Washington Post: Tenuous Links To Smear The Palins (Update)

The citizens of the progressive twin cities of Tenuous Links/To Smear Palin have been all a flutter this week about what they see as the hypocrisy of the Governor Palin’s opposition to socialized health care, knowing full well that more than 40 years ago her sister and brother were treated at a Canadian hospital in the Yukon Territory, at a time well before nationalised medicare existed there. (see here)

Given that their raison d’être is the unsubstantiated, it matters nought to the citizens of Tenuous Links/To Smear Palin that the future Vice Presidential candidate was only around 5 years of age at the time and was not herself the recipient of medical attention; that the decision to take their children to a foreign hospital was made by the then Sarah Heath’s parents; that the said hospital wasn’t at the time part of a national Canadian medicare programme; or that the health care received was paid for.

For those willing to entertain the absurdity, perhaps most puzzling in this sorry matter of the deliberate inflating of the ludicrously tenuous is the unusual failure of the citizens of Tenuous Links/To Smear Palin to fully exploit its potential by making further equally tenuous links.

For example, one might reasonably have expected the citizens of the twin cities to have remembered that in an interview conducted by Harry Smith of CBS on 9/29/08, Chuck Heath said this of the young Sarah,

“I could bend my other kids and have them do things and if she knew she was right I had a hard time convincing her there was another way of doing it... but she was usually always right and could justify what she wanted to do... very strong willed...”

Strong willed? A hard time convincing her if she knew she was right?

Chuck Heath, “You Lie!” cry the conspiratorial.

Isn’t it abundantly clear to the Palin Deranged that 40 years ago the 5 year old Sarah Heath failed utterly and abysmally to convince her father that he should not take her brother with the scalded foot to a hospital in a foreign territory, just in case years later that territory might join a nationalised health care system?

Many believe that this woman has pretensions to become President, but in the light of this evidence how can that be a serious consideration, Mr Heath?

Who in his right mind can trust that this woman will be capable of standing up for their nation against the intransigence of the Iranians or the North Koreans when at age five she failed singularly to persuade her adult father not to take his injured child to a hospital in foreign territory which years later did join a national medicare programme.

In fact, for all we know the five year old Sarah Heath didn’t even try to dissuade her father.

Well, it seems the notion that anti-Palin sentiments, however tenuous, are there to be exploited is a subject on which Washington Post web politics editor Garance Franke-Ruta has also been ruminating.

Surprisingly, Ms Franke-Ruta has seen fit (see here) to repeat the content of an article which originated at the notorious European blogsite Palingates on 3/3/10 - whose malicious authors attempted to make a link between Mr Palin’s Iron Dog sponsorship and the dictator Hugo Chavez - and in which Governor Palin was accused of “palling around with Communists”.

“That means in effect that Todd Palin is being sponsored by Hugo Chavez!”

Garance Franke-Ruta, how is it that as a web politics editor you don’t appear to know more about the bloggers at Palingates ? (see here)

They have convinced themselves that Governor Palin is not the mother of her fifth child. They promote the belief that Mrs Palin’s husband is not the father of the first born Palin child, and they seek at every opportunity to advocate conspiracies which aim to besmirch and destabilise the Palin family. They tell their readers that working on such conspiracies excites and inspires them as bloggers, and they plead with their readers for support in their conspiracy building and cyber bullying.

They do all of that from the relative safety of their homes in France and elsewhere in Europe, Ms Franke-Ruta. They are not Alaska bloggers. They are not Americans.

As indicated by the acrimony between Palingates and the Alaska Bloggers which emerged last weekend, even amongst the liberal progressive bloggers of Alaska (who are themselves persistent Palin critics), Palingates is an embarrassment, a pariah blog despised for the nature of its content and its irrational pursuit-to-destruction of a family of people living thousands of miles away, in a foreign country.

Perhaps, Ms Franke-Ruta, you’d consider the possibility that the link you made today to a European website site regarded commonly as a “cyber sewer” was a mistake?

I hope so, because it was the sort of tenuous link which no national media outlet can afford to encourage.

