The Size of Government: Palin and Sweden Vs. Obama

One of the European social democracies the Left has consistently wanted the United States to emulate is Sweden. Sweden, with their cradle to grave welfare state, is the real shining city on a hill to which we should aspire claim liberals. Ironically, however, Sweden has recently been moving away from this failed statist model as their unsustainable government spending and the punishing tax rates which accompany it have resulted in a lagging standard of living relative to other countries. The Center for Freedom and Prosperity, to whom I have referred before, has produced another video in their Economics 101 series, which explores what has recently been taking place in Sweden:

There is a lot of information is this short video. I want to focus only on the overall theme of the proper size and scope of government. When Sweden had a relatively small government and larger private sector, the country prospered. When they began travelling down the road to socialism, their prosperity waned. Most recently, as they have moved to reduce the size and role of government, prosperity is again on the increase. This is not by accident.

There has been much economic research in this area and the results have been notably consistent. The best way to assess the size of government is to measure total government spending relative to Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The greater the ratio of government spending to GDP, the larger and more intrusive the government. The bottom line is that an economy's ability to grow is inversely related to the amount of government spending. Profligate government spending results in lower economic growth, higher unemployment, and lower living standards. To be sure, a small amount of government is necessary to guarantee private property rights and enforce contracts, but beyond that it becomes problematic. For more on this, Dan Mitchell at the Heritage Foundation has an article here.

Freedom, economic as well as political, is the most important factor in prosperity. But freedom can be messy; not all people are equal and equality of outcome is not possible or even desirable. One of the temptations of socialism is the idea, promoted by liberals, that average people aren't smart enough to handle freedom; that they are not knowledgeable enough to know what is in their own self interest and therefore, will make poor choices. This, liberals say, can be rectified if free people are willing to give up some of their liberty in exchange for security which, of course, can only be provided by big government. But, as history has consistently shown, those who give up freedom for security end up with neither.

Those like Obama, who believe the opposite, ignore history as well as human nature. Free markets, which consist of millions of people continuously making decisions in their own self-interest, result in the greatest prosperity for all. This is why countries with limited government are the most prosperous. Governor Palin, who has consistently and repeatedly advocated smaller government, understands this. As governor of Alaska, she is one of the few political leaders in our lifetime who actually reduced the amount of government spending, as opposed to simply reducing the rate of growth in spending which, incidentally, is what Washington politicians consider "spending cuts".

Under Governor Palin's fiscally responsible stewardship, Alaska weathered the recent recession with relatively few problems. However, such has not been the case in states burdened with a large state government. California, with their enormous state government, is effectively bankrupt. New York is not far behind. Obama, with his multiple trillions in new government spending, clearly prefers the failed socialist model to Governor Palin's commonsense small government approach.

Sweden, though they still have much work to do, is moving toward free markets and away from the big government model which has stifled economic growth in their country for the past two generations. Ironically the United States, under Obama's regime, is moving away from free markets and toward socialism. The fact that Governor Palin, a staunch free market / limited government advocate, has policy positions more closely aligned with present day Sweden than those of President Obama is one indication of his appalling (if not surprising) lack of economic literacy.

Update: Obama's unprecedented deficit spending has resulted in the real possibility that the U.S. could soon lose their AAA credit rating. More from Matthew Brown at Bloomberg here.

Thanks C4P. I really like this group's videos and isn't it ironic that the the socialists in Sweden are moving away from the system Obama is trying to ram down our throats. WAKE UP AMERICA before it is too late.

Thanks for the article. I actually studied Sweden's economic structure and health care system in college. Our teacher was gently trying to get us to think that this was the way US had to go in the future. Suffice it to say I didn't agree. Neither does Sweden apparently.

LMAO!

Thanks Doug. Helpful post.

The issues you raise go to the fundamental question of whether our political leaders (R/D) have the consent of the governed and that our political elites are repudiating the need for self-governance:

By there actions, are our political elites (R/D) repudiating that which has made America great, our belief in self-governance?

As to the warning shot from Moody's, which now joins Fitch and Standard & Poor in underscoring that America's public finances at the Federal Government level are not sustainable, three observations:

- The financial markets are taking a head in the sand approach to the looming dollar and debt crisis;

- The fiscal and social policies which started under the Bush administration and have been accelerated under the Obama administration are aggravating the problems that the American economy presently faces; and,

- Unless there is a dramatic change in course, the situation will not end well.

