Tim Unruh: Palin Engaged in 'Kid Stories' Before Speech
Tim Unruh, at Salina.com, has an interesting article today about some of the behind the scenes activities which transpired at Governor Palin's speech last Friday to the Salina Chamber of Commerce:
Mindi Davidson was "quite nervous" at the thought of meeting Sarah Palin on Friday night, but she wasn't daunted long.
"Once you start talking to her, it's like talking to someone that you've known forever," Davidson said.
Sharing the head table at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce annual meeting, Davidson found she has a lot in common with Palin, despite her being a national Republican icon, former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate.
Before Palin took command of the packed Salina Bicentennial Center arena -- with about 6,000 in attendance -- she engaged in "mainly just family" talk with Davidson, the marketing officer and human resources administrator at First Bank Kansas in Salina. She was at the head table with her husband, Todd Davidson, an attorney with Hampton and Royce law offices in Salina. Todd is chairman-elect of the chamber board.
Mindi Davidson sat next to Palin's 8-year-old daughter, Piper, one of Palin's five children.
The Davidsons have three youngsters.
"We compared kid stories," Mindi said. "She's a very down-to-earth person, very easy to talk to."
A spunky child
Piper was "spunky ... kind of like I would imagine the governor would be like at that age," said Kendra Neuschafer, a Salina teacher who flanked Palin at the table.
"Neither one of us ate our food. We talked pretty much the whole time. I've always admired her, and to hold a normal conversation with her was thrilling to me," Neuschafer said of Palin.
A third-grader, Piper drew Kendra Neuschafer a picture and autographed it for Neuschafer's third-grade class at Meadowlark Ridge Elementary School in Salina.
Kendra's husband, Daran Neuschafer, owner of an American Family Insurance agency in Salina, is past chairman of the chamber board of directors.
Few were able to visit much with Palin, including those at a "very quick" pre-banquet reception, Mindi Davidson said.
Mindi learned there's not much difference between Palin the star and Palin the person.
"She is flat-out Sarah Palin. What you see is what you get with her," Davidson said.

I've never met Sarah....but I have spoken to plenty of people who have...and they all say the same thing: she really does seem to care what you have to say...she really does listen.
Look at this comment I found on a blog about Salina:
"I also watched Sarah Palin in person give a speech last Friday. Before her keynote address, the Chamber of Commerce in Salina, Kan. showed a 5-6 minute video about local businesses. Many in the audience, and even folks up on the stage with Sarah at the head table, tuned out the video and were chatting. People were by and large ignoring the video on the large screen.
But not Sarah. Sarah cranked her neck to see every second of the video. I watched her. Her eyes remained on the video, and she took notes about some of the people in it. Who else would give a darn? I mean the people in that video weren’t famous — they were just local business owners; some of them owned larger corporations. But it’s not like Salina, Kan. is critical to Sarah’s political future. Kansas always votes Republican for president. Yet, she gave people the respect of listening to their stories. If I were someone featured in that video I would have been impressed. Because Sarah DOES listen. She DOES care. We see it over and over and over again. That’s someone I would love to see representing the people in DC."
SusanW,
Thank you for posting that comment! It gave me goosebumps! Governor Palin is extraordinary! She is a something else.
A.
And, Sarah mentioned some of the businesses in the video as examples in her speech.
The video on the companies was interesting. I think it was interesting to Sarah. The locals may know much of it and many people would tune it out, but it was worth listening to. I think Sarah finds the world, the people, the animals, the plants, the geography, and the businesses interesting. That is a big part of what makes Sarah Sarah.
I think it's time Sarah put a Take a pic of her hand and post it on facebook with the words "why So <span>Serious?" or 57 states.</span>
or write 50 States crossing out 57 states.
would be pure <span><span>Genius </span></span>
I think that Sarah's greatest quality as a leader i her honesty and genuine-ness. We need someone who is not afraid of the truth.
Run Sarah, Run!
I could easily see the video screen. Sarah was sitting at the head table, facing away. She had to turn and look up and over to watch. It was not set up for the head table to watch.

Here is a great commentary on Sarah... very positive for us...
http://politics.theatlantic.com/2010/02/sarah_palins_presidential_strategy.php
Sarah takes the time for Middle America. Do you remember what Obama had to say about Kansas during the campaign?
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,270852,00.html
Obama said that 10,000 people died in a Kansas tornado when the number was 12. I don't say that to diminish those deaths, but it seems to indicate his inability to remain in touch with Middle America.
What a great inside story. What's even better about it, is that it is not unique. Anyone who spends time with her comes to that same conclusion. What a gem.