Update: Mystik Lubricants was the official lubricant sponsor of the entire Iron Dog event for the second year in a row. Mystik Lubricants was also the "presenting sponsor of the 2009 HYDRO-TURF APBA Watercross Nationals in Nashville, Tennessee" last September.

So in order for the argument to work, you'd have to claim that the entire Iron Dog for the last two years and Watercross Nationals was conducted at the behest of Hugo Chavez.

You mean she didn't hold her breath until her Daddy finally relented and took Chuck Jr. to an American hospital?
She is weak.

CBS has just picked up on the story
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20000248-503544.html

Furthermore CBS links to the WaPo article and while both link to the Video COmmercial that the Governor made, the Washington Post links to PalinTV and CBS links to Palingates channel. In other words CBS is trying to hide under the cover of the Washington Post but fialed to relize the stupidity by linking to Palingates you tube channel

wisetrog,  March 10, 2010 5:49 PM

CBS has done this before. Linked to palingates.

Sheya,  March 10, 2010 5:53 PM

Yeh last time it was a direct link... this time its in a twisted little way hoping no one will figure it out

wisetrog,  March 10, 2010 5:54 PM

Now Canada Free Press normally a reliably pro-American, pro-right newspaper has done a  hit job on Sarah. It repeats the same spiel. She is a Dan Quayle, she's the only one Obama gonna beat in 2012 etc etc. Apparently, the taking off point for this travesty is her, you guessed it, Canadian healthcare quip. No kidding. By this time, it's becoming clear that somebody on the Right is pushing this darn thing and pushing it hard. MSM seems to have realized this is mad but the Right-o-sphere keeps on and on.

sccatina,  March 10, 2010 5:55 PM

Why dont we flood CBS and the Washington Post on why they dont try to embarassed John Conyers on his wife going to prison? Can you imagine if that was Todd Palin or one of the Palin family ? We need to fight fire with fire because this will continue they are trying to destroy her they want people to hate her and call her stupid that is their mission and if we dont stand with Sarah she will be destroy.

Sheya,  March 10, 2010 5:57 PM

CORRECTION: Washington embeded from PalinTV channel while CBS linkes to Palingates cahnnel directly.

If CBS claims the WasPo as their source why not embed or link from the video the WashPo has up why go out of your way to have a hidden link to Palingates?

What a stupid question.

GAHanson,  March 10, 2010 5:59 PM

My bet is that its the Bushies.  They are PO'd big time that Perry/Palin destroyed the Hutchison/Bush team.  The Romney bunch is also pushing it, because he did so lousy in his Chris Wallace interview where he couldn't come up with any differences between 0bamaCare and RomneyCare.  Palin and her mysterious team will destroy both the Bushies and the Romneyites before long.

Sheya,  March 10, 2010 5:59 PM

Oh I now noticed CBS actually DOES quote Palingates: The Alaska blog Palingate, which first noted the association with Citgo, points to conservative blogs calling for boycotts of Citgo, including a post from prominent conservative pundit Michelle Malkin who writes about the boycott movement as a way to "protest sulfur-sniffing Hugo Chavez."

Sheya,  March 10, 2010 6:01 PM

If they pass the horrible Obamacare crap....I hope they give unlimited mental health benefits.....the crazy leftists are in dire need and the rest of us will need services as they drive us crazy and the deep clinical depression sets in......of course when it fails and Sarah is elected President for the next eight years the cost of healthcare will finally go down.....the looney leftists will still need intensive mental healthcare but there will be so many less to treat.....most will simply explode and the rest are likely to immigrate to some socialist country.......it's a diabolical right wing conspiracy but it could work.

wisetrog,  March 10, 2010 6:14 PM

She didn't face this kind of backlash over her palmtop, I mean, when even left wingers have acknowledged that it's nothing why is the Right freaking out? The tone in AP's post about this, all these hit pieces popping up on the right, I wish we knew how these people are communicating and how all of these disparate people are coordinating their message.

