Obama Takes Increased Interest in Palin's Natural Gas Pipeline

Almost one year ago, C4P predicted that the president would eventually attempt to take over, and take credit for, Governor Palin's work to get Alaska a natural gas pipeline (you can read more about AGIA here and here).

Now the Juneau Empire reports:

Senate Majority Leader Johnny Ellis, D-Anchorage, said a top Obama administration official, former Alaskan Pete Rouse, told Alaska legislators in Washington that Obama would be more than just verbally supporting the Alaska natural gas pipeline.

"Mr. Rouse said the president was planning to elevate the Alaska gas line coordinator's office effort into the executive office of the president once Mr. [Larry] Persily is in place [as federal pipeline coordinator] and is official," he said.

[...]

Rep. Berta Gardner, D-Anchorage, said the message she and others received from the Energy Council meetings was that Obama would raise the coordinator's profile.

"They want to boost his position, get him access to an executive committee on energy issues," she said.

The president will be not just coordinating the pipeline project but actively pushing for it, Gardner said.

Let's call Persily the "Gasline Czar."

Some of you may not be familiar with all the names in the quote above. Please allow me to offer some background.

Pete Rouse, described above as a "former Alaskan" and "top Obama administration official" still has close ties to Democrats in Alaska. The Anchorage Daily News profiled Rouse last winter:

Rouse continued to keep many personal ties in Alaska -- along with his voter registration. In last November's presidential race, records show, the man who would co-lead Obama's transition team voted absentee in Juneau.

Rouse declined to discuss his voter registration.

[...]

One of Rouse's best friends in Alaska is state Sen. Kim Elton, D-Juneau. Rouse was the one who recruited Elton, a former journalist, into politics to work for [Lt. Gov. Terry] Miller. Elton said Rouse is always eager for e-mailed photos of Romeo, the black wolf often photographed around Juneau.

Elton said he followed the presidential race through Rouse, backing Obama early on the strength of his friend's endorsement. But he told Rouse he couldn't talk about Palin once she was named to the Republican ticket. As chairman of the Legislative Council, Elton played a central role in the Legislature's "Troopergate" investigation of the governor, which Republicans complained was being run by Obama supporters.

"It was awkward, because I usually love to talk about things like that," Elton said.

When Elton and his wife traveled east for the inauguration, they stayed with Rouse. Now Elton is under consideration for a high-level appointment as a special assistant on Alaska issues in the Interior Secretary's office.

After playing his role in ginning up the non-scandal the media called "Troopergate," Elton did indeed get his reward with that cushy job in Washington.

Rouse also met with Democrat Alaska legislators when they visited Washington last year. Rep. Les Gara got a bit overexcited.

Larry Persily, Obama's soon-to-be Gasline Czar, briefly worked in the Palin administration's legislative liaison office in Washington, D.C.:

After losing his Washington gig, Persily seems to have gone on an anti-Palin tear - especially after Palin was nominated for VP. Here he is in Bloomberg on August 31st, saying she's not qualified. He appears in a tinfoil-hat hit piece in the Guardian in October. He even wrote for the Huffington Post, and after the election he appeared on Alaskan Public Radio to slam Palin and spin the election results against her.

His most recent national media appearance was in this week's issue of People magazine, where he was quoted as saying "Palin is like Evita Peron."

In addition to making an ass out of himself to anyone with a microphone, Persily, at the time a staffer for Rep. Mike Hawker (RINO - Anchorage), spent much of the 2009 legislative session obstructing the governor's agenda.

Persily was "tasked by House Finance Chairman Mike Hawker to coordinate the House's efforts to stay on top of the stimulus program." He subsequently spent a lot of time asserting that the money from President Obama's "stimulus" had no strings attached. The media reported an almost constant barrage of articles with Persily bloviating that there were no strings attached to the stimulus' weatherization program, which might best be described as a colossal failure. Rich Lowry recently explained one aspect of that:

Prior to the stimulus, weatherization funds were not subject to the Davis-Bacon Act, a union-friendly law that mandates government pay contractors the "prevailing wage." Slavishly committed to the unions, Democrats made Davis-Bacon apply to the new weatherization funds, and the Department of Energy spent the past year trying to determine the prevailing wage in thousands of counties. At least the program kept someone busy.

