Polls Close in Illinois/Open Thread (Update: Mark Kirk Wins GOP Senate Primary) (Update #2: Giannoulias Wins) (Update #5: Recount?)

The voting has concluded in the Illinois Senate and Gubernatorial primaries. We'll update when the victors are announced. In other news,

-CNN reports that "[s]ales from [News Corp.]'s book publisher HarperCollins rose 25%, and operating profits almost tripled, due to strong sales that included Sarah Palin's "Going Rogue."

-Missouri Congressman and the Senate candidate for the GOP Roy Blunt tweets that "[w]e are very pleased to have the support of @SarahPalinUSA and welcome her help in any way in our campaign."

-Sean Linnane from the FrumForum (not a misprint) writes that "[t]he popular conservative movement we are currently witnessing via the tea parties, the Sarah Palin booksigning rallies, the election results in Massachusetts, the overwhelming popularity of conservative talk show hosts etc – is not angry."

-Amy Siskind, a friend of this blog, writes an article titled "Sarah Palin and the 'Abortion Bowl'" for More magazine. I don't agree with her argument but it's worth a read.

-Rasmussen finds in "[t]he latest Rasmussen Reports survey of likely Republican Primary voters in Texas... Perry lead[s] Hutchison 44% to 29%, with Medina at 16."

-McCain leads by 29 according to his pollster or 16 according to Hayworth's pollster.

*Bumped

Update: Patrick Hughes has conceded. Congratulations to Congressman Mark Kirk. He will be the GOP nominee for the open Illinois Senate seat.

Update #2: It's going right down to the wire in the Illinois GOP Gubernatorial contest.

McKenna , Andy GOP 109,063 20%
Brady , Bill GOP 106,894 20%
Dillard , Kirk GOP 106,759 20%

Update #3: Bill Brady has taken the lead and will likely win his contest. On the Democrat side, Hoffman has allegedly called Alexi Giannoulias to concede.

Update #4: With 96.4% of precincts reporting, Brady holds a narrow lead:

Brady 149,985
Dillard 148,720

Update #5: Nate Silver's projects that Quinn will hold on and that Brady and Dillard possibly end up separated by one vote.

How did common sense slip past Frum?

techno, February 2, 2010 8:43 PM

I admit I am not an expert on the budget but when Rush says that this current proposed budget by Obama could literally break the bank, I have to ask myself about the Democratic folks in Congress, don't they know this as well? How could they allow a budget like this to be passed on their watch? With Obama and his czars, it's understandable why they want it passed. They're all Marxists and want to destroy the American economy and take the American way of life with it. But not all Democratic Congressmen and Senators are Marxists, are they?

Now as the RINO's in Congress, Rush asks them why they don't develop a backbone and resolve to fight tooth and nail to see that this budget is not passed. Are the RINO's also so stupid not to believe that this budget will destroy the country?

The pipeline is the one thing that Obama has not touched yet but it would not surprise me in the least if government lawyers right now are working on a scheme to stop its construction or to take over the complete project.

PatrickinOH, February 2, 2010 8:54 PM

Gee everybody seems talked out now, that makes me sad! :( How can we get things going again?

cookboy, February 2, 2010 8:59 PM

I think there's some collusion going on.

techno, February 2, 2010 8:59 PM

The strategy of the MSM and the right-wing blogs ignoring Sarah hasn't been working very well either. Sarah is using 2010 technology to the max and really the only way that Obama can stop her is to shut down the whole damn Internet, which I don't think even he could get away with.

PatrickinOH, February 2, 2010 9:02 PM

They are, does the name Larry Persily mean anything to you?

techno, February 2, 2010 9:06 PM

With the schedule that Sarah has not set for herself I think the "quitting meme" will eventually go by the board as the SNL stupid narrative already has.

narciso, February 2, 2010 9:07 PM

They don't think there is anything really at stake, yes it's like a tennis match you win, you lose some, wherea it's more like the Texas holdem (baccarat in the book) of Casino Royale

Whitney
Who was that candidate for Governor that you said you were supporting?

