Why is the Tea Party Nation Lying About Rick Santorum Quitting the Race in Florida?

This evening my non-political husband asked me if Rick Santorum is quitting the presidential race. I said, “No, I’ve seen nothing like that.” Apparently, he heard some report on NPR or Yahoo! (his main sources of news) that Santorum is leaving Florida or something before the vote next week. I saw a similar leftie smear job on MSN later tonight.

Then I saw this being discussed over on the Palinistas for Santorum Facebook page. Apparently, members of the Tea Party Nation emailed out an Open Letter to Rick Santorum Supporters in Florida, encouraging them to abandon Rick – in part, because he was abandoning Florida:

Rick Santorum supporters have a difficult but important choice to make in the next few days as the Florida primary comes up on Tuesday.

Rick Santorum has left Florida. He knows he cannot win Florida. Florida is the first of the Winner take all states. In other words, Florida is crucial.

Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are running neck and neck in Florida. By all accounts this race is going to be very close.

The Santorum voters can make the difference.

[…]

If you vote for Rick Santorum in the Florida primary, you are splitting the vote with Newt. Splitting the vote with Newt will guarantee a Romney win.

That we all agree must not happen.

If you support Rick Santorum, use your vote to help stop Mitt Romney in Florida. Whether you agree or disagree with Newt Gingrich, he is close enough to stop Romney with your help.

If you are a Floridian who supports Rick Santorum, I strongly urge you to vote for Newt Gingrich in the Florida Primary. If you know someone who lives in Florida, please urge them to vote for Newt Gingrich.

Let’s stop Romney and keep a liberal from becoming the Republican nominee.

This is bad stuff, people. I don’t mind people trying to persuade folks to vote for whatever candidate they prefer. But lying about the other candidate quitting the race? The truth is Rick Santorum is NOT leaving Florida. He stated after the debate Thursday that he will be campaigning through the weekend, and he will leave Monday night because there’s very little campaigning to do at that point. He’s campaigning to win. And some polls show him surging. A new Florida poll shows he has the highest positive rating among Tea Party supporters. He has won support from Palin supporters like Dr. Gina Loudon and Elizabeth Hawkes, along with bloggers like Gary Jackson, of a Time for Choosing blog.

Very few gave Santorum a chance in Iowa, but he won anyway, and has defeated Gingrich in two out of the three elections in which they’ve competed. And it is the height of arrogance for people to ask him or his supporters to step aside when he has as many primary victories as both Romney and Gingrich. One each.

Here is Rick Santorum on Hannity setting the record straight about his “quitting the race.”:

I would just like to add a few more thoughts on this … The more I learn about Rick Santorum, the more I see him as the principled leader we need to not only take on Obama, but to win. I admire his family life, his faith, and his consistency on the issues. He has taken on big thorny Federal issues (balanced budget, welfare reform, Iran) and let’s not forget that like Governor Palin, he has accomplished a lot quickly. He first was elected to Congress in his early 30s, and became a senator at age 36. And now, at age 53, he is the YOUNGEST of the remaining GOP candidates. We need a young reformer to go up against Obama. This election is about the future.

Here is a great video of Rick giving a big talk in Florida about the economic value of strong families and his Made in America plan for working Americans (part two of 10 clips from the speech. It’s AWESOME.):
