Sarah Palin: Drillgate

Via Facebook:

Many of us appreciated the President mentioning in his State of the Union address that “tough decisions” had to be made regarding offshore drilling. People have had doubts about his seriousness in regards to domestic energy policy because our Department of the Interior is dragging its feet on Virginia’s offshore oil and gas leases. Still, we’ve held out hope that America’s voice will be heard on energy.

And now Vince Haley at Big Government reports this shocker:

In April of 2009, during a discussion about offshore exploration in San Francisco, Salazar said that President Obama directed him to “to make sure that we have an open and transparent government” and that “these are not decisions that are going to be made behind closed doors.” Salazar went on to say that President Obama wanted to make sure that DOI was “maximizing the opportunity for the public to give us guidance on what it is that they want to do.”

Yet, more than four months after the comment period ended, the Department of the Interior has failed to make any public announcement about the results, even though sources have told American Solutions for months the comments show a 2-1 advantage in support of offshore drilling.

It took American Solutions almost four months and the power of the Freedom of Information Act to finally uncover indirect confirmation that, out of over 530,000 comments submitted, pro-drilling comments outnumbered anti-drilling comments by a 2-1 margin.

In an email dated October 27, 2009, Liz Birnbaum, director of the Minerals Management Service, informs other Interior officials that a preliminary tabulation of the results of the comment period had not yet gone to Secretary Salazar, adding “[s]o the Secretary can honestly say in response to any questions that he’s [SIC] has not yet seen the analysis of the comments – staff is still working on it. I did, however, confirm to him the 2-1 split that these guys [at American Solutions] are emphasizing.”

When a public employee is on record condoning purposeful deception of the American people, the taxpayer should no longer have to fund his or her job. Secretary Salazar should immediately fire Liz Birnbaum for purposefully deceiving him, and in turn, the American people. It’s not possible for the Secretary to honor pledges of openness, honestly, and transparency in government if his staff is going to deliberately undermine such pledges.

Public opinion polls already measure near 70% support for offshore drilling, so the results from a public comment period that reflect the same public sentiment should not be surprising. But after all this talk of wanting the public’s input, Secretary Salazar and his team must find it a real stumbling block to have to explain all their anti-energy development actions in light of the comment period results to which they previously attached such great importance.

As Haley notes in his article, it’s astonishing that the Obama administration is dragging its feet on offshore drilling at a time when we’re so desperate for economic recovery and jobs. It’s no surprise that an overwhelming majority of Americans support offshore drilling: it will provide millions of good jobs and billions in revenue, and it will make us more secure by reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

Mr. President, we appreciate you asking for our input. We’ve provided it, so thank you for accepting it. With no time to waste, it’s time to listen to the American people – finally – and drill, baby, drill!

Nobody attackes like Sarah.  She holds Obama responsible for everything.  She goes for the head.

SarahFanUK,  February 9, 2010 8:56 PM

Bruises on top of bruises for this crap Presidency. They really should have left her alone to Govern Alaska. We win they lose (LOL)!

Hey Piasano,  February 9, 2010 8:58 PM

Once again Sarah goes to the heart of the matter, yet in several weeks she is coming to Arizona to try to give John McCain a boost. John McCain is against drilling in Anwar, he sides with illegal immigration, he voted agaiinst the bush tax cuts. There more things that Sarah and McCain don't aggree on yet loyalty forces this trip. C4P writers need to help bridge this impass for no one wants Arizona to become Sarah Palin's Waterloo!

This is all about the environmental wacko movement and the Far Left's determination to sink the American economy into the abyss so 300m + Americans will bow before the Messiah and say, "We love you, the Anointed one, Please can we have some more, sir."

Emily (Jane Austen),  February 9, 2010 9:02 PM

Excatly. Although I had no idea that nothing was said for a while.

In other news...

How can this woman be. So. Right?

For sure KC!

PatrickinOH,  February 9, 2010 9:15 PM

They discussed Gibb's mocking Sarah during the briefing today.  They both essentially said why do they keep doing stuff like that, it just makes her stronger.

SusanW,  February 9, 2010 9:16 PM

After watching Sarah be mocked and ridiculed on a daily basis by every network (except for FOX) it was really something to watch Hannity run that reel of Obama and Gibbs' gaffes.   I don't think I've seen anyone on FOX actually mock Obama's intelligence the way Hannity just did.

MarkRNY,  February 9, 2010 9:16 PM

Hey O, Remember the palm that you and your fat cretin Gibbs have been yucking it up about--it just smacked you in the mouth! As far as you're concerned, consider whatever's written there as writing on the wall.

"LOTUS>TOTUS"!

