Acting unilaterally, Barack Obama reverses a U.S. policy that has been in place for decades.
This cowardly president wouldn’t have dared to revoke this long-standing policy prior to the 2016 presidential election. Only with no electoral prospects remaining, does Obama reveal his true intent.
With its heavy anti-Castro Cuban population, such a drastic policy change pre-election would have definitively swung Florida’s electoral votes toward the Republican nominee. As it turned out, Donald Trump carried Florida anyway.
Nor is it an accident that Barack Obama has targeted the one segment of Hispanics that leans conservative. For eight years he has allowed free passage to illegals from Mexico and Central America into the United States. Only Cubans seeking refuge in the United States earn his wrath.
The policy change does perhaps create a slight dilemma for the incoming president. Trump has made legal immigration a bedrock principle of his campaign. How will he view refugees fleeing the totalitarian state of Cuba? Will he restore the special status long conferred upon Cuban refugees? There is evidence to suggest he might, and he will have bi-partisan support from Congress to do so, though many suggest that Trump can unilaterally restore the policy, just as Obama reversed it.
Trump was extremely critical of the Obama administrations efforts to normalize relations with Cuba during the general election. There was no softening of that position post-election.