Ted Torgerson, February 2, 2010 9:26 PM

Well Illinois bucks the trend and goes for true RINOs. Kirk is the endorsed candidate of the kill babies for profit community. McKenna was a huge donor to Richard Durbin and Barack Obama.

RINO-Hunter, February 2, 2010 9:28 PM

Where the hell is everybody? It's dead in here tonight.

PatrickinOH, February 2, 2010 9:29 PM

Well that sucks. My deepest sympathies. Thank God we have John Kasich here in Ohio running for Governor, along with Rob Portman for Senate.

Get a load of Reid's response to Sarah about her leading the Tea Party Express in his home town of Searchlight Nevada.

Reid responded to Palin in a statement to The Post: "Make sure you stop by the Nugget for a ten-cent cup of coffee with free refills -- and make sure to say 'Hi' to Verlie."

Hmmm...things seem to be slowing down again.

Wonder if Sarah will do a Facebook about Oblamo's Organizing for America trying to brainwash kids in school........it needs to get more national attention. Also the Unsafe "Safe-School Czar".

PatrickinOH, February 2, 2010 10:01 PM

I bet Beehive is wondering why I'm not hitting the sauce...because I have classes tomorrow that's why!

Patty Hewes, February 2, 2010 10:20 PM

Mark Kirk has the best chance to win in the GE so I am happy he won.

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 10:20 PM

Grrr.....stinkin' Kirk got the nomination. I love Illinois, but we can vote to save our lives. Example #11238729847289

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 10:22 PM

Mark Kirk isn't really any better than a democrat. He may be fiscally conservative sometimes, but he's a flip flopper. We won't know what we'll get with him. Yes, he'll probably win the general election though.

PatrickinOH, February 2, 2010 10:23 PM

Seriously Whitney, is the majority of Illinois residents suffering from Stockhold Syndrome?

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 10:23 PM

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 10:30 PM

It doesn't help that we have an inept GOP who props up moderate candidates. I think though that a lot of people haven't taken the time to evaluate the candidates for themselves, having a primary so early doesn't help. Partly is that a lot of people aren't super conservative, so they probably feel that Kirk is an OK candidate, or they just vote for the "R" with the most name recognition or who have the most "experience". He is the only candidate who was in Congress. The other two "top" candidates--one is a lawyer without political experience and one is a former judge, but he's from "downstate" so he wouldn't have a lot of name recognition.

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 10:33 PM

defendAmerica, February 2, 2010 10:43 PM

It's interesting to see that liberals were calling for Rahm to step down before Sarah caught him making another stupid comment. I'm guessing she knew this when she specifically called for his resignation instead of asking for an apology.

Blood in the water. I think it's personal with Sarah when it comes to the Emmanuel brothers. Rahm's been sending his thugs to knee-cap her and his Dr. Mengela brother has kids like Trig in his sights with his Death Panels. That effects her more than we even know I think.

The Cuda wants Rahm's head on her wall--The Wasilla Way!

KeeleyH, February 2, 2010 11:03 PM

The MSM had their motive. But I'm not so sure if Edwards had dropped out of the race it would necessarily have helped Hillary. Many of Edwards' voters would have gone over to the Obama camp. However, Edwards' presence helped Obama in that Obama let Edwards be the attack dog against Hillary, while Obama stayed above the fray for the most part. Had Edwards not been in the race, Obama would have had to do the dirty work himself.

Meg Whitman’s Slap In The Face Of Sarah Palin Fans: Hiring Mike Murphy

"After John McCain went down in flames, his staffers went on the warpath. Not against him, for blowing it in the home stretch of the campaign. Not against the media, for abandoning the man who used to be their favorite Republican. Not even against Barack Obama.

No, John McCain's staffers ran to the press and savaged Sarah Palin at every opportunity. Why? To shift the blame away from moderates, who abandoned a moderate candidate, and in an effort to toady to the Left by trashing the brightest spot in the entire McCain campaign.

