‘America lying on her back’ and other awkward moments with Ted Cruz
by Christine Ayala | April 21, 2016
Sen. Ted Cruz was widely mocked for a weird line about America “lying down with her back on the mat” in his New York primary concession speech Tuesday.
Add it to his blooper reel of awkward moments on the campaign trail – along with debate flubs, bad jokes and an infamous lip booger – late night comics and Twitter trolls have pounced on.
Cruz used the odd imagery to encourage supporters to bounce back from economic blows. It read as an effort to pivot to more of a general-election message – odd, because that night, Cruz suffered a crushing loss in the Empire State. Donald Trump trounced Cruz in New York, picking up nearly all 95 of the state’s delegates. Three went to Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
“I know you. You may have been knocked down, but America’s always been best when she is lying down with her back on the mat and the crowd has given the final count,” Cruz said. “It is time for us as a nation to get up, to shake it off and be who we were destined to be. Don’t let anyone try to convince you otherwise.”