GAHanson,  March 10, 2010 6:16 PM

Maybe some day, someone inside the anti-Palin coalition will spill the beans, but that won't be for a long time to come.

Might I ask?,  March 10, 2010 6:16 PM

My apolgies for my friend, PG who has been posting here under this handle.  I am the one who set up the blogger account for her as I am her caretaker.  I set up the accoun based on a website she liked very much about praying for Trig. We had hoped that by letting her blog on the computer here at the library that she would make some new friends.  But now she is quite upset at being called a liar and is not going to come back.  I told her I would apologize.  I am sorry.

manajordan,  March 10, 2010 6:20 PM

Thanks Rich, this was a great take on all this ridiculousness.

The media response to Sarah is so very telling. And the fact that they act in the same irrational way over and over again is even more telling. Either they fear her, which most of them vehemently deny. Or they just enjoy taking gratitous pot shots at someone over and over again, and that someone's family over and over again. That behavior is bullying and could even be classified as abusive. Either way seems to come to the same end, they view her as threatening and react with a fight or flight response.

Sarah Palin has proven to be solid and immoveable regardless of all these attacks. Its indicative of her character and also of what truths she holds dear.

Thanks Rich and all of the C4P contributors and commenters for continuing to live up to the motto "We've got your back Guv!"

Nancy,  March 10, 2010 6:21 PM

Too bad Mr. Heath didn't take a photo of the bruise on his shin where little Sarah kicked him, in protest of going to Canada to get care for her brother. Yeah, too, too bad.

Nancy,  March 10, 2010 6:24 PM

This investigative reporting by the lamestream media, reminds of their intellectual curiosity during the election! They were all over the story of Obama palling around with terrorists!

Scott Davis operates the Iron Dog team and arranges all the sponsorships. His arrangements with many of them, including Arctic Cat and Mystik/Citgo, were made before Todd Palin became his partner and will continue if Todd Palin moves on.

Nancy,  March 10, 2010 6:29 PM

If it weren't for the Palins a whole group of Iron Doggere would still be eligible to run for President!

Allie,  March 10, 2010 6:39 PM

I was speaking to someone today and mentioning that this is beyond the pale and that person came up with a good point.  They are saying all of these negative things, because even though they have been proven wrong or silly, the negativity will still stay in people's mind and even though proved to be false their subconcious would still prevail.

I, personally do not buy Citgo gas even when it was cheaper than other places but once I was low on gas and was afraid that I would be stranded so I stopped at Citgo and got about $10 worth.  Regardless, how many people knew before this information came out that Mystic was a Venezuelan company?  It is not like she had been a member of the Board of Directors of the company for 20 years and never heard that it was a subsidiary of Citgo.  Anyway it was the sole lubricant sponsor of the whole Iron Dog, not just Todd Palin.  If anyone should be blamed here it should be the organizers for not making a full disclosure.

AKReport,  March 10, 2010 6:41 PM

this is what happens when you let the media fill the vacuum. Sarah has been silent since leno. why has she not done any facebook posts?

the media is hungery and she's not giving them any food.

She needs to fill the vacuum.

CharterOakie,  March 10, 2010 6:53 PM

Rich, good article, but regarding these points:

Isn’t it abundantly clear to the Palin Deranged that 40 years ago the 5 year old Sarah Heath failed utterly and abysmally to convince her father that he should not <span>take her brother</span> with the scalded foot to a hospital in a foreign territory, just in case years later that territory might join a nationalised health care system?

[...]

In fact, for all we know the five year old Sarah Heath didn’t even try to dissuade her father.

Pssst....Rich, you need to check the comments on this thread: http://www.conservatives4palin.com/2010/03/democrat-party-hack-hari-sevugan.html for a discussion on the point.

According to Nancy, Little Sarah actually did at least question her father on the wisdom of going to Canada to have Chuck Jr. treated.  Admittedly, Nancy wasn't entirely accurate about the mode of transportation used by the Heaths to go from Skagway to Whitehorse.  But otherwise the record seems clear that Little Sarah expressed her concern about her father's decision and the trouble it might cause for her decades later.