Now, one the worst of McCain's staffers was Mike Murphy, who ripped on Sarah Palin like it was his new job. Where was the loyalty to the campaign? Where was the respect for all the conservatives that thought choosing Sarah Palin was the best move McCain made in the entire campaign?

Here are just some of the things Mike Murphy said about Sarah Palin on the record.
Mike Murphy referred to the decision to pick Palin as"cynical" and "gimmicky."Gov. Sarah Palin is the political train wreck that keeps on giving. First, she was an awful choice last year as John McCain's running mate. -- Mike MurphyYeah. No, no, look, she has a constituency. She'll never be the nominee, I totally agree with David. I agree with Steve Schmidt, it would be actually a disaster if she was the nominee. I do wish my friend Steve felt that a year ago when a lot of people were asking John McCain to put her on the ticket. -- Mike MurphyNow staffers are, by their very nature, interchangeable. Yes, you try to get the best people you can, but there are 50 people who can do any staffer job.

So when Meg Whitman, who's running for governor, chose to hire Mike Murphy, what does it say?

It says that she holds Sarah Palin's many fans in the Republican Party in absolute contempt. She thinks so little of them and feels their support is so unwanted for her campaign, that she's going to hire a guy like Mike Murphy, who made more of a name for himself trashing Sarah Palin than he did working for the McCain campaign.

Well, here's what I say: Any candidate who hires Mike Murphy, Steve Schmidt, or Nicolle Wallace -- the McCain staffers who trashed Palin -- that candidate is dead to me. I don't care what his record is, I don't care what he says, and I don't care how important the race is -- if he wants a kind word on RWN, then he can buy an ad. I'm so tired of these Republicans who have contempt for the "little" people who put them in office and nothing says "I don't respect the base" like hiring staffers who have been all over the news trashing a popular conservative for no good reason. So, as far as I'm concerned, as long as Mike Murphy is on Whitman's staff, I'll support anybody but Whitman for governor."

Oh boy... here we go...We need to bring back Commonsense to CA.
I want to put a moratorium on all Bills...

Tommy Report, February 2, 2010 11:04 PM

Gang,

Tonight's apparent victory by Brady is great news for Palin. A strong social conservative relied on the downstate Illinois vote to win a primary. The establishment/moderate vote was completely split.

If you add Brady's totals to Adam and Proft's total, you get around 43% of the conservative/very conservative vote being split and Brady still winning (at the moment that is)

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 11:04 PM

I initially was going for Brady until I heard about Andrzejewski about 6 weeks ago.

Angela, February 2, 2010 11:06 PM

I hope she does not support him either, Whitney. It will make me upset if she endorses him. Just ignore him, Sarah, and focus on other races. Kirk is no good.

Tommy Report, February 2, 2010 11:07 PM

Spoke too soon...Dillard took the lead.

My point remains though...a rural, pro-lifer winning or almost winning on solely the downstate vote. It's good news for Palin in the Illinois primary and she'd do better than Brady in the non-downstate areas.

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 11:08 PM

uh oh. Dillard (Obama supporter) is ahead now.

sandrainoregon, February 2, 2010 11:08 PM

Beehive, February 2, 2010 11:09 PM

Oh my. LOL!!!

Angela, February 2, 2010 11:09 PM

I really, really dislike Kirk. He is very liberal on social issues and sketchy on fiscal issues. He is the wrong path for the GOP.

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 11:09 PM

Ha. Well, a non-Chicago guy. Bloomington isn't exactly rural.

ChillinInMN, February 2, 2010 11:15 PM

Good job on the Banner art for C4P - that's fun! They're such cute little guys! It was a busy day...I quick went through some of the comments, and now it's time for bed.

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 11:15 PM

Not to sound uncompassionate, but Dillard's dad passed away over the weekend. I hope that sympathy didn't play into people voting. Not that I don't offer my sympathies to him and his family.

Mia, February 2, 2010 11:16 PM

I think they are blocking my question...hehehe..

