Kevin Wright: "Thoughts on Salina" (Update)

Thanks for the write up and audio of Governor Palin's speech from the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet, Kevin!

"Thoughts On Salina" by Kevin Wright

If I had any doubt about Sarah Palin's national ambitions going into tonight's event (and I admittedly had some doubts she was interested in running in 2012), the content of her speech to the Salina Chamber of Commerce did much to squelch them. Like many Kansans, I read the news of the Governor's visit to Salina in an online article several months ago and immediately bought tickets for both myself and my family, some of whom had their own doubts about not only her national ambitions, but perhaps her actual governing abilities as well. Well, apparently tonight was a night of doubt-squelching, because by the end of the evening, they were as reassured of both her conviction of character and her good ideas to progress this nation forward as I have always been. A longtime fan of Gov. Palin and reader of this blog in particular, I immediately saw it as an opportunity to contribute something to the Conservatives4Palin community.

I'd like to relay some of the things I gleaned from tonight's speech to you all. As someone who had, until tonight, never seen her speak in person, I know that simply being unable to attend an event -- whether for financial or geographical reasons -- is no reason not to be privy to the ideas shared and put forth. As such, I recorded the entire speech for everyone to hear.

For those of you unable to listen to a 40-45 minute talk (I say "talk" rather than "speech" because of her innate ability to connect with a crowd) I'd also like to do a quick summation of some of the things spoken about during her time on stage.

She was first introduced by Rep. Jerry Moran, whose introduction spans the 0:00-6:52 time mark. As she took the stage and began to speak, I was amazed to see many people visibly lean forward, as if somehow drawn in -- after the standing ovation, that is. It was clear that they were incredibly interested in what she had to say, and I have to assume that there were many people in that room who were neither conservatives nor Republicans, as it was not a campaign event or Republican event. For Sarah, the goals of the event were simple: speak to the small but effective local government of Salina and relay some of the wisdom she'd acquired over her years as a small-town mayor and councilwoman. I was surprised by how eager and receptive the attendants were to hear such a conservative message despite a definite lack of political consensus among those in attendance.

The environment was also varied in more ways than just politically. There was no one group that dominated the event's seating; In fact, there were a surprising number of young people (15-20) and 20 somethings, along with some older men and women, and yes, Chris Matthews -- plenty of different races represented. (Is your leg tingling yet?)

The part that seemed most to resonate with the people in attendance had nothing to do with the healthcare or energy or even the economy. In actuality, it was when the Governor began to frame the debate about War on Terror terminology and so-called "terrorist rights." More specifically, the fact that they had none, in spite of what our current administration would have us believe. Though she didn't come out swinging against President Obama or his administration for most of the night (in fact, I don't think she even called him by name), the one distinct reference to him was when she spoke about the Obama administration's decision to give Miranda rights to Christmas Bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, effectively allowing him to lawyer up after only a few minutes and "evok(ing) our US Constitutional right to silence." A right that, as she pointed out clearly, was not his to utilize.

She summed up her thoughts nicely when she said the following: "We need a Commander-in-Chief. Not a professor of Constitutional Law." This comment literally had people rising to their feet in applause. (39:00-39:12. Fades out a bit at the end.)

In short (okay, not so short given all that I've babbled on about), the speech read like something of a campaign speech in disguise. Rather than explicitly saying "This is my plan for America" as a Presidential candidate would say, she was much subtler about it, instead implying it in a "This is what I think we should do" or "This is what I would do if I could" sort of manner. But truthfully, whether or not it was a campaign speech is of little importance, because in a room of 6000, I'd venture to guess she just secured 5800 votes for herself. I say only 5800 because there were some people under 18 there...and, yeah, my aunt said there were four eye-rolling Democrats in front of her who refused to applaud anything. Such is life.

The speech was heavy on the details. Unlike some interviews on Fox or on other networks where she often simply says "We need free market solutions," Sarah used specificity akin to that which was present in "Going Rogue," particularly when it came to which taxes need to be eliminated and/or reduced. Same goes for the content of the energy portion of the speech.

