Obama, the Democrat Party, and Public Employee Unions

The Center for Freedom and Prosperity has released another of their "Economics 101" videos. This latest video highlights the gross inefficiencies associated with monopolies, particularly government monopolies such as the post office, Amtrak, and the public school system. As any economist who studies these issues will tell you, government run monopolies are maintained almost exclusively for the benefit of the public employee unions rather than for the benefit of those for whom they presumably work: the public. CF&P videos are generally succinct and easy to follow and this one is no exception:

This video's focus on the government run school monopoly is timely since the Democrat Party recently paid off a campaign debt to teacher's unions by killing the DC voucher program that allowed low-income families in one of the nation's worst school districts to send their kids to private schools:

The answer to the above woman's question, "Why?", is very simple. Obama and the Democrat Party is owned lock, stock, and barrel by the public employee unions, as Daniel Henninger chronicled in a recent column for the Wall Street Journal. He will never do anything to cross them, regardless of the fact that the low-income families he claims to champion are hurt most by failing public schools. And make no mistake, those hurt the most by Democrat fealty to teacher's unions are the children of lower income parents who are stuck in these disastrous government run schools with no chance of escape.

Obama and the Democrat Party have a fundamental misunderstanding of the concept of competition. During the health care debate he made the ludicrous claim that a "government option" was required to foster competition among the private sector insurance companies. That any government option would necessarily be subsidized by taxpayers and thus, shielded from competition, is a contradiction he and his fellow Democrats are unable to comprehend.

If Obama was interested in real competition, he would allow insurance companies to sell policies across state lines as Governor Palin and others have advocated. This would, of course, anger the public sector employees of state insurance bureaucracies whose sole reason for existing is to prevent this from happening. Public teacher unions have a similar goal. Indeed their goal is the same as it is for all public sector unions: to avoid competition and accountability while extracting as much from taxpayers as possible. In this endeavor they can count on Obama to do all he can to assist, regardless of the negative consequences to those not in the union.

Obama could have offered those kids in D.C. some real hope and change. Instead, he dashed their hopes and left them at the mercy of the D.C. public employee unions, to whom he pledges his true allegiance. I guess this is the kind of change Obama believes in.

The Center of Freedom and Prosperity puts out some great info. This is another simple straightforward presentation, and spot on too.

I read a book a while back called Miracle of East Harlem. It was about applying free market principles to a specific school district that completely changed things around for them. Its an excellent read. Competition works.

If there is one field of endeavor I wish the Republicans and even would devote more time and attention to, in addition how the popular culture favors the Democrats, is how the modern education system is brainwashing children into being Socialists and Marxists, environmental wackos and secular humanists.

Recently I was reading an article on unions (I believe it was at heritage.org) and they presented an interesting fact.  Private unions have an adversarial relationship with the employer and so the contract negotiations involve give-and-take and compromise.  But public employee unions, through their political action committees, have a big say in who the "employers" are i.e. the politicans they help to elect.  The result is the politician/employers for public employees tend to give sweet contracts to the unions.

An example is the former Democratic Gov of New Jersey who said at a union rally "We are going to fight for a fair contract".  What did he mean by "we"?  He was not a member of the union, but nevertheless so identified with the union that he saw their aim (a favorable contract) as his own.  The rest of his constituants, the poor taxpayers, had to pick up the tab for the union-favorable contract.

When I graduated from college in 1985 - in the era of Reagan - a college grad rarely, if ever, would have considered a career working in a state gov't or federal gov't job (unless it was something chic like working for the Foreign Service) as the path to an above average income and a retirement plan most foreign leaders would kill to have.    You were consider a mental lightweight if you chose to pursue a job in your state gov't office.      Capitalism was king, baby.

Now, what college grad wouldn't spend 24/7 on USAJOBS.GOV looking for a job as opposed to chosing the private sector.    I lost my job six months ago - after 24 years of uninterrupted career advances - because my company could go to the taxpayer and make them pay for our salaries.  150+ folks lost their jobs over six months.

I f--king hate unions to the core of my DNA (I've worked with Teamsters, UNITE, and the ILWU), but, if I had a child getting ready to graduate from college, I'd steer them toward that cushy federal/state job that pays MUCH higher than the average private sector job and guarantees you a pension plan most Fortune 500 companies can't touch.    My late mother was a school teacher but refused to join the NEA because she had their number back in the 1980's.  She always told me that I and the rest of us in the private sector biz world would have to spend BILLIONS training the kids that the NEA was purposely dumbing down.

One of the changes I would love to see in this country is to have our African-American population wake up and realize that they need to get up off their knees and understand that the Democratic Party is destroying them.

Unlike Chris Matthews I am not blown away to discover that Black people can walk and talk at the same time.  I grew up in the South and have always known that Black people can achieve anything.  But for the life of me, I don't understand how they voluntarily remain on the plantation.  They give 90% of their vote to the Democratic Party generation after generation and nothing changes for them!  They're so predictable with their vote that the Republican Party doesn't even try for their vote, why bother?  So where does that leave Black America?  Completely ignored because they painted themselves into a corner that is easily neglected.  They roll over for the Democrats, who don't have to work for their vote, and on cue from their Democratic masters, call all Republicans racists, without exploring their options.

I say to African-Americans, stop waiting for the handout and stop letting Liberal White America yank you by the chain.  Who decided that Al Sharpton is your leader?  Why do blacks need a leader anyway?  Is there an Asian leader in the US for Asian-Americans?

I say to African-Americans, gather your dignity because those of us who know our US History know that you've earned your dignity in this country.  Take control of your lives.  Take education seriously, strenghthen your families and strike out on your own, build businesses, build careers.  It's in your past, you've been there before, independent and strong.  Declare your independence from the Democratic Party because it's not in their interest to have you improve yourselves.  If you become successful and realize that you can make the best decisions for your lives, without self-appointed leaders and Guilty White Liberals telling you what to do, you will be free!

My God, please wake up.  Stop waiting for the last racist to die.  Racism to some degree will always exist because there's always going to be some idiots/fools alive on this earth.  But as long as you let the past define your future, you'll go nowhere.  We have immigrants arriving every day who come from countries that have been at war with the US at different times.  And they prosper and they move forward.  Look at the Vietnamese community.  How many millions of them died during the Vietnam War?  And still they come and prosper in this country.

Please wake up and build a better future for yourselves and your children.  You deserve that.

One of the NEA's biggest tools was to dumb down and re-write American history so that the average black student had/has no clue about Woodrow Wilson being out most racist president (but he was "good" in the NEA's eyes because he was a "progressive college president"). They have no clue about how it was the Democrats who beat down blacks (literally speaking) in the Reconstruction era.  They have no clue who Booker T. Washington was and how he was friendly to the Republican administrations of T.R. and Taft. They have no clue how Wilson's administration immediately fired the blacks that T.R. and Taft had worked hard to place in increasingly important gov't positions at the local, state, and federal levels.     The black students have no clue that capitalism is the most freeing " ism" in the history of mankind.

You keep your slaves  illiterate,  you keep 'em a lot longer on your plantation.