I for one don't entirely blame the PDS'ers for their point of view because allegedly Little Sarah's dad responded to her concern with a fairly compelling reason why they were crossing the border into the Yukon Territory to seek healthcare for her brother, and for that matter, why Chuck Jr. burned his ankle in the first place.  Yes, it's almost unbelievable, but apparently it was all a prescient (dare I say devious) plan on Daddy Heath's part to set a good old fashioned northern bear trap for Little Sarah's future antagonists.

I suppose one could fault Little Sarah for not overruling her father in this instance, but she was only about 5 years old, after all.

Of course honesty compels me to mention that I, and perhaps Nancy too, read this account in a coloring book in the break room at Barbarian Central entitled "The Adventures of Little Sarah Palin."  It's possible that the book is not completely accurate in all respects.

(Yes, I know.  If it weren't for the fact that my sole motivation was to see that Nancy gets credit for breaking that part of the story, this post would be...shameless.)

Palingates is not an Alaskan blog, however, they help perpetuate the myth.

The thinking of the leftists is asinine. I could use the same line of reasoning to say that because I pay taxes, and our tax money is used to fund (insert wasteful government program), therefore, I support government waste. That's just bad logic. I can't tolerate that. I'm tired of the stupidity. I'm tired of CBS knowingly supporting a Trig Truther blog. They do so willingly and repeatedly.

Breaking news: 5 year old Sarah Heath was a pyromaniac, and Mr. Heath was staying one step ahead of the American authorities, by slipping across the border in the dead of night, with their son and his foot that little Sarah Heath charred beyond recognition!
Subsequently, Chuck Jr. has a wooden foot made from the trees a rainforest in Venezuela!

The Heath family has holed up in their home, while helicopters descend and tv trucks set up outside their residence.

Hey folks ... wow ... I leave for a week, and I feel like I'm years behind. Ha! Well, my book is done. By the grace of God only. My poor kids and hubby have been living in squalor and neglect while mommy pounds away on her computer 20 hrs a day barely looking up to notice there's a world outside my screen.

Anyway, another day, another Sarah smear from the "know-it-alls" ... Well, it's time we fight back with all we got. I got a whole arsenal of know-it-all books planned. Health Know-it-Alls, Race Know-it-Alls, Hollywood Know-it-alls, and Academic Know-it-Alls.

The Know-It-Alls who distort the truth to protect their special interests at the expense of everyone else are going down, my friends. And it may take us a decade, or two decades, but we're gonna kick their asses. Mark my words. :-)

I'm almost feel sorry for conspiracy theorists. Almost.

It's a shame that people have absolutely NO lives that they give a damn about something that happened 40 years ago

Jesse Cornish,  March 10, 2010 9:33 PM

Nonsense. Sockgate will take the world by storm.

Meh.

Taxman,  March 10, 2010 10:00 PM

I'm thinking another Sarah Palin facebook post on healthcare is imminent.  Obama had yet another Obamascare pep rally in MO today and Pelosi said the other day healthcare should be passed so we know what's in it!  And there there is this whole Heath family Canada healthcare farce from the '60's.

Nancy,  March 10, 2010 10:03 PM

More breaking news: Earlier we reported that little, 5 year old Sarah Heath set fire to her brother's foot/ankle, we are now learning that she actually shot her brother in the foot, just missing the wolf she was aiming at, from the helicopter she was piloting. She burned his foot, hoping to cover up the bullet wound.

Wow! Nice to hear, didn't know what you were doing but missed you... Can't wait to read it and so happy for you and what you are doing for Sarah. Sounds like you are finally getting to do what you told me on the phone after college of the Ozarks, believe Gina and I were in the airport in Tulsa at the time... And that was eventually use your journalism to help Sarah and work on her campaign.
Bless you and hopeful all is well with you and family.