Hee hee ... Thanks Susan ... that was my post :-)

Hi Susan, good to have you here. :)
email from Sarah:
<span>
Dear Supporter,
Last month marked the one-year anniversary of Sarah PAC, and I want to personally extend to you my sincere thanks for your support and our shared goals of common sense solutions and values. It's been an incredible year and 2010 brings us the opportunity to continue that success.
</span>
<span>
In this pivotal election year, we have an opportunity to focus our direction and spread the ideals on which our Nation was founded. There are ripe opportunities in campaigns across the Country and winning these races will be our focus. Thirty-seven Governorships, one third of the United States Senate, and the entire House of Representatives is up for election. There are State Senate and State Legislature races where only a few seats mean the difference between more of what we have seen or what we share as a vision for this great Country.
</span>
A, that's what I found so fascinating. It was not set up for the head table to watch. But Sarah wanted to watch it. The way she had to strain to watch it, I was worried she was going to get a neck spasm but her head DID NOT TURN AWAY the whole time.
And at that moment, I just realized: she gets it.
I have to repeat the story I told "A" and "AlwaysFiredUp" at our dinner after the speech.
I met Sarah at her booksigning in Springfield in Dec. My cousin and I were the 3rd and 4th in line. The gentleman and his son ahead of us had driven over from Arkansas. The father had an important fundraising "idea" he wanted to run by Sarah. I had heard his idea over margaritas the night before. Maybe it was the tequilla, but I didn't really get it! Ha! But I watched as Bob interacted with Sarah. He was so nervous, and he was looking down at his paper with the proposal. Not once did she look at him with any kind of eye roll or condescension. She actually spent more time with him that we were allotted, and I saw her asking questions, nodding her head, and she said: "I think you've got a great point. You're right."
The bottomline: She gave the the respect of hearing him out. I can well imagine other politicians being polite, but not really listening or maybe feeling like they had to rush him along.
Sarah takes time for people. That's what makes her different. I wonder if Bob has heard from her people.
<span>
We are in a position to help make this change and I hope you will again join with us to renew your support of Sarah PAC. Your involvement is an honor and your continued support is critical to provide the ability to support those candidates and campaigns in all areas of our Nation.
I will be on the campaign trail for our candidates across this great land and with your help we can make our position stronger and increase our chances of bringing our core beliefs to the Country we love.
With an Alaskan heart and national pride, thank you for your generous support and best wishes for a prosperous and free 2010 for you, your families and those you love.
</span>
the Perfect comback would be a Pic of her hand posted on Facebook with the words “Wheres the Jobs?, Mr. Gibbs”

I agree with all who say there are so, so many ways Mrs. Palin can take advantage of this hand incident. I'm sure she will. There are millions of us who scribble on our hands all day. Plus I call my office and leave myself voicemails and send myself emails. Busy people find ways to stay on top of things.
That being said; I love the idea of Piper drawing and autographing a picture. I love the spunk in that little girl. I say this as a compliment, Piper has never met a camera or microphone she didn't like. She just might be our second woman president.
Bravo for you Recovering Democrat!!! We need to hear those good, sweet stories about Sarah.
Wow...I hadn't heard that story. As much as she is a pitbull in the political/media arena, she treats "her people" with a real motherly kindness.
Piper might be a great VP.
If it is a Sarah/Piper ticket in 2012, will Obama want to see Piper's birth certificate?
LOL she couldn't be any worse than Biden. Though I don't see her being able to sit still behind the President during the State of the Union speech.
There is the whole constitutional age requirement. Piper for chief-of-staff! :)

Hey recoveringdemocrat,
Is that your palm I saw over ar freep???..Boy you really started something over there. ;^0
Has anyone else noticed that C4P twitter account is no longer working. It is not even available. It is history.....
Over at HotAir, Allah is talking about Gibbs' mocking of Governor Palin and he shows a CNN video clip. The title of the CNN video clip is "Gibbs backhands Palin."
Where is NOW denouncing this overt display of violence against women?
What idiots!
^^^^techno.....Saw that.
Best comment....
"Thank You Sir - May We Have Another?"
By mocking her, not only does he show the White House's fear of her, but he just ensured that Conservatives will rally around her even more.
In effect, by elevating Sarah, he puts her on par with the White House. Gibbs just put Huckabee, Romney, and Gingrich's future campaigns in the toilet. These men must be crying in their beer.
He has effectively handed the 2012 Republican nomination to Sarah.
Death wish!
