"No More Traffic" Blog Proves Our Point For Us (Update: Ultra-Liberal Lawrence O'Donnell Admits Yukon Did Not Have Single-Payer Until 1972)



A liberal blog named "No More Mister Nice Blog" challenges Ben Smith's update that stated "[s]ocialized medicine apparently only kicked in in Yukon in 1972, post-Palin."

First of all, the only reason why I'm even aware that this blog exists is because of memeorandum. I didn't recognize that memeorandum also linked to liberal blogs that do not get any traffic. But why not give this chap named Steve M. some charity and visit his blog for one day as he unintentionally helps defuse the "hypocrisy" argument.

He claims that the following from the "Inventory to the Records of the Yukon Government, YRG 1, Series 12, Territorial Treasurer Records, 1951-1969" proves....something (emphasis added):

The Yukon Health Insurance Service (Y.H.I.S.) came into existence on July 1, 1961 to provide hospital insurance for all residents of the Yukon Territory...

Y.H.I.S. provided hospital insurance for Yukon residents without cost, as long as they had lived in Yukon for ninety days.

The phrases for which I have added emphasis prove the very point that destroys the "hypocrisy" charge. The source cited by this liberal blogger clearly states that the healthcare system that Yukon had in place prior to 1972 was available to Yukon residents. Governor Palin's family (the Heaths) were not Yukon residents, meaning that the Heaths could not have received any benefit from the hospital insurance plan described in the link as they were not Yukon residents.

I'll concede that the question over what different areas of Canada had in place in the 1960s is confusing but I'd like to thank toolboxes such as Steve M. that operate rarely visited liberal blogs for helping paint a clearer picture that Palin did not benefit from "socialized health care," a charge that the left has been making wildly this entire day. In fact, please visit his blog and leave him a comment thanking him for his assistance.

Canada was not born with the single-payer system it currently has. In fact, the full-blown socialization of its medical sector was a long time coming and was not in anything like its current state in the 1960s. In the early '60s, Canada had passed laws pushing universal access to hospitals; in 1966, the Medical Care Act allowed each province to create universal coverage systems, which took years to fully implement. It was only in 1984 that the current system really came online in the Canada Health Act, which banned patient fees and billing by doctors in excess of what the government paid.

Well, here’s the most immediate problem: Sarah Heath, who was to one day become Sarah Palin, was born in 1964 in Idaho. Her family moved to Skagway, Alaska while she was an infant. At the most, she would have been 6 years old when her brother was taken to Canada to get treated for his burned foot.

I don’t think the six-year-old Sarah was calling the shots on where her family got health care.

The other problem is that Skagway, Alaska is extremely remote. In the 1960’s in order to get from Skagway to a city with a hospital in America you’d have to drive to Haines (and) take a ferry down to Juneau. Not exactly the fastest way to travel in an emergency. On the other hand, you could drive on the Klondike highway to Whitehorse.

I know this because I’ve been on that Haines/Juneau ferry, and I’ve driven from Whitehorse to Skagway.

Now, if I had a little boy with a burned foot that needed medical attention I’d want the quickest route to care I could find. If a Canadian hospital was closest, so be it.

Finally, while I’m not entirely sure how Canada’s government-run health care system works, something tells me that US citizens don’t get free care. Meaning that even if the Heath family went to a Canadian hospital, they weren’t being subsidized by Canadian tax dollars.

Update #4: Steve M. responds with the following in an update:

[Conservatives 4 Palin] think[s] they have me dead to rights because (a) the Yukon health system wasn't fully socialized in the '60s and (b) the Palins were using it as U.S. citizens.

Steve, we've got you dead to rights. What you seem to concede with point (b) destroys the central thrust of your argument. Your argument is that Palin is a hypocrite because she benefitted from socialized healthcare as a 5-year old in Canada. As evidence, you cite the fact that Yukon had implemented a hospital insurance plan in 1961 to rebut the argument that Yukon had only implemented what we know now as socialized healthcare in 1972. However, the Palins could not have benefitted from the hospital insurance plan that you cite as evidence because they were not Yukon residents. The only people who could have received the benefits from the very hospital insurance plan you cite as evidence for your hypocrisy argument are Yukon residents.

Knowing that his argument has been punctured, Steve does what some liberals do and that is create a straw-man. He asks whether we are "the same people who think even a minimal amount of additional government intervention in the U.S. health care system will turn our hospitals and doctors' offices into hell on earth?" Nope. I cannot speak for all conservatives but I support the Emergency Medical and Active Labor Act that provides anyone needing emergency assistance access to hospitals. This type of legislation is reasonable in my opinion.