Oh, and by the way? Not a Teleprompter in sight. She did have a sheet of notes in front of her, but she rarely if ever used them. If it had been a speech, I would say it was delivered almost entirely from memory. But as said above, it was more of a talk, and thus came much more believably from the heart than her memory.

Enjoy!

Were the eye-rolling Democrats the reporters?? :-)

Great write-up, Kevin. I would have loved to have met up with you there. It was a great crowd. I didn't see anyone there who wasn't enthusiastically cheering. My favorite line of the night. Governor Palin was told before the speech. "Look at this crowd. It's like a Van Halen concert, to which she apparently replied: I WISH!

I put down my musings about the speech (and the after party) on my blog ...mainly about how many people who support Sarah still feel intimidated by the staunch opposition:

Just read your report, and added your blog to favorites.  I see a lot of people pushing the idea that Palin can't win a general election, to which I always say BS.  A 49 state win would be great, especially against a sitting president, but I believe it can be done.

thank you for posting this. I am listening to all of the youtubes for this. And I getting my daughter and sons to listen to this speech as well. They are too young to remember Ronald Reagan, so I want them to listen to this speech as well as Reagan.

I say this as a proud Reagan Democrat and now a Palin Democrat

thank you!

As I am listening to this woman, I can so see why the LSM and democrat's party is so frightened, as are RNC.  And you know what? They should be!

This woman is the REAL DEAL.

Thanks Kevin, off to the audio.

I'm going to listen to the speech now, but I was thinking, it would be cool if she could put her notes on her Blackberry, wear a portable mic, and step away from the lectern. Quite a contrast to a man tied to a Teleprompter.

like GAHanson, I have added a new favorite RD blog.  RD, I felt exactly the same you feel, about the negativity surrouding Gov Palin. People are so brainwashed by what they see in the media. Yesterday I told the person at work (I am a contractor financial reporting person) that I will be taking a day off Monday for "Get Motivated" in Houston.  [I did not talk about Sunday since it's weekend]. The gentleman I talked to is really nice and a hard working CPA. The first thing he said about it "oh I heard about it, Colin Powell will be there". Then I added "yes, and Giuliani and Sarah Palin". He then said 'oh, she did not know anything'.  I said, oh you don't like female politician? He said "No, not because of that, she does not know anything, at national and international level. I like 'Geraldine Ferraro' [By the way, GF is one of the board of directors of that company, and she is 74 years old, public info in the board profile].  At that stage I said "She is a very good person, moral characters and was very good at local government, she was governor'. And then he said 'but she did not know anything international'. At that time I stopped. I think we will waste time trying to convince those who don't like her.  Instead we should go and bring out all the votes of the people who have never been involved before and never voted before, like myself. I don't think the leftists who want to turn this country into Europe are the majority in this US. THANK GOD.

Thank you Kevin.....read your write-up and listened to Sarah speak........it was fantastic.....6000 patriots sure can make a lot of noise when they are inspired......and Sarah inspires like noone I have heard since Ronald Reagan.......anticipation for the Tea Party Convention Speech builds.....and builds......and builds

Thank you.

Bestbud,  February 6, 2010 10:39 AM

RD... Thanks so much...

...you're one up on me now, a third time to see Sarah, sounds like about the same size crowd we had at the College of the Ozark's... what Kevin said about the crowd leaning in brought back memories when seeing Sarah for the first time live that night, an experience I've never had toward a political figure in my life.

She talks not preaches, she speaks not lectures, she walks in not struts in, she gleans of commonality not elitism, she smiles not frowns, she's a neighbor not an agitator, she's a star not a starlet, she's motivational not confrontational, she captivates not capitulates... and most notable of all, She was, she is, and always will be... the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow!

Going to read your blog and listen but wanted to get this in to you quick.

