The Difference Between Using a Teleprompter and Notes

Some of our friends on the left do not understand the distinction between using notes and using a teleprompter when giving a speech. Stephen Spruiell from the National Review explains the distinction perfectly (emphasis added):

I get that it's a sort of "turnabout is fair play" from the set that must be very annoyed by now at all the prompter jokes. But it misses the point of why the prompter jokes have caught on. A prompter feeds your remarks to you word for word. The idea that you would need such a device to talk to a room full of sixth graders or a meeting of your own staff is funny.

On another level, the prompter jokes took off because they reinforce the substantive argument that Obama is in over his head, because they indicate that he can't perform the the presidency's basic public-speaking duties without a major safety net. I'm not sure what substantive argument Palin's hand-notes are supposed to underline, and I suspect it's not an argument so much as an attitude. The attitude would be that writing on your hand is dumb and low-class. On the left, where this opinion of Palin already prevails, anything which reinforces it will be picked up and cheerfully passed around. And, to the extent that anyone not on the left notices this giddy snobbery, it will play to Palin's strengths.

For example, one might say: "Unlike the guy who needs a three thousand dollar teleprompter to get out of bed in the morning, Palin speaks from concise notes like everybody else. And, like other busy moms, she sometimes writes notes on her hand." The comeback is so obvious that, again, I really can't figure out why Palin's detractors are bringing this up at all.

When you can't really take down the Message, you try any which way you can to take down the Messenger. It's that simple.

KeeleyH,  February 7, 2010 6:11 PM

Has it even been determined yet whether there was something written on her palm or someone photoshooped it?

Steven,  February 7, 2010 6:12 PM

These people expose their idiocy everytime. Its sad. She gave a great speech and had a Q and A and basically wrote some mental notes on her hand to guide her. I will say that Sarah referring to her hand notes during the Q and A was strange, but that's the evil of notes, is that they give you a sense of assurance, but sometimes they become a crutch that you're bound to refer to even if you already know what you wrote down. But the hullabaloo about this is crazy!

I think the main thing is that it is such a "maverick" thing to do.  Some people routinely write notes on their hands.  She may have done this before the blackberry technology.  I don't think we've seen this done by political speakers.

BTW:  she seems to be back on stride today.  Great presentation for Perry.

panchita,  February 7, 2010 6:16 PM

It won't matter. its part of her mythology now.  She crossed out budget cuts and went with TAX CUTS.

Hey Piasano,  February 7, 2010 6:21 PM

The morons on the left want to make something out of her writing four words on her hand. What they  forget to notice that if she was able to give a 1 hour speech with only four words to channel her thoughts she has got one hell of a mind.  How quickly they forget Obama stuttering and stammering when he lost his place on the telepromptor. This example makes them look even dumber than Obama.

Bestbud,  February 7, 2010 6:22 PM

Thanks Tommy

The difference between using a teleprompter?

Im thinking that's pretty simple.

Like knowing s__t! from Shinola!

DDC,  February 7, 2010 6:23 PM

I think her next speech, she should have eggs, diapers, and veggies written on her hand.

Keeley: whether it was photostopped or not Sarah's left hand has now entered mythology.

Energy, Tax Cuts (interestingly she crossed out budget cuts) and Lifting American spirits.

I daresay if obama was able to put his policies down on his left hand, he would have had more success. unfortunately he used the hand to wipe himself, and before he could decipher the words, Scott Brown had won the election.

PatrickinOH,  February 7, 2010 6:26 PM

OT: I'm watching the Palin/Perry rally now, rightscoop.com has the whole thing up now.  She is doing really great so far, and I notice the updo is back.

And from the pictures I've seen it didn't look like there was anything written on her hand, but even if she did I could really care less, in fact it really just makes me like her more, because who hasn't done that?

There is no problem to have key notes written in your hand but these basic words shouldn't be difficult to remember if you believe in what you are saying

The comeback is so obvious that, again, I really can't figure out why Palin's detractors are bringing this up at all.

Because they are trying to shift the attention away from the substance of Governor Palin's speech and refocus people's attention on the narrative of her that they are pushing at the moment that she is little more than a scandle prone celebrity and not a serious political leader.