Update #5: Tonight on MSNBC's Countdown, the ultra-liberal Lawrence O'Donnell effectively concedes that the hypocrisy argument is bogus as Canada did not have single-payer implemented until 1972 (at around the 4:21 mark if you want to watch the video).

I actually think that most American's have no idea about most of this stuff.  I was talking to my mom earlier today who loves Sarah and she knew nothing of any of the recent ridiculous attacks/retractions.

 She doesnt like or watch the news for the most part.  She doesnt follow the "drama".

She is the kind of voter that would watch Sarah on her Alaska documentary show... and form her opinion there.  Or on Oprah or Leno...  that's why it is so important that Palin continues to show up in these venues!!

Skagway is 800 people, no hospital, road wasn't finished until 1978. Only connection to the outside world was by railroad to Whitehorse, pop 25,000 or fly to Juneau.

Governor Palin repeats this story (with much more flair and panache) in a speech she gives in Calgary, Alberta. The point? Using a personal story to help underscore the importance of the relationship between Canadians and Americans.

Now because there may have been a government sponsored program in place for Yukon residents at the time to cover the cost of their Hospital visits to local hospitals this means exactly what?

That Sarah Palin supports socialized health care? Nonsense.

Because her parents availed of the services of a hospital in Canada to treat their son when Sarah Palin was 5 years old this means that Sarah Palin's present attacks on socialized medicine are hypocritical? Absurd.

That because her brother was properly treated, this means that Sarah Palin's position that Obamacare will lead to government rationing of Healthcare is over the top? Pathetic.

In Newt Gingrich's speech of November 21, 2009, he references certain authorities given under the Healthcare legislation passed by the House to the Secretary of Human Health and Services. We need to dig up the applicable reference in the Senate version of the Health Care legislation.

- Congress has no right to infringe upon our inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness by giving a government bureaucrat the authority to make decisions about our health care.

As Speaker Gingrich suggested, we must be prepared to divide the country on a simple and straightforward question:

Do we as Americans believe in our Declaration of Independence that our creator endowed us with certain inalienable rights, that among those are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among people, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed?

or

Do we believe as put forward by the Democrats under the guise of their secular socialist (aka progressive) agenda that Government can take away these rights and give them to a government bureaucrat to administer for us?

(The political writers among us can probably better frame the question, but IMV that is the essence of the present debate.)

Like Speaker Gingrich, IMHO we can win this debate hands down and in turn vanquish the Democrats and their secular socialist (aka progressive) agenda.

But, we must not be prepared to shy away from this fight. No "baragains" as suggested by the Vichy Republicans.

We must not allow ourselves to be distracted with false charges, such as those being made against Governor Palin this day.

To win this fight we must be absolutely resolute in the defense of our liberties and our founding ideals as a nation, while calling upon our fellow citizens to make a choice.

Do you believe in our founding principles or not? If you do, then as Sarah Palin would say, come join our cause and fight with us to ensure that America remains that shining beacon of light, the greatest nation on earth.

Okay, I am starting to get wound up, as my words get ready to leap off the page, so let me stop there.

Evening!  The left is really grasping at straws on this one.  They are getting more desperate as time goes on, it's fun to watch them get wee wee'd up! 

I went to my Tea Party group meeting tonight.  It went very well, I'm actually helping to get signatures for a woman at my church who is running for state rep in my district.  She is running as an Independent because she ran on the GOP ticket in 2008 and got treated very horribly because of the GOP label.  The GOP has no one opposing the current guy so she will be facing him assuming she gets enough signatures. 

After the meeting I got talking to a woman and told her about my experience Friday night.  She was really excited about it and was happy for me.  Long story short she mentioned she was a farmer, and being the unemployed guy I am boldy asked her if she needed any help during the summer.  She did, I will be helping out on her farm this summer bailing hay, cleaning up after the animals, and other things.  I've always liked farm chores, every summer I head to my Uncle's dairy farm in the Catskills and always enjoy helping out with the farm chores.  I've always loved doing really hard work with my hands.  I'll only be paid 5 bucks an hour, but hey I got to take what I can get huh?