Patrick, could you please do me a favor.  If you 'see' C4P reader "A" please tell her that the company that reported the  Obama's Proposed Budget 2010, with tons of eliminations on deductions related to O&G (aiming at killing our O&G industry), in the  Risk factor, please tell "A" (him or her I don't know) that the name of the company is Goodrich Petroleum Inc. Someone posted this on Free Republic, regarding Mitt's book being #1 on the NYT. Notice it hasn't cracked the top 10 on either B&N or Amazon. Regardless, it appears that at least 10,000 were purchased for a fundraiser in Utah:

"Looks like Romney , or at least his PAC has purchased 10,000 copies.
http://mittromneycentral.com/2009/12/13/romney-book-event-expects-10000-attendees/
“The Hinckley Institute of Politics (University of Utah) is hosting a book signing and lecture to discuss Mitt Romney’s new book No Apology: The Case for America’s Greatness, which is set to be released on March 2, 2010.”
“The event will take place at the Salt Palace on March 13 (the day after Romney’s birthday). The event [hopes to have] 10,000 attendees,ALL OF WHOM WILL RECEIVE A SIGNED COPY OF THE NEW BOOK. Tickets will go on sale on Thursday (Dec.17) at 10:00 AM, evidently through a new website to be launched at that time: MittRomneyUtah.com. Pricing is not yet known. We will update when we know more.'"

PatrickinOH,  March 10, 2010 10:11 PM

Sure thing Canary.  BTW that one thing you sent me by email, it would do you much metter to send it to SarahPAC.  I sent them a thank you to Sarah for coming to Columbus and I asked them to forward it to Sarah, within 6 hours I got a response that they had done so.

From the Politico article:

Mitt Romney's new book, "No Apology: The Case for American Greatness," will debut on top of the New York Times bestseller list due out March 21, a source tells me.

An anonymous source who can look into the future and know what book will be #1 in two weeks?  Ummm.....okay.

Also, which best seller list?  All books?  All Non-fiction?  Political non-fiction?

CruelaDev,  March 10, 2010 10:12 PM

I was so impressed with Mr. Heath...and the last caller!
That was AWESOME...how all he had to hear was the last name of the
caller and he proceeds to remember not only the caller...but his sister and the
trip to Mt. McKinely!

BTW....Trivia question...

Before Mt. McKinely was discovered...what was the highest mountain in North America?
Uffda...you can't play!

Canary,  March 10, 2010 10:13 PM

Oh thanks I will do.

Whitney the Pipsqueak,  March 10, 2010 10:14 PM

There will be no outrage about this like for Sarah buying some books for donors to her PAC. If Mitt's book every does make the NYT bestsellers list, it will have an asterisk (or some marking) that denotes bulk sales. Sarah's book never has had those.

The hypocrisy is thick.

So you knew too huh?

Canary,  March 10, 2010 10:19 PM

lonestar,

it's really sad and mind bogling to see this.  Let's me ask you born and raised Americans here. BHO is a president of a republic, not a king of a country in medieval time. How come he get do whatever he wants like this????? I don't understand.  We have 100 senators and 435 congressmen (and women). this is the best we can do? I think it can be even comparable to communist country.

[In communist vietnam, the politburo decides to let the chinese come in the country free, no visa and exploit bauxite (which is very dangerous for the country because the location is a strategic place in VN). People were angry and protested but they were put in jail and the govt moved forward.]

THIS IS FREAKING AMERICA and he just turns the switch, just like that???  I think Gov Palin should have some FB soon. This is horrible news
What is the EXPLANATION FOR SUCH A RULE??

Whitney the Pipsqueak,  March 10, 2010 10:35 PM

By the way, it looks as if I missed some good discussion while my internet at work was down this afternoon. I think this is great discussion, and it helps us to understand where others are coming from and what we really think individually as well. It will help us as we discuss the future and direction of our country in general, in addition to who we think should be president. It's awesome if we carry on such passion and debate with each other, and I hope it extends beyond that to discussions with friends, family, and others whether it be face-to-face, blogging or other means.

