Putin Continues to Take Advantage of Obama's Weak Leadership
Last September, President Obama betrayed Poland and The Czech republic under the bus by reneging on a promised missile defense system in an effort to gain favor with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Poland and The Czech Republic have been two of our staunchest allies in the war on terror and Obama’s decision was, to me, not qualitatively different from what Neville Chamberlain did at Munich in 1938 when he appeased Hitler, thus handing Czechoslovakia to Hitler on a silver platter. In a particularly appalling sense of timing, Obama’s decision came on the 70th anniversary of Stalin’s invasion of Poland in 1939. Joe Biden, in yet another demonstration of his lack of foreign policy understanding, made the ridiculous claim that Iran was not a threat, and therefore missile defense wasn't necessary in Eastern Europe.
Even if true, which it isn’t, Biden completely missed the point. The fledgling democracies in Eastern Europe have more to fear from a renewal of Russian antagonism than Iran. The missile defense, in addition to providing a real American military presence, also would have provided a psychological reminder to eastern and central Europe that America was not going to allow Russian dreams of reconstituting the Soviet Empire to encroach on the hard won freedom that eastern and central Europeans struggled for so long to achieve. In a post at the time of Obama's misguided decision, I wrote about the dangers inherent in such a policy:
Obama’s flagrant appeasement of Putin, in yet another sign of his dangerously naïve world view, illustrates to our allies that American cannot be counted on to stand up to Russian belligerence. When push comes to shove, Obama will do whatever Putin wants in order to avoid uncomfortable decisions: decisions that the leader of the free world is expected to make. It is difficult to imagine how or why these countries will ever trust America's word as long as Obama is president.
As the Obama presidency continues to unfold, Americans who were around in the 1970s are feeling a sense of déjà vu as we increasingly appear to be following policies, both foreign and domestic, that characterized Jimmy Carter's disastrous presidency.
[...]
During the 2008 campaign, much was made by the media of Governor Palin’s supposed lack of foreign policy experience, despite the fact that she had at least as much, if not more, than Obama. Governor Palin would never travel the globe apologizing for America. She would never appease Putin and throw staunch allies like Poland and the Czech Republic under the bus. She would not allow Russian territorial claims in the oil-rich Arctic to go unanswered, as Obama is doing.
It turns out that my above concerns, expressed last fall, were entirely justified. Yesterday Kim Zigfeld, in an article at Pajamas Media, discusses some of what has ensued as a result of Obama's naiveté:
Those who feared that U.S. President Barack Obama had “pulled a Chamberlain” when he visited Moscow over the summer and offered unilateral concessions on the missile defense shield his predecessor had promised to Eastern Europe have seen their concerns disturbingly realized in recent days.
Obama’s naked weakness did indeed “reset” American relations with Russia. The Russians became much more aggressive and dangerous.
Almost immediately after the event, Russia virtually invaded Poland in a pretend attack that included the use of nuclear missiles — an eerie echo of the post-Chamberlain blitzkrieg disaster. And those who thought that the Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin, would stop with virtual missiles were very much mistaken.
On Tuesday, Putin stated:In order to maintain balance, without developing the antimissile system just like the U.S. is doing, we have to develop an offensive combat power system. Since we are not developing our own missile defense, there is a threat that our partners would feel totally secure having created an umbrella against our offensive systems. Then our partners might do whatever they want; the aggressiveness in real politics and economics would increase because of the broken balance.
In other words, even though Obama had just shut down the antimissile system and was pushing for a major new nuclear arms reduction treaty to follow it, Putin declared that Russia would press forward to develop massive new nuclear missile arsenals.
It is clear from Zigfeld's analysis that Putin has no intention of reciprocating Obama's unilateral disarmament in Europe. Indeed, as many predicted, he sees it as a sign of weakness and is more than willing to fill the void. Zigfeld continues:
Russian defense policy expert Alexander Golts concluded: “Our prime minister is moving those talks to total deadlock. Putin is also violating an agreement made by both sides not to reveal details of the negotiations.” The Heritage Foundation is more blunt: “Obama is playing right into Putin’s hands.” Commentator Mark Whittington calls it “the price of appeasement.” He writes:Putin’s reaction may have come as a surprise to the Obama administration, but not to anyone who has studied the history of appeasement of dictators. Unilateral concessions have a tendency to have the opposite of the intended effect, emboldening men like Putin by showing weakness, rather than inspiring concessions in turn.