ThomasLYN,  February 6, 2010 10:42 AM

Thanks Kevin I enjoyed your report and also listened to all the audio on speech. Sarah did a great job.

hooi4theGuv,  February 6, 2010 10:45 AM

I hv also added your blogspot to my list of favorites. Your pointers on how to reply to criticisms of her supposed weaknesses are very good. It would be a good idea to compile short, effective replies or rebuttals to the criticisms.

JP,  February 6, 2010 10:51 AM

First, I just wanted to note that I think it's way cool that Sarah will be addressing the Tea Party convention (and the nation via PalinTV, Fox, C-Span & MSNBC) on Ronald Reagan's birthday.
A bit of 'kizmit' there in the timing of events...

This was an incredibly amazing post.  Thanks for sharing.  I read the post, then listened to audio, which reinforced my continued support for Sarah.  There is no one out there in our political climate like her, a real leader.  As I listened, her 'conversation' resonating within me, her tone relaxed, easy (she knew she was among common sense folks), I thanked God she is out there, speaking for so many of us.

When Obama was telling the Democrats at their convention recently (and all Americans) to turn off their TV's and quit watching cablenews, he's probably hoping/wishing few will see Sarah tonight.  People are ready to listen to her now (the independents who were fooled by the LSM and Obama), and even the lamestream media know she's ratings gold.  Liberals are lobbing lame attempts to distract from the narrative with the emailgate stuff about Todd, but they'll be watching tonight.  Good.

One word to predict what tonight will be:  Pivotal (unlike to SOTU address).

Thanks again for adding this so we can all share in the experience.

Steven,  February 6, 2010 11:02 AM

It was a good speech, not her best, but I think we'll see that tonight. The Tea Party speech is so important to her primary strategy. She has to inspire these people and focus their message. She doesn't have to be the official leader, but she should be the accepted national spokesman for the movement. Otherwise the media and the elite will paint the movement with the likes of the inarticulate Tom Tancredo to discredit it. Sarah can mainstream this movement and make it more appealing to Americans depending on the message she conveys. Today I hope that she not only goes after the Obama administration, but also calls out the GOP establishment for not living up to its own platform of fiscal responsibility. The vacuum that created is what the Tea Party seeks to fill and she needs to speak to that today. Other than that it is exciting to see this woman in action, grabbing the proverbial bull by the horns and riding it out. Her path to the nomination is a complex one, but its one that it seems she is navigating thus far exceptionally (though the political correctness thing this week shows that even she is capable of mistakes.) God bless this woman and God bless the commentators of C4P. By the way, today is Reagan's birthday. Here's hoping his spirit fills Sarah tonight in her most important speech since the RNC convention.

Bravo, Kevin. Many thanks for recording the speech. I was gratified to hear her tout some of her accomplishments. A good warmup for tonight.

Only when you listen to it do you hear how well she connects to the common people. Now I know why Obama has been trying to destroy her.

Thanks, Kevin!  I won't be able to listen to her talk until next weekend, but think you gave me what I need to know in the interim.  Great work!

Jean, we are nice and sunny here in Florida, but we did see about 100 sharks in the water yesterday afternoon.  So, no beach for us for a while.  I know I am bragging about our sunny weather when a lot of you are under snow but we are expecting rain later this afternoon.

Denise J,  February 6, 2010 12:23 PM

Purity at it's finest. God surely has shed his grace on thee. Sarah Palin a timely blessing for America. May God fill her with his inexhaustible spirit, focus her thoughts, guide her words, and keep her safe and in good health.

manajordan,  February 6, 2010 12:29 PM

Thanks so much Kevin for the report. Really well done. Thanks so much for the audio C4P. Another great speech.

karenfromny,  February 6, 2010 12:38 PM

No teleprompter in sight.  When it comes from experience and from the heart, you don't need a teleprompter to tell you what to say.

Remember Rush at cpac last year, he talked for over an hour with not teleprompter and no notes....

Looking forward to tonight's speech.

CruelaDev,  February 6, 2010 12:39 PM

Instead of "Yes We Can"...

I think it should be...