There have been a number of articles today and yesterday that clearly show Sarah Palin is the most influential politician in America today, short of the President. This one is from Chris Cizzilla at Wapo:
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/eye-on-2012/sarah-palins-soundbite-strateg.html
Here are a couple of Cizzilla's quotes if you don't want to go to his site but I suggest you do:
<span>"Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has mastered the art of the political soundbite and has used it to devastating -- and some would say irresponsible -- effect since emerging on the political scene in the fall of 2008."</span>
<span>Like it or not, the "death panels" idea she floated on Facebook wound up badly damaging the Obama Administration's push for health care reform -- helping to drive up doubts among seniors about what the plan would and wouldn't do. (Yes, we know that the death panel charge has been entirely debunked. But, is there any question that it slowed momentum for the bill in a significant way?)</span>
Good pickup jimr3.
The White House mocking her is a new low for them, but it proves something we all already knew: she has the upper hand these next few years and she's not afraid to use it.
Good grief there they go again. As I said yesterday when Morning Joe said some Republicans leaders wanted to get rid of Sarah I said good.
If they must go the only one talking on behalf of the GOP should be Paul Ryan. Ryan's plan makes a whole lot of sense- common sense, and he can articulate it better than anyone. All of theses other tools are only looking for face time.
Nice pun there, Yogi....upper hand....hehe....
Governor Palin should, at her next speech, set up two large teleprompters and begin reading from it... and then stop in mid-sentence and ask for stage-hands to come out and take them away because they're getting between her and the People.
Don't ever underestimate the warped, diabolical minds of Obama, his war room or the Far Left. Always remember, they are not stupid. They know exactly what they are doing, and what I think they are doing is admitting first privately but now publicly that Sarah Palin is not going away and that they must do their best to prepare their side for the eventual showdown against her in the 2010 midterms, stir up the passion of their side, raise their interest to GOTV and vote. And they feel a complete focus on Sarah Palin will do that and they might be right.
Yes, I know there will be between 1200-2000 candidates running nationally in the midterms but with the presence of the 24/7 news cycle and the omnipresence of the Internet and modern technology the focus imho will be primarily on two people: Sarah Palin and Barack Obama. Everyone else will be bit players or extras in this titanic "duel in the sun".
since we're talking Alaskan Palm Pilots and Teleprompters,
look at this...very funny....
http://www.anorak.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/obama-teleprompter1.jpg
Again if Obamacare is sent down to Davy Jones' locker, Sarah's participation in nixing it would make her imho one of the greatest 10 Americans ever.
Hope Sarah Responds to Gibbs.
Oh by the way, unlike past presidents, Obama will have no reluctance to actively campaign in the 2010 midterms, because that is what he does best.
Well, she'd have more maturity than our current chief of staff. THAT is for sure :-)
Gibbs really likes Sarah and is looking ahead to a job in her administration in 2012.
No, must be another Recovering Democrat. There are probably millions of us.
Oh, and not that anyone cars, but I hate having Democrat in my screen name. I hate, hate, hate my former party. HATE. I only keep it in there to hopefully knock a few more people off the Kool-Aid, and show that it is possible. The party that nominated Dukakis, Gore, Kerry, and elected Obama. (Sorry, I still have a soft spot for the Clintons).
In no way shape or form am I actually a Democrat. I am a registered Palin Republican.
CAn you show us the link, Terri?
I'm not even talking about that....I'm talking about the other potential Republican nominees. None of them will get Conservatives rallied around them for 2012, because Gibbs just insured that Conservatives rally around Sarah.
Huckabee and Romney are the ones in full-out panic mode. They know they've lost their chance at the nomination.
palin has been very busy over the last 10 days or so. i know she has daytona over the weekend but does she have anything before then? she needs some downtime but it has been so much fun these past few days not sure i can stand it.
I laughed when she said that!
CT....I don't think this is a very complimentary article.......
..."The art of political soundbite"....oh you mean speaking plain and simple instead of rhetoric??
..."and some would say irresponsible."....Oh you mean calling it like you see it, instead of thinking the emperor has new clothes?? Too bad if some people can't handle the truth.
..."Yes we know that the death panel charge has been entirely debunked.".....Oh it has????must of missed that one.
..."Palin's way with a folksy zinger is nothing new"... It's only a zinger if it's true. Plus I say, better a "folksy zinger" that out and out lies anyday.
..."Her critics roll their eyes at these lines, concluding -- rightly in many cases -- that simplifying incredibly complex issues down to a catch phrase is lowest common denominator politics that won't ultimately solve the major problems facing the country".....
Really?....I think her "folksy zingers" are just that, zingers.....not policy or problem solutions.
