The Editors, New York Daily News:
Obama’s veto vow is a naked act of provocation, because his stated rationale is so weak.
Rather than offer a policy-based reason for blocking the 1,100-mile-long project, which would carry 830,000 barrels of oil daily, the White House asserts that Congress would sidestep an endless State Department approval process, plus a pending Nebraska Supreme Court decision.
In effect, the President is arguing that the will of the American people as expressed by both houses of Congress must bow to the ruminations of bureaucrats and judicial opinion about the pipeline’s route. In one move, he’s giving the back of the hand to Capitol Hill and cheapening the Constitution’s power of the veto.