After spending months attacking Palin and obstructing her legislative agenda, Persily got called up to the big leagues. Just like Kim Elton. Funny how that worked out.

Now the president's looking to increase the power of Persily's position.

The Empire reports that Alaska's legislators are excited that they have Persily in Obama's administration:

After returning from Washington, Ellis told colleagues on the Senate floor Monday that Persily was likely to win confirmation and be well-placed to give Alaska's views on the gas pipeline.

"I guess the president is quite impressed with Larry Persily," he said.

Uh-huh.

The president nationalized the auto industry, supported the financial bailouts and is currently attempting to nationalize health care, over the strong objections of the American people. Call me cynical, but I'm not convinced that he's going to support AGIA's free market principles.

AGIA's success thus far is because it has been rooted in free market principles. Something that has apparently frustrated Obama and the junior Senator from Alaska, Mark Begich (D). Governor Palin responded at the time:

And then we heard just a few days ago, someone says that the White House may want federal control over Alaska’s proposed natural gas pipeline. Can you imagine turning over a free market project to big government controlled by Washington? That’s not a good option.

She's made that point more than once.

Last year, Governor Palin said of the "stimulus":

Will we chart our own course, or will Washington (D.C.) engineer it for us?

It's not a surprise that Obama might want to take credit for Palin's gas pipeline. After all, as Palin has pointed out over and over, America needs a source of clean, reliable energy that comes from domestic sources, thereby increasing our national security. But AGIA needs the free market to work. Much as he may wish to claim credit, Alaska's gasline should not become an Obama public works project.

I have no doubt at all that Obama will try to take credit for the project and IF that does not work out, he will try to kill it. We must be on watch for this.

Mountain Mama,  March 9, 2010 11:10 PM

Looks like Obama has been forced, with his tanking polls, to follow Bill Clinton's MoJo:  always co-opt (then ruin via restrictions) the oppositions ideas and agenda.

OOPS!  "The opposition's ideas and agenda."

we will never see the nuclear plants he promised, or the pipeline. he will get the money and funnel it to the democratic party. breaks my heart to have the president of our great country flat out lying to the american people.

As for me? I have a message for the president: AGIA is Governor Palin’s baby, if you’re only half as smart as your loyal followers make you out to be, you’ll know that no one messes with Governor Palin’s kids and gets away with it. No one, not even you Mr. President.

Whitney the Pipsqueak,  March 9, 2010 11:51 PM

Wow, Mel. Excellent investigative reporting. You should teach a class for the AP "reporters".

I truly hope that the federal government doesn't take over this. Mel stated that the beauty of this project is the fact that is built on free market principles. Sarah has always touted that this is the largest private sector infrastructure project ever in North America.

However, Sarah cares enough about Alaska and America that she doesn't care who gets the credit. In fact, I vaguely remember a press conference when Sarah was governor in which she said he could take credit for it as long as it gets done. She does really deserve appropriate credit for this though.

johnmd,  March 9, 2010 11:53 PM

YOUR missing the point here. He who controls the pipeline controls the flow and the price. Obama just lent his buddy soros 10 billion of our money for his oil and gas company. With government control it will won't be finished in 50 years plus it will cost 400 billion instead of 40 billion.  Can you guess what the cost of the gas will be from it. Who wins ? Soros and Obamas arab buddies thats who. Dont forget about Obamas union buddies that will have  to be paid hazzard pay because it will be cold work. Damn is it November 2012 yet?

Not sure if Palin heard this or is even aware of it...
BAM interviewed Bill Walker the other day...they love him...
He is running for Gov.  and they really love him...
Anyway..he said ...if elected...the first thing he would do is ditch AGIA....

I think when the pipeline is providing the energy, Gov. Palin will always get a lot of credit for it's vision... no matter what.  Obama will of course try to take some credit.  Sarah's finger prints is all over the pipeline so to speak.  And remember she will be making a lot of "noise" about it too.  People can see through all the spin Obama may try to use... especially the Alaskans.  I think too that if Obama gets in the mix, it will increase the visibility of Sarah.  It will be a win for Sarah.  She talked about it a lot in "Going Rogue".