President Ronald Reagan faced the same problem during a summit meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland, when then Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev demanded that the United States abandon plans for strategic missile defense in return for an arms control agreement. Reagan walked out of the talks in a move criticized at the time. But the move made Gorbachev realize that Reagan, who was an experienced negotiator dating from his days as a union leader, was not a man to be pushed around. Eventually the Soviet Union and the United States signed the original START treaty which mandated reductions in nuclear arms.
Russia can build offensive weapons, but the technology necessary to build an umbrella shield is far beyond Russia’s grasp. Having, at no cost, wiped out Eastern Europe’s shield, Putin is now moving to eradicate all U.S. defensive capability, giving Russia the ability to threaten offensive action at any time for political leverage.
[...]
Putin believes he can manipulate Obama into abandoning the possibility to expand shield technology and thus save Russia from the disastrous “Star Wars” arms race instigated by Reagan that ultimately brought down the USSR without a shot being fired.
Zigfeld correctly identifies Putin's most important policy goal is to manipulate Obama into giving up on America's missile defense program, an area in which Russia can't possibly compete. If Obama allows this to happen, largely due to his unjustified narcissism, Putin will have effectively returned the world to the pre-Reagan cold war era in which Russia is free to do what they want in central and eastern Europe. In other words, Obama's policies will essentially forfeit the hard fought victory Reagan achieved in the cold war.
Putin's plans are not limited to the overtly military. As Governor Palin has repeatedly warned, he wants to use Russia's vast energy reserves as a weapon with which to exert control over Europe. Zigfeld continues:
Russia is building a natural gas pipeline called Nord Stream whose purpose, according to Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, a former foreign minister of Denmark, is “to enable Russia to interrupt gas supplies to EU member countries like Poland, the Baltic states and Ukraine, while keeping its German and other West European customers snug and warm.” Once this maneuver has been completed, Russia will have a choke hold on the entire former Soviet space, from Georgia to Lithuania, and will be able to combine military and energy threats to force this territory back under the Russian jackboot.
What will stop Putin from pursuing his chosen course? Certainly not Obama, as Zigfeld argues:
Putin has no reason to believe Obama will ever take a stand on any issue. He has no reason to believe he has anything but a free hand to lay waste in former Soviet space while imposing a final crackdown on civil society within Russia itself (Putin is moving aggressively to cut his nation off from Internet access and will likely soon return to formal power as some type of “president for life”). And once Putin has consolidated his malignant regime in a neo-Soviet state, assuming oil prices remain high he will be able to fund a new cold war against the democracies of the West.
Read the rest of the Zigfeld piece here. It is difficult to argue with Zigfeld's logic. Obama has shown no ability or inclination to stand up to Putin (or anyone else) and this is not lost on the rest of the world. They are watching with eyes wide open. In the real world, a leader is judged not on his or her ability to use a teleprompter, but on actions. Obama is proving to have the backbone of Neville Chamberlain and is nothing more than a community organizer who, through some historical fluke, is in way over his head. This does not bode well for the daunting challenges America is facing and will continue to face. Indeed, such weak and naive leadership will only exacerbate the myriad problems that need to by addressed.
We've seen what happens when America leads from a position of weakness before. See Jimmy Carter. Obama is determined, through some misplaced sense of guilt perhaps, to lead America down the path to mediocrity. We see it in his cap and tax plans, ObamaCare, foreign policy, and his entire agenda. Over the next few years, we will all be reminded of the utter futility of appeasement. By the time Obama stands for re-election, America will be ready to embrace the common sense policies as espoused by Governor Palin and Ronald Reagan before her. The 2010 midterms will be but a preview of what will happen in 2012.

Foreign Policy precepts:
Teddy Roosevelt (although some argue he was only talking about hiking): Speak softly and carry a big stick.
Obama: Speak a lot and carry no sitck.
Palin: Boom! Taste my nightstick!
I don't mean Sarah would engage in unprovoked action or be "trigger happy", but she would provide funding for missle defense systems and would be well aware of the significance of dates of pronouncements (heck, she remember Constitution Day and Margaret Thatcher's birthday on Facebook). She would employ the principles that Reagan employed: peace through strength and trust, but verify. When asked about foreign policies in interviews she always emphasizes protecting and working with our allies. As much as people criticized the Gibson interview she handled the question regarding Russia and Georgia very well. I would even suggest reading the full transcript of the Gibson interview because she did very well in the parts of the interview that were edited (surprise, surprise).
This is one of the many reasons we need to become energy independent or as close to it as possible. It will help us in so many ways. Palin 2012.
Oblamo is a puppet and a pawn....it will give in to anyone on the international scene who pretends to like him........what a putz.