PatrickinOH, February 2, 2010 11:16 PM

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 11:17 PM

The percentage is still the same, but the overall vote difference is increasing for Dillard. Darn it.

PatrickinOH, February 2, 2010 11:17 PM

Night Chillin!

Beehive, February 2, 2010 11:19 PM

Well Tommy, you were right......

Kirk won...congrats I guess. Still will not get my vote.
Terrible.....population of Illinois is 13 million....look how many turned out to vote....not even a million. Shame on them.

I never thought Kirk would win by such a margin....thought it would much closer.
He had to win by name recognition only. The guy never showed up to any debates or anything.

Adam A...same thing....thought he would do much better. He turned out to be only a "spoiler" (as I heard one news guy say). What a shame.

Pretty disappointed**sigh**.

Whit....tell me again why we stay here????

PatrickinOH, February 2, 2010 11:20 PM

I don't know. Maybe people liked his stupid ads with Blago's hair on the capital building.

He is very disingenuous, trying to run as an "outsider" when he resigned as GOP chair to run for governor.

LT, February 2, 2010 11:28 PM

I agree, Whit. What disappoints me most is the lack of turnout from our state. As critical a time as we are in, I hoped there would be more passion...

PatrickinOH, February 2, 2010 11:29 PM

I wish Mark was here to accept his award.

Tommy Report, February 2, 2010 11:30 PM

Brady's within 700 now with 5% to go...

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 11:31 PM

Yeah, I've heard at most, turnout was 25%. Very poor.

Maybe Brady can pull it out, second best choice overall in my book. It's very close.

LT, February 2, 2010 11:36 PM

Good link, better than WICS's - thanks. I was hearing the turnout in the county was about 17%. That's less than the turnout last time after the tornado and all.

Huskers-For-Palin, February 2, 2010 11:36 PM

Did this site get hacked? The front pages has gophers on the upper right corner.

terri, February 2, 2010 11:37 PM

Chairman of the Illinois Republican Party...'nuff said.

LT, February 2, 2010 11:38 PM

Hmmm...looking on the other side, would a lame duck democrat governor be something to be wary of or something to be relieved by?

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 11:38 PM

Wow, that's a very poor turnout. I've only lived in Springfield for a 2.5 years, but I've heard that the primary turnout is bad because state workers don't want to declare a party as they fear it may affect their job.

an lifelong democrat-soon-2-B-independent, February 2, 2010 11:38 PM

I really hope any Illinios voters PLEASE vote for Kirk in november, even if you have to hold your nose and do it.

Alex G. has so many ties to disgusting mob-bank crap. Check out hillaryis44.org for the details.

PLEASE do not stay home, vote for Kirk, I know Mark Kirk is not very conservative, but at least he is not connected to the mob like Alex G.

PLEASE do not take the purist conservative road and not vote for Kirk, heck even as a democrat, he's too liberal for me, but the Alex G. man is not someone who should be anywhere near the US Senate, especially with all his mob ties thru his fmaily bank.

--just a concerned American voter and Palin supporter.

Don't tempt me!

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 11:39 PM

Those are Marmots. They celebrate Marmot Day today in Alaska! :)

Mia, February 2, 2010 11:41 PM

Has Cruela been around?

terri, February 2, 2010 11:42 PM

LT,

Who knows. I've lived here all my life and still can't figure out Illinois politics.
I thought it would be a very close race for the senate seat, so don't ask me.

So much for all this talk about the people being angry and wanting to "throw the bums out".

Beehive, February 2, 2010 11:43 PM

Haven't seen her. What's up?

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 11:43 PM

Hmm. I think that Quinn would be a better opponent as there is the early prison release and his not particularly strong go as a governor this past year. I appreciate that he always tries to go to as many fallen soldiers' funerals as possible, but he doesn't have particularly good admininstrative skills. I think the GOP can use that against him.

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 11:44 PM

Brady's up again by 1000+votes!

Mia, February 2, 2010 11:44 PM

Crew was having major pain in her ankle...Not Good...