I will not be surprised if Obama tries to reach out to Gov. Palin to seem bipartisan on the gas pipeline as he tries to move to the center.  Remember Obama is a very "smart" politician.  My desire is... let it boom on the free market principles.  Keep the govt. out.

<span>Obama Takes Increased Interest in Palin's Natural Gas Pipeline</span>
I feel a bit uneasy with the heading. Palin's pipeline. The heading is a bit too .... awkward. Anyway this is just another example that despite what anyone tells you Obama is never going to change his ways as regard his big government agenda. Why is he trying to involve the federal government here. Aren't his attempts to regulate and control the auto, health insurance, energy, banking & finance, fishing industries e.t.c keeping him already occupied.

Nancy,  March 10, 2010 12:29 AM

It was originally Scott Heyward's idea, but after Murkowski's pipeline fell through. she in conjunction with the DNR team headed by Irwin and Rutherford, spearheaded the negotiations. More than a few people that I know were really impressed with how those turned out. Now Parnell is in the lead now, so I don't think to worry, but Walker, does he remember the Exxon Valdez anymore

NYPalinPower,  March 10, 2010 12:46 AM

Agreed, to bring a Washington run public works project to Sarah's homestate is surely hitting beneath the belt to intentionally get back at Sarah.   I don't think Hollywood could have written a better script with all these villians.  I think we need to send lots of prayers Sarah's way regarding this.  This must hurt her badly.  She needs to stay strong and fight.  She's winning the battle and that's why things are getting rough right now.  But I have faith that it will all unfold as it should and in the end Sarah will be victorious.  Let's not lose our momentum over this.  We'll all be there for Sarah and she knows this.  Let us carry on.

Whitney the Pipsqueak,  March 10, 2010 12:51 AM

I think Alaska may have the highest proportion of "Obama administration officials"/population of the 57 states.

Just-Sayin,  March 10, 2010 12:54 AM

Good research but u lost me a bit with the headline

It's not "palins pipeline" and she would never want to see it described that way.

AKReport,  March 10, 2010 1:10 AM

3 things

1. Happy obama wants to get the pipline done as long as it's free market.

2. Reagan always said "I don't care who gets credit as long as it gets done" Palin has repeated this line. People of Alaska will always know who started AGIA, so having obama support it helps her.

3. Sean Parnell should keep a steel spine and not cave to the obama thugs.

Whitney the Pipsqueak,  March 10, 2010 1:11 AM

Gary Jackson, whom C4P has featured from time to time, has a different take. He think that rather than take credit for the gasline, Obama may be trying to destroy it. I think someone may have posted this in the open thread earlier tonight:

"<span>On this media day, Giannoulias, the Illinois state treasurer and current Democratic nominee for U.S. Senatein November, had a job to do:</span>
<span>
Put to rest nagging questions about the bank and loans he approved for some earthy types, including Michael "Jaws" Giorango, the convicted Outfit bookie and protector of a national prostitution circuit.

He did address the issues. But he didn't exactly put them to rest. He failed.

If anything, he may have made things worse by offering answers that only supporters would characterize, optimistically, as "evolving."

So reporters will keep pecking, as they should, and so will his opponent, Republican Mark Kirk. And if Broadway Bank fails as even Giannoulias now expects, his could be a political death by a thousand pecks."</span>

A,  March 10, 2010 1:28 AM

...
<span>With the Tribune's editorial board, Giannoulias was asked how his relationship with Giorango developed, and at what point did he learn that Giorango, whom he described as a "colorful character," had a criminal background.

"I learned of it primarily when I was running for the office of state treasurer (in 2006)," Giannoulias said. "I mean, I don't remember the exact date, whether it was during the primary or during the general. I think it was during the primary."

He was promptly reminded that on April 27, 2006, during his campaign for treasurer, he told Tribune reporters that he had discussed Giorango's criminal past with him. The discussion took place as Giannoulias worked on millions of dollars' worth of bank loans for Giorango. It was years before Giannoulias' entry into politics.

So was that the great gotcha moment?

Not exactly. But it's the kind of answer that triggers the hunting instinct in opposition researchers and investigative reporters.

