Republican Matt Bevin and Democrat Jack Conway squared off in a final debate before tomorrow’s election. Both candidates are seeking to replace exiting two term Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear [D].
Jack Conway has been the sitting Attorney General since 2007 and ran for the U.S. Senate unsuccessfully against Rand Paul in 2010. Conway, like sitting Governor Beshear is prohibited from seeking a third term by Kentucky’s Constitution.
Matt Bevin is a successful businessman. He lost a Senate primary challenge to five-term incumbent Mitch McConnell in 2014.
The latest polling shows an extremely tight contest, with both major party candidates drawing 44%. Independent candidate Drew Curtis stands at 6%. Bevin and Conway each insist internal polling shows them with the advantage and both are predicting victory.
The final debate was hosted last Monday by PBS affiliate KET, moderated by Bill Goodman.