Anonymous,  February 7, 2010 6:34 PM

Wasn't she the queen of the teleprompter , remember the great speech last year at the convention .
So from now on she is not going to use a teleprompter ? Uhmmmm ....

All this means is that there are so many things Sarah Palin has to fix, and in order not to get caught up in listing all of them, she had to shorten the list down to just three or four...
Personally, I would have had to use both hands.

Just saw the Tebow commercial.  If I was a liberal I would go hide myself.  THey made a big deal of not airing that commercial?  Anybody that thought that commercial was some bad awful things either has an IQ of 5 and listens to what any cult leader says or doesn't have a life.  I think Liberal groups should apologize en masse for making a big deal of it.  Actually the commercial ended up being funny.

Steven,  February 7, 2010 6:48 PM

If she would have had the correct pronunciation of the word "Chevrolet", on her hand, now that would have been embarrassing.
But she isn't a "corpseman", like you know who's Presidency, so, no worries.

I think it would be awesome if she did that and people responded by holding up their hands with the words "I AM AMERICA" or run with what she supposedly wrote on her hand "Energy, Tax Cuts, Uplifting American Spirits"

It'll be like the purple fingers. We need to get Washington to listen to its bosses. Us.

All these haters are doing is keep the teleprompter jokes on Obama front and center. Bring it on! They are forgetting that it was Jon Stewart who started all those teleprompter jokes recently. And if they go back in history, it was Hillary Clinton who first brought up his reliance on the teleprompter. They want to play? Ok, let's play! Let's bring up ALL the teleprompter jokes made on Obama by EVERYONE who ever had anything to say about it, including Demorcrats who have mocked him about it. BRING IT ON!

That Letterman, Winfrey, Leno commercial, was hilarious!

Anonymous,  February 7, 2010 7:23 PM

This reminds me of "visor-gate". It also makes me respect Sarah even more, because she doesn't think like any politician we have ever seen. When she inks out McCain on her visor or reminds herself of a couple of things she wants to say, she is not thinking "if I do this how will I look". Most politicians make decisions based on polls and how it will make them look. Sarah is unlike anyone in Washington.

hrh,  February 7, 2010 7:25 PM

Did you see the Super Bowl commcerical just a few minutes ago, with those 3 in it? It was a play off the commercial that Letterman and Winfrey did for the Colts/Bears Super Bowl. I thought the first one was cute, and I just got a kick out of this one too.:)

Nancy,  February 7, 2010 7:37 PM

I wonder who would have to write Obama's crib notes on his hand.
Because he sure doesn't have a clue about any of the things written on TOTUS's screen.

hrh,  February 7, 2010 7:46 PM

Didn't see the original one, so that must be why I didn't get the follow-up ...

sandrainoregon,  February 7, 2010 7:51 PM

Jean's picture was not very clear.  I've seen several others that seemed clear with notes.  Today she had "Hi, Mom," on her left hand.  I think they were there.  It just surprised everyone.  Nothing wrong with using notes.  I prefer notes cards.

Governor Palin written on her hand: If you are looking this closely at my hands, you are a jack@$$.

Ennealogic,  February 7, 2010 7:56 PM

You guys ... Sarah looked down at her notes throughout her "speech" in front of the Tea Party people.  Pray tell, what is the difference between that and a teleprompter?  You prepare a speech, you read it with assistance.  What is the difference?

When it comes time to supposedly impromptu questions, I do not recall anyone outside of high school debate club, who even thinks about cribbing notes in one's palm.

I mean seriously!  If you don't know what you are about, or what you mean, or what you can talk about with authority without referring to key words inked in your palm...!?!?!?!

But hey, as usual, those who think Sarah's fecal matter smells like rose petals will have a hard time seeing how this looks to everyone else who is not under the sway of her svelte black-stockinged legs and her bouffant wig and her face-lifted face.

She's fooling you big time.  And you are falling for it.  Donating your limited dollars while she has millions in her bank account but pretends to be just like you, sorting out her annual budget at the kitchen table.  Listen.. it's okay that you like her and want to support her causes du jour.... but she's scamming you.  From me to you, she's taking you for a ride.  You're being duped.  And she doesn't care about anything except the dollars you send to her pac or her house or her defense fund.  Ah well, witness my post being deleted.