"Can I look back and make sure I don't say anything inconsistent?" Giannoulias asked, somewhat awkwardly. "This was eight years ago. Seven or eight years ago. As I mentioned, if we knew everything about this individual's past, we wouldn't have given those loans."</span>

A,  March 10, 2010 1:30 AM

...<span>A silky parser of words may have had an easier time, perhaps an artist in the lawyerly game of negative implication — when what's not said is more important than what is said.</span>
<span>
If such a candidate could make reporters feel tingles running up their legs, if he could offer himself up as an empty vessel for their guilt and their hopes, he might get away with it.

But that guy is in the White House now.

Giannoulias played basketball with him, but Alexi is not that guy.

Out on Michigan Avenue, we were standing in the place where I'd stood with that other guy, centuries ago now.

President Barack Obama — then Sen. Obama — had gone through a grilling over his friendship with Tony Rezko, the convicted political influence peddler and Obama real estate fairy.

But the Rezko issue was marginalized as mere partisan Republican harping. And in local and national media accounts, Obama was portrayed as Rezko's victim.

The implication was that the spidery Rezko stalked the idealistic and naive young Obama and almost dragged him down, by buying that strip of land in the Kenwood neighborhood, so Obama could afford that dream house.

That's not reality. But politics isn't about reality as much as it is about establishing a compelling narrative. And the media so loved Obama's creation myth.

By contrast, the narrative that Giannoulias spun in the 2006 campaign was that he was an experienced banker, a senior loan officer qualified to be treasurer.

And now it's difficult to claim he didn't know about customer relations at the family bank, or much at all about pimps named "Jaws."

"It's tough to ask my father questions," Giannoulias said to the editorial board about his late father.

"You're saying that he (Giorango) is a family friend, and that's not fair. You're saying someone's a family friend without knowing any of the relationship. I don't understand how you can do that."</span>

You know what's ironic? (kind of)

Now that Palin's out of the running, Bob and Mark are free to support the pipeline project that they think will work, whereas otherwise they would probably stick by Palin.

An old podcast of the BAM show when Sarah first got in there had them saying that they loved her to death, but that even she wouldn't get the pipeline. They think it's going to happen when Bob and Mark are governor... :)

OnePurpleKrayon,  March 10, 2010 2:02 AM

I think Sarah would welcome the Obama Administration's support on the pipeline as long as it stays in the free market.  Sarah's not one to want to claim credit all on her own. As long as the job is done, she doesn't care who gets the credit. Everyone will know that it was the Palin Administration that spearheaded it all.  Obama will of course wants to steal the credit to make himself look like a hero.  He has such a big ego.

Arctos,  March 10, 2010 3:38 AM

I've enjoyed this site because, well, it's a very silly place. You publish a lot of amusing tripe here, but this post is Class A Crap. Calling someone who is well respected among Alaska's leaders on both sides of the aisle and who is one of the most knowledgeable Alaskans on oil and gas issues a "gasline Czar" is about as petty and ignorant as it gets.

Maybe Larry Persily--who has worked on the state's revenue and energy issues since 1999 for three different governors, R and D--has some firsthand experience of Palin's abilities and knowledge that you folks don't have? His experience on state issues is considerably wider and deeper than hers or almost anybody's by any rational measure. He has demonstrated his ability to work on issues no matter what party is in power.

Perhaps if Mrs. Palin hadn't abandoned her job so abruptly, she could reap the glory or the catastrophe of AGIA--whichever it turns out to be--and you wouldn't have to fret over something as dopey as who gets the credit. This isn't "her" pipeline project anymore. She's not an elected official of anything. She invested "our" money and then blew off the state. You folks do realize that although she took credit for getting the pipeline built in her RNC speech, little has happened aside from Alaska giving TransCanada a license and shelling out a half-billion dollars to a foreign company no matter what they do or don't do, right? (Nice free market if you can get it.)

I understand that your mission is to unconditionally love and support Mrs. Palin no matter what the facts might suggest. I applaud your bottomless devotion. Somebody has to like her, and it might as well be you.  But in this ridiculous, junior-high level attack, you expose massive ignorance about Alaskan issues and Alaskans. It's offensive.

And please save the sanctimonious and delusional speeches about how she was forced out by those nasty anklebiters under the direction of Axelrod and Soros. Very few people in Alaska are buying it. She quit. (And newsflash: She gave her lawn speech using a teleprompter. Guess it was too much to write on her hand.)

