Far-Left Logic: You are a Tax Cheat if the Government Doesn't Tax You Enough
On the Huffington Post, Jeanne Devon implied that Sarah Palin is a "tax cheat." In fact, Devon was on Shannyn Moore's radio show this afternoon discussing the story, and Moore flat out called Palin a "tax cheat." Devon and Moore base this charge on the fact that Governor Palin did not pay more in property taxes than what was assessed by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough on property that Palin owns in Petersville, Alaska.
What Devon fails to tell her readers is that the Matanuska-Sustina Borough is responsible for making property assessments, not Sarah Palin. Here is what the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Division of Assessment states on its website:
The Assessment Division discovers, lists and values (appraises) all real and personal property* in Matanuska Susitna Borough. According to state law, property must be assessed at its "full and true value" as of the annual assessment date of January 1. In order to accomplish this, physical inventories of property characteristics are gathered and maintained. Mass appraisal techniques are employed to fairly and equitably appraise property at the lowest possible cost to the taxpayers of the borough.
It seems pretty clear to anyone who is not a far-left hack that it is the government's responsibility to make property assessments for determining the appropriate amount of taxation. Property owners do not voluntarily assess themselves. The Palins have paid what they were told they owe. The attachments that Devon provides to her scurrilous article as "proof" that the Palins have dodged their taxes actually establish that the Palins are current with their property taxes. In other words, there is no there there.
If Devon and Moore have an issue with how the Matanuska-Susitna Borough taxed Sarah Palin's property, then their complaint is with the borough and not with Palin. Of course, they can't generate a headline without impugning Palin with the ridiculous accusation that she is a "tax cheat."
I guess the new far-left mantra is that anyone who doesn't pay more than what the government tells them they owe is now a tax cheat.

Property assessment is the same all over the world... even here in Vancouver, Canada. They go out every year or so and assess property and send you the tax bill. No where is it the duty of a taxpayer to insist that they pay more than the assessment amount. Why? Because sometimes property values fall and the assessment goes down. It is up to the assessment office to set the property tax amount.

Just like we have pointed out that the Tax assessor has the job of assessing, they could have laws on is it lived in, is it permanently inhabital, etc etc. First Devon needs to call MATsu Borough and tell them to assess if it bothers her that much. I agree politics cannot be divorced from the culture, but that is exactly what most Republicans in running for office attempt to do. You are not reading what you are writing. If you look at what you are writing the forms are for the most part optional. Heck I know what I do with optional forms, I don't fill them out. Sounds like the MAT -SU Government was lazy. If you live there tell them to get out there and do their job. Yes, it works. I've been here since the beginning and have seen them come and go. When they don't get the reaction they crave, they eventually leave. When they succeed at escalating it into a fight, they stay and keep coming back for more.
It's somewhat mind-boggling to read some C4Per's complain and "whine" to the administrators to ban the trolls, yet these same folks CHOOSE to engage them. Go for it all you want, but don't get upset when the mods don't ban them. You chose to escalate the conversation and by choosing that path, accept the consequences.
And don't get me wrong; there are some days I love reading pages and pages of "fights" with trolls. I'm only responding to the frequent complaining to the editors of this site to ban the trolls when it's clear that some of us are making the choice to engage them and to fight with them. If that's the route you want to take, fine. Just quit whining to the editors to do something when you ("you" in general terms) clearly aren't disciplined enough to not take the bait.

As a home owner myself, when I read the article I knew it sounded a bit fishy. You never have to assess your own property taxes. The local government does that for you and then sends you the bill, which you then have to pay. If you don't pay up then you can be called a tax cheat.
Im not predicting numbers but do predict Sarah's speech will not be a Lecture!... and consist of you betcha's, and backassword and common ordinary Americans will come away with pride and hope understanding the reason the left is terrified of her...

In some counties in the USA it is possible to own multiple properties in the same county and in order to save paperwork and time...the taxes are lumped and charged to one property....thus the additional properties will always show a zero tax owed. I would have to research how the county assesses where Palin's live...but there ya go...food for thought!

If Jeanne Devon wants to accuse someone of being a tax cheat, then let her go to the appropriate authorities, report it, and let them deal with it. If the assessor finds that taxes are owed and the property owner willfully skirted the law, then and only then is this a story. Copies of tax bills and photos and an unsigned letter sent in a plain brown envelope to Devon by an anonymous someone proves absolutely nothing.
This is shoddy blog "journalism" at its finest, implying a truth based on supposition. Jeanne Devon had best make sure that she has all the facts before she begins publicly calling someone a tax cheat, or she will find that being an "AKMuckraker" can backfire in a very meaningful, and expensive, libel suit.
The one thing I know about Sarah Palin is that she has hired over the years and currently has people on retainer she calls on to ensure everything of a financial or tax nature is done up or submitted correctly to the authorities. Do you really think somebody who has been the Governor of a state and the subject of such intense scrutiny over the last 18 months would overlook an avenue that opposition research would actively pursue in searching for any issue of this sort that would paint her into a corner and prove she had cheated or was crooked? You would think that as an adult, who likely owns property she would have an understanding of how property is assessed. Three words: location, location, location. Palin herself even said it was in the middle of nowhere. Let's see a show of hands- how many people are clamoring for 20 acres of land, in the middle of nowhere, where there is no real road structure (chances are she flies in) where it's cold, it snows and it's dark for half the year? Compare that to a condo in the middle of Manhatten.

It appears that the Matsu...is 3 years behind in Assessements...they just assessed for the year 2007.
So if the building(s) were built in or around 2007...they would not have been included in the taxes.
I doubt they even will be for the year 2008.

I have a good education...almost an MBA and I am old and have paid my share of property taxes...I paid the bill that was sent to me...no more...no less... nor was I responsible for making the assessment (I have fought a few in my day)...I can teach you what it takes to build a pipeline...I can teach you how to complete an oilwell...I can tell you how to run a water flood plant...But with all this know how I need someone to answer a question for me because I don't UNDERSTAND so would someone please answer this for me...How can someone know that something is not the truth but can write an article and go on the radio an present as the truth and nothing happens to them; can someone please answer that for me?...Is it just because the ladies name is Sarah Palin?

Well, it actually is the truth, documents included. For some reason Sarah supporters choose to ignore facts that may make her look bad. Hi James23, I am just trying to learn something here, can't get past a lot of insults, cussing. Never seen anyhing like it, unbelievable. How can people fight for something they cannot defend with knowledge. There are some good exceptions here though, and enjoy their ability to debate in an educated way.
Wouldn't you expect that if you got a bill that said no improvements on the property, and you knew you had made substantial improvements, that you would notify the assessor's office? Maybe one year you would think they were behind times. But 3 years? This is like not telling the clerk you got the wrong change when it is in your favor. Just not a good reflection on one's morality.

That is not the point. There are laws for assessments. Perhaps the values are less than actual, but zero is not correct.

I am a liberal and would never dream of cheating on my taxes. I will use all my advantages, but I would never cheat. Some people are just wired that way.

Mainly I think I was saying that if you get a bill that doesn't include something you bought, and it doesn't show up on the next bill, you tell them you bought it. Only grifters would let something like that go by. It seems that a lot of people on this site wouldn't let the creditors know. They probably wouldn't let a clerk know that they overchanged.

I don't like to watch television by turning my head from one side to the other as I watch him reading from the teleprompters, same reason why I don't watch tennis matches.