Izzy,  February 9, 2010 9:17 PM

You guys needed to see Hannity defend Sarah tonight... It was intense.  Please we need a video.  You do not mess with Sarah... Hannity will get you.  No wonder Sarah is very relaxed with Hannity.  I do not care what people think of Hannity but Sarah connects with him.

MarkRNY,  February 9, 2010 9:18 PM

Me too! I just gave myself one!

It seems Obama has painted himself into a corner on this one- if FoxNews picks this up and hammers it, what is the administration going to do? How can they not allow drilling? And you know that since Sarah Palin told him to drill it is the last thing he will want to do.

manajordan,  February 9, 2010 9:28 PM

Great take-down. It is almost unbelievable some of the things this admininstration is trying to get away with, almost. Sarah continues to do a great job of holding up a light on these issues.

Also, its nice to see Sarah promote a Big Government article. She and Breitbart hit it off.

section9,  February 9, 2010 9:35 PM

Hannity has this really bad habit of beating a talking point into the ground until it's not only dead and buried, but it's really, really ripe.

I love Sean, but he has no sense of limits. Comes from getting a good thrashing from the Jesuits, methinks.

Btw, Rebecca St. James is on Hannity's panel. Just held her palm up and it said "I love Sarah Palin"

Thanks Beehive.

Here's what I want to see on Sarah's palms next time:  Hope and Change.

Sarah is setting Obama up nicely.

There is no way that man and his cabinet are going to open up drilling, not off shore, not ANWAR, not anywhere in this US of A! (and he won't because the environmentalist movement has backed him a corner, AND most importantly he won't because he is so full of pride that he would never do anything that Sarah suggests - she knows this) -- she's defining the issues a good 33 mos ahead of election day 2012. She's good.

Do you think she plays chess?

"No. They just put me in the ad."

Obama is asking us to live with the inconveniences of his Socialism (healthcare rationing, higher taxes, out of control debt...less freedom.)  The distant view of a drilling platform (and the knowledge that greater energy independence and jobs accompany it) would be the least of my worries.

That was interesting.  It helps the fishmen, but does it help the fish?  Are these platforms acting as bait to artificially increase a local population?  I will watch this.  Thank you for responding.

The drilling platforms are not as ugly and as large as the ones you see now.  There are not many new ones because there has not been much off shore drilling.
Mexico has platforms closer to our shores in the gulf because it is now part of our water, yet  we can't even drill because of people like you....it is just stupid and affects our safety.

RINO-Hunter,  February 10, 2010 12:41 AM

I don't know if anybody else saw this, but it looks like David Keene and the CPAC faction want to bury the hatchet:

Elitists must swallow Tea
The Hill | 2/08/10 | David Keene

The Tea Partiers have spooked the political establishment. Many Washington insiders who cling to their faith in democracy while deathly afraid that people unlike themselves might actually get involved in politics are busy assuring each other at cocktail parties and on Sunday talk shows that the newly involved will lose interest before the next election. Or, better yet, they might turn on the Republicans who have thus far been the beneficiaries of their numbers and energy. The phenomenon began with last year’s town hall meetings. Hundreds and then thousands of people showed up at congressional town halls traditionally attended by a few dozen voters. Worse, attendees began asking questions.

Congressional leaders at first dismissed the turnout as a reflection of the lobbying prowess of special interests opposed to the president’s enlightened policies rather than popular concern over the direction he’s taking the country. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) rather famously told her colleagues that the town halls represented not the grass roots, but the grass tops, and could therefore be ignored safely.

Then came the Tea Parties. They drew not dozens or hundreds but tens of thousands of people in virtually spontaneous demonstrations that sprang up everywhere. When the numbers attending couldn’t be dismissed, congressional leaders attempted, unsuccessfully, to smear the attendees as racists or even Nazis whose involvement was to be condemned rather than welcomed.

If the Tea Partiers wouldn’t just go away quietly, Democrats hoped their exuberance would generate a backlash that would actually drive independent voters into the hands of Democrats by November.

Since that hasn’t happened yet, or at least didn’t in Massachusetts, Democrats are now busily predicting that the Tea Party movement will either implode or wreak havoc within the GOP as ideological purists use the movement to force candidates to move too far to the right to win elections. At the same time, they are warning people like Sarah Palin that associating with Tea Parties is the political equivalent of playing with explosives.

The problem with all of this is that the Tea Partiers have already shown themselves willing to rally around a less than ideologically pure candidate in Massachusetts, not because they were fooled but because they are sophisticated enough to know that winning matters. They may be new to politics, but they seem to know what they are doing, and their enthusiasm and sincerity have endeared them to many voters the politically savvy hoped would be offended by the movement.

All this carping is little more than the sort of wishful thinking one sadly can expect from politicians who find themselves in a corner busily trying to dismiss their opponents as irrelevant and assure each other that in the end all will be well.