We want our country headed back in the right direction, and I think most of us think that includes Sarah Palin becoming President. However, when Sarah resigned, she said, " I never thought that I, nor anyone else, need a title to do this--to make a difference, to help people". That was the part of the speech that spoke to me the most. Very few of us hold a title of political significance, but Sarah was speaking to and about us, just as much as she was speaking about herself. This has challenged me to get involved more in things, and even to just engage more in discussions about our country on a cultural and political level. I think that it has probably done the same for others as well. I truly hope Sarah runs for President in 2012, but if she doesn't, I hope that each of us will maintain the same fervor for getting our country back to the Constitution and conservatism. I think Bill said this afternoon that it isn't about Sarah, it's about the country. I think he's right, but I also think that Sarah figures into the "about the country" equation. Like Lipstick, I too have questioned some of Sarah's decisions, but they are her decisions not mine. She is certainly going to do things her own way, whether or not she has Presidential hopes. I still wholeheartedly believe she is the one person who will mean every word of the Presidential oath of office when she takes it! I'm going to assume that she is running until she says or indicates to the contrary, and regardless, I'm going to try to take her words to heart to personally do all that I can to make a difference.

Just my two (or three) cents.

section9,  March 10, 2010 10:51 PM

AS TO PALINGATES:

Look kids, this is pretty basic stuff: it's set up overseas so Palin or any one of us can't sue them. I will bet you dimes, dollars, to doughnuts that its' a Soros outfit. The fact that the servers are overseas keep them squeaky clean, as well. No one can trace their ultimate backer. It's very important to the Left to keep deniability intact.

Remember, at bottom, progressivism is a culture of liars and lying. It's what they do, and it's who they are. One of the reasons that the Obami are starting to come apart at the seams is that his entire program is built on Nationalization. He didn't tell the American people that. It was important that that truth be hidden, as Churchill might say, by a bodyguard of lies. But the people woke up. So now, all the Left has left to them are a blizzard of lies. Palingates is only a small, tiny part of that blizzard.

What Palin understands, that the Republican Party doesn't seem to get, is that CBS News is also part of that blizzard of lies. She gets this in her bones, and nothing these clowns do will ever surprise her. That is why she is way ahead of the rest of the Republican Party: she understands the enemy's use of Propaganda and knows how to use it against the Enemy.

Black Propaganda is only designed to distract and demoralize the Enemy. Remember that is how Progressives think of us. They will lie, cheat, and steal to gain and hold power. After all, Saul Alinsky taught them how to do it. What Alinsky never understood was that someone would come along who could internalize Rules for Radicals <span>so effectively.</span>

This is so ridiculous.  Nobody is thinking that a 5 yo would have made a decision about medical care.  The biggest fuss was about her conflict in stories.  This is not the problem at hand.  The major concern is about the fraud that was involved in the takeover of the Matsunu Creamery and the subsequent cash flow that resulted.  You seem to be deliberately diverting attention to a tiny bit of news when the big news is on the Dairy takeover.

section9,  March 11, 2010 12:37 AM

Smart boy.

Now you get it. Have you ever wondered why Palin herself hasn't responded to the Silver Spoon thing, or the Leno kerfuffle, or this horseshit being generated by the Palingates astroturf site?

Palin knows that the White House is trying to get her tied down in every little small conflict. They used the same tactic in Alaska with Kellen Biegel, Shannyn Moore, the Falafel Lady, and the ethics charges. Remember, progressives are not interested in upholding the law, just in using the law as a weapon against their opponents.

All authoritarian movements are like this.

Sarah has enough defenders on line now to make short work of each meme that the Left uses against her. She can talk about the ISSUES, which is all she should be talking about, and which is what the people want to hear from her. She is too smart to tie herself down to the small things: that's what they did to her in Alaska. You do not have to teach Sarah the same lesson twice! But electing Palin alone will not be enough.

Over the next ten years, it will be important to establish the link between progressivism and European authoritarian tendencies such as fascism and socialism. Beck and Goldberg have laid the intellectual groundwork for the Grand Assault. Obama is doing much of our work for him, given his own authoritarian impulses. To roll back progressivism and restore Constitutional Government in this country will not simply be the work of electing someone like Palin: it will be the work of decades.
