Sarah Palin: Institutionalizing Crony Capitalism

A new FaceBook note from Gov. Palin.

In the wake of the recent financial meltdown, Americans know that we need reform. Not only have many individuals learned lessons about personal responsibility through this, but we’ve been able to engage in a discussion about government’s appropriate role.

The current debate over financial reform demonstrates what happens when political leaders react to a crisis with a raft of new regulations. First off, the people involved in writing government regulations are often lobbyists from the very industry that the new laws are supposed to regulate, and that’s been the case here. It should surprise no one that financial lobbyists are flocking to DC this week. Of course, the big players who can afford lobbyists work the regulations in their favor, while their smaller competitors are left out in the cold. The result here are regulations that institutionalize the “too big to fail” mentality.

Moreover, the financial reform bill gives regulators the power to pick winners and losers, institutionalizing their ability to decide “which firms to rescue or close, and which creditors to reward and how.” Does anyone doubt that firms with the most lobbyists and the biggest campaign donations will be the ones who get seats in the lifeboat? The president is trying to convince us that he’s taking on the Wall Street “fat cats,” but firms like Goldman Sachs are happy with federal regulation because, as one of their lobbyists recently stated, “We partner with regulators.”

They seem to have a nice relationship with the White House too. Goldman showered nearly a million dollars in campaign contributions on candidate Obama. In fact, J.P. Freire notes that President Obama received about seven times more money from Goldman than President Bush received from Enron. Of course, it’s not just the donations; it’s the revolving door. You’ll find the name Goldman Sachs on many an Obama administration résumé, including Rahm Emanuel’s and Tim Geithner’s chief of staff’s.

We need to be on our guard against such crony capitalism. We fought against distortion of the market in Alaska when we confronted “Big Oil,” or more specifically some of the players in the industry and in political office, who were taking the 49th state for a ride. My administration challenged lax rules that seemed to allow corruption, and we even challenged the largest corporation in the world at the time for not abiding by provisions in contracts it held with the state. When it came time to craft a plan for a natural gas pipeline, we insisted on transparency and a level playing field to insure fair competition. Our reforms helped reduce politicians’ ability to play favorites and helped clean up corruption. We set up stricter oversight offices and ushered through a bi-partisan ethics reform bill. Far from being against necessary reform, I embrace it.

Commonsense conservatives acknowledge the need for financial reform and believe that government can play an appropriate role in leveling the playing field and protecting “the dynamism of American capitalism without neglecting the government’s responsibility to protect the American public.” We’re listening closely to the reform discussion in Washington, and we know that government should not burden the market with unnecessary bureaucracy and distorted incentives, nor make a dangerous “too-big-to-fail” mentality the law of the land.

you are good, you don't have inside connections with the Sarah camp do you. :)
She is absolutely brilliant.

Cuda Corruption Fighter put on her cape tonight!

It's always particularly ensuring to see her mention her record. :)

defendAmerica, April 22, 2010 10:44 PM

I love when she talks up her record.

This one is like a personal message to the Prez... "I've dealt with your kind before... and they went down hard... in fact, some of them went to prison..."

defendAmerica, April 22, 2010 10:46 PM

Geez Whit... you keep saying everything I am... though apparently you are typing it a few nanoseconds faster than I am! ;)

palinsupporter, April 22, 2010 10:46 PM

I thought that bringing up her record was good also. She has to convince the American people how much she did for Alaska in her prematurely ending term if she wants to win in 2012 and fight the persona that she is an empty skirt.

PatrickinOH, April 22, 2010 10:46 PM

Great post. I love how she compares and contrasts her tenure as Governor of Alaska, which was open and transparent, versus the closed and corrupt Obama administration.

Whitney the Pipsqueak, April 22, 2010 10:47 PM

It's because I'm younger. ;)

But hey, great minds think alike.

Angela, April 22, 2010 10:49 PM

Sarah needs to wait her turn. She's a good cheerleader, but obviously not what we need right now. I hope she doesn't run.

Brilliant post by Sarah. I love it when she brings up her own record in these situations. More people need to find out how she handled the oil companies as Governor. These are things you never, ever, hear about from Katie Couric or any of her LSM friends.

She doesn't think much of him.

Keep the pressure on Sarah. Biden says Sarah is not running, however, has he been right yet since becoming Vice President.