I know Putin is a black belt at Judo, but I’m pretty sure Sarah can take him. She would at least fight him, and be respected for it. At the beginning of a match, opponents bow; Obama would get that part right, but would get too wee weed up in a real fight. I would hope he’d remember his depends so he wouldn’t be too embarrassed. Then, just America would be.
Obama is out of his league with Putin, you see Obama is not used to fighting, but just voting present! Putin will take the USA out, he knows that the USA is weak and vunerable, and I believe Sarah will at least show up to defend the USA, Obama is off on vacation again...gee!
Sarah 2012!
At the risk of sounding like Hannity (because I've written this about 5 times before)--Go to Poland Sarah! They'd love you! Many already do! I saw pictures of you all over the place when I was there. One Polish girl asked me if I knew you (lol). If I said yes she would have passed out.
Shove it in O's face! Wherever he betrays an ally (and the Poles are as good and loyal an ally as we've got), show up! For their sake and the sake of our country's honor. THEY need to know America isn't O, and that a new day's coming too! No one's been knifed in the back as much as the Poles.
FYI--When Reagan had a foreign affairs, closed door meeting, he'd usually kick it off with "What's happening in Poland?"
Sarah's people!--if you're reading this site, tell her! (I mean "please" of course. Pushy NYer).
She'd have intant cred worldwide as the anti-O. She's pretty much established that here.
What's left of Europe is located right there. The Czech Pres is the voice crying in the wilderness over there about what a Soviet style scam Global Warming is too. They'd be instant buds.
FTA, what does this mean:
"<span>Almost immediately after the event, Russia virtually invaded Poland in a pretend attack that included the use of nuclear missiles — an eerie echo of the post-Chamberlain blitzkrieg disaster."</span>
- What event ? is it the concession of the missile defense shield ?
- What pretend attack ?
Those that continue to Question Sarah's abilities as President to look any Foreign Leader, friend or foe alike, in the eye and say... Try Me!... are fools of a whole other kind, especially MEN!
Look at It this way... Everyone knows Sarah's love of America and Family! All 350 million people here, critics included, belong to both her loves... we are all Americans and we are all her Family---we are MOMA GRIZZLIES-Bear Cubs, and America is her territory to defend till death!
Im will be sleeping well with that knowledge come 2012!... not so much so now!
I like that idea but it could be used against her in the media that she's interferring with U.S.A.'s (Barry and Hillary's) foriegn policy and trying to build up credibility to make her '12 run on the empty suit. On the other hand it could boomerang on the same media that she is becoming more knowledgable on foreign affairs and building relationships with other leaders, especially where she is well recieved like Poland. I suppose it's a calculation that Sarah would have to make though she may be quite busying this year with lectures and campaining for conservatives. It's definitely worth thinking over in my opinion.
Sounds like a wargame to me, to test the enemy's reaction to their provocation. This is reminicent of the coldwar. Putin was the last chairman of the KGB after all and is a snake.
Socialism is mandated mediocrity, except for the "Elect" of course. What he's doing IS intentional.
I disagree about the Muslim part. He's no Muslim, he's an Atheist, but it's amazing how much the agendas of Islam and the secular left overlap. Obama's the Manchurian Candidate. The worldwide Left owns him.
As to impeachment, it ain't gonna happen William imo, unless something massively illegal and <span>absolutely provable</span> happens. We've got to retake the congress and tie his stick figure arms behind his back for the rest of his term to limit the damage. At the very least, we have to have the numbers in both houses, and candidates with the guts to Filibuster like hell and sink everything he puts forward. Sarah's going to be hugely important in getting that done.
Great write up Doug. Thanks for posting it. Leaders need to realize that there is not a one size fits all approach to foreign policy. Some countries have proven themselves to be good and trustworthy allies. But, with others you need to be more forceful. I look at it from my point of view in working with clients. I try to treat everybody with unconditional positive regard. But, some of my clients require really really firm boundaries, e.g. people with personality disorders. In fact you might almost think I was a different counselor. I'm not mean or anything, just really firm for my client's sake, and my own quite frankly. Putin and others need to be treated differently out of respect and out of self-interest. Our President does this country a disservice by not being more firm and trustworthy.
Good article on Pajamas Media regarding Oblamos presidency..........
http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/whats-more-important-than-being-electable-being-able-to-govern/
Personally....I think Sarah is both....electable and able to govern.
I was listening to Walter Williams on Rush on Friday.
One caller asked "What can we do ?"
WW's answer was: "Change the people" (my take: educate the people)
He used this example:
WW wrote (long ago) about farm subsidies, and how they are harmful.