PatrickinOH,  February 7, 2010 7:58 PM

It's because she's irrelevant, she can't keep her own daughter's attention!  EPIC FAIL!

Nancy,  February 7, 2010 7:58 PM

hrh,
Back a few years ago, Letterman and Winfrey supposedly had a feud going. Letterman would do bits about trying to get her to come on his show, begging her to come on.
He is from Indiana, and she is from Chicago, so for the Colts/Bears Super Bowl, they did a commcercial together. Where they are watching the Super Bowl in their Colts/Bears jerseys, being kinda lovey dovey with each other. It was funny, I thought, anyway.:)
I thought this one was cute too.

LAW,  February 7, 2010 8:07 PM

I zoomed in on the c-span Q & A video on my lap top and went frame by frame. There IS NOT any writing on her hand. Sometimes there is shadowing, but that is all. Last night this whole trolling episode started, for me, over at Hillbuzz's Palin Tea Party Speech post by someone called "sundancefan". He wouldn't let it go all night. He hijacked the thread.

Is "guest" here sundancefan?

Well, the trolls I think win this round because there are numerous posts in the blogosphere defending Sarah "so what if she did?" instead of just plain calling them liars and telling them to "F"-off with a capital F for photo-shopping.

Gelston, you may be sorry you wanted me to post more. *g* From a fellow Washingtonian from the "convergant zone".

Btw, did you pronounce it "Warsh-ing-tun" as I did growing up or were you a "Wah-shing-tun" speaker.

Take care,
Laurie

bassman,  February 7, 2010 8:16 PM

My take on this is a bit different. Sarah does not think like any politician we have ever seen. How often do we see a politician answer a question by thinking how can it help him/her politically. You can just see the gears in his/her head turning as they think, "what is the most politically correct answer?" Sarah wasn't thinking about that when she inked out McCain on her visor in Hawaii. Nor was she thinking that Liberals will attack her if she puts a couple of words on her hand to remind herself of what she wants to say. She is not a politician, and that is why I support her.

Nancy,  February 7, 2010 8:17 PM

To all the liars that photoshopped writing onto her hand, "you lie!"
Typical for the looney Left.

Blessedly for us, Governor Palin is a sarcastic genius, and uses the lies, for hilarious bits. She is not Romney, McCain, Pawlenty or any of the other wimps, that the elites love. I guess that is why the Left DESPISES her, and we would die for her.
LOL!!!!

Ennealogic,  February 7, 2010 8:33 PM

Do you really think the ink in her palm was photoshopped?  Really?  Even after you can clearly see her looking down into her palm during the Q-A?

Wow, and woe is you if that is the case.

panchita,  February 7, 2010 8:45 PM

panchita,  February 7, 2010 8:48 PM

obama does bows real good though. really gets servile in front of opposing heads of state who don't have our best interests at heart.

lmg,  February 7, 2010 8:50 PM

Piper forgot to write "Stay Awake!" on her hand.

lmg,  February 7, 2010 9:05 PM

I noticed that she shook hands left-handed with Andrew Breitbart when she entered the stage, so maybe it transferred from his hand. ;-)

Sarah will probably write a FB post on "Handgate" soon and clear it all up.

She spoke from notes on 8.5"x11" paper. She did the same at the Perry rally. You can see her carry them on. She fumbled only once in 45 minutes when she said "Alaska" instead of "America". (But then she did promise to continue advancing the interests of her home state. ;-) But mainly, and obviously, she spoke from the heart. As for the zombies that cannot or will not see that - go seek your lost souls.

LT,  February 7, 2010 9:36 PM

Despite any "evidence" to the contrary, I can't imagine her using hand notes like this. I mean really. She never hides anything; if she needed notes she would have brought out an index card, for heaven's sake! What has me wondering though, is that AP picture (I think from a Yahoo slideshow) that showed
the writing very clearly (so clearly that I would have noticed it myself as it happened). Was AP fooled, were they "in on it", or did Yahoo or whomever else that published it not verify the sources?

Allie,  February 7, 2010 11:27 PM

I liked her speech better today also.  She was more fired up.  I have come to the conclusion that she is actually more at ease when she has a bigger audience.