It won’t.

It’s perfectly true that the Tea Partiers are squabbling among themselves. There are no clear leaders emerging, but there are quite a few who would like to jump out in front of this army of new political recruits, don the uniform of a general and declare themselves leaders. That they are so anxious to do so is evidence of the strength, rather than the weakness, of the army they seek to lead.

Focusing on the squabbling among people most of the actual Tea Partiers have never heard of is but another version of focusing on the few strange folks with weird signs who can be found at Tea Parties. Such reports may be marginally interesting and even [...]

Sandra,
As a gulf coast resident for many years, I can assure that the drilling platforms don't greatly affect the view since they are many, many miles off shore. In the daytime you can hardly see them and at night when they're all lit up their blinking lights just blend in with the stars. We as a nation need to balance our need for fuel and keeping our living environments as healthy as we can when there's 310 million of us. Have there been bad actors in the past? Absolutely, but the reaction isn't to swing from one extreme to the next. A free for all shouldn't be replaced by a total freeze. This nation needs energy to run, to grow and thrive and if we cut off one supply and try to rely on less reliable or shaky supplies we'll damage ourselves. And if these freeze policies were truly about environmental concerns then why do we have no compunction of buying oil from Brazil, Venezuela or Iran, who tear into their resevoirs and who don't abide by any standards?  Are we only concerned with our backyards, but to hell with everyone else's?
There's a sensible way to tap our resources and develop new ones. We can't go from oil to solar wind in one leap. We need a bridge to get there and oil, natural gas, coal and nuclear help build that bridge to get to our ultimate goal: relatively clean, abundant energy that fuels our growth and gives us an added layer of protection against OPEC or whatever dictator of the month who tries to hold the world hostage merely because they've been lucky enough to land on a natural resource.
Of all of Gov. Palin's policies, I am 100% behind her on this. It's one of my top interests and priorities.
And re: the sealife, Sandra, when a well stops producing they dismantle the platform but leave the planks which gets turned into a psuedo coral reef and creates some pretty need ecosystems. Nature finds a way to survive. Best we start playing along too.

txn4 palin,  February 10, 2010 1:16 AM

folks living off the coast of tx, louis, miss and ala have been looking and enjoying offshore drilling activities for many years.  these activities have been great for their economies, good for the country as a whole and have not hurt the environment in the least.

GAHanson,  February 10, 2010 1:25 AM

Keene himself, that's surprising.  Erick Erickson of RedState was first.  Now, I wonder if the pro-CPAC bloggers are going to life their boycott on news about Palin.  Little by little they will all come her way.  If Limbaugh, Levin, Bruce and others stay with her, and she can get the right blogosphere back on her side, that would be some very formidable assets.

HOUSTON, Feb. 8 --
The US Army Corps of Engineers denied a permit application from ConocoPhillips Alaska Inc. to construct a drill pad identified as CD-5 west of the Colville River Delta to expand the Alpine petroleum field on the North Slope.

A Corps statement said there are other practicable alternatives that would have less adverse impact on the aquatic ecosystem and still meet the overall project purpose in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska.

ConocoPhillips operates the field, which went on production in November 2000.

Following the corps’ denial of the permit, Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell said, “Just in the last 6 months, we’ve fought the federal government for tying up Outer Continental Shelf leasing, and for adding bureaucratic nightmares and costs with Endangered Species Act listings and critical habitat area designations.

“We’ve seen the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Environmental Protection Agency show reluctance to approve anything related to jobs in Alaska,” he said. “And then— first, by delay, and now, through their decision—Corps of Engineers continues to set back our nation's chances for economic recovery, domestic energy production, and Alaskans' prospects for jobs.” </span>

"<span>Other alternatives with less environmental impacts could include horizontal directional drilling but would require new permit applications."</span>

<p>Palin struck a sympathetic tone with the crowd, saying she shares the timber industry's worries of cumbersome lawsuits by environmental groups.
</p><p>"California is tough in this respect," Palin said. "Man, it is expensive to do business here and to get anything done ... I do think there's hope though, because more Americans are becoming aware of the absurdity of such a situation. Maybe California is just a little behind the times."
</p><p>Palin said she believes there's a way to harvest timber without damaging the environment but has grown frustrated by environmental activists who want to "lock up the land."
</p><p>"We sought to protect the diversity of our forests and our wildlife while sustaining jobs and subsistence for residents of our state," Palin said of her efforts as governor in trying to develop a vision statement for the Tongass National Forest in Alaska. Conservation groups and the U.S. Forest Service have fought for decades over management of the country's largest national forest.
</p><p>She defended herself as a conservationist.
</p><p>"We really do love our trees," Palin said. "I named my daughter Willow. Isn't that granola enough for them?"
