A presidential committee for John McCain and Sarah Palin donated almost $9 million to charity from its 2008 campaign funds, records released Tuesday show.
The McCain-Palin Compliance Fund gave the money to the McCain Institute Foundation in two contributions — one at the end of February and the next in early March with the payments listed as a “charitable donation,” according to Federal Election Commission fillings.
The McCain Institute will be based out of Arizona, but lists a trustees postal address in Florida on the FEC filings. The donation was first reported by The Washington Times.
The McCain Institute Foundation is “an Arizona charitable trust that will benefit the Arizona State University Foundation,” McCain spokesman Brian Rogers told The Hill. The funds will be put towards “build[ing] a nonprofit education and research center focused on world affairs” with the Arizona State University, he said.