..."Palin's ease around a soundbite stands in stark contrast to the preferred rhetorical approach of President Obama who clearly believes that the soundbite culture has led to the dumbing-down of politics and, as a result, resists engaging in it".....Ummmm, no comment necessary.
..."There is, of course, a limit to how far a soundbite strategy will get you. While Palin's pithy one-liners win her applause from like-minded crowds and help influence the debate, she remains poorly regarded by major swaths of the population who believe she is not adequately equipped to serve as president".....Elitists...'nuff said.
..."Palin's refusal to give any interviews to members of the media or offer any sort of detailed policy proposals of her own speak to a glaring weakness in her overall strategy"...
Ummmmm, the woman's been all over the tv, guess chris missed it, he really should learn to tivo. Besides, Sarah IS aprivate citizen, don't know any private citizen that has "policy proposals".....do you??
Techno, they may not be stupid but I don't believe them to be wise. Obama's and his staff's narcissism get in the way of sound judgement.
Ace hads two threads up on Bagdhad Bobby Gibs's foolish stunt, here and here. Some of the comments are priceless (strong language warning as always with AoS).
<span>Ace has two threads up on Bagdhad Bobby Gibs's foolish stunt, here and here. Some of the comments are priceless (strong language warning as always with AoS).</span>
Techno, I am merely talking about her war with other potential 2012 nominees. The more the White House mocks Palin, the more Conservatives rally to her, and in effect, they DON'T rally to Huckabee or Romney.
Huckabee and Romney are the ones upset today.
^^^me too. This could get really really fun.
Really...or just make it plain and simple....Palin 2012.
What I am saying is two can play at this "rallying game" and that is what I think that Obama and his merry men and women have decided to do. To them Romney and Huckabee have been non-factors since Palin's resignation.
Well, techno, you may be right ... But the administration's bashing of Sarh over Death Panels didn't really play out, um, well for them, did it? This could have the same effect. By elevating her for what they assume will be near-universal ridicule, they inadvertantly give her even more publicity and power. They give her a platform. If they want to make her the "villain" ... well, then people who don't really like Obama's policies are gonna start seeing her as even more of a hero.
Here's where they're making a fatal error, in my opinion: They're treating Sarah like they've treated GOP men like Gingrich and Limbaugh -- old white slightly tubby men.
It's easy to villanize old white slightly tubby GOP men.
It's quite a bit more difficult to villainize a physically fit, attractive, young, vibrant mother of a Down Syndrome child.
The villain thing is gonna wear out pretty quickly for all but the truly deranged Kool-Aid drinkers. But then, maybe that's their goal: fight like hell to keep the Kool-Aid drinkers. They've already lost the independents.
A great line from Abby Adams at HA:
"Sarah Palin doesn't just drive the national debate. Sarah Palin IS the national debate."

I agree it's not the most complimentary and most article written about Sarah in Wapo aren't. But it clearly shows that the kitchen table staff in Wasilla, AK is having a huge influence on the Obama agenda.
Then again, women politicians have been villainized forever. I just feel like a giant backlash is coming. Women are sick of it.
Perfect breakdown, Terri.
I didn't say it was complimentary. It does show that the kitchen table staff in Wasilla, Alaska is having a huge influence on the Obama Agenda.
I guess I am more focused on how this effects Palin's chances in Iowa, NH, and SC. LOL
People who were torn between Palin and Huckabee, for example, after seeing her mocked, will choose Palin.
People who were torn between Palin and Romney...same thing.
Palin has this ability to rally supporters to her defense. When she's attacked, her approval rating among Conservatives and Republicans goes through the roof. And that high approval rating is what she'll need to secure the nomination.
The only people Gibbs will rally is die hard liberals. Independents have already turned their backs on Obama and making fun of Palin is not going to make them support Democrats or Obama again. They are too pissed at his policies.
Oh, Whitney, you silly girl. Don't you know when The One misspeaks it's just because he's tired from the rigors of his important calling, not that he's "out of touch" with the commoners? ;-)
And to follow up on what Abby said, Sarah is a genius to even make news on her day off.
Thanks Terri ... that was FUNNY!

You know how we mock Obama as no world leader listens to him. Well, today proved that not even his own underling listens to him. The Gibbs stunt came minutes after Obama called for rising above petty politics. Hah, it shows how ineffectual and effete a leader Obama is. Sarah should call him out.
Angela:
The number one rules of politics is to first secure your base. Then you move on from there.
What a fly-over country story that is... "She is Flat-Out Sarah Palin" "What you see is what you get with her".
