Greta Van Susteren joins MSNBC

The news host lands her third cable news network, after prior stints at CNN and Fox News

After a four month hiatus following her abrupt departure from Fox News last September, news host Greta Van Susteren announced today that she will be joining cable news channel MSNBC.

Van Susteren will host an as yet untitled Monday to Friday news program in the 6pm eastern / 3pm pacific time slot.

She began her broadcast career in 1994 as a legal analyst for CNN during the O.J. Simpson trial. Her popularity with viewers led to hosting duties at the network on ‘Burden of Proof’ and ‘The Point’.

Fox News landed Van Susteren after her CNN contract expired. She hosted ‘On The Record’ from February of 2002 until her sudden resignation last September. A clause in her contract was triggered when Fox News CEO Roger Ailes resigned, allowing Van Susteren to void her contract without penalty.

Van Susteren made the official announcement earlier today on Facebook:

Get ready! You are about to join me on an adventure! I want you to join me…because you and I have been friends for a long time, whether here on Facebook, on GretaWire…or CNN or Fox News Channel. You and I have been friends for a long time and so I want to tell you the news and I want you part of it.

Yes, I have decided. Just a short time ago, I finally tied up a bunch of ‘loose ends’ so that I could make that decision about my future.

MS/NBC is handing me the responsibility of anchoring the all important 6pm news hour and they are giving me the necessary resources to continue to do my best work for the viewers (that would be you) and that is exactly what I intend to do – my best work for you. After almost 25 years in cable news, you all know me very well – I am not changing but the dial where you find me on your remote is now changing to MS/NBC…and, of course, you will probably see my renewed energy and enthusiasm.

I am excited to work with friends who I have known for years at MS/NBC (and even worked with some years ago at both CNN and Fox as we all move around in this business) and I am also anxious to meet new friends and colleagues. The ink is barely dry on my contract and I have heard from many at MSNBC. (I have also made courtesy calls to my CNN competition Wolf Blitzer and FNC Bret Baier. Note, they are not just my competitors…they are first my friends, old friends, and my good friends.)

Cable news is about getting you information (news) and also provoking robust debate about important issues. That is what I have done for years and I am about to ‘get back up on the horse’ and keep doing it for you. MSNBC has a strong history of news and robust debate – and I am delighted to get back in the news business.

While I have loved my 4 month vacation – I did many items on my bucket list – it is time to get back to work. I am thrilled to be joining MS/NBC. I love new adventures…who doesn’t, right? New adventures revitalize one.

This is an exciting adventure for me. I hope you will join it with me.

See you at 6pm eastern (or set your DVR.)