Sweden got all wee-wee'd up!  LOL!

It's good to see Sweden turning a corner -- but so sad to think of all the lost prosperity for their nation over the years of welfare state dunderkopfism.  May we learn from others' mistakes.  It's not too late . . .

Obama really must owe his "backers" alot, why would he expend this much time, our taxpayer dollars, ads, speeches on getting healthcare passed.

HAS ANYONE LOOKED AT THE PRICE OF GAS LATELY??

Sarah 2012!

I am forty-one years old, and I have spent most of life thinking that I am not smart enough to understand politics/economy/world affairs.

It's so easy to just listen to politicians roll numbers, facts and figures off their tongues...after awhile I tune them out and just say to myself, "Well, they sound like they know what they're talking about...they got elected for a reason...so they must be smart...and I'm just too dumb to understand the complexities of it all."

Over the past year, I have realized that most of these politicians are bloomin' idiots, who are making all of this stuff up as they go along.

Truly...they really are just making this stuff up.   If they need a number to back up their cost estimates...by golly, they just invent a number right then and there, while Rachel Maddow gleams back at them.

Utter, unbelievable hogwash.

And to think I was naive to believe these people really had some vast reservoir of knowledge that little ol' middle class, suburban housewife "me" would never be able to comprehend.

I have no electric power since Saturday afternoon because of the storm.  It is not expected to come back on until Wednesday.  I was totally bored.  Didn't know what was happening.  I have spent the last 2 nights reading Karl Rove's book under candle light.  He has had a very interesting life.

Today, I am at the library on their computers just so I can see what was happening.  I just finished catching up at c4p.  Wow alot has happened.

I got a tweet on my phone about the Gov. Palin's facebook posting and finally got to read it.  Wow.  Very powerful.  Hope Gov. Palin goes on TV this week and sends another powerful message.  Oh, I just remembered, I don't have electricity, so I won't be able to see it.  I will be reading under candle light again.....

Socialists sure are ideologues. Regardless of history and reality, they try to enforce their utopia on everyone. People like Obama think, "this time it'll be perfect, this time we'll get it right."

In my opinion, socialists don't respect the people and their individual/unique nature. For as long as they pursue their paradise on Earth, certain people will always have to suffer "for the greater good."

I love reading under candlelight! :)

Except for my wet basement, which needs electricity so the sump pump can keep the water out, I don't mind power outages. I have a woodstove to keep warm. It's a big all-nighter so I can even cook on its surface. :)

Enjoy your reading!

But wait, do you support Palin? You can't read, can you? ;)

karenfromny,  March 15, 2010 2:19 PM

Oh well, my 2 hour time limit is up at the library.  Will return either later or tomorrow.  No electric, so I can't cook.  Thank goodness...  Not to cold out there, so we are surviving without heat.

Will read again tonight under candlelight.  I am getting used to it.  Hurts the eyes after a few hours.

Great job Doug. I love the video too, especially the peeing in your pants analogy, LOL, it really fit.

I'm with you SusanW, I used to think I just wouldn't be able to understand, but economics and government really is not all that complicated, and once you have some of the basics figured out you do realize that so many politicians are just blabbing about nothingness just to push their own agenda. Most are masterful at making simple things harder than they need to be.

Bestbud,  March 15, 2010 3:39 PM

Why is it Gov palin always seems to be Right?  Could it be as simple as because she lives her life making a difference in the lives of people and follows, to the letter, the Golden Rule... treat others as you would like to be treated. In doing so people come first, whether it's the roll of government in their lives or just being compassionate as a good neighbor and friend.

"70 years on the road to... nowhere"

The header is a quote I heard on TV from an elderly man, maybe in his 70s or 80s, after the USSR collapsed in the 1980s.

The Swedish model is very appealing isn't it? Until the money runs out.

Remember the tearing down of the Berlin Wall, Gorbachev scared witless and the collapse of the Soviet experiement with the "new human," the collectivist "commune" and the workers party solution to the so-called selfish individualist community?

Apparently Pres. Obama doesn't know USSR or Swedish history, has forgotton USSR or Swedish history, or doesn't care about USSR or Swedish history, because if the Obama administration is successful in "... fundamentally transforming the United States of America" a la the failed Swedish model of economics and the Soviet "commune" model of single payer EVERYTHING, America is facing its own "70 years on the way to nowhere."