That last quote of Davidson just struck me... We see Sarah as Davidson and are elated!... mater of fact, I see what I get from the left and am elated too, proud is even a better word, darn happy Im not like them, let them be as they are!
That begs the Question? Why can't the left be happy they don't get what the see in Sarah? It just infuriates them! Leave us alone and let us be the way we are and go their own way.
It boils down to the fact they can't CONTROL us and keep us SUBSERVIENT to them... where as we could care less if they stay the way the are, more power to them.... just leave us alone.
All that to get me to this point... We are Happy Campers either way... the left is only happy when they get their way.
Excuse me for this, it's just that I have to circle the world sometimes to just get me across the street.
Just as Huffington wrote a semi-positive post on Sarah Palin yesterday, Taylor Marsh follows it up today with a post of her own:
"Mitt Romney’s lack of emotional connection with voters works against him, even as the economic climate plays into his strengths. But Palin’s evangelical roots have the potential to wipe him out in the primary. As for Mike Huckabee, Sarahcuda will annihilate him with negative ads on his pardons, so it remains to be seen if his current popularity can withstand her onslaught, which will be unflinchingly devastating. As Sarah Palin has no compunction about playing hard and dirty.
As for the Republican Establishment, Sarah Palin has no intention of going the Hillary Clinton route. Palin knows they can’t stand her, fear her and will stop her if she gives them a chance or waits for their nod. Something Hillary never grasped of the Senate Democrats who worked behind her back to encourage Barack Obama to run. All’s fair in politics, but Hillary missed what was happening all around her. It’s not that Democrats hated Hillary like the GOP Establishment does Palin, but people from Harry Reid to Ted Kennedy to Nancy Pelosi were rooting for Obama, some long before Hillary even announced, with key players offering their support to Obama in private and long before it was made official."

http://www.taylormarsh.com/2010/02/09/sarah-palin-wont-make-hillarys-mistakes/
I didn't realize Marc Ambinder wrote an article about Palin today. This, from his post, jumped out at me:
“If the primaries were this year, I suspect she’d be nominated,” a senior adviser to one of Sarah Palin’s potential rivals confides. It’s easy to see why: no one who’s thinking of running beats the enthusiasm she generates among Republican activists. But there is more to the case for Palin than just the confluence of her personality and a vacuum within the Republican Party: there is a method to her management of her public image. It strongly hints that she has pretty much decided to run for president in 2012, unless something knocks her out of the race; it is more organized and structured that it appears; and it is something that Republican insiders, in particular, will ignore at their peril. … – Marc Ambinder
Obama's potential defeat of Obamacare cannot be attributed to his stupidity or the stupidity of his staff but to Palin's use of "death panels" and a multitude of factors or variables that arose to delay the final passage of Obamacare until Brown could be elected. So I would argue that if Obamacare is finally derailed for good, it was not because of Obama and his team being incompetent, misguided or ill-informed but the simple fact that DIVINE INTERVENTION may have occurred in the form of Sarah Palin and "death panels".
SusanW
God Bless you for sharing with us this incredible story... Thanks a million.
RD,
Good job! What a fun idea and one that will take off in cyberspace. The Progressives will rue the day they made this their line of attack.
RD
I must have missed this on you blogg... God Bless you heart for writing it to start with, must be a warm feeling to know others are passing it on.
Oh they aren't ignoring Sarah. They're plotting to destroy her. Did you see what Meghan McCain said about the Tea Party? Racists. And Steele comes out claiming his detractors are racists.
The GOP establishment is going to try to paint the Tea Party wing as "too extreme." In other words, copy the DNC talking points, while holding up Mittens as the "safe choice."
I think Steele is to spineless (ironic, isn't it?) to realize that he could totally throw the establishment under the bus and embrace the Tea Party. He must really think they're all racists. I feel sorry for him. The GOP establishment just uses him and Steele can't figure out what side his bread is buttered on.
Oh, yogi, it's another RD, not me. I'm not nearly that fast with technology :-)
Bret Baer: Strange to see (mocking Palin) at the White House podium.
Major Garrett: Sarah Palin remains an obsession of the White House.
But techno, this is good for Sarah.
Don't conservatives make up 40% of the electorate and liberals 20%?
So if BO counts on his base and Sarah on hers ... who gets the better of that deal?
How this,
Obama thinks we have 57 states, I know we have 50. ;)
Good article. But I started reading the comments after the article, and those people just don't get it at all. Same old derisions, same old talking points that are refuted by the facts in front of their faces.
Excellent! They're doomed!