I am utterly amazed and speechless at all this fuss over a throwaway line in a story about childhood injuries. Huffpo nutbots are calling hospitals in Canada to check up on an incident almost 40 years old? People are actually using TV time to discuss whether this is a sign of "inconsistency or hypocrisy"? This is sheer lunacy! Sarah is not just "living in their heads rent free" to quote Rush. She has built a theme park called Sarahland. It's always open and the favorite ride is The GotchaCoaster. It always looks like so much fun at the start from that high perch, but suddenly it starts rolling downhill and then slams on the brakes of reality. Kinda hurts when that happen. Another favorite is a western themed ride called The Last Train to Nowhere. It appeares to be frequented by certain Alaska bloggers and a character known as "Ricky Hollywood" and a redhead who goes by "Skankalicious". A lot of the park-goers hang out at the Hll of Mirrors. It is the one place where they can successfully "see what they want to see". Of course, that just makes it that much harder when they have to leave and go back out into the sunlight of reality. The parks serves only cotton candy and kool-aid as refreshment, but no one seems to mind. The just keep drinking up and hopping right back on the rides. Odd place but the guests seem to love it!

Then, she would go home to her 3 identical baby dolls, but when they skinned their knees, she would not give them any healthcare, because even at that young age, she didn't care about others having health insurance.
She wore a wig of course, threw all valuables into any body of water she came upon, would shop until she dropped, only read picture books, had a club, but refused to allow any of her playmates to call her the leader of the club, and generally was never talked about. At all.

That article was strange. Like the AP reporter wrote the story with his slant, then tossed in a few of Chuck's quotes without using them to contradict his own imagined hypocrisy. Did I read it wrong? Did Chuck say he paid bill out of pocket? The care received was not free. What am I missing here folks?


Also tracking a rumor that her brother in question might not be her brother afterall. My sources are saying there is a good chance that her "brother" is actually  part of a child acting trio of triplets that was purchased by the Heath's in the early 60's just to scam doctors, and hospitals all across North America. Guest, did it ever occur to you that he might had emergency care in Whitehorse and then went for follow up to their own physician in Juneau?  At that age one trip is no different from another.  For example, a friend of a co-worker had a heart situation in Italy, went to the hospital there when she was released she then came back home and had follow-ups with her doctor in the States.  I guess she should have gone back to Italy for her follow-up appointments and that would suit your reasoning.

This a perfect example of how the "Palin is polarazing" and "Palin is divisive" image is projected to general unsuspecting public. They take a normal everyday quote, parse and morph it into something totally different to what was said. What is there to clear the air about?

Governor Palin relates a childhood story about her brother being taken to a hospital in Whitehorse in a speach she gives in Calgary, Alberta.

The point? To show the close relationship between Americans and Canadians.

Two days after she gave the speech, progressive political operatives in the blogosphere use the story told by Governor Palin (even though they can not get their facts straight) to claim that because of what happened when she was a child to someone else in her family means that Governor Palin supports socialized medicine.

How do these operatives work? Make an outrageous claim, stir the pot and then have the story leak over to the liberal media establishment.

AP claims:

Palin's health care history, even when she was a child, is of interest because of her criticism of Obama and other Democrats working on U.S. health care.

Nonsense, but okay ... let's see what is said next:

Palin has been a frequent critic of big government and socialized health care, a seeming contradiction for someone whose family once took advantage of it in Whitehorse.

Palin in August called Obama's health plan "downright evil" in a Facebook posting and said he would create a "death panel" that would deny care to the neediest Americans. Democrats including Obama have dismissed that as a distortion.

After the AP story explains why someone living in Skagway would go to Whitehorse, Yukon for medical care, instead of going to Juneau, Alaska, the whole line of attack comes crashing down with this quote from Chuck Heath:

"We much preferred to use our facilities because my insurance didn't cover anything in Whitehorse. And even though they have socialized medicine, I still had to pay the bill, being an American citizen," Heath said.

Many of us were aware of the "echo chamber" that is being used to mount these type of political attacks. This effort simply crystalizes it.

It starts with bloggers (political operatives) at Huffpo, Gawker and Politoco. They make a totally outrageous claim.

Because of the salacious nature of the attack, the story then moves on to "purported" reporters at MSNBC.

Finally someone at AP picks up the story and tries to spin it further.

But, IMHO, in this case the attack comes crashing down with the quote from Chuck Heath; and ends up being exposed as simply a salacious, over the top attack that is without merit, because as Chuck Heath made crystal clear, "I still had to pay the bill, being an American citizen."

Oh yes, notice this little tidbit at the end of the AP story:

Palin aide Jason Recher did not immediately return an e-mail seeking comment from the former governor.