I could not care less if she wanted to get rich, but her assertion that she did it for us is simply ridiculous. And what, exactly and specifically, has she done for Alaska since she quit? Shopping a TV show disguised as a tourism ad doesn't count. If she has the nerve to call this project "Palin's Alaska," there will be an uprising in this state by anyone who knew or voted for Jay Hammond, who was the kind of governor she could never hope to become.

One reason I look at this site is to see what you're not writing about (Alaska Fund Trust ethics complaint, anybody? Mat Maid debacle?). Somehow your bloggers have overlooked the poll of Alaskans that recently appeared in USA Today.  Of the 53 percent of Alaskans who think she has a political future, only 17 percent think she should run for president. Considering she won only 48 percent of the gubernatorial vote in the first place, she's hardly made great strides in her reputation here.

Yes, she was the most popular governor in the universe at one point. Guess what? Sean Parnell had an approval rating of 81 percent in February, too, and somehow he did it without telling anyone about his children or wearing high heels.

Maybe, just maybe, Alaskans understand some things about Palin that escape her supporters because we've seen her in action firsthand. Go ahead and adore her, but please stop insulting us.

Bollocks. Sarah trusted Sean Parnell very much. It's why he's Governor.

Uffda,  March 10, 2010 3:59 AM

I'm going to take a wild guess and say you linked a Palin-hating blog. Here goes....

Uffda,  March 10, 2010 4:00 AM

Ah, never mind. I was pleasantly surprised.

Uffda,  March 10, 2010 4:03 AM

I see that you made some comments on older posts. The reason no one replied to you is that we jump from thread to thread pretty quickly. And we never go back to the day before. So if you leave a comment on yesterday's post, no one will see it.

Uffda,  March 10, 2010 4:05 AM

(sigh) For an intelligent troll like yourself, it seems to completely escape you that a project like this takes time. The open season isn't even here yet. I don't see the Denali line breaking ground either. Patience.

Hey Arctos...or whatever...your name....sounds like an antacid....TUMS anyone?

At least it knows how to spell. That's an improvement.

Uffda,  March 10, 2010 4:30 AM

The pettiness of the Alaska legislature in the wake of the election continues to bug me. I love how they held a press conference this time last year to protest Palin leaving the state for 24 hours. 24 hours they weren't doing anything anyway. This year. a bunch of them are flying off to D.C. and shutting the session down for a week to do it. Cue outrage, right? (crickets)

Or not.

CruelaDev,  March 10, 2010 4:38 AM

Yeah...21 +/- head to DC to play for said "Energy Conference"...Yeah Right...LMAO!
Several of them can't even spell energy....

Hey Mr/Ms Antacid....how do you feel about paying for the AK Legislators....to go play in DC....all under the false pretense of Energy....

REALLY....????

And you come up with poll numbers about what AK thinks of Palin running for President...by USA Today???

MY GOD ....YANK THE HEAD OUT NOW!!!! Brain dies without Oxygen!

Uffda,  March 10, 2010 4:49 AM

I shall savor the trouncing of Ramras by Campbell. I think I shall stock up on popcorn.

Pass the Popcorn my friend...Extra Butter!

Uffda,  March 10, 2010 4:57 AM

I will agree with the troll on two points:

1. I am actually waiting to see what will happen with this now that the President says he's taken an interest in it. Larry is certainly no friend of the governor, but if they're sincere I say good on them. It's just hard to believe Larry's really going to try and help get the pipeline since he's been an ardent critic of AGIA. AGIA can work, but there's still a long way to go and any number of things could go right or wrong. I'm going to withhold judgement until later. Governor Palin was hoping that Obama would make the pipeline a priority. I almost expect her to praise this move.

2. AGIA is Palin's baby, but I don't think she would want her name on the pipeline. She's not that egotistical. She's a team player. And she has said in the past that she doesn't care if the Obama administration gets the credit, she just wants the project to happen because she thinks it's good for Alaska. That's all that matters.

CruelaDev,  March 10, 2010 5:03 AM

I agree...Uffda..
BUT...
Bo Bo the CLOWN does nothing without a motive for himself...
That old saying...comes to mind..."Follow the Money"....
It may not involve money so to speak...but that old saying is ringing like bells in my head!