The notes in the hand really do not bother me at all so I do not understand the big deal about it.  I guess that they had to pick on something and that was the only thing that they could find.  Oh, well.  I wonder what they will nitpick about the Houston speech.  Maybe she had a smudge on her glasses or she had one hair out of place.  There is always something.

I have only met one person in my life that can stand in front of an audience with no warning that he would be asked to speak on a subject, no preparation, no notes, no teleprompter and give a 30 minute speech to a group of people about the subject.

Allie,  February 7, 2010 11:35 PM

It had to have been after her speech and before the questions.  Maybe the interviewer gave her a quick rundown of the questions and she jotted real quick how she wanted to answer that particular question and that is why she crossed one off and changed it.  That is what makes more sense.  If she would have had the questions before the speech not only would the words have shown up on her hand but there would not have been one crossed out like she changed her mind at the last moment.  Remember that she uses her hands a lot when she speaks it would have been noticeable then and she did not have it during the speech.  We have a 10 foot projection TV and I am sure I would have seen at least some black ink on her hand during the speech.

Arctos,  February 8, 2010 12:49 AM

I'm sure folks on C4P know that Mrs. Palin used a teleprompter when she gave her resignation speech on July, 3, right? You can see it at about 1:17 here: http://community.adn.com/adn/node/142175

If you don't believe that is a teleprompter, you can look up a picture on Wikipedia. They fit over the camera lens so the speaker can direct her comments to the audience.

Does it matter that she wrote her speech out first and read it off a teleprompter? Of course not. If it makes her feel more comfortable at other times to read from notes or to write notes on her hand, then fine. The goal is better communication.

So who cares if Obama uses one? The reason people are making a big deal of her hand is that she had just taken a jab--and not even an original one--at the president for using a device that every modern president has used, and one that she herself has used. Appearing to be a hypocrite is not the impression she needs to convey right now, particularly given her defense of Rush's words.

ZH,  February 8, 2010 4:37 AM

Huge difference bewtween reading your speech off a script and jotting some words on your hand.

A prompter feeds your remarks to you word for word. The idea that you would need such a device to talk to a room full of sixth graders or a meeting of your own staff is funny.
Sarah who can speak for almost an hour with a few notes and Obama who does staff meetings and talks to kids with a telepromter!

NYPalinPower,  February 8, 2010 4:51 AM

Since we are talking about notes here, I thought this would be a good place to put this.  After looking at the speech again Saturday night from the Tea Party, I had a few thoughts that I would like to share which might be helpful to the Governor.

I know in my heart that Sarah will become one of the best speakers ever!  She has what it takes, connects with her audience, and is a fast study.  Just a little more time, experience, trial and error and Sarah will breeze though these speaking engagements.

One thing I personally would like to offer which might be helpful in the interim, is that Sarah might be needing some extra markings in her notes, so that she knows when another "beat" will be happening.  A beat is something I learned years ago when I studied theatre and had to break down the script for the character into different changes in the tone and emotion of the dialogue.  What I noticed with Sarah is that she stumbled sometimes when she went to her notes and the beat had changed and it kind of threw her and it took her a while to absorb what she was speaking about.  I noticed this happened several times, even within the same talking point.  So I think that marking the notes in this way might be very helpful to her.

One more thing I noticed.  It would be good for Sarah sometimes to take a few seconds to pause, quietly glancing at instead of reading outloud the next paragraph of notes.  Taking a moment to breath and relax will give her that extra moment to remind herself what is coming next so she can FEEL and be better prepared when she delivers it.

So that's just my two cents.  I hope it helps.

About the speech.  It's always good to see the typically cheery Sarah handle the serious issues in a funny but calm and diplomatic way without getting too worked up.  But this past Saturday night was an exception.  It was great to see so many different parts of Sarah we never saw before.  I am so proud of her for opening up in the way she did there allowing herself to feel a bit vulnerable at times and revealing some parts of her personality that I don't think she ever showed to the public before.  It was good that she was in a supportive environment with loving folks and that the cameras were there to capture that.  So, thank you Sarah for being so brave and trusting the people by giving it your all that night.  You delivered a beautiful and effective speech which was very human, very sincere and from your heart.