Well "whisky, tango, foxtrot" to you too AP.

As a former Prime Minister of Canada once famously mouthed in the House of Commons when responding to questioning from the Opposition:

"Fuddle duddle."

P.S. Okay, it is probably a good thing I am not the press advisor to Governor Palin.

That being said, given the relationship between health care and women, why AKReport do you perceive this story would need further response from Sarah Palin?

Yes, I can see a great Facebook post mocking the inanity of certain bloggers who are political operatives, along with certain reporters and perhaps the media.

Also, I can see a Facebook post pivoting off of this attack and calling out the "progressive agenda" for all to see.

But why does she need to "clear the air?"

My guess on the contradiction in stories (Juneau vs. Whitehorse).

A. Sarah was five years old. When I was five, I could have sworn I touched the moon. Turned out it was a dream.

B. It's clear from the AP article that they only went to Whitehorse once or twice for emergencies. Other times they did take the ferry go Juneau.

C. My guess is that Sarah got her medical incidents mixed up.

D. Before she spoke in Wisconsin, she asked her Dad if he knew of any connections to Wisconsin. He gave her a few stories. No doubt she did the same thing here and Chuck told her about the trip to Whitehorse. So this time she wasn't relying on her memory from 40 years ago, but rather her dad's accurate account.

Put her in jail. It's all over.

Should this story have legs (which I don't think it does) the best response would be to use some self-deprecatory humor to mock the media "attacks."

I think I know how to fight all this. I have been praying about it, and are very close to putting it into words. I have hard time reading long post (no disrepect meant) so composing a long post will take me time. What I do know, is that all these rediculous false charges and points of redicule serve a purpose. For one thing, look how much time, effort, and aggrivation it creats. If they are able to cause us, the blogs and the media to pay this much attention to such bizzar non-issues (for the average person that is) than when something that is a genuine embarrasment to Sarah will be so inflated that it could actually hurt her with the public at large.

Like I said, I will pray some more. With the help of God, I will find answeres to fight this evil, it is evil and it must be defeated once and for all.

I believe in polls as a indicator of current strength and a POSSIBLE indication of what MAY have in the future.

Having said that, don't tell me that Obama's failure so far to get Obamacare passed has not been affected by his low standing in the polls (RCP avg. around 48).

And if you are an aspiring dark horse you need the polls to confirm to potential supporters or financial backers that you could over time become a credible candidate. Imagine if Tim Pawlenty were consistently polling at 15% in the polls than the less than 5% he is receiving now.

And finally if you are Sarah Palin, because of the perception by many Republicans and some conservatives that she lacks political LEGITIMACY, it is important for her to remain a major player in the mind of her supporters and to use the polls to rebut the ongoing MSM narrative that she is "unelectable". It is not all that important now that Palin is regarded as #1 or a close #2 but again it is important that she is seen as a MAJOR CONTENDER. And that is what the polls now confirm even if they are often skewed by the sampling of too many Democrats and oversampling liberals/moderates and undersampling conservatives and independent conservatives.

And even for Mitt Romney, the polls are important in that the GOP leadership must be sure that Mitt has the right stuff to go all the way to invest in his candidacy. If he falters, the polls will eventually show that and that could prompt the GOP elites to look elsewhere. 

panchita, what you call "stinkin' polls" is driving Palin's opponents crazy and allowing Palin to receive media coverage that is only reserved for frontrunners. If Palin was polling where Pawlenty is now, even as an attractive personage, she would not be receiving the attention she is now.

2) Obama doesn't have the votes yet to pass Obamacare in the House

3) Kathleen Bigelow, being the first woman to win the Oscar for best director and having her film win as best movie of the year and giving a shoutout twice to the troops in her two acceptances speeches

4) The Iraqi election

5) The healthcare Sarah Palin received as an infant and pre-schooler

Here's what I don't understand.  I say this respectfully.  Don't Sarah's children currently use the Indian Health Services facility in Alaska?  Since Todd is part eskimo, all the kids are eligible for free healthcare.  I have not found any articles with any responses from the govenir. I'm not calling her a hippocrite, but I do wander why it is okay for her childrren to get good, free care and then not want the rest of us to get it the same.  Anyway.

There is no such thing as free health care.  Somebody has to pay for that health care and the last time I checked both Todd and Sarah pay taxes.  And since Sarah is making lots of money now that means she is paying lots of taxes.