LT, February 2, 2010 11:46 PM

Considering the opposition, I very well may. If there is a viable 3rd party candidate that could possibly be more than a spoiler, I would probably go that rout. Regardless, it will not be pretty. There will be bloodletting in the state GOP. I don't consider myself a member of that party, or any party anymore. I do know that Kirk is absolutely reviled by the conservative grassroots folks, and many are absolutely determined to go with a write-in rather than vote for him.

Mia, February 2, 2010 11:46 PM

Hey Nancy...You here?

Beehive, February 2, 2010 11:46 PM

What? Did she get in to get it looked at? Dang....I didn't know that.

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 2, 2010 11:48 PM

LT,
What do you know about Eric Wallace? He decided not to throw his hat in the ring, but seemed to be potentially open to an independent run. I haven't heard anything recently though.

Recovering Democrat, February 2, 2010 11:48 PM

I've been over on my local Wichita paper defending Sarah from the moonbats and RINOs who don't want her to set foot in our city! I'm Mother of Three. Help me out :-)

LT, February 2, 2010 11:49 PM

Excellent point - that is most definitely a factor.

LT, February 2, 2010 11:50 PM

Brady +2000 at 97%...

an lifelong democrat-soon-2-B-independent, February 2, 2010 11:52 PM

yes, I don't think people understand just how bad Alex G will be. I really urge every IL voter on this board to check out Hillaryis44.org, they have done a tremendous amount of research on this Alex G.

No one connected to the mob needs to be setting a foot in the US Senate.

I really don't understand this purist attitude, yes, Mark Kirk is not conservative, even as a democrat/Independent I completely agree.

But do these purist conservatives want a mob-related man in the US senate for 6 years? I mean really?!?!?!

Beehive, February 2, 2010 11:52 PM

Geez...
What did she do to it?

Mia, February 2, 2010 11:55 PM

She had surgery...I don't know when...but assume a while back...She told me... she will not do it again... no matter what...Worried...

PatrickinOH, February 2, 2010 11:56 PM

Hey RD, nice of you to drop by.

Recovering Democrat, February 2, 2010 11:57 PM

Granny!!!!!

LT, February 2, 2010 11:57 PM

Listening to a local radio station saying they interviewed Brady a few years back as he was trying to get prayer reinstated in schools. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a conservative.

Beehive, February 2, 2010 11:57 PM

Same ankle?...

PatrickinOH, February 2, 2010 11:59 PM

There is hope for Illinois after all. This reminds me of Ohio's state motto: With God all things are possible.

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 3, 2010 12:00 AM

Our state motto: State sovereignty, national union.

I don't know how many of our politicians know we have a 10th amendment.

LT, February 3, 2010 12:02 AM

Brady also introduced a state's rights resolution for Illinois (Dillard co-sponsored):

http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=0181&GAID=10&GA=96&DocTypeID=SR&LegID=47611&SessionID=76

Synopsis As Introduced
Urges the President of the United States, the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States, and the legislative leaders of each State's legislature in the United States to cease and desist, effective immediately, any and all mandates that are beyond the scope of their constitutionally delegated power.

PatrickinOH, February 3, 2010 12:03 AM

Ummmm.....2?

Beehive, February 3, 2010 12:03 AM

That's not good. Does she have pins and plates?

PatrickinOH, February 3, 2010 12:04 AM

This probably won't surprise any of you, but the ACLU has tried I don't know how many times to remove our state motto.

Mia, February 3, 2010 12:06 AM

She generalized...I think she used the term..wired...

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 3, 2010 12:08 AM

I hope I'm not speaking to soon, but it's looking good for Brady!

Whitney the Pipsqueak, February 3, 2010 12:08 AM

I hope I'm not speaking too soon, but it's looking good for Brady!

LT, February 3, 2010 12:09 AM

Yeah, I remember him. However, as soon as I became aware of him, he dropped out and I don't know why. It was a shame. He did seem really independent minded.