Uffda,  March 10, 2010 5:09 AM

My prediction for a Facebook post (if there is one)

1. She will praise the Obama administration for making the pipeline a priority.

2. She will include a warning against the federal government taking the project over and will instead insist that the government play a proper role.

CruelaDev,  March 10, 2010 5:13 AM

"Proper Role"...LOL???

What....Like ...BUTT OUT!!!!  That would be Awesome!

CruelaDev,  March 10, 2010 5:15 AM

Okay...Nite Uffda...I am going to try to once again...go to bed...
This should be fun!
Take Care!

Good night. Bob and Mark!

(I've decided that since they say "Palin!" I'll say "Bob and Mark!")

Uffda,  March 10, 2010 5:48 AM

Two more points (because I have nothing better to do right now) :

1. AGIA was Palin's bill. It will always be Palin's project, despite any changes. Romney isn't Governor of Massachusetts anymore either. It's still called Romneycare.

2. She told everyone exactly why she was resigning and she told the truth. Whether you believe it or not is up to you. The irony is that if she lied you'd probably believe her.

John 8 - "Because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not."

(cue the "Ah! She thinks Palin's God" idiots)

Mel- Me thinks you touched a nerve with your excellent post!  You've brought out that rare Alaskan species: The "I speak for all Alaskans" troll. The Anchorage Daily News website used to be filled with such critters.

I wouldn't worry about Obama doing anything to move Sarah's pipeline forward. He has spent almost half of his pathetic term as president trying to ruin our free market healthcare system. He's not even a good insurance salesman. Hugo Chavez says "he's a bad socialist".

A am so proud to be an American!

We all move to Canada for that wonderful free health care.

CharterOakie,  March 10, 2010 10:09 AM

I'm late to this party, but those were exactly my thoughts too, Whit.  So I'll record that here, with thanks to Mel for such an excellent post.

gardunne63,  March 10, 2010 10:24 AM

One very large benefit of Sarah leaving Juneau is that we Lower 48'ers NEVER ever have to read the ADN again!   What a dish rag it is.

gardunne63,  March 10, 2010 10:26 AM

If The Won messes with Cuda's pipeline, he will have invited her to the big dance.

JohnDoeAt30Below,  March 10, 2010 11:48 AM

Arctos is partially correct - which is always dangerous. Palin didn't "shell out half a billion dollars" to a Canadian company. At the last accounting, TransCanada had been paid a little over $5 million and the work they have done is groundwork that can and will be used by any project.

The Dems are setting this up to lose-lose: If AGIA doesn't result in a gas line being built by the 4th of July, it will be a tremendous failure for Palin. If a gas line gets built, it will be 'we had to come in and take over this project for the good of the country. Palin's plan was a disaster. Thank god for us.'

Folks like Arctos always forget that AGIA passed the Alaska Legislature by a combined vote of 59-1.

JohnDoeAt30Below,  March 10, 2010 11:56 AM

And Arctos includes this zinger:

anyone who knew or voted for Jay Hammond, who was the kind of governor she could never hope to become

Ask Alaskans who remember Hammond how much state money he blew on the Pt. McKenzie Dairy debacle. Or the Delta barely project. How much money was poured down the rathole of the rail spurs and gleaming grain cars that rusted away. The coal to Korea fiasco. The tens of billions wasted and still being spent as a result of school construction under the Molly Hootch settlement. Best of all, get them to talk about how Hammond stole someone else's idea for the Permanent Fuund and then had to change, at a monstrous cost, once it went to court.

Hammond was a socialist fraud with a Republican label.

Love That Lady,  March 10, 2010 12:28 PM

Let's all send Gov. Parnell a message.
Rename the Pipeline to include PALIN.  I like your idea "Great American Palin Pipeline" GAPP.

Anonymous,  March 10, 2010 12:30 PM

That guy from Chicago is trying to steal one of Sarah's greatest accomplishments as Governor.  What an elitist loon!

eclecticak,  March 10, 2010 4:07 PM

AH, Jay.....

He was pretty popular though 'cause he was a bush pilot, guide and hunter. In Alaska we seem to have alternated between 'Everymans' and crooks for Governors. A microcosm of national politics?