They are asking us to call our senators because the bill would disproportionately impact USAA because they are a unique, fully integrated association.

If unchanged, the bill would
- Prevent USAA from managing their portfolio as has been done for the past 87 years.
- Jeopardize their ability to offer competitive products.
- Limit their ability to return money, like I can a ~$100 each December. Last year, USAA returned $1.2 billion to members in the form of distributions, dividends, and bank rebates and rewards.

That’s one thing about Sarah that is unique, because of her unorthodox rise in politics she has not surrounded or had to rely on special interest groups and Big business to get her where she needed to go......She can speak with authority and with no guilt

This is a winning issue from now through 2012, Obama/Goldman Sachs ties makes it clearly a "Good ole boy" corrupt Administration...People don't like cheaters and backroom deal-making especially when they are out of a job or are going through difficult times!.....FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS!!! RUN ON THIS SARAH!...............along with everything else, RUN!!

STAND UP FOR OUR NATION!

PatrickinOH, April 23, 2010 2:41 AM

I was doing some homework today and I had the TV on. I flipped to CNN during Rick Sanchez's show. Fortunately he was out for the day and Drew Griffin was substituting. They did a quick report on the Sarah Palin email hacking trial and talked about Bristol testifying. They showed the video of Kernell making his smarta$ comment about Bristol. Drew Griffin said "I'm keeping my lips zipped on this one." Then he called him a punk! It was awesome. Seriously though, Drew Griffin has done two interviews with Sarah Palin, one about two weeks before the 2008 election, and one after she announced she was resigning. I thought he was pretty fair to her. Except for when he mistakenly said that Byron York who was over at National Review had called her stupid. What he actually said was that if you listened to what the MSM had to say about Palin, you would think she is really stupid. To be fair he did apologize to York for the mistake, but never to Sarah. Still, Griffin calling Kernell a punk would indicate that based on his past experiences with Palin, he likes her on a personal level.

Palin: 'I am not a quitter; I am a fighter'

http://tinyurl.com/y3p3baa

Kentucky Colonel, April 23, 2010 7:29 AM

The reason I "felt" a FB nightstick coming on, is simple. Sarah, unlike the typical politician, doesn't speak to hear her own voice and she doesn't write to see her words in print. She does, however, speak when something needs to be said, and writes when something needs to be clarified so that the people can really understand what Obama/Reid/Pelosi are trying to do to "fundamentally transform" the country she, and we, love.

To me, it was obvious that the time was nigh for Sarah to call bullcrap on this terrible bill the Dims are trying to push through. Obama used the demonization of the health insurance companies to drive the passing of ObamaCare. The public didn't buy it once the details of ObamaCare became public, but that didn't matter. Obama's using the same gameplan with this so-called financial reform. He's demonized Wall Street, and he knows that the bill must be pushed quickly before the people see what's in the bill.

Sarah knows what Obama and his agents of change are doing. Her essay explains it very well. I still expect her to address the VAT, either in an appropriate speaking venue, on FB, or in an Op-Ed.

Kentucky Colonel, April 23, 2010 7:32 AM

I like that, a lot. Snow White vs. The Seven Dwarfs; now that speaks volumes and uses very few words.

Wow, what a great Facebook post! I haven't read everyone's comments here, but I know that people are gratified, as am I, that she mentioned her record as governor.

She's the one we've been looking for (in the context of our nation's politics). No doubt in my mind.

Western, April 23, 2010 10:49 AM

In my opinion, this note/message from Sarah is one of her most concise political statements uttered.

It appeals to Independent voters by emphasizing her examples of effective governance. For too long, the GOP Establishment and Republicans have been beholden to the influence of Greed/Big Money within political circles.

Sarah offers voters a populist yet patriotic view of the role of government.

Puma.for.Life, April 23, 2010 11:06 AM

james23, April 23, 2010 11:36 AM

This is a very strong FB post by Sarah. Suggest we all circulate it, to D's and Indies we know as well as Rs. This message cuts across party lines like a knife. NO ONE outside DC and Wall St. board rooms supports crony capitalism, and people in both parties know it is a huge problem at the root of our economic mess. this is what John McCain's message would have been and should have been, had it not been for a serious deficiency of gray matter in the old guy's cranium. NO such deficiency of Mme Pres.