"YES WE MUST!"

I listened to this speech, it was very good.  It made sense and covered a lot of ground.  Thank you for posting it, Kevin!

You were there, so you saw it and I only listened to it, but it sounded to me very much like a long, carefully written, detailed policy speech that is so very typical of politicans.  And it sounded like it was written by a seasoned speechwriter.  It did not sound like Sarah's words.  But I do think it will read well on her Facebook page and in print.  Also, to me it sounded like Sarah was reading it or at least memorized much of it word for word verbatim.  I do have to give Sarah some credit though, she did try to speak to the people in an intimate and familiar way at times, but trying to do it with someone else's words just seems too complex and doesn't sound entirely sincere for some reason.  Maybe Sarah just needs to work on this skill a little more, so that she sounds like she owns it.  But in policy speeches like this, details are extremely important, so maybe it does need to be read or spoken verbatim.  And she will have to deliver these kinds of speeches every once in a while because the message needs to get out there in her own voice sometimes, but I do think they must be hard for Sarah to do because they are so different from the way she normally speaks.  Her best speeches are when she is confidently prepared so that when she delivers them she only needs minimal notes (maybe just a list of points to speak about) and then can go for it just trusting and speaking from her heart.

I generally don't analyze Sarah like this, but I am doing it now in hope that tonight's Tea Party Convention speech will be different than last night's Salina, Kansas speech.  I hope that it is delivered not like a carefully prepared written policy speech, but a speech delivered with passion, speaking straight to the people in Sarah's own words, off-notes and from her heart.  Just like she did at the Republican Convention when she stole all of our hearts!

Recovering Democrat,  February 6, 2010 12:57 PM

Hey now, CD! Watch it! :-)

I thought the Colordao bashing was weird too. But then I'm not a native Kansan, and have only been here a few years. Must be a local thang to rip on the Buffaloes. I lived in Nebraska awhile and they were a little hostile to Boulder as well, except Nebraskans don't seem to hate on Colorado so much. Maybe with five national championships in football, they don't feel the need to mock a lesser. ha!

CruelaDev,  February 6, 2010 1:09 PM

Oh...It's always been a 4 State Bash Fest....Wyo, CO KS and Neb....
All in good fun!
Wyoming has the same saying..."It's only windy in Wyo...because Neb Sucks!"
LOL!

CruelaDev,  February 6, 2010 1:20 PM

When we had that massive Tornado a few years back that wiped out a whole town...it was Kansas folks that got their first to help because of the border town location....trust me...those things are never forgotten!

Recovering Democrat,  February 6, 2010 1:43 PM

It wasn't her best speech, true. It was a little ragged around the edges, but we discussed the fact afterward that she is more concerned with delivering a heartfelt message she believes in than polishing the form of her speech. She spoke over her applause lines a bit, and the end of the speech seemed a bit rushed.

I got two impressions:

1. She is really sad and pissed at Washington. Kevin was right. The tone in the room when she spoke of national security just became totally different. You could hear the pleading in her voice, the sadness about the decisions being made.

2. She is not trying to compete with Obama for pure polish. Obviously, by not using a telemprompter, she's the anti-Obama right off the bat. We discussed why Obama uses the teleprompter, and came to different conflusions among our little group last night. Two fellow C4Pers think it's because he's deeply insecure and doesn't want to make a mistake. I think it's because he's a perfectionist. Think of his perfectly creased pants. Think of his utopian view of government: to solve all problems, correct all errors. And I recall that Sarah's view of government is constrained, that it cannot, nor should it try to perfect us, or change human nature. And it's interesting that those two competing worldviews are so evident and apparent in their very different speaking styles.

AKReport,  February 6, 2010 1:51 PM

think of it as a warm up speech

SteveBayrd,  February 6, 2010 2:10 PM

May we all have the fortitude and courage to last until 2012 when this REAL president can lead us home!

karenfromny,  February 6, 2010 3:15 PM

I just listened to it.  I didn't think it was written by a speechwriter at all.  I thought they were her words.  But I do think tonights speech will be more inspiring and less on details.  She is getting better not speaking over the applause even though she still did it a few times.