Beehive, February 3, 2010 12:14 AM

She better get in there and let them take a look....
Geesh...

TexMex, February 3, 2010 12:28 AM

That'a great news! I won't be able to watch while it's live. At best I can read ya'll reax. Gracias, Fox!

Interesting article about Rahm Emmanuel: http://freedomist.com/2010/02/03/rahm-emanuel/

You are so lucky RD that you get to see her twice in the next three months. I am super jealous, I only get to see her once in March.

Re: Texas GOP Primary

Ugh, I'm struggling here. I intended to vote for Perry, but I kind of like Medina now, especially after hearing a couple of interviews and her debate performances. Crap! Maybe I can vote for her in the primary on principle knowing full well that Perry will end up winning then vote for him in the general. Medina seems to be bleeding more votes from Hutchison than Perry. Truthfully, the governorship in Texas is so weak whomever is in office has absolutely no effect on my daily life. Most politicos here don't and most of the time I don't recognize them. I once walked right in front of the Dallas mayor as he was giving an interview at the Texas State Fair. It was a dick thing to do to anyone but I had no idea he was the mayor. I think I apologized by I may have been too busy eating whatever fried heart attack on a stick I had in my hand. I also may have been tipsy. Mmm, I love Shiner Bock.

Anyway, it's sad but I think Palin's support of Perry is the tie breaker for me. I'm confident he'll win the primary and I'll definitely vote for him in the general. I just may vote for Medina in the primary. Damn choices.

senator20526, February 3, 2010 12:43 AM

She just loaned her campaign $20 million dollars......She has already spent 13 million

LT, February 3, 2010 12:44 AM

The local radio commentator said that if the current leaders win their primaries, the gubernatorial general election matchup would be "Brady Quinn". Any Notre Dame fans out there? LOL

TexMex, February 3, 2010 12:45 AM

By sad I mean i'm not really voting on something I like about Perry, but that Palin likes him so he's okay by me. That's how highly I view her endorsement of him.

LT, February 3, 2010 12:46 AM

Also called Brady a "God and guns" kind of candidate. I think this commentator (who is liberal) was being a bit derisive, but I think its a compliment.

senator20526, February 3, 2010 12:47 AM

If you read the report..it wast made public until last week

PatrickinOH, February 3, 2010 1:02 AM

Bedtime for me. Night everyone, God bless you all.

LT, February 3, 2010 1:29 AM

Uh, oh...reports of uncounted absentee and early votes in Lake County. They are suggesting a 900 vote pickup for Dillard, which would put us into recount territory. Buckle up for the ride.

lonestar, February 3, 2010 1:30 AM

Do you think Perry has done a good job in TX? Is Texas doing well? Prospering? Have your taxes (excluding Federal) remained stable? Yes, I thought so. Perry has done an outstanding job steering the ship of our state.
If you live in Texas, you already know that.

An easy way to decide - Look at what they have done, NOT what they say they are going to do. Track records matter. The 2008 Presidential Election proved that.
I am very happy with our Governor and am actively campaigning for him. I will not campaign for either of the other 2 candidates should one of them win the primary.

lonestar, February 3, 2010 1:45 AM

It would have changed Iowa. We all know wthout Iowa, Hillary would have been the candidate of the Democrat Party.

lonestar, February 3, 2010 1:46 AM

Yes, vote for Medina and you will get Governor White from Houston.

lonestar, February 3, 2010 1:47 AM

Is Lake County the place where all the cheating during the Dem 2008 primary took place?

LT, February 3, 2010 2:00 AM

Hmmm, I don't know about that!

TexMex, February 3, 2010 2:03 AM

Nah, I'm entirely confident that Perry will win both the Primary and the General. I guess it's about wanting to have my cake and eat it too. I'm really digging this Medina chick. Look, basically, Perry hasn't done anything to piss me off and I'm no fan of KBH. She's fine in the Senate. There was no need for her to come back here and make a run for the Gov. Plus, I don't recall her being too fond of Palin.

*sigh*

I still have til March 2 to decide.