During lunch with Jesse Helms. JH agreed, but said "What can I do ? If I vote against them, I'm out of office".
WW used this not to point out the JH was weak in taking this stance, but that, in fact, JH WAS representing the people !
So, what should we do ?
- we need to talk to our friends, and engage our enemies !
WW used a great term: "useful idiots", those who "support" the POTUS but have no clue about what's really going on.
I was also listening to Michael Medved recently, and he had on a guest who had lots of good ideas, all pro-American (wish I had better references).
But the European nation to watch in the next decade or so ?
- Poland
I agree. He's not his own man Kjanlady. That's a shoe that has a chance of dropping if any real, honest to God investigative reporter has the guts to dig.
The guy's still a mystery on almost every level...where are his childhood friends? Where are the students he "taught" when he was a "professor" singing his praises? Those are just two simple questions, but they show how bizarre this guy's biography is. He just "appeared" and "paled around" (as Sarah puts it) with the worst of the worst. The guy's a blank.
She can be "invited" to speak at an event. They'd make one up for her if they had to, believe me. She'd know how to get her points across without blatantly naming O. Just showing interest speaks volumes. She could visit with Polish moms who have sons serving with us for example. She could bring up JP2 and Pro-Life subjects (after which they'd carry her through the streets on their shoulders). Energy's an issue. There are endless possibilities.
I asked my Reagan friend what got him thinking SP would likely be the 2012 nominee and also the POTUS (paraphrasing):
- her ability to turn people's heads and also to become active (e.g. electable)
In addition, he has personally witnessed many successes (and flame-outs) in the past 30 years, and he (like us) watch and observe.
The more we learn about Sarah, if that is possible, the more we love her
- and that is what happens to anyone with any sense of decency.
Agreed!!
Aside from being extremely gifted, what makes her electable (like Reagan) is that she's authentic. She has that rare quality of being exactly what she appears to be. There's no mask. That's why she gives rapid fire answers for example. That baffles (and scares) the hell out of the Beltway.
I believe the Russians ran a huge, combined military exercise right on the border.
lol Your probably right that they would make up an event to get her there to visit and it might give Putin some worries of his own since Sarah would stand up to the shirtless ex-spy when she takes office and make Barry do something novel in his case....show some spine. Not to mention that it would perhaps bolster our other friends and allies that Barry's offened that we "the people" are still with them no matter what the Marxist sqatting in the WH does....I'm sold. But time may still be a factor right now for her, I'm sure her schedule is quite full.
Right, Barry "thinks" about his answers and everyone (useful idiots) thinks he's "intellectual" (yeah, like Peter Sellers in "Being There")
Sarah doesn't have to "think" what to say - her head is filled with the truth.
Thanks, Doug,
Communism is not dead nor is the KGB. The question will be is the center of world power in Moscow or Beijing? Radical Islam is of course a spoiler with their own plans for world dominion and Sharia law. If the USA disarmament continues on its current trajectory, we may well become a second tier player. Europe is pretty much a reciprocal of stronger forces and with current birthrates, may soon vote in Sharia law!
And yet, has a single new nuclear power plant been planned in the US since the election?
And that means no typical GOP candidates need apply. We need new people from the outside, perhaps leaders of the Tea Party movement. Anybody but the get along/go along, reach across the aisle, politics as usual Republicans. We need people willing to fight hard and dirty and beat the DemocRATS at their own dirty game.
Maybe she should schedule a second book signing tour in Poland, the Czech Republic, the Baltic states, and Israel. And visit the leaders while there, and say hello to Maggy Thatcher on the way home.
I like that idea alot, anyone know what list of countries has GR been shipped to?
This reads almost like a Lady Sarah Facebook note...... ;-)
Hmmm...I wonder what Putin knows about Obama and if it's extremely useful...well, that's just handy for the Russians ain't it?
MarkRNY, you are right on. To us, Obama's a blank, but I believe that to the rest of the world and their intelligence agencies, they know who he is. This is yet another reason why elections matter!!
Putin's just chillin', sharpening his dagger and savoring this moment, marveling at his good fortune. As I wrote on another post, this is gonna be a tough year because Obama is fading and he will lose his power to push his agenda in 2011. Putin and the rest of the world knows it so they have to make their moves soon. It's going to be a battle like none other. Once Sarah gets elected, he knows it'll be Reagan all over again and he does not want to be Gorby. Sarah in Poland is a great idea...hope she makes it happen.
Agreed.
They don't call her The Barracuda for nothing.
She can take a punch and land several, that's for sure!
