitude. Otherwise, GOP alternatives who are conservative and new like Bob McDonel and Mitch Daniels, will begin to look better and better than the 2008 has beens. I don't want that for her, but she has to stop being a media circus on things that have nothing to do with the issues.
People are starting to tune these liberal bloggers out. They are like the boy who cried wolf too many times with their constant hysterical attacks. None of the major Networks or most of the major blogs are paying attention to this. MSNBC did feature it on one clip but said that Palin clarified this w/ her Facebook response (that was a fair clip surprisingly from Obama's cheerleaders).
Of course, Palin haters will run with this but Sarah is now a best selling author and is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential politicians in the world plus she has the respect of notables like Barbara Walters and Bill O'Reilly these days. These haters can't touch her anymore - she is in a different league now.
Most of the MSM is focused on Obama's Townhall this morning and are thrilled to talk about how the jobs number went down to 10% (wait 'til after the holidays though). And there's Tiger Woods, Party Crashers, etc.
BTW - with friends like Hot Air, who needs enemies? At Ace of Spades, they're calling it a stupid non story and Drudge ignored it outright. Hot Air too often has an anti-Sarah agenda.

Actually, the person who started it was a Democrat and a Hillary supporter. He went to great lengths, even going to Kenya to question Obama's paternal grandmother. I don't think that person's intention was to make GOP look stupid, he really was just a Democrat against Obama.

I have said several times on various threads. I think this was a great move by Sarah.
I don't see it as a mistake at all. Now, let the libs at Huffington Post rant and rave about Trigg and look how silly they look. The MSM is afraid of this issue because they know they failed to hold OBAMA's feet to the fire regarding his birth certificate.
If the MSM want this to be an issue...I am sure Sarah will want them to make OB's
birth questions an issue also. Even in the interview she stated that men and women should be treated alike. THE MSM AND OBAMA don't want this birther stuff either way. THIS IS A WIN FOR SARAH NOT A LOSS.
Steven, I disagree.
What part of her statement do you disagree with ?
The moral outrage you hear is not all of a sudden - moral. it's sinister.
My conspiracy theory on Hot Air is that they are drawing the enemy out.
Until McDonnell proves his courage and runs a conservative administration in VA, he does not have the perceived bona-fides to live conservatism.
Give him a year to see how he does as gov. of VA and we can check back on him.
Right now though, Gov. Palin is the de facto political leader of the conservative movement combined with Jim DeMint in the Senate and Michelle Bachmann in the House.

Because of this comment, I'm going to the national Tea Party Convention in TN. The problem is that the Tea Party Movement needs to become more mainstream and needs to FOCUS on candidates and policy.
Enough bitching and moaning. It's time to man up and stop Obamacare and Cap and Trade and then begin the process of choosing/endorsing candidates that have the same or largely overlapping vision on most issues.
I hope these nuts run with this! It's very clear what she meant (no matter what anyone says). She can (and will) come at them with both barells--1\ There's a galactic double standard when it comes to the "truth" the media wants to get to the bottom of and 2\ Although she doesn't doubt for a minute that he's a U.S. citizen, why doesn't he grow up, stop playing games and produce the damned thing?! He seems to enjoy fostering wacko conspiracy theories for some reason. His call.
That puts both the media and The Once on the spot or at least makes them look ridiculous (more ridiculous). She did it already with her facebook post. At this point, anyone who trys to blow this up will become a Birther, Birther conspiracy nut.
She's just not going to make a blunder. They're hoping and expecting her to but she won't. She's too stable and too smart. She's got a huge advantage when dealing with her enemies--she know them like a book and they'll never "get" her in a million years. She's an enigma to them and they're as predictable as Pelosi's frozen death smile to her.
The only ones who can lose here are them. Even if it blows up (and it won't except on the usual maniac Leftie sites for a while-maybe), she wins-big.
As to Allah P, maybe she should send the guy a picture of herself. He can hang it on his wall along with the other 6000 pictures of her he's probably got hanging there. It's not easy to be a shut in.
Done. Signed up with room for two nights.
If anybody is going and wants to be the C4P photographer, ask C4P to send you my e-mail contact so we can link up and plan the event to cover it like C4P reporters with cool shirts and cards.
Agreed. However, O-man needs to cough up transcripts, SAT scores, and his work from the Harvard Law Review. His constant evasion on the simplest of things is disturbing. At least Sarah is above the table and walks the talk of transparency while O-man pays ony lip service to it.
The way you handle it is to divert the issue to 'transparency' where O-man is failing miserably.
Good point. This all started with Dems, mainly Hillary supporters, not the GOP.
Sarah is powerful because she is simple. People understand her.
As they understand her when she says "Americans have a right to ask questions"
She stands on principle, and she doesn't back down.
In addition to reminding americans that the president ran on "transparency", she can effectively add that taxpayers demand MORE transparency from govt, and that this is a reasonable thing.
she leads from a position of strength, of simplicty, truth, and honor.
- and people are noticing that they like that.
simple, straightforward, consistent.
That's her, we like it.
I couldn't read the 1000+ comments about this issue at HA but reading a few left me confused as to why people are having trouble with what she said.
What I read was her saying People are entitled to ask whatever they want of a candidate. We all know the status of Trig's birth was considered open fodder for her detractors. Why should anyone excpect her to call those who do have questions regarding Obama's birth status idiots? When did she get appointed the defender of Obama and his qualifications? IMO she responded to the Trig Truthers so why isn't it Obama's responsibility to respond to the Birthers?
She clearly said - It's not for her. Do we need her to decide what it is for others? I don't need or want even Gov Palin to decide what questions are appropriate for other citizens to ask regarding candidates. Ever consider that if Obama had initially responded to the concerns regarding his birth staus - which has much more serious Constitutional consequences that the parental status of a candidate's child - this issue would not have gotten the legs it did? Ever consider that Birthers were consigned to the fringe BECAUSE no one in the mainstream wanted to actually require Obama to prove what should be a reasonable thing? The mainstream was so in love with the idea of a minority candidate no one wanted to rain on that parade. No one demanded the same birth certificate I had to show when I got my NJ drivers' license or my federal ID.

