Via Fox News:
House Democrats on Wednesday appointed five members to a GOP-led special Benghazi investigation committee, ending weeks of speculation about whether they would boycott the panel.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi appointed Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight & Government Reform; Washington Rep. Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee; California Rep. Adam Schiff, a member of the House Committee on Appropriations; California Rep. Linda Sanchez, a member of the Committee on Ways and Means; and Illinois Rep. Tammy Duckworth, a member of the House Armed Services Committee.
Cummings will be the top Democrat on the committee.
The so-called select committee will investigate the Sept. 11, 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.
When I first saw this break on Fox a few minutes ago, I was completely befuddled as to why the Democrats would engage in such a dramatic about face and decide to participate in what they have hitherto lampooned repeatedly as a GOP “witch hunt” conducted by a “kangaroo court”, or something. ABC’s Jeff Zeleny provides the answer:
Is it better for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton if Democrats boycott or participate in the new House investigation of the Benghazi attacks?
That question is central to Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s decision whether to appoint Democratic members to the House select committee.
Several Democrats have urged Pelosi not to participate in the committee, saying it is unwise to lend an air of legitimacy to an investigation they have derided as a political witch hunt. But others, particularly those close to Clinton, believe that having Democrats on the panel is the only way to ensure both sides of the story will be told…
The Benghazi hearings are likely to become televised spectacles, so the thinking in Clinton world is that it’s better to have Democrats join in the questioning in hopes of balancing the proceedings, ABC News has learned.
The entire Democrat strategy on Benghazi is based on what they think is best for Bill Clinton’s wife. That’s what passes as statesmanship in today’s Democrat Party. There’s no interest whatsoever in getting to the bottom of what happened in Benghazi on that fateful night: Where was Obama? Where was Mrs. Clinton? Who gave the stand down order to the would-be rescue team? No, that stuff’s all irrelevant. The only matter of importance is that what Clinton’s wife wants, Clinton’s wife gets, and what she wants is five tax-payer financed defense counsels on that committee. Make no mistake, the sole function of Elijah Cummings and company is to obstruct the panel’s investigation and obfuscate the findings. I’m sure that will provide plenty of comfort to the families of the four Americans who were murdered in Benghazi.