And listening to the speech, it answered by question from last night.  She did use the phrase "that God shed his grace on thee".

lmg,  February 6, 2010 3:19 PM

I think this is not the speech in which to call out the GOP for its mistakes. She will be speaking directly to the GOP leadership soon, and that will be the time.

lmg,  February 6, 2010 3:23 PM

"<span>think of it as a warm up speech"</span>

Maybe, but she has to give them their $100K worth. Tonight's speech will be seen by millions, and so is extremely important, so I hope it is a)different (no boilerplate) b) specific to the Teaparty concerns c) knocked out of the park. I hope she's been able to watch some of the Teaparty speakers and sessions and adjusted her speech to address their issues.

blackbird,  February 6, 2010 4:29 PM

Thanks Kevin, I had to chuckle when you wrote "For those of you unable to listen to a 40-45 minute talk..." I guess you were referring to the undecided.

God Bless my friend and may God continue shower his blessings of life, liberty and happiness on us all.

alwaysfiredup,  February 6, 2010 6:23 PM

KState, which is right outside Salina, and Univ of Colorado are Big 12 adversaries, that was the reason for the Colorado bashing. My companion from last night is a native Coloradan, too. :)

Anonymous,  February 6, 2010 7:29 PM

Kevin, good post. I was there, too, and would just like to add my own impressions.
Besides the cheers for "America's finest," I noted also that huge rounds of applause accompanied her declarations that we need to:

* Permanently repeal the "<span>death tax</span>" which is so punitive toward farms and small businesses;
* Get more people with PRIVATE SECTOR experience into Washington;
* Stop "this insane debt" (she used that precise phrase at least three times);
* <span>Reform</span> health care coverage, but with an approach that is market-based, patient-centered, effective and workable. It must involve common-sense, liberty-respecting measures such as being able to buy insurance across state lines, tort reform, and allowing individuals and small businesses the same tax breaks for the health insurance they purchase as are enjoyed by big companies.

One phrase I remember her repeating was "other people's money." The whole time she was in both local office and statewide office, she and her staff were very much aware of the responsibility they bore as being entrusted with OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY. She didn't specifically mention Obama at that point, but the contrast was pretty obvious!

She very much emphasized that local and state governments are the way to really get things done, and she mentioned the 10th Amendment. That got some cheers, especially since one of the offshoots of our local Tea Party movement is a group that has been lobbying state legislators to start asserting state sovereignty more boldly and to simply refuse to go along with every order that comes down from Washington.

I was especially impressed with the way she oh-so-smoothly segued from praising Salina's incredible economic vitality, especially as compared to the rest of the country, into a discussion of national policy issues. Salina, while thriving now, cannot rest on its laurels, because the directives from an increasingly aggresive federal government do impact every family and business in America. She made it clear that if we want to keep our vital community vital, we have no choice but to engage on national issues.

According to the local newspaper this morning, people came from hundreds of miles away to hear her last night. Salina is in the center of Kansas, but people drove from as far north as Nebraska, as far east as Missouri, as far south as Oklahoma and as far west as the Colorado border. There really is SOMETHING ABOUT SARAH.

It was a nice touch when one of the Chamber of Commerce directors listed some of the high-profile speakers the Chamber has hosted in the past--former attorney general John Ashcroft, former British prime minister, John Major, and even Pres. George H. W. Bush when he was still in office. --and said that none of them had drawn anywhere near the crowd that was there to see Sarah last night. Oh, yes, there is most definitely something about Sarah....

Anonymous,  February 6, 2010 8:52 PM

I was THERE. She was not reading it. She had some notes that she occasionally referred to. She mostly was just TALKING to us. She struck me as authentic and passionate about what she was saying. I don't think the speech was someone else's words. It seemed to me of a piece with her Facebook posts. Do you think someone else writes those, too?
I don't.