I just don't need Palin to be talking about anything like this. Enough. She might have not said anything wrong, but why talk about this or give it credence? Check out www.memeorandum.com and see what I mean. This thing is percolating up the media chain and I just don't like these things always dogging Palin. If this continues to happen, conservatives will say that Palin is good to draw a crowd and raise money, but we don't want the circus in the White House. They'll look to a McDonnel or Daniels in the end. That's what I fear...
I see McDonnel as the 2012 dark horse...
Yeah, but she's in a position, more than anyone who ever lived, to call THE MEDIA out on their hypocrisy--which she did. They were demanding restaurant receipts, dry cleaning receipts, etc. from her. Stay away from the birther question but hammer the media until they run for the hills. Actually she's got them backed into a corner.
I truly hope they keep coming after her on this! Except for the wacko lefties (and Allah Pundit), they won't though. It's a losing battle for them.
Trig Truthers, Right Back Atcha!
no doubt she will be asked about her statement again- but that is a good thing she will just get stronger in her answer. also better for her to see the danger in this area now and not in 2010 or when she starts her run for the presidency- God willing.
Some things should be private. If a job requires transcripts, medical records, confessions, etc., then it should be public. The job of president doesn't require any of these. How transparent are all these aspects of Sarah's life?
It's about time a consitutional lawyer gave us the truth about this. And your credentials are?
Sarah - do not give it if you can not take it! Even the Republican women of Alaska are done with you! Lisa Murkowski and Oympia Snowe are the real Republican women our country should be standing behind.
Could not disagree more with the guy above, Steven, who claims to be all for Palin but who also is crying about a "self-inflicted wound" and who also tells us, s/ no doubt only with Palin's best interests in mind /s, that he doesn't "need" (ie, want) to hear anything from Palin about Obama's birth cert.
Steven, you know nothing, nothing about Palin, that is clear. She doesn't care what you "need"/want to hear. Neither do I, frankly. Face it, you're not a Palin guy. Your posts read like "how to's" for mobys.
On the other hand, there is no shortage of GOP politicians who could not agree more with your play it safe advice. Could I refer you, perhaps, to Mitt Romney, whose most recent public utterances on the top 10 things Obama could do to stabililze the economy said NOTHING, nothing whatever about Obamacare (aka Romneycare)? Now that is playing it the Steven way. And good luck with that approach, Steven and Mitt. Americans are way beyond the hunkered down, finger in the wind pols.
The only "self-inflicted wounds" I see are the postings by a few Palin supporters who live in fear of criticism by the left and by their butt boys in the media. Come on people, if declaring that Americans have a right to ask Qs about their President is "too controversial," its over. This is just one more lefty attack--initiated largely by lefties within the GOP--which Palin and you will get through just fine.
Good job, Josh! I know the lamestream media reads this website.
Next time she should just say that there are crazy conspiracies out there and everyone has a right to question, but emphasize that she does believe Obama is a US citizen.
The only problem with the new greater exposure of C4P is we seem to be aquiring a whole new crop of 'concern trolls' and the old ones are posting more often then they were for awhile.....
I highly recommend to new persons that they lurk and read for a longer period of time to get the feel of the place before they inadvertantly insert their foot in their mouth.....
Anyone that questions Lady Sarah's honesty, motives and strategy has NO PLACE HERE!
Ditto for anyone that thinks they know better than her how to handle her own life!
